It's been a long time since the last time I've posted and this year has been a real test on everyone. Just so you know, I haven't been on the blog site because I'm still trying to put together a solid gaming group, which isn't always easy, but I have been busy in the meantime. So let me just go over a few things that I've been working on and will hopefully have much more for you as 2013 approaches. First off, Owlcon 2013 is coming up mid February and I will be running Monsters and Other Childish Things as one of my games. I'm running a modded version of it I developed based off the Shin Megami Tensei line of Japanese games. The two games just seemed to complement each other. If you're not familiar with the series, it centers around a group of kids, usually teenagers, who get a strange program on their phone that allows them to summon demons as the world around them is being destroyed. The players use demons to fight other demons and uncover a dark and interesting story. The second game I'm running is Big Eyes Small Mouth, and this time I'll be running in my frontier setting of Marukah. It's called Six Gun Samurai and you play as warriors sent in to investigate strange happenings in a small town. If you've ever seen Sukiyaki Wester Django you'll have an idea of the kind of setting I'm going for. After I get those time sensitive projects taken care of, I have two stories I'm in the process of writing, two game systems I'm working on writing up and publishing, a group I'm putting together for more campaigns and recordings, and continually developing the world I began with Anima so long ago. I will keep you updated as more becomes available. As for recordings, check back after Owlcon, or if I can get players together, much sooner. Believe me I want to play again, too.

Hello there, Internet!  Somewhat long time, and, uh. . . infinitely no see.  One of these days we should do a webcam thing so that we can rectify that.  UNTIL THEN, though, you will have to make due with our wondrous vocal patterns.  Listen to these MP3s while looking at the spectral view.  It’ll blow your mind, seriously. Wow, that got off-topic fast.  In any case, do we have some news for you: First and foremost, the Sordid Dystopia Kickstarter is doing amazingly well.  I applaud all of you who are backing us presently.  I never expected us to reach our initial funding goal in under a day, or twice our funding goal in under a week, and I never expected us to be talking about reaching almost triple our funding goal before this project ended.  Seriously, you guys are the best. Second, Nate and I did a roundtable discussion of Monsters and Other Childish Things with one Ross Payton.  He apparently does a roleplaying podcast too.  We’re going to be in their 70th Episode “There’s Monsters in the School, Tom.”  The episode isn’t yet out, but it should be out shortly after this episode goes live.  I figured I just needed to get the word out on this Role Playing Public Radio show Ross and his friend Tom do. Thirdly, Nate got us all into the Little Fears Nightmare Edition recently.  We’ve played 8 sessions of a campaign composed of prefab adventures from the books, the Campfire Tales series, and things that we’ve written ourselves.  It’s shaping up to be a pretty rad set of things and hopefully it’ll be totally awesome when it gets posted here eventually.  What this means for your right now is that we have a whole bunch of Little Fears goodies for every one of our listeners: Nate recently wrote a scenario for a contest run by Little Fears superfan Jack O’Tears.  The theme of the contest was Duality, and Nate wrote a whole adventure about a Monster and a child who complete each other.  You can get the adventure here or go to the Little Fears Facebook Group and take it from there.  It had to be fairly short, so be prepared to improv or write a couple things and make it your own for your group.  He also ran a quick playtest of it and we will be posting the AP to our […] The post The Drunk and the Newsies – 2-14-2012 appeared first on The Drunk and The Ugly.

Happy New Year, Internet!  We’re comin’ at you with an all new Newsies for an all-new year!  Listen in as we answer all of your questions (including ones you never thought you had)! If you missed it, we will be posting our interview with Sci-Fi Laboratory on this site next Wednesday.  Be sure to check it out. We have a whole bunch of new campaigns in the works and a bunch of other ones waiting in the wings.  So many games we shall play.  Systems include Wild Talents, Monsters and Other Childish Things, A Dirty World (we are really on an ORE kick I guess), Legend of the Five Rings, and Seventh Sea, and at least two of those campaigns are very Sci-Fi or Cyberpunk. Ship of Fools and United We Stand are coming to an end in the next few weeks here.  We’ll be breaking from the campaigns to post one-off games in Sordid Dystopia and other systems before returning to 2 more mini-campaigns: Justice For All, a Sordid Dystopia Campaign that focuses on the Umbra which was going to be a one-shot and ended up being 7 or 8 sessions. The Crucible, a Deadlands prefab adventure that was supposed to be a one-shot and ended up being 4 sessions (are you sensing a theme here?) Additionally, following the end of Ship of Fools and United We Stand, we will begin our Sordid Dystopia Kickstarter!  There are an increasing number of rewards for this beautiful thing.  Our own Nathan Knapp has written a novella set in the Sordid Dystopia Universe, several chapters of which will be included in this project. Since we’ve been getting so many questions about this, if you are interested in the playtest copy of Sordid Dystopia, it is one of the earlier rewards.  If you give a mere $10 and we get enough funding, you will receive a copy of  the playtest notes. Picture in your mind a far off time ago:  Before the AP Site,  the Podcast, and even back before this group existed.  Way, way back in December of 2010, Sean and I were playing Minecraft together, and he told me that he was interested in playing Monsters and Other Childish things.  At the time, I was running the Road Trip campaign for my friends nearby, and I had written a few side scenarios that I wanted to test out.  I told Sean about these, and he sounded interested.  He contacted his friend Nate and got him somewhat interested. At the same time, I met Alex through another Minecraft server and asked him if he’d like to play along in some short games with Sean and his (at the time) unknown friend.  Over the coming week, I would talk to each person about the characters they’d want to make, and by the end, we had Max Chang (the asian mathelete extraordinare), Daniel Kerington (the hero with as much courage as he has not-brains), and Charlie Bale (the lovable douchebag).  In the discussion portion of the first game, we also talked up BattlePet Network, a stupid little TV show about training monsters and saving the world through card games. As for the full setting, we’re playing Ross Payton’s Road Trip, which is basically a Summer Road Trip to save the world from an evil cult.  This setting is wildly different from the standard Monsters and Other Childish Things setting in a lot of ways: It’s set during the summer, so no one has to go to school It’s a series of adventures all around the country Less imperative is placed on the “being a kid” aspect, and more on over-the-top goofy action and fun It is very story-driven One of the reasons that I loved Road Trip when I was starting out with Monsters is that it’s a fully-written campaign.  If you don’t know what your player-base is, Monsters is kind of a bear to write for.  Road Trip simplifies things a lot by basically being a D&D campaign set in the Monsters Universe.  It’s a series of small adventures all around the country which add up to stopping a big bad evil guy.  And it’s a whole lot of fun. Why is this session called “Session 0”?  Because this entire adventure is non-canon.  As I said, I wanted to playtest some […] The post Road Trip Session 0 – Ed’s Diner appeared first on The Drunk and The Ugly.

We’ve talked about Monsters and Other Childish Things time and time again on The Drunk and The Ugly because it is my favorite RPG and because we play it very often. In spite of all that, we have yet to post a session of it.  Until now. A few weeks ago, our friend Nate (the guy who’s hosting this server) finally got his first set of dice ever, despite how he’s been gaming for over 10 years. Understandably, he wanted a medium to use them in. The Road Trip crew was unavailable and none of us really had anything prepared, so Nate wrote up a one-shot setting in about an hour. This setting was Mrs. Frieda’s Home for Terrible Freakish Children, and ended up becoming sort of a side campaign that is more flexible player-wise, as it’s a fixed position with lots of children, so kids can jump in and out as they need to. In a nutshell, Mrs. Frieda’s Halfway Home for Children (its official name) is a halfway home for children taken from abusive homes. Why has it gotten the reputation that it has? Because most of the children here responded to the abuse in their homes with abuse of their own. Everyone has their own reasons for being here, and most of them are never going to leave this place with a new family. While everyone has secrets to hide, some kids have worse secrets than others: Some kids have “special friends” that would freak out everyone in the city, and others are slowly transforming into eagles. Not everyone has these kinds of problems, mind you, but a few kids within this establishment do. Mrs. Frieda’s is about the life and times of these children. Experienced players of One-Roll Engine games may notice that we’re not using the hard and fast ORE rules. This is mainly because the One-Roll Engine becomes very cumbersome in games with large numbers of players, and especially in Skype games. We’re using a homebrewed version that involves a single d10 and rolling under the combined number of a stat and skill. Height and Width are determined by margins of success (and in combat, a separate die is rolled for height). It’s different, but it works much better for our group.
