Look for the "website" field and make sure it points at your website. Steve Stewart started listening to podcasts while driving around for his job as an internal auditor for the fast food chains Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. More than a salvation from boredom, Steve loved that he could learn from podcasts while he was at the wheel. Eventually he started his own show: Money Plan SOS and became known as THE podcast guy at FinCon, a conference “helping financial influencers and brands create better content, reach their audience, and make more money.” Soon, people from this conference started asking Steve for help with podcast editing, thus launching a podcast editing career Steve  fell in love with. In this episode, Steve talks about how he nurtured his podcast niche to build the podcast editing career of his dreams.

It’s not every day you get to talk to one of the few people that supports so many of the great personal finance podcasts that we all gain insight from each week.  Steve Stewart is a podcast editor, hater of debt, believer and a family man! His story spans from being burdened by debt, to massively shifting his net worth to more than a million dollars, with over $500,000 in liquid assets and a paid off home. Today he shares his story with our House of FI family, and we couldn’t be happier. Money Story Steve doesn’t recall any significant family lessons surrounding money when he was a child.  However, he does remember always being relatively good with money. By the time he married his now wife at 33 years old, they were what he calls “average Americans”. They made money, they spent money and they paid on debt as they drifted along. Marriage and Finances The dreaded long commute gets such a bad wrap, but for many of us, it was the long commute that introduced us to either Dave Ramsey and/or the world of podcasting.  In Steve’s case, traveling around for his day job led him to Dave - and things were not “love at first sight”. While he disagreed with Ramsey at first, Steve soon started to realize that he and his wife weren’t actually doing as well as he thought they were.  With a young daughter and wife he began making financial changes, but still didn’t have a light bulb moment until much later. One example of sub-par financial decision making was in 2006 when Steve and his wife, though he listened to Dave Ramsey preach about the negatives of debt, financed a new car. Steve felt an immediate, dreadful sense of buyer’s remorse as soon as he drove out of the dealership lot.  It was that light bulb moment that he decided to get serious about managing his money. To right this wrong, and break the financial cycle, Steve and his wife proceeded to pay off the car in full by the end of 2007.   Finding a Calling Much like many of us in the personal finance space, the power and freedom you feel once you gain control of your money led Steve to want to help and teach others.  Long before he became a podcast editor, Steve started his own podcast. Money Plan SOS was a side project that grew out of Steve’s Financial Coaching side business.   At first, he freely helped others.  But it was his always helpful approach and a stroke of luck that led to the formation of his podcast editing business. During his attendance of FinCon in 2015, Steve overheard Paula Pant - now owner of the Afford Anything Podcast -  saying that she wanted to try her voice (hand) at podcasting. Steve offered to help. It was that podcast that opened the door to a never-ending source of referral traffic for Steve. Today he is the podcast editor for ChooseFI, Afford Anything and many others.  In fact, within 6 months of launching that first edited podcast, Steve was so busy that he had to retire everything else!   Preparing the Next Generation As a family man and a knowledgeable personal finance expert, I was interested in knowing how Steve decided to pass his financial knowledge and his entrepreneurial spirit to his now 18-year-old daughter.   While she has not started a podcast, nor learned to edit podcasts like her dad, Steve’s daughter does have a cool YouTube channel!  There she showcases her talent for drawing in a cool program called SAI. Check out her video here: Steve On The Final Questions: Money Lesson: Listening to Dave Ramsey - “you make too much money to be this broke” - hit him to his core. Life Hack: Put everything in google calendar, tasks, podcasts, dates, birthdays anniversary, travel plan, painting the basement. Favorite or Current Read: On Writing by Stephen King Dr. Thomas Stanley the Millionaire next door  - reads every year. You can find Steve primarily on twitter or on his website, Steve Stewart, or his twitter handle by the same name.

6 Ways Stories Make Your Podcast Powerful - Episode 106

Podcast Talent Coach

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 7, 2015 26:22

6 Ways Stories Make Your Podcast Powerful   The art of storytelling can be powerful. A story can pass life lessons from one generation to another. Tales can help people remember information. Stories bring words to life.   There have been thousands of great storytellers throughout time. You don't need to be Chaucer or one of the Brothers Grimm to use stories to make your content come alive. Use stories wherever possible, and your information will become engaging and entertaining. It will also be memorable.   Here are six ways stories help the information in your podcast become powerful, engaging content.   A LAND FAR, FAR AWAY   Stories help your listener escape his everyday life. A tale that is told well will transport your listener to another place and time through their imagination. You help them forget their problems.   When you tell stories in your podcast, you give your listener hope. Tales of success help your listener see what is possible. Tragic stories make him thankful for what he has. Stories that simply make your listener think help her better understand something.   Stories that contain wonderful, vivid words create fantastic pictures in the mind of your listener. When your listener is intently focused on your story, she forgets she is listening to a podcast. She is so engrossed by your story, everything around her has disappeared. Your content has become her sole focus.   HEY, I KNOW YOU   People trust people they know. If you're selling a product or service, people buy from people they trust. If you hope to make that sale, you need to create strong, meaningful relationships with your audience. Stories will help you develop those powerful relationships.   When you tell stories about yourself and your experiences, you reveal things about yourself. Revelation is a natural part of storytelling. Self-revelation allows your listener to get to know you. Your listener spends time with you every week as you tell him more and more about yourself. Then, even if you have never met him, your listener feels like he has known you for years. You're building a relationship without ever meeting. Stories of self-revelation help those friendships develop.   A great anecdote helps define your character. Your listener wants to know what to expect from you and your show. The stories you tell help define who you are. Your listener will get to know you. After some time, she will be able to predict how you will react to things. You become familiar. Familiarity is another ingredient to a healthy friendship.   HUMANITY   Stories are either compelling, humorous or tragic. A great narrative will make your audience marvel at, laugh at or better understand something. Feelings make you human.   When you evoke emotions in your audience, your listener feels like you are just like her. Your stories reveal real-life experiences. You are telling her you've had similar things happen in your life. She can relate. She thinks in her head, “You're one of us!” Your relationship continues to strengthen.   I REMEMBER THAT   Grimm's Fairy Tales are so memorable, because they are lessons disguised as wonderful stories. Over 200 lessons were included in the books from the Brothers Grimm. Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Hansel and Gretel are all stories that are remembered well nearly 200 years after they were written. Stories link words to pictures in order to make the words memorable.   Great stories will make your information memorable as well. Use the tale of your latest saga to make your point. It will help your listener remember your content.   LIVE VICARIOUSLY   Your listeners can live vicariously through you when you tell them a great story. If you tell you listener how you made a fortune with your information, he gets to experience your joy almost as if he made the fortune right along with you. Your words help create the imagery in his mind.   Help people dream. Create fantastic stories that people can see in their own theater of the mind. Paint great pictures with your words. Your listener will see your story in his head.   Stories allow your listener to feel they joy without experiencing the risk. Your audience can walk through your hardships and feel the elation as you survive without actually living the pain. Delightful stories entertain listeners, because they can experience so much in a short period of time through you.   TAKE A CAR RIDE   Your podcast is 30 minutes long. That's quite a bit of time to spend with someone. Will your listener want to spend 30 minutes in a car with you each week? When you record a podcast, you are asking them to do just that.   Your listener will spend meaningful, personal time with you each week. You better do all you can to create a strong relationship with your audience. Get listeners to like you.   When you reveal things about yourself through your stories, people will decide if they like you or not. Be real. Don't force your story or change the details simply to make people like you. Tell the truth. If you bend the truth this time, you may forget next time. The truth will always come out. When it does, your relationship will be tarnished for good.   Reveal the truth. People will see you as a real human being. They will get to like you for who you are, flaws and all. The friendship will develop. Next thing you know, you'll be taking a 30-minute car ride with them every week. Stories can make that happen.     Stories are powerful tools. They help your audience escape their problems. Anecdotes help your listener get to know you. That's where relationships begin. Your tales will show you are human. You are a real person with real flaws, just like your listener.   Stories will make your information memorable, by drawing pictures in the mind of your listener. Your audience can live vicariously through you when you tell them about your experiences. When you create that friendship, your listener will be willing to take that 30-minute car ride with you every week.     AUDACITY WORKSHOP I would like to thank Steve Stewart over at MoneyPlanSOS.com. Hey converts! It feels good to be back behind the mic! April was a busy month! Taxes were due to be filed and I had and audit for the previous year's taxes. Yikes! My wife and I Bought two houses using the 1031 exchange program to defer taxes on a house we sold in March. We rented both houses in just a couple of weeks. It feels good to have an additional source of revenue. I also helped Steve Stewart from MoneyPlanSOS.com buy a cash car. I recently read a book called The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan. There was a great quote in the book. It really resonated with me. "What's the ONE Thing you can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?" What if I told you if you did this one thing you could retire wealthy? Would you want to know what it is? This one thing. If you knew what this one thing was, would you do something about it? For most people, the answer is no. Shocked? You shouldn’t be. After all, millions of people smoke, eat unhealthy, or engage in other risky or unhealthy behaviors. These are life and death matters. If one won’t change to extend their own life, why would you or I think one would change simply to ensure a better retirement? Well, if you’ve been listening to this show, I’ve been telling. If fact I’ve been telling you since December of 2013. It may or may not shock you, but for most of you listening the one thing is the car payment. Really, the car payment? Doesn’t everyone have a car payment? Isn’t that just normal? Yes it is and there in lies the insidiousness of it. People quietly pay their lives away to drive a newer, sexier, faster, cooler, and whatever other er you can think of. Every day someone agrees to pay away their future for a car. Why is the car payment the one thing? Well, your mortgage is going to something that actually can help you build wealth. We found out in 2008, it doesn’t always, but for most of us and for most of history, this is true. What about student loan debt? It’s all over the news, isn’t that the worst debt? No, a bachelor degree is still worth about $800,000 in additional income over the course of a lifetime of employment. While I’m not encouraging anyone to take on this debt, the average student loan debt of $28,000 seems like a pretty good trade for that average return of $800,000. Do you still have a car payment? Why? Haven’t you been paying attention? Haven’t your heard? Auto debt is dangerous to your financial future! This is not a throw away line I just like to say on my show. This is what I believe! I know, I know. You can’t make that change right now because..…because… you know just pick your excuse. 1. You just “need” a new car.2. You drive a lot, so reliability is important to you.3. You don’t want your spouse, kids, or any other loved one to be stranded.4. You don’t have the cash to buy that first cash car. For some who would be honest it would be all about ego. Maybe I “need” to look successful. Or my favorite, I work hard so I deserve to drive something nice. What can getting rid of your indebted car do for you?You can take a big bite out of your current debt. You can increase your available cash by the amount of your car payment.Save your first $1,000 emergency fundPay off your other debts at an accelerated pace.Start saving for your next cash car, retirement, or child’s education. 4Q 2014:Average new car payment - $482Average new car price - $33,000Average new car loan amount - $28,381Average new car loan duration - 66 months Today, I want you to make a commitment to me and yourself. Today, I want you to do one thing to start on your journey to dump your auto debt. It doesn’t have to be a big step, but it has to be a step, a start, a move in the right direction. Maybe it’s a plan to sell everything in that storage building you’re renting for over $100 a month. Who knows how much you might get? Maybe it’s looking on edmunds.com or kbb.com to see how much your current car is worth. Maybe it is finding out what the pay off is on your current car loan. Whatever it is do it today. Start the journey today, don’t wait. We can all speak of yesterday’s regrets, but don’t live to regret today. Today is the day! Now is the time! Take action! In today's session, our guest is Steve Stewart from the Money Plan SOS and The Financial Wellness Show. He talks about his podcasting journey, how it is helping him work toward self-employment, the different types of podcasting formats, and the Pretty Link plugin (both the free and the pro versions).   Solo show The solo show is pretty obvious: you do the show alone. You prepare your notes or script and then record it by yourself. Of course, you could choose to have a live audience while you record, but yours is the only voice on the show. Interview show A popular podcast format is bringing different people on and interviewing them. This kind of format allows you to have another person to talk to, making it easier to have a flowing conversation. You are also able to bring (potentially) two audiences together (yours and your guests), making it a win-win for both people involved. Depending on your experience and personality, this can be an easy format to utilize. Co-hosted show A co-host can be great to provide an additional person, but brings more stability than the interview-based podcast. You and your co-host can develop a great relationship and the listeners can learn to expect the varying opinions. A caution here: both of you should love the topic, but if you both have the exact same opinion, then one of you isn't necessary. Feature show Box of Inspirations podcast is an example of a different format where the host is not on the show himself. He gets on Skype with his guests and has them share their inspirational story. Story-driven show Several podcasts, such as Serial, have become more popular. This is where there is a story that drives the podcast forward, usually spanning multiple episodes. Stories can be really engaging, but this format of a podcast can be more work than some of the others.   The post Steve Stewart (@moneyplansos) talks about his podcasting journey (3-3) appeared first on Creative Studio Academy.
