On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of fantastic songwriters in a sweet conversation about craft and life in general: Sima Cunningham and Roberto Lange. Lange has been making fascinating, lovely music under the name Helado Negro since 2009, mixing breezy indie-rock with electronic sounds, frequently with more than a passing nod to his Ecuadorian roots. His sonic world is always inviting, even as it's sort of otherworldly, and he often matches those sounds with cool visuals—which is no wonder considering his background in computer art. Earlier this year, Lange released the eighth Helado Negro album; it's called Phasor, and it's among his best, mixing tranquil sounds with his searching spirit. You might be lulled and puzzled at the same time, which is a great feeling. Check out the song “Colores del Mar” right here. The other half of today's conversation, Sima Cunningham, is best known as half the core of Chicago band Finom, originally known as OHMME. Finom released its Not God earlier this year, and it's full of unexpected pop turns tied together by the harmony between Cunningham and her longtime musical partner Macie Stewart. But the occasion for today's conversation is actually Cunningham's second solo album, just out on Ruination Records. It's called High Roller, and it explores a more personal side to her songwriter. For example, there's a great song written for Cunningham's brother Liam Kazar, himself a musician and one-time Talkhouse Podcast guest as well. Check out “For Liam” right here. In addition to that song, which Lange points out as a favorite on High Roller, these two chat about Cunningham's adventures in Ireland, what it's like to create an on-stage persona and interact with your audience, and how Cunningham's new album was a 10-year journey that was worth the wait. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:40 – Start of the chat 5:56 – Sima's mom is the most punk-rock person in their musical family 14:58 – Roberto on getting to a certain age in music 15:39 – Finding new ways to have a love affair with your audience 22:39 – Sima on figuring out how to be honest and vulnerable with her solo material 29:59 – Sima on playing new Finom songs and trying to figure out where to play solo Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Sima Cunningham and Roberto Lange for chatting. What do you do when the music stops and there's no dancing in the distraction machine? For Jenn Wasner, like so many of us, that was her pandemic year. She had become “incredibly adept at outrunning myself,” so when her life as a touring musician was paused and two relationships ended she realized that picking up the guitar was not going to bring peace. Jenn Wasner's band Wye Oak, her collaboration with Andy Stack, is connoisseur-grade indie rock and her deep musicality has earned her spots on the Bon Iver and Sylvan Esso touring line-ups. She just released her best solo work as Flock of Dimes and the moving, evocative songwriter that has won over so many showed up in our interview. Even if you've never been in the spotlight, we think you'll identify with Jenn's poignant, often funny and piercingly true reflections on why we can't let the outside give us our inside. Plus, you get a surprise detour discussion about the Enneagram. Get to know Jenn better: Flock of Dimes' Jenn Wasner: 'I became incredibly adept at outrunning myself' An instrument of healing with Jenn Wasner and Helado Negro - Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak and Flock of Dimes, Roberto Lange (aka Helado Negro), Hand Habits' Meg Duffy and saxophonist Joseph Shabason discuss music as a form of healing. Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak and Flock of Dimes, Roberto Lange (aka Helado Negro), Hand Habits' Meg Duffy and saxophonist Joseph Shabason discuss music as a form of healing and the impact it has both on themselves and those who listen to it, not being able to find the right thing to say when they're approached after a show, and how selfishness can benefit the creative process. Roberto Lange, aka Helado Negro, is an Ecuadorian-American singer, songwriter and producer. His 2019 album, This Is How You Smile, was critically adored and his newest, Far In, is due later this year. Musician and guitarist Meg Duffy hails from New York, and is the founder, songwriter and sole permanent member of indie rock group Hand Habits, who released their latest album Placeholder in 2019. They have also written and performed with The War on Drugs and Weyes Blood. Canadian saxophonist and ambient electronic artist Joseph Shabason has worked with Destroyer, The War On Drugs, Hannah Georgas, and many more. His latest album, The Fellowship, explores the duality of the Jewish and Muslim household he grew up in.

Since 2009, the Ecuadorian-American singer and songwriter Roberto Lange has been making records under the name Helado Negro (that’s “black ice cream” in Spanish.) His music has been literally bilingual, in the sense that he sings in both Spanish and English, but it’s also been metaphorically bilingual, with its mix of art and pop. 2016's Helado Negro album, Private Energy, responds to the Black Lives Matter movement, and contains some explicitly political material. They play some of those songs, in-studio. (From the Archives, 2017.) Here's "Young, Latin & Proud," in 360:

Roberto Lange grew up in South Florida, or as he calls it, "the capital of Latin America." It's a landing place for so many Spanish-speaking cultures -- think Columbia, Trinidad, Ecuador, and of course Cuba. Lange ingested the flavors of these cultures, then mixed them with the inescapable sounds of Miami bass music. The result is a project he calls Helado Negro. Until recently concocting Helado Negro songs was largely the job of Lange programing beats, playing keyboards and crooning (in English and Spanish). Occasionally he'd have a friend or two help out and give input and add an instrument or two, but it was mostly a solo affair. He recently decided to pull out all the stops and orchestrate a one-night-only Helado Negro performance as part of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra's Liquid Music series. 17 musicians gathered on stage to reinterpret Lange's compositions. Guest singers and acoustic instruments brought out new textures, some of which were remixed and reprocessed live, onstage. Lange called the event his "Island Universe Story (Cuentos del Universo Solitario). In this installment of Music is Music, Roberto Lange talks about the background and collaborations that went into making this special event. Check out the entire concert and an interview with Lange.
