He's hoping you will come up with your own twist on cash or candy this year. Also, Ray Baraldi and Richard Flahive of HighTower Advisors discuss real assets' role in a portfolio during volatile times, Terry Jones of Investor's Business Daily covers the latest IBD Investor Optimism Index and Trip Miller of Gullane Capital Partners covers value investing in the Market Call.
Richard Flahive of HigTower Westchester and Ray Baraldi of Sarian Strategic Partners stressed in Collective Wwsdom that figuring out how to make savings last a lifetime takes more than picking the right retirement date. It requires appropriate timing on when to take Social Security, proper calculations of your future needs andyour budget and more.
Peter Vanderlee of ClearBridge Investments said that between low payout ratios and reasonable rates of growth, investors in dividend-paying stocks should have a positive outlook as they play defense against the slowing economic and market conditions likely to be in place over the next few years. Vanderlee noted that while there has been a flight to safety among investors, they have not bid up dividend-payers to where investors can't get fair values and the occasional bargain. Also on the show, Ray Baraldi and Richard Flahive of HighTower Advisors discussed the processes they believe investors should be following during the 'accumulation phase' of their lifetimes, Matt Schulz of CompareCards.com talked about how many consumers now find back-to-school shopping more stressful and costly than holiday shopping, and Randy Bateman of Balcones Investment Research returned to the Market Call to talk top-down investing and the companies that will benefit from robotics
Ray Baraldi of Sarian Strategic partners and Richard Flahive of HighTower Westchester discussed the 'accumulation phase' of every saver/investor's lifetime and how gathering, gaining and controlling assets is better and easier with a defined process, rather than some vague make-as-much-as-you-can idea. Baraldi noted that planning helps to eliminate stress and uncertainty that makes investors uncomfortable; Flahive added that planning -- especially for items that most investors overlook, such as taxes -- helps to maximize accumulation opportunities.
Richard Flahive of HighTower Westchester and Ray Baraldi of Sarian Strategic Partners discuss the merits of real assets -- precious metals, real estate, commodities and more -- in a portfolio and how they use real assets as a diversifier, both based on current market conditions and on long-term portfolio goals.

Jimmy Hausberg of the Hausberg Group said he is looking for disruptive technologies when he tries to spot the next great investment area, while Jeff Kelly of Kelly and Wohlner said he thinks cannabis are the hot stock idea. Ray Baraldi of Sarian Strategic Partners said he favors the disruptors, but uses a cannabis ETF investment for clients determined to own pot stocks. One thing all agreed on was using ETFs for emerging, nascent industries
College professor and author Robin Feldman said that secret deals and strategies used by the drug industry has medicine costs rising even when they shouldn't be. The system, she explained, favors higher-cost drugs at the expense of more-affordable care. Jeff Kelly, chief investment officer at The Kelly and Wohlner Group in Denver, said there is a compelling case to be made for iincome-oriented investors with a balanced portfolio to make a slight increase to their allocation toward ultra-high quality long-term bonds. His HighTower colleagues, Jimmy Hausberg from the Hausberg Group in Beverly Hills, Calif., and Ray Baraldi of Sarian Strategic Partners in suburban Philadelphia -- both were a bit more cautious on long-term bonds noting that a muddy rate picture makes them nervous about extending durations too far out.
David Payne, staff economist at Kiplinger.com, said that the economic underpinnings remain solid and strong, but aren't 'amazing,' which should lead to a year of heightened volatility and muted market returns. He noted that the market now seems to expect the Federal Reserve to be done with rate hikes at least until very late int he year. Also on the show, Bill Thrush, Richard Lewis and Ray Baraldi of HighTower Advisors discuss how they help consumers set appropriate expectations, Jason Reposa of MyBankTracker.com talks about what people affected by the government shutdown can do to get some assistance and relief frmo creditors, and Scott Klimo of Saturna Capital and the Amana Funds has the Market Call.
