This week on the Toy Power Podcast, Trent is left alone in the Toy Power Studio whilst Ben and Scot are in Melbourne for the wedding of Fresh and Jessie (Congrats!), and Frank is off to the airport to welcome back Ali from London and Paris (yes, he survived 2 weeks of solo parenting). And just when it was time to bust out the Soapbox monologues, Colin comes to the rescue. Its all things Kickstarter including the incredible upcoming books titled G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero Field Guides by 3DJOES, and the arrival of the Creature Commando's wave 1 (4 figures - large animal warriors inspired by Battle Beasts) and then its over to another instalment of the Vintage Toy line Retrospective as we delve into a long running construction toy originally created by Milton Bradley - 1984's Robotix. Its the modular, motorized robot construction toy that was ahead of its time, which got 15 six minute long episodes (with a plot twist no-one saw coming) and a single issue comic book! Dan Larson refers to it as an "oddity", and a toy that was too nerdy and educational for the cool kids! A couple of other bits and bobs in here too, a new Lego certified store opening in SA, as well as some tariff analysis and Colin's take on how Canadian's feel about becoming the 51st US state. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/3djoes/3djoes-field-guidesSupport the show: http://patreon.com/toypowerpodcastSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Benmont Tench is the keyboardist and a founding member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. That's reason enough to listen to this podcast. I've interviewed other icons—Duff McKagan, Johnny Marr, and Jerry Harrison, to name a few—and they all have one common thread: a voracious appetite for art in all its forms. They consume books, movies, paintings, poetry, sculptures, you name it. Artists with longevity know that to create art, you have to constantly consume it.Tench is no exception. “The more I read, the more chance I have to get inspired because I'm opening myself up to language. But I'm inspired by all art; I'm even inspired by looking out the window. It all comes in, and it all shows up in my writing,” he says.  When I asked Tench if he favors any certain medium, his response was simple: “From Milton to Milton Bradley.” He's also the first songwriter I've interviewed to cite both Manet and the Steve Martin movie Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid as inspiration.Tench's solo album The Melancholy Season is out now. Send us a text

Hasbro is pretty much DONE making toys themselves, and it sounds like they're doubling down on outsourcing in 2025. How long until they outsource core brands like Transformers and GI Joe? Power Rangers is with Playmates. My Little Pony, Jem and Strawberry Shortcake are with smaller companies. Even Dungeons & Dragons board games are with Ravensburger and NOT WotC or Milton Bradley, which seems to indicate that even their games division isn't safe...

Welcome to Mysteries to Die For.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you in the heart of a mystery. All stories are structured to challenge you to beat the detective to the solution. These are arrangements, which means instead of word-for-word readings, you get a performance meant to be heard. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. This is Season 7, Games People Play. Games are about competition conducted according to rules with participants working toward a goal. Games are a part of every culture and are one of the oldest forms of social interaction and engagement. Games can be fun, challenging and exhilarating. They can also be intense, cutthroat, and lethal. This season, our authors have fashioned deadly games and unscrupulous villains to test your detection skills. This is Episode 21, Sorry is the featured game. This is Death by Candy Land by Kyra JacobsDELIBERATIONCandy Land is in chaos and Sheriff Cantalone has to figure out who gummed up this Halloween party by killing Harry Randall. Here are the players in the order we met them:• Mic Garcia, host and Lord Licorice who was being blackmailed by Harry• Savannah Livingston, the Lollipop Fairy who Harry flashed earlier that day• Tyler Livingston, the Peppermint Forest lumberjack who owned the hardware story Harry vandalized• Cindy Flannigan, Mrs. Nutt whose garden Harry trampled nightly• Sam Flannigan, dressed as a giant peanut whose fence Harry destroyed• The three Flannigan children, M&Ms who were mad Harry ruined the bounce house• Doc Hallers, King Kandy who Harry blamed for his mother's death• Herb Smathers, Gloppy the Chocolate Blob who Harry repeatedly belittledHere's what we know:• Harry was the neighborhood bully. Everyone except Mic had lodged complaints with the sheriff and complained that nothing was done.• Mic welcomed his guests into the back yard but said he did not see Harry until he was dead.• Tyler Livingston had met Harry at the decorated fence and told him to come in through the house. Savannah Livingston saw Harry in the kitchen, staring out the window. Doc Haller saw Harry take a pill and wash it down with liquor.• Harry spilled Herb's heart pills across the floor. Herb couldn't be sure they all were found.• The Livingston children said Harry banged on the outside of the bounce house, then crawled inside and refused to move.• Harry had cuts and scratches on his arms and his lips were tinted blue. ME speculated the blue may have come from an overdose. No explanation was given on the cuts and scratches.• Cindy Flannigan's rake had red orange stains she said was from mulch. No damage or marks were noted on the other props.• No one had any knowledge of illegal drugs. Mic said Harry kept to liquor and cigarettes. It's your move, where should Sheriff Cantalone go?ABOUT Candy LandPolio was an ancient disease that hit pandemic status in the 1940s and 1950s, crippling children and young adults until a vaccine was widely administered in 1955. Children recovering were bed bound and board. Teacher Eleanor Abbott, herself a victim of the disease, invented games to entertain recovering children, including Candy Land. Encouraged by friends, Abbott submitted her idea to Milton Bradley, who picked it up to fill-in their product line. It soon became their best selling game. In 2005, Candy Land was inducted into The Strong National Museum of Play. Candy Land has continued to grow and develop, offering game variations including special character editions and electronic editions so you can get your candy on no matter where you are.

Show Notes Episode 440: Booze Cruise to the Bermuda Triangle This week Host Dave Bledsoe goes to a Tiki Bar in Teaneck and gets lost on the way to the bathroom. (Again) On the show this week we examine the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. (We mean why people in the 1970's suddenly got so into the idea of the Bermuda Triangle.  The other stuff is easily explained.) Along the way we learn that Dave is like he is because parents in the 70's didn't love their kids enough. (This is a baseless lie told for comedic effect, his parents HAD to love him a lot not to give him up for adoption) Then we dive right into the mysterious region called the Devil's Triangle. (Not a euphemism for a well manicured bush) From its origins as some shit Christopher Columbus made up to make himself look cool, to some shit some dudes centuries later made up to sell books and magazines. (There is a common thread) We tell you about all the ways Hollywood made money off the triangle, and all the ways Milton Bradley made up to make money. (Yes, there was a board game!) Finally, we give you the rational explanation for what is happening you all need for closure. (Nothing, nothing is happening.) Our Sponsor this week is Eternal Cruise Lines, isn't it time to leave it all behind?  We open with Leonard Nimoy searching, and close with Gary Gee plotting some dark shit for his lady. An accident that really happened by an accident. Erno Rubik created his cube to visualize 3D space, but people just wanted to solve a puzzle. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not so secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Simple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen Sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. Here's one of those. [Seaside Plumbing Ad] Dave Young: Welcome back to the Empire Builders Podcast. Dave Young here alongside Stephen Simple. Stephen, you told me the topic today, and of course I know about it. Stephen Semple: Of course you do. Dave Young: I might even be able to guess the guy's first name and that I know that he was an Eastern European, but probably Russian, Erno Rubik, the inventor of the... Is it Erno? Stephen Semple: It is. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: Well done. Bing, Bing, bing, gold star, bing, bing. Dave Young: Bing, bing. Erno Rubik. We're going to talk about Rubik's Cube. Stephen Semple: Correct. Dave Young: Erno is the Rubik in question. It was the big toy when I was a kid. I'm thinking eighties, early eighties, late seventies. Is that kind of... My frustration with it is I've never been able to do it. I can't solve a Rubik's cube to save my life. Stephen Semple: I'm with you. Dave Young: I know people that can just, the ones that can go click, click, click, click, click, click, click and done. Stephen Semple: I hate them. Dave Young: Dang. With a passion. With a passion. Stephen Semple: I hate them. Yeah. Well, and when you say going on to be big, it went on to become the bestselling toy of all time, so big? Yes. The biggest, in fact, the biggest, in fact. The idea started in the 1970s, and if we go back to the 1970, games were primarily puzzles. And puzzles were kind of getting boring. Video games had just come out and were proving to be super popular, and were impacting other games. Other games and toys all started to incorporate lights and sounds and electronics. You remember Battleship? Battleship suddenly had sound effects where instead of you just saying, "You sank my battleship," you pressed a little sound and there'd be a little explosion and all that other stuff. Toys were all starting to incorporate this stuff, and Milton Bradley even predicted the time that every toy in the future would be electronic. That was the mindset at that moment. Then along comes Rubik's Cube with no electronics, no sound effects, sells 3 million units in three years and goes on to become the bestselling toy of all time. It's 1974, Erno Rubik is the professor at the Hungary College of Applied Arts, which at that time is part of the Soviet Union, so it's behind the wall. Dave Young: Yeah, it's part of the whole deal. Stephen Semple: He's a trained architect and he's teaching architecture and design. His father's an engineer, his mother's a poet, and he's really interested with how people interact with things. He would teach a class on how to do 3-D drawings, and he would start with a cube. When drawing, you can only see three sides at a time. This started out not as a toy, but as a teaching device. He wanted to get across the idea of thinking in three dimensions. How can you rotate things around a core? How does this impact the relationship to each one of the sides? He creates this cube where you can rotate the sides. Dave Young: Amazing, okay. Stephen Semple: But he still needs to track the movement to show the special relationships. He puts stickers on the faces, but as he starts to turn it, he realizes, "How do I get things to line up again?" When he tries to move it to solve it,

Wes and Nick review the Perfection Board Game Commercial, a fever dream from the mind of Les Claypool and Primus. Background: Perfection, originally produced by the Pennsylvania company Reed Toys, is a game by the Milton Bradley company. The object is to put all the pieces into matching holes on the board (pushed down) before the time limit runs out. When time runs out, the board springs up, causing many, if not all, of the pieces to fly out. In the most common version, there are 25 pieces to be placed into a 5×5 grid within 60 seconds.Support the show:

In this 66th edition of his Search for Meaning podcast, Stephen Wise Temple Senior Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback hosts board game designer Brian Hersch.Taboo. Outburst. Super Scattergories. Have you played any of these modern classics at family game night? You have Brian Hersch to thank. Now a General Partner at Hersch and Company, with over $850 million in sales under his belt, Brian didn't set out to design games. His first career was in real estate development, where he honed a keen sense for business. Then came Trivial Pursuit. When the trivia board game first burst onto the scene in the 1980s, Brian was a natural, so much so that his friends urged him to use his creative energies to invent a game of his own. Bringing his business experience to bear on the idea, he set himself to doing some market research, and found that the game's key feature—its social interactivity—was its most undervalued and under-marketed aspect."I'd played games my whole life," says Brian. "It was second nature. Some people watch television and say, 'I want to go into television.' Nobody who plays games says they want to go into games, at least not from our generation."Brian (a fan of the show who's currently listening to Rabbi Yoshi's interview with Betsy Borns) now runs Hersch and Company with his brother, and is famous for being a creator and proponent of social interactive games.Hersch has said that the reason he went into adult social games was because they served as a lubrication for rusty social skills. Children are less inhibited, and are more ready, willing, and able to have fun at any moment."They don't carry the burdens of life, the responsibilities, the weight of memories both good and bad," Brian says. "Can we facilitate a good time amongst a group of people who may or may not know each other? Can we find the common spark that they share so that they discover that there's something they can enjoy with the same feeling and laughter and pleasure? That's the biggest part of it. My games have always been group games."His titles have now sold over 45 million copies through strategic relationships with companies such as Milton Bradley, Parker Brothers, Mattel, and Western Publishing.

Rob Angel turned a simple idea and an outrageous dream into a cultural phenomenon. Beating industry giants Milton Bradley and Mattel at their own game, Rob led Pictionary to selling a staggering 38 million (!!!) games in more than 60 countries. Today, Rob shares how his intuition, passion and persistence led to creating the legendary game and how unconventional tactics led to unexpected success. Yet, my friends, this conversation is about so much more than Pictionary being one of the bestselling board games of all time. Since its release in 1935, Monopoly has been translated into 37 languages and is played in more than 103 countries around the globe. It's arguably the world's most famous board game. But this iconic pastime we now associate with cutthroat capitalism had a very different message when it was first conceived. In fact, it was only transformed into the version of Monopoly we know today because the rules were tweaked and customized as it passed from person to person in the first few decades following its conception. Today, the same crowdsourced feedback that helped create Monopoly, has helped usher in a board game renaissance. Crowdfunding and digital game platforms have reinvigorated the industry and given enthusiasts a hand in developing the games they love. Learn how our digital hive mind is improving how we play on this episode of Trailblazers. Featuring Philip Orbanes, Guido Teuber, Jonathan Ritter-Roderick, Marcin Swierkot and Davide Garofalo. For more on the podcast go to delltechnologies.com/trailblazers
