Seven years after Slow wrote its first check, Sam sits down with Teamshares CEO Mike Brown as the company prepares to go public. Mike's core insight is simple: America has millions of durable, cash-flowing small businesses, but no great long-term owner. After buying and operating electrical contractors himself, he realized the opportunity wasn't another marketplace or PE roll-up, it was building a permanent holding company that acquires great businesses, gives employees ownership, and never sells. Today, Teamshares owns 92 businesses generating roughly $60M in EBITDA. The conversation explores why most roll-ups fail, why capital allocation is the true operating system of the business, and why the traditional private equity model may be running out of steam. Mike closes with an ambitious goal: grow corporate EBITDA from $19M to $100M by 2027 and create a forever home for thousands of small businesses.Chapters00:00 Episode Teaser Featuring Mike Brown, Teamshares CEO01:11 The Teamshares Origin Story04:48 From Wall Street to Buying Small Businesses10:47 Why Going Direct to Sellers Didn't Work (The FSBO Problem)13:18 Buying at Scale, The Teamshares Model15:27 92 Acquisitions and $60M EBITDA, Lessons Learned18:26 Why Generalist Hires Didn't Work19:08 Building a Leadership Pipeline23:46 The Internal YC, Community Across Portfolio Companies27:42 How Technology Powers 92 Businesses28:08 “Will This Business Exist in 50 Years?”32:21 Why Most Roll-Ups Fail37:30 The Road to $100M EBITDA39:51 The Long-Term Vision40:58 Capital Allocation as a Competitive Advantage42:34 Decentralized Leadership, Centralized Capital46:16 Why Private Equity Fails Small Businesses49:25 Going Public, What Comes NextWe're also on ↓X: https://twitter.com/moreorlesspodInstagram: https://instagram.com/moreorlessYouTube: https://youtu.be/3tV4wdtZBukConnect with us here:1) Sam Lessin: https://x.com/lessin2) Dave Morin: https://x.com/davemorin3) Jessica Lessin: https://x.com/Jessicalessin4) Brit Morin: https://x.com/britImportant Disclosures and Disclaimers:Teamshares has entered into a definitive agreement for a business combination with Live Oak Crest Acquisition Corp. .entry-img img{ display:none !important; } .single .hentry .entry-img{ display:none !important; } https://open.spotify.com/episode/3cW4LImOlr2eDc6opOmyPp Going public is often seen as the ultimate milestone for a successful business, yet for many great companies it marks the beginning of decline rather than a new chapter of sustainable growth. In this episode of The Grow CFO Show, host Kevin Appleby sits down with Eric Ries, author of The Lean Startup, to explore why so many mission-driven, high-performing companies lose their way after an IPO – and what CFOs and boards can do differently to prevent this fate. The conversation frames governance not as a legal box-ticking exercise, but as a strategic discipline that protects long‑term value, mission, and trust. Through vivid case studies – from Saul Price and the origins of Costco, to Novo Nordisk and its foundation structure, to Johnson & Johnson's Credo – Eric shows how governance choices can either entrench short‑term shareholder primacy or build what he calls a “governance fortress” that shields companies from destructive external pressures. He argues that CFOs are uniquely placed to champion this new governance, redefine profit around human flourishing, and ensure the organization can't make money except by achieving its mission. The result is a powerful toolkit for finance leaders who want to keep their companies “incorruptible” long after they hit the public markets. About Eric Ries Over the last two decades, Eric Ries's ideas about continuous innovation, long-term thinking, governance, and market reform have reshaped company building and management practices. He is the creator of the Lean Startup method, and the author of the New York Times bestseller The Lean Startup; The Leader's Guide; and The Startup Way.  As a founder, he has put his own ideas into practice with The Long-Term Stock Exchange (LTSE); Answer.AI, an AI R&D lab; Virgil, a legal services startup; and IMVU. On The Eric Ries Show, he talks with world-class technologists, thought leaders, and executives building for the long-term. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and three children. Key topics covered: Why good companies lose control and drift after going public. FedMart and Costco: how governance protects long‑term value. “Governance fortress” structures that resist short‑term investor pressure. Novo Nordisk: mission‑driven governance leading to massive value creation. Why most M&A destroys value and how CFOs should filter deals. Redefining profit around human flourishing and the CFO's new role. REPLAY! This conversation is too important to hear only once, and Jackie Goldschneider is exactly the reason why. Eating disorder recovery is not about food, and she wants you to understand why.On this episode of Wellness Junkies, host Amy Sherman sits down with Jackie Goldschneider, author, activist, and Real Housewives of New Jersey former cast member, to talk about something rarely discussed with this level of honesty. Jackie lived with anorexia for nearly two decades before finding her way to health in her mid-forties, and her story is a reminder that eating disorder recovery can happen at any stage of life. Her memoir, The Weight of Beautiful, was born from the experience she wished she'd had when she was searching for answers. She opens up about what it felt like to live inside an illness that nobody around her truly understood, why eating disorders in women so often go unrecognized, and what she wants families to know about eating disorder mental health. Telling someone to just eat does not work, and this conversation explains why.Jackie also reflects on the relationship between mental health and body image, the role compulsive movement played in her disorder, and the moment she finally decided to ask for help. For anyone who has struggled personally or watched someone they love struggle, eating disorder awareness starts with honest conversations like this one.She shares what life looks like now, from friendships and writing, to therapy and learning that good enough is sometimes exactly enough.Episode Breakdown:00:00 Jackie Goldschneider on Eating Disorder Recovery and Advocacy01:28 Weekly Highs With Amy and Jackie03:29 How Anorexia Took Hold and What No One Talked About06:02 What People Get Wrong About Eating Disorder Mental Health08:32 The Rock Bottom Moment That Changed Everything13:00 Going Public on Real Housewives and the Fallout18:00 Writing The Weight of Beautiful and Why It Had to Exist25:00 Eating Disorders in Women and the Silence Around Them32:00 What Recovery Actually Looks Like Day to Day38:00 Beauty Favorites and Product Picks44:00 Quick Beauty Routine46:00 How Jackie Stays Grounded and What Keeps Her GoingConnect with Jackie Goldschneider:Follow Jackie on Instagram Shop this episode: You know we love to give you the best of the best in wellness products and resources to help you learnmore about our podcast topics. Jeffrey explains how companies staying private too long can create brittle capital structures, make it harder to recruit talent, complicate acquisitions, and misalign investors, while going public can simplify the cap table, lower the cost of capital, and raise credibility and visibility. He also discusses why companies like Oracle and AOL went public earlier in past decades, what changed in the US markets (including decimalization, regulation, reduced research, and litigation), and how GPO Fund builds diversified international investor bases to help founder-led technology companies accelerate global expansion and IPO readiness, highlighting the growing role of emerging middle-class capital, AI-driven market efficiency, and evolving tokenization and settlement trends. We explore the deep biblical meaning of baptism, tracing its roots from the Jordan River crossing in Joshua to the baptism of Jesus and the early church. We see that baptism not as a ritual that saves, but a powerful public declaration of faith, forgiveness, new life, and allegiance to Jesus Christ. We unpack how baptism serves as a memorial, a witness, and a step of obedience for those who have already trusted Jesus. Faith often requires stepping into the water before seeing the miracle. Ever wonder how venture capitalists actually judge your startup behind closed doors? In this episode of the BRAVE Southeast Asia Tech Podcast, Jeremy Au breaks down the brutal reality of VC economics and the math that drives the tech industry. We explore why just 5% of startups generate almost all of a fund's returns (The Power Law) and why struggling founders often get left behind. We also dive into real-world case studies, analyzing the dramatic valuation shifts during Instacart's IPO, and unpacking the legendary $1 Billion dilemma faced by the founders of Instagram (Kevin Systrom) and Snapchat (Evan Spiegel). Whether you're building an AI-native startup in Singapore or scaling a deep-tech company in the Philippines, understanding MOIC, DPI, and how the smart money moves is crucial. 00:00 - The VC's Dual Role: Value-Add vs. Portfolio Judge 01:02 - The Power Law: Why 5% of Startups Carry the Fund 01:38 - The Help Paradox: Prioritizing Winners Over Strugglers 02:23 - Case Study: Valuation Shifts in the Instacart IPO 04:21 - Exit Outcomes: Liquidations, Acqui-hires, and Cash-outs 04:58 - The $1 Billion Dilemma: Instagram vs. Snapchat 05:59 - Going Public & Raising VC Funds (LP/GP Dynamics) 06:51 - The Brutal Math of VC Returns: MOIC & DPI 09:03 - Outro & Community Resources Watch, listen or read the full insight at https://www.bravesea.com/blog/vc-economics-exit-strategies Get transcripts, startup resources & community discussions at https://www.bravesea.com WhatsApp: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VakR55X6BIElUEvkN02e TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jeremyau Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jeremyauz Twitter X : https://x.com/jeremyau LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/bravesea English: Spotify | YouTube | Apple Podcasts Bahasa Indonesia: Spotify | YouTube | Apple Podcasts Chinese: Spotify | YouTube | Apple Podcasts #VentureCapital #Business #Startup #Podcast #southeastasia #techpodcast

Why a Human Voice Still Matters: Internet Grandpa on Reading Aloud

Classical Conversations Podcast

You may already recognize his voice. For thousands of Classical Conversations families, Charles Hall — known simply as "Internet Grandpa" — has become one of the most beloved figures in the homeschool community, reading rich living books aloud on YouTube and blessing families he has never met. In this episode of the Everyday Educator, host Kelli Wiltsits down with Mr. Hall to talk about how it all started, what it means to hear a human voice read a story, and what happens when faithful work runs into unexpected obstacles. Charles Hall never set out to become Internet Grandpa. It started simply — reading picture books on YouTube so his grandchildren, scattered from Florida to Pittsburgh, could hear his voice. He made the videos unlisted at first, then figured there was no harm in making them public. What followed was something he never anticipated. CC families discovered his recordings, and comments began pouring in — parents of struggling readers, moms multitasking through housework, kids making the transition from Foundations into Challenge who needed a warm, steady voice to carry them through books like The Secret Garden and Carry On, Mr. Bowditch. His subscriber count passed the number of friends and family, and Internet Grandpa was born. Kelli opens the episode by sharing her own family's story — her daughter found Mr. Hall's recordings at exactly the right moment, helping her step into independence as a learner while her mom worked nearby. It's the kind of testimony that appears again and again in his comment section. The conversation turns to why the human voice matters so much. Mr. Hall connects it all the way back to the womb — children hear their parents' voices before they are born, and that bond between voice and love is something no machine can replicate. Jesus, he notes, did most of his ministry through storytelling. People haven't changed much in 2,000 years. He closes with a story about his son Christopher — a boy who hated reading, until his dad started leaving him at cliffhangers. One night his wife found Christopher in bed with a flashlight, finishing the chapter himself. That's what Internet Grandpa hopes for every child who hears his voice. What You'll Learn: - How a grandfather reading Narnia to his kids 40 years ago eventually became a YouTube ministry for thousands - Why stories told by a human voice still matter in an age of AI — and what children hear even before they are born - How Internet Grandpa's recordings have helped struggling readers, busy moms, and kids transitioning into CC Challenge - The cliffhanger trick he used to turn his reluctant reader son into a flashlight-under-the-covers reader - How to support, pray for, and stay connected with Internet Grandpa right now   Resources: https://www.youtube.com/@InternetGrandpa   This episode of Everyday Educator is sponsored by: Summit Ministries Do you want your child to have conversations that challenge, encouragement that endure, and friends and faith for life? Jeffrey Stewart brings his new book, The Great Rewiring of Capital Markets, which covers how capital has gone global and sharpened its interest in high-growth tech companies. Regulations are moving to allow access – and it's important for these companies to go public. He thinks it's a “golden era” for IPOs where companies won't wait as long to go public, vs the “mega” IPOs we've been seeing over the past few years. He sees gains in “the thousands” ahead for some of these companies.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – / schwabnetwork Follow us on Facebook – / schwabnetwork Follow us on LinkedIn - / schwab-network About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

We keep digging into Chris HOJ's MJ 1 of 1 dilemma, but with a new angle: why talk about it publicly at all? Chris explains he's not trying to broadcast to the whole world, he's thinking out loud in a tight community, building clarity through dialogue, and inviting outside lenses that can change how he sees the problem. Joe pushes the biggest question of all: after the maneuver is done, do you actually love the card, or do you love the concept? Chris admits the Jordan 90s 1 of 1 project is new since June 2025, and this card was not something he was hunting. The auction forced the decision. He also drops a key distinction: this is “rare and obscure” more than “rare and iconic,” which makes it feel risky from a market standpoint even if it matters deeply to him. We run through chat questions that cut right to the psychology: happiness vs regret, “best” vs “rarest,” the autograph angle, and whether the joy gap matches the value gap. The community also debates prudence and optionality, with the clearest takeaway being that you can “afford” something in card capital while still wondering if you can mentally afford the consequences. Then we pivot to the hobby experience itself: Chris recaps the San Diego Front Row Card Show, including the sports vs TCG mix and a smart “zag” on why those tables can actually speed up the walk. Josh checks in from the Dallas Card Show with pickups and consignments. Finally, Chris introduces a new topic that came directly from Jonathan's presence on the show: the tradeoff between being a public collector and a private collector. Does visibility help you build a network, buy cards, and sell cards? Does it also expose you, influence what you collect, and create “flex points” that shape your decisions? We start unpacking what you gain, what you lose, and how discovery changes if you are lurking versus not participating at all. In this part, we cover: Why Chris goes public with the dilemma and how dialogue changes decisions “Do you love the card or the concept?” and the risk of a new collecting lane Rare and obscure vs rare and iconic, and why that matters Optionality: 100 cards vs 1 card and the tradeoffs of going all in San Diego Front Row Card Show recap and sports vs TCG reality Josh's Dallas Card Show notes and consignments New topic: public collector vs private collector and what it changes Subscribe to Sports Cards Live on YouTube so you catch the live show every week Follow @jlee_sportscardslive on Instagram for clips, updates, and behind the scenes If you're watching on YouTube, hit like and drop a comment: would you go public with a hobby dilemma like this? My guest today is Henry Ellenbogen, founder and Managing Partner of Durable Capital Partners. Henry built his reputation at T. Rowe Price, where he led the New Horizons Fund and turned it into one of the best-performing small-cap growth portfolios in the country. In 2019, he left to start Durable. His philosophy is grounded in a simple belief that great investing is about understanding people and change. Henry has spent his career studying the rare 1% of companies that drive nearly all long-term returns . Durable's edge comes from being able to tell the difference between a company that is failing and one that is transforming. Henry often talks about “Act II” teams – founders who take the lessons from their first company and apply them to a new frontier. Durable itself is his Act II. In our latest Colossus profile, Managing Editor Dom Cooke traces Henry's story and specifically how he became one of the most influential investors of the 21st century, having learned from founders like Jeff Bezos and John Malone in the early part of his career. I always hear the same thing from founders who've met Henry: “he understood my business faster than anyone”. The thing that sticks with me from our conversation and Dom's profile is just how much he loves investing.
