Host Anthony Desiato presents a special Superboy double-header! First, Anthony and guest Ralph Puma dig into Karl Kesel & Tom Grummett's Kirby-infused return to the SUPERBOY title (#50-79), which features the arcs "The Last Boy on Earth," "Hyper-Tension," and the climactic "The Evil Factory," featuring the death of Tana Moon. Argh, DC... This week, V and Emily take another frustrating look at how DC Comics just loves to kill off Robins, this time with added explicit misogyny toward the fanbase as well as the character they've doomed to the gallows. On the bright side, V got an amazing primer from listener katieiscunning, who loves the character of Spoiler AKA Robin AKA Batgirl AKA Stephanie Brown, and made V and Emily love her, too! Plus, author Mary Borsellino began a comics accountability website known as Project Girl Wonder in reaction to Steph's awful death, and fans have been taking DC to task for their sexism ever since. Are you a DC girlie or a Marvel gal? Sources Death of a Robin Fanlore Stephanie Brown @ Fandom.com Listener katieiscunning -- thank you!! Jace chat with writer Dan DiDio at New York Comic Con about his Mad Cave series, Defenders of the Earth. Based on the hit cartoon that debuted in 1986, it follows some of the first characters to appear in comics and pulp magazines. What makes Defenders of the Earth special is that it brings in the next genreation as the children of Flash Gordon, Mandrake, The Phantom and Lothar join them in their adventures. Dan talks about exploring these characters and the challenge of writing such a large cast. The guys also discuss what artist Jim Calafiore is bringing to the series, Plus The Mets!

The post-Original Trilogy era takes root in Marvel's Star Wars comics this week with the launch of the 12-issue The Battle of Jakku maxi-series, a sprawling run that's poised to bridge the gap between the just concluded Star Wars and Darth Vader runs with whatever's due to come out in February, and does so in a dramatic, if not menacing fashion.Insurgency Rising #1 (of 4) sets up twain stories in the immediate aftermath of the second Death Star's destruction, bringing to comics key figures from the Aftermath trilogy of novels, the 2015 Star Wars Uprising mobile game and legacy characters like Leia and Luke, with readers poised to learn the events leading up to the fateful final fight over Jakku. It's been a longtime coming, this new story. 'Nuff Said! Nick Pappas-a teenage boy with nascent superpowers-has his world turned upside down when he's taken into witness protection after his superhero father is murdered on national television. But things are not what they appear to be in the small town he's relocated to. He soon discovers that, not only is it populated with family members of super villains, but it's also a prison and he's considered one of its most dangerous inmates. He can't be sure who to trust, and to make matters worse, he's developing powers of his own-with no way to control them.
Jace chats with Dan Didio about his recently released YA novel Hide or Seek. After steering the DC line for nearly two decades, we can confidently say that Dan knows superhero stories. During his time at DC Dan wrote a number of series including Phantom Stranger, OMAC and Sideways and now he is bringing that writing talent to the YA space with an engrossing novel about a young man who discovers his father is the world's most famous hero. Unfortunately, he finds out because his father has been killed and he is forced to go into hiding with his mother. From that set-up unfolds an action-packed and emotional story that will appeal to readers of all ages. You can find out more about Dan's debut novel below. The guys also touch on Dan's current role at Frank Miller Presents and Dan gives a quick rundown of the titles coming out from the legendary creator's publishing company. PRESS RELEASE: From the Publisher of Frank Miller Presents Comics and accomplished DC Comics writer, Dan DiDio, comes his first young adult science fiction and fantasy novel, Hide or Seek: The Superpower Protection Program. Nick Pappas is the unknowing son of the god-like hero Odysseus and when his father is murdered on national television, Nick's whole world is turned upside. He's taken into the witness protection program, relocated to a small town called Crucible, populated not only with families of of his father's greatest super-villains. What's worse instead of a safe haven, Nick discovers Crucible is a prison designed to contain and train the powers he's developing. Forced to remain in Crucible by the shadowy creatures called Mirror Men, who guard its border, Nick attempts to discover the extent of his powers and figure out who to trust amongst the eclectic band of kids he meets in town. Steeped in high stakes mystery, inventive superpowers, and friendship, Hide or Seek, captures the tone and excitement of great young adult series, like Percy Jackson and is perfect for dedicated comic fans and lovers of young adult science fiction and fantasy alike. For nearly twenty years, Dan DiDio has served DC Comics. He joined DC in January 2002 as Vice President of Editorial and quickly ascended into the role of Senior Vice President/Executive Editor of DC Comics. In that position, he directed the creative development and helped contemporize the superhero line of titles to bring increased relevancy and diversity. DiDio was also an accomplished writer at DC Comics, having created and redeveloped several comic series at DC, including Sideways, OMAC, Phantom Stranger, and, Metal Men. In 2010, DiDio was named Publisher of DC Entertainment alongside Jim Lee. As Publisher, he directed and oversaw DC Entertainment's entire publishing business. Currently, Dan is partnered with comic and media legend, Frank Miller, and together they started their own publishing line, Frank Miller Presents.
Dan talks about his new Novel Hide Or Seek, about a witness protection plan for superheroes and bad guys.Plus we discuss the Frank Miller presents line of comics, and more DC memories.
