Stoked to have Meg Duffy, better known as Hand Habits, on the podcast. They are not the biggest hoops fan, but it was great to talk with them about the sport, the WNBA, and how this might be the year that they get into the NBA. Plus, they have a great new album and we pull an NBA Tarot. Tim Carr (Perfume Genius, Hand Habits) is singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and session drummer based on Los Angeles. His newest album (out now) Pleasure Drives is a future looking vacillation of hi and low fi production drenched in California sunlight. Tim explains how growing up in a musical family ultimately led him to a career in both production and performance. He shares his experience at Cal Arts and how that encouraging community helped him find authentic expression. He tells us why the Pleasure Drives cover art guided him through finishing the record and why it felt natural to lean into a more digital in the approach. Joe and Tim discuss the challenges of finding the core of a song, the strength of limitations in writing and they entertain the wacky idea of tracking drums without any other instruments to guide the song. Ian chats with Meg Duffy about the difference (or lack thereof) between an EP and an LP, working with Blake Mills & Daniel Aged, establishing a solo career while collaborating with other artists, the challenge of writing love songs, bridging the gap between hip non-binary kids and ponytailed guitar guys, and their excellent new Hand Habits record. "I write the most when I'm supposed to be doing something else because it tricks me into thinking that songwriting is rebellious," Meg Duffy (aka Hand Habits) told me. "It feels like I get to choose to do it." I love this quote so much. It illustrates how we sometimes have to trick ourselves into being creative. Duffy used the word "summon" a few times in our conversation regarding their songwriting process, which implies actively calling on something to be present rather than passively receiving it. This is the eternal question for the songwriter: do you wait for the muse or try to summon it?Summoning can happen everywhere for Duffy: they even did some summoning during a recent oil change. Duffy also uses walking as a way to summon. In this episode, we dig into all our collective methods of summoning. But stay for the hilarious story of how, when Duffy lived below Kyle Thomas (aka King Tuff), summoning became very, very difficult. The latest album by Hand Habits is Blue Reminder. It's incredible.
Rebecca Shiffman is a singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles via NYC. Her newest record, Before The Future, is set to release on July 25th and includes studio contributions from Chris Cohen, Tim Carr (Perfume Genius, Hand Habits), SASAMI and Luke Temple (Here We Go Magic). Rebecca shares her experience growing up in Manhattan with culture forward parents and how a high school classmate with a four-track recorder opened the door to the power of DIY creativity. Joe the Rebecca discuss the forthcoming single Little Mr. Civility (out May 20th), what the inspirations are behind the song and how it conjures up memories of early parenting. Rebecca tells us why Before The Future is stacked with heavy hitters, how her lyrics dictate the direction of each song and why she decided to take more of a producer role with the new record. We interviewed producer, engineer, and mixer, Chris Coady, back in 2016 for Tape Op issue 113. He has worked with TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Future Islands, Beach House, DIIV, The Drums, Porches, Amen Dunes, Sasami, Hand Habits, and countless other artists. Geoff Stanfield caught up with Chris from his studio in Glendale, CA, to discuss a wide range of topics ranging from his formative years in Baltimore, his days at New York City's Quad Studios, and his approach to recording and mixing. Enjoy!

We're getting candid in our interview with meija. meija, aka Jamie Sierota, grew up performing in the family band Echosmith. He left the band at 20 years old to start a family and be a songwriter and producer. After some time away from the spotlight, he started his own artist project – meija. His sophomore album There's Always Something comes out October 11th, featuring collabs from JAWNY, Hand Habits and EELS. We talk to Jamie Sierota about how he dealt with the overnight success of being in Echosmith as a teenager, why he had to take time away from the spotlight to find his own voice as a musician, and how he is processing his own emotions and past experiences through the making of his sophomore album. We're surrounded by a lot of noise. Whether it's literal noise such as traffic and people's chatter or metaphorical noise in the form of a neverending supply of media, art and social content, it can be hard to cut through it all. On this episode of Sunday Sanctuary, join Petra as she explores the impact our noisy world can have on our body and our wairua/spirit. Grace McArthur returns to lead us in another exploration of Brené Brown's book Atlas of the Heart. Jay Ruka (Dean of St Mary's Cathedral in New Plymouth and author of Huia Come Home) also joins Petra to dive into how he has noticed the noisiness of his life change over time. We know that a podcast episode exploring the downsides of noise is ironic, but our hope is that you'll be inspired to look into how you can start to deal with the noise that is everpresent in our world. Meet Sofia Wolfson, a Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter, writer, and Fretboard Journal contributor who just released an incredible album called 'Imposing on a Hometown.' This project features a bunch of former Fretboard Journal subjects and contributors, including Meg Duffy of Hand Habits, Mason Stoops, and Harrison Whitford. Mostly though, it's a collection of great songs by an incredibly talented guitar fanatic. During our chat, we talk about growing up in LA (and the unique venues that helped shape Sofia's music community), the beauty of the Gibson J-45, working at LA's famed Old Style Guitar Shop (where Reuben Cox famously makes rubber bridge guitar mods and started a mini-movement), the making of 'Imposing,' the influence of Margaret Glaspy and so much more. We also talk about Sofia's soon-to-be-published interview with Big Thief's Adrianne Lenker in the Fretboard Journal. http://www.sofiawolfson.com/ https://sofiawolfson.bandcamp.com/album/imposing-on-a-hometown Give 'Imposing on a Hometown' a listen and then sit back and hear the story behind it here. This week, we talk to Meg Duffy, the stellar guitarist and songwriter best known as Hand Habits. https://www.handhabits.band Meg grew up in upstate New York and took up guitar as a teenager. They attended the local community college's guitar program (the only non-male student in their class) and performed with a wide variety of local singer-songwriters and bands before a fortuitous encounter opening for Kevin Morby. Meg ended up touring with Morby and eventually moved to LA where they've worked for Christian Lee Hutson, The War on Drugs, Perfume Genius, and numerous other artists when they're not working on Hand Habits. Best of all, Meg is still often using the Fender Deluxe Lone Star Strat they bought as a teenager. During our chat, we talk about how Meg found guitar and its important role in their upbringing; why Hand Habits' fanbase has "family therapy energy;" trying to emulate Blake Mills' parts touring with Perfume Genius; 'Doubles,' Meg's gorgeous new instrumental record with Gregory Uhlmann; the art of playing slow; and so much more. We also talk gear, including the rubber bridge guitars from Old Style Guitar Shop, electrics from Gelber & Sons, and the next big, post-rubber-bridge guitar muting trend (maybe)! Hand Habits - "Something Wrong" from the 2023 album Sugar the Bruise on Fat Possum Sugar the Bruise, the latest LP from Hand Habits — led by LA-based artist Meg Duffy — was inspired by a songwriting class they taught back in August 2021. "It was both inspiring and terrifying," they shared via a press release. "I hesitated to consider myself a Songwriter, despite having released three records, let alone enough to teach others how to do it my way. In preparing for this course I examined my own approach with a close eye (at times too close for comfort). I realized how vital improvisation and collaboration are to me; in life and in songwriting. I was asked to design writing prompts, and although this was not typically how I would write left to my own devices, I found it to be a wonderful way to get the wheels of inspiration turning. I also cherished how special it was to see all of these other musicians, some new, some contemporaries, rising to the occasion and following themselves into the unknown." Playing with Spoon in a Battle of the Bands, driving a U-Haul from Colorado to San Francisco, and cohesiveness. Kacey Johansing “Kacey Johansing's latest album Year Away will be released July 28 via Night Bloom Records. In March of 2020, after learning that a dear friend's life was coming to an end, Johansing sat down and in one sitting wrote the song “Daffodils”. An elegiac tribute to someone facing death with grace and curiosity, the lyrics confront Johansing's own mortality by observing the brief lifespan of a Hlower. Only a week later when the world came to an abrupt standstill, she soon found herself processing this recent loss while trying to make sense of a new global reality. Across the ensuing months, Johansing found herself increasingly untethered by a world of isolation and political upheaval. Having been a frequent touring member of bands like Hand Habits and Fruit Bats, and often being called into the studio to lend her harmonies and multi-instrumental talents to records, Johansing's phone no longer rang. Living in Los Angeles she feared her musical community was vanishing, as friends and collaborators continually announced they were leaving the city. It was in returning to her piano nightly that she found the greatest solace, feverishly writing the songs that would be collected on her next album. Resulting from this new sense of time and focus was a deepening of her songwriting. As Johansing recalls, “I felt like a metamorphosis happened during that time. There was a lot of personal growth and healing.”” Excerpt from https://www.kaceyjohansingmusic.com/about-1 Kacey Johansing: Bandcamp: https://kaceyjohansing.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @kaceyjohansing Website: https://www.kaceyjohansingmusic.com Merch: https://kaceyjohansing.bandcamp.com/merch NightBloom Records: Bandcamp: https://nightbloomrecords.bandcamp.com/artists Instagram: @nightbloomrecords Website: https://www.nightbloomrecords.com Merch: https://www.nightbloomrecords.com/merch The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5Ndle3K... Night Shop - "Let Me Let It Go" from the 2022 album Forever Night on Dangerbird Records. Night Shop is the solo project of Justin Sullivan, who can often be seen hitting the skins as the touring drummer for Kevin Morby, in addition to playing with Waxahatchee, Hand Habits, The Babies, Anna St. Louis, and LA post-punk outfit Flat Worms. This past February, he unveiled Night Shop's debut album Forever Night via Dangerbird Records which saw a lot of these prior collaborators give back to their favorite drummer. Early single and Song of the Day “Let Me Let It Go” features Meg Duffy of Hand Habits on guitar, Jess Williamson, Anna St. Louis and Woods/Purple Mountains' Jarvis Taveniere providing engineering and co-production alongside Sullivan so it truly is a family affair. The rollicking horn-laden track its inspiration from Dante and Beatrice's love and “the concept of courtly love,” according to Sullivan. “A journey to hell, the pursuit of art, the Shangri-Las, and finding peace in what is, not how we think things should be.” The video for the track sees Sullivan fleeing directors Jeff Davenport and Cooper Kenward, sprinting through the streets of LA. “I think we just wanted to offer a sense of escape and abandon that comes with both loving someone and also surrendering our attachment to a certain outcome in regards to that love,” Sullivan explains. “I'm just trying to get at the proper expression of a feeling; in this case, a deep yearning. So I think visually, you want to complement that sense.
