The Intercept Briefing is sharing a recent live podcast recording The Intercept's Senior Politics Reporter Akela Lacy joined about the unlawful detention of Rümeysa Öztürk — a graduate student who was seized by federal immigration agents for co-authoring an op-ed in her school's newspaper. The live event, hosted by Question Everything with Brian Reed – which you can listen to on KCRW – and the Tufts Daily where Rümeysa published her op-ed, gathered journalists, editors, and attorneys, including Carol Rose, who is part of Rümeysa's legal team and executive director of the Massachusetts ACLU. They discussed the status of Rümeysa's case and the conditions she's enduring under ICE detention, and the chilling effects her case has had on speech, journalism, and academic freedom. Full episode description: Where better to huddle up and discuss what to do about Rümeysa Öztürk and the chilling effect that is happening in journalism than on campus at Tufts University with the student journalists at The Tufts Daily? This week Brian and Question Everything co-host a live event with the editor-in-chief and associate editor from The Tufts Daily – Arghya Thallapragada and Ellora Onion-De. Together they interview journalists and attorneys, including Carol Rose, part of Rümeysa's legal team and executive director of the Massachusetts ACLU, to learn what all happened to Rümeysa and why. What did her abduction by federal agents a month ago have to do with her immigration status as a Turkish graduate student studying child development, here on a student visa? Why did Secretary of State Marco Rubio say her Op-ed was cause for incarceration? Why is she still in ICE's custody? And what happened to the constitutional protections around free speech and a free press that we depend on in a free society? Joined by former editor-in-chief of both the Washington Post and the Boston Globe, Marty Baron; First Amendment lawyer Robert Bertsche; and senior politics reporter at The Intercept Akela Lacey; the group wrestles in real time with the gravity of this moment, not just for Rümeysa Öztürk, but for all of us.Read the Op-ed Rümeysa and others wrote that ran in The Tufts Daily a year ago in March.Watch the video of federal agents in plainclothes, forcing Rümeysa Öztürk into an SUV on March 25, 2025.Quick thing: In our discussion Carol Rose says the ACLU has filed 100 legal actions in President Trump's first 100 days. The specific count on those is actually higher: the ACLU filed 110 legal actions in the Trump administration's first 100 days.Sign up for our newsletter: www.kcrw.com/questioneverything“Question Everything” is a production of KCRW and Placement Theory. A few months ago I made a decision that changed my life and the trajectory of Tangle for good.I was approached by a producer for a new podcast called “Question Everything,” hosted by Brian Reed (who you might know from the hit podcast S-Town). The producer, Zach St. Louis, told me they were doing a series about the state and future of journalism. They wanted to do an episode about Tangle, which I agreed to enthusiastically, and then Zach came down to the Tangle office and interviewed me for a few hours. During our interview, I mentioned to Zach that we've heard from many readers who said Tangle has helped them with their relationships with people in their family or friend groups with whom they share political disagreements. I even hear from married couples, I said, who are on opposite sides of the political spectrum. Zach was intrigued by this and ended up tracking down a few of those Tangle readers, including one couple who ended up being at the heart of the episode. A few months after Question Everything published our show, it was picked up by This American Life on NPR, which nearly doubled our readership and helped me make a few big hires at Tangle. It all happened right around the election, and was an incredibly exciting and overwhelming time. Now that the dust has settled a bit, we've decided to republish the original Question Everything episode on our own podcast feed so you all can listen to it (in the event you haven't). And, when you're done, I highly recommend going to listen to all of the Question Everything series — which is a genuinely fascinating exploration of journalism.Isaac & the Tangle teamBy the way: If you are not yet a podcast member, and you want to upgrade your newsletter subscription plan to include a podcast membership (which gets you ad-free podcasts, Friday editions, The Sunday podcast, bonus content), you can do that here. “There's interesting data that's been coming out suggesting that podcasts and hosts are the most trusted figures in media.” Brian Reed, (Host of Question Everything, S-Town - This American Life) The Media Roundtable is back! This week we're bringing you a hard-hitting story featuring a unique, journalistic perspective on the landscape of audio and media. Dan Granger, (CEO & Founder, Oxford Road) sits down with journalist Brian Reed, (Host of S-Town, The Trojan Horse Affair, This American Life) about Brian's new hit podcast Question Everything, 7 years in the making. Back in 2017, Australian journalist, Gay Alcorn criticized S-Town as being "morally indefensible". After brushing off that criticism, Brian Reed did something extremely clever: he sat down for an in-depth chat with Alcorn in the Question Everything podcast pilot. Together, Dan and Brian discuss: the origins of S-Town and Question Everything, ethics and bias in storytelling, journalistic principles for advertisers, and more. Let's dive in.

In the latest Brand Story episode, host Sean Martin chats with Brian Reed, Mobile Security Evangelist, and Chris Roeckl, Chief Product Officer at AppDome, during the OWASP Global AppSec event in Lisbon. The episode dives into pivotal aspects of mobile app security and consumer expectations.Brian Reed articulates how AppDome collaborates with OWASP to tackle mobile app security challenges. He underscores the significant role consumers play in these endeavors. According to AppDome's annual survey, consumer feedback is indispensable, revealing that a staggering 97% of consumers would abandon a brand after an insecure app experience, while 95% would advocate for a brand offering a secure experience. This highlights the stark consequences of neglecting mobile security.Chris Roeckl elaborates on how AppDome's annual survey, spanning four years, has amassed data from over 120,000 consumers across 12 countries. This wealth of information provides a clear trend: consumers increasingly prioritize security, particularly in banking, e-wallet, healthcare, and retail apps. Interestingly, while social media is not at the forefront of security concerns, it is rapidly becoming a focus area as users grow more conscious of account security and privacy. The discussion brings to light how brands can effectively communicate their security protocols to consumers. Reed and Roeckl suggest transparency through dedicated web pages, direct email outreach, and in-app notifications. This communication helps build trust and reassures consumers that their security concerns are being addressed. The conversation also touches on the integration of security into the development lifecycle. Developers often face the challenge of ensuring robust security without compromising the user experience. Reed mentions the importance of making security processes seamless and non-invasive for developers. By leveraging machine learning and AI, AppDome aims to automate many security tasks, allowing developers to focus on creating innovative, user-friendly applications. Moreover, Roeckl points out that a holistic approach is essential. This means incorporating input from various teams within an organization - from product leaders focusing on user engagement to engineers ensuring crash-free applications and cybersecurity teams safeguarding data integrity. This collaborative effort ensures that the final product not only meets but exceeds consumer expectations. The insights shared in the episode are a call to action for businesses to prioritize mobile security. With six billion humans using mobile apps globally, the stakes are higher than ever. Brands must recognize the direct correlation between secure mobile experiences and customer loyalty. By investing in robust security measures and effectively communicating these efforts, businesses can foster a secure and trustworthy environment for their users.Listeners are encouraged to download the full AppDome report for a deeper understanding of consumer attitudes towards mobile app security. Special Thanks to our podcast sponsor, NowSecure. On this episode, Brian Reed (Chief Mobility Officer at NowSecure) stops in to provide a world class education on Mobile Application Security. It's incredible to think that 70% of internet traffic is coming over mobile devices. Most of this traffic occurs via mobile applications so we need to understand mobile application security testing, before attackers show us how important it is. This episode will help you understand: What should you be doing to secure your mobile applications? Why managing a mobile device doesn't secure your application layer? How should you vet your mobile applications according to recommendations from OWASP References: NowSecure Academy provides free mobile application security training and certificate programs- https://academy.nowsecure.com/ Mobile app growth trends and security issues in the news- https://www.nowsecure.com/mobile-app-breach-news/ Snapshot of the current risk profile for mobile apps in your industry- https://mobilerisktracker.nowsecure.com/ App Defense Alliance https://appdefensealliance.dev/ Google Play Data Safety- https://blog.google/products/google-play/data-safety/ OWASP CycloneDX- https://owasp.org/www-project-cyclonedx/ OWASP MASVS- https://github.com/OWASP/owasp-masvs
S-Town, a seven "chapter", 6-plus hour podcast was released on March 28, 2017. The podcast was downloaded a record-breaking 10 million times in four days, and had been downloaded over 40 million times just a few months later. This week Mike and Eric review S-Town, along with The Trojan Horse Affair, Brian Reed's follow-up to S-Town. Drawing on both comparisons and contrasts between the 2 series, we attempt to highlight the techniques and styles that makes Brian's podcasts so ground-breaking and a must-listen for anyone doing podcasts that involve storytelling. S-Town begins when a middle-aged man, living in an Alabama town he despises, emails Brian and asks him to investigate a murder that he believes has been covered up by the local police. In The Trojan Horse Affair, an unlikely duo chases down the origins of a mysterious letter that caused a national scandal in England. On No Harm In Asking, hosts Eric Byron and Michael Kerr are on a journey to gather insights into why podcasts succeed or fail and to explore the myriad of different patterns, structures, topics, techniques, and personalities that have evolved this industry. Through our podcast, we hope to inspire and encourage the next generation of storytellers and visionaries. All 7 chapters of S-Town can be found here: https://stownpodcast.org/ They also have a full social media presence on Twitter and Instagram at @stownpodcast (although updates seemed to have stopped after they were acquired by the New York Times). Dr. Brian Reed and Zach Rossmiller from the University of Montana join EAB's Pavani Reddy to discuss a new initiative their institution has launched to help Native American students succeed. The three discuss initial learnings from the project, dubbed “Data for Student Equity,” which is funded in part by a grant from the Gates Foundation. The project enables university leaders to access and analyze data creatively to identify institutional and financial obstacles preventing Native American students from earning their degrees. While there is still much work to be done, new approaches are being developed at the university that could be replicated by other institutions to positively impact enrollment, retention, and career success for all students.

MONSTER PARTY PRESENTS A LIBATION CELEBRATION! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, pay tribute to the unofficial fifth member of the team. It's time give a toast to the toast, with this conversation cocktail we simply call... BOOZE!!! Over the years, MONSTER PARTY has cherished and chastised our ole friend, DEMON BOOZE. But for this episode, we're putting its genre film and television appearances in the spotlight! What HAMMER HORROR film would be complete without a snifter of spirits in a Victorian study, or a pint of beer at Baron Frankenstein's favorite pub? What fun would STAR TREK be without the deleterious effects of Romulan Ale, or an impromptu drinking contest with Scotty? And what better way to make life's troubles melt away, than with a nice bottle of TENAFLY VIPER? These a just a few examples of alcohol's many fine movie and TV performances that will be discussed on this podcast. Which begs the question, "Where's the BOOZE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD?!!!" Inebri-aiding us with this episode is a very special guest, who is also a huge MONSTER PARTY fan! He's one of only twenty MASTER CICERONES (which is basically the beer equivalent of a MASTER SOMMELIER) in the world, and is the host of his own fangtastic horror podcast, HALLOWEEN IS FOREVER! Let's give a super sloshy, happy drunk welcome to... BRIAN REED! NOTE: When it comes to booze, as with our podcast, please use responsibly! And yes, we're already planning for BOOZE VOL.2!!!

Liz Recommends - Stuff the British Stole https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/stuff-the-british-stole/Throughout its reign, the British Empire stole a lot of stuff. Today those objects are housed in genteel institutions across the UK and the world. They usually come with polite plaques. This is a series about the not-so-polite history behind those objects. Each episode, award-winning journalist, author and genetic-potluck, Marc Fennell, picks one artefact and takes you on the wild, evocative, sometimes funny, often tragic adventure of how it got to where it is today. These objects will ultimately help us see the Commonwealth — and ourselves — today, in a different light.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/stuff-the-british-stole/id1540218461Nick Recommends - The Trojan Horse AffairA strange letter appears on a city councillor's desk in Birmingham, England, laying out an elaborate plot by Islamic extremists to infiltrate the city's schools. The plot has a code name: Operation Trojan Horse. The story soon explodes in the news and kicks off a national panic. By the time it all dies down, the government has launched multiple investigations, beefed up the country's counterterrorism policy, revamped schools and banned people from education for the rest of their lives. To Hamza Syed, who is watching the scandal unfold in his city, the whole thing seemed … off. Because through all the official inquiries and heated speeches in Parliament, no one has ever bothered to answer a basic question: Who wrote the letter? And why? The night before Hamza is to start journalism school, he has a chance meeting in Birmingham with the reporter Brian Reed, the host of the hit podcast S-Town. Together they team up to investigate: Who wrote the Trojan Horse letter? They quickly discover that it's a question people in power do not want them asking.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-trojan-horse-affair/id1606918193Zane Recommends - You Are Good#movies #duo #chattyhttps://blubrry.com/whyaredadsSarah Marshall and Alex Steed have always struggled to succinctly express just what their podcast is about. Until recently it was called Why Are Dads? and professed to explore films via the lens of their father figures. They stuck to this conceit for a little while — albeit with frequent, entertaining digressions — but soon a drift started to occur. The show started in August of 2020, and by the winter it wasn't uncommon that episodes would spend far more time on other areas than they did on fathers. By the spring, the digressions had completely overwhelmed the dads. Acknowledging that their focus had changed, this May the pair announced that they were changing the name to You Are Good (a reference to a touching scene of affirmation in Mel Brooks's Young Frankenstein that they'd discussed on an earlier episode).https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/you-are-good/id1527948382 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

At the end of 2013, a letter apparently setting out an Islamist extremist plot take over schools was set to Birmingham City Council: it prompted a massive national scandal, official inquiries and changes to the law. One small problem: it was fake. The viral hit Trojan Horse Affair podcast - presented by Serial's Brian Reed and Hamza Syed - brilliantly set out the astonishing truth about this scandal, which reveals damning truth about British society, our media and our politics. But since the podcast was released, much of the British media has aggressively come from Syed and Reed and their work - so the two meet us, explain the truth of what they've found - and face down the critics. Please subscribe - and help us take on the right-wing media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. It stars Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, and Richard Jenkins, among others.
