Air tells the story of how Nike landed a sponsorship deal with Michael Jordan before his rookie year in the NBA thanks to the efforts of talent scout Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon) who has to convince CEO Phil Knight (Affleck) that Jordan is a once-in-a-generation talent worth risking everything on: they design a new shoe around him, at a time where the company was known more for its running shoes than for basketball. So why is a hagiographic movie about corporate executives and star athletes making a fortune so much fun, even if you are on the left and understand the dark side of Nike's legacy? It has to do with the current Benaissance: this is a movie made by a happy man that also serves as a mission statement for a new production company founded by Ben and Matt, Artists Equity, aiming to make entertainment that fairly compensates the creative talent, a film that like its superstar subject displays a relaxed confidence. The film's unexpected use of basic semiotic theory and period detail make it crowd-pleasing entertainment that is destined to be a perennial Movie for Dads; comfort viewing that we'll be watching on cable for years. Who knew the formerly Sad Affleck had it in him? Plus: Ben speaking fluent Spanish, and former governor Scott Walker losing his mind as younger voters in Wisconsin reject the GOP! Description: Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez's relationship is the stuff of Hollywood legend. Now that they've revived their love, we're hoping they can overcome the media narrative that doomed them the first time around and stick with each other for the long haul. This week we talk to culture writer Anne Helen Petersen about how social media changes the game for Bennifer, why the paparazzi hated Jennifer Lopez but loved Jennifer Garner, and what's at the root of that Sad Affleck meme.Listen ad free with Wondery+. AKA the drunkest episode yet! This one is not for the faint hearted and goes in some truly chaotic directions; we are joined by the inimitable Lava and parse topics as hair brained as Druid's ancestral past, Sad Affleck and Mick Jagger's mouth. Can YOU the listener stomach our misguided and quite frankly, shameful takes? Find out in this weeks edition of GingerTalks! (Find Lava @lavamonster0331)
Sad Affleck
This episode contains spoilers for both films. Comedy writer Ursula Lawrence (Drunk History, Adam Ruins Everything) joins the show from Madison, Wisconsin to discuss the last few years of the career of Ben Affleck. Affleck has had quite the decade: after two big hits as a director with The Town and the Academy Award for Best Picture winning Argo, he announced he would be starring as Batman in a series of new DC films. From this point his personal life seemed to go into a tailspin: his marriage ended, the paparazzi covered his every vape break or DoorDash delivery, and he wound up going to rehab twice. Ursula and I discuss two recent Affleck vehicles, both directed by Gavin O'Connor: 2016's strange, overstuffed thriller The Accountant, and 2020's understated alcoholism drama The Way Back. Follow Ursula Lawrence on Twitter. A review of The Accountant from the perspective of Tom Iland, an autistic person who is also a Certified Public Accountant! “The Accountant is another example of Hollywood's autism problem” by James Luxford, for Little White Lies, November 2016
Well would you look at this morose *expletive deleted* right here. Smells like someone *expletive deleted* in your cereal. It's important to remember just how well-received "Chasing Amy" was back in 1997. Writer/director Kevin Smith followed his breakthrough debut "Clerks" with the then-ignored "Mallrats." Smith scaled back for a relationship drama about Holden McNeil (Ben Affleck), a goober of a young man who falls in love with a lesbian. But then the girl, Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams) dates him anyway and... yeah, we all know this premise doesn't sound too great in 2021. Despite its outdated vocabulary about the spectrum of sexuality, "Chasing Amy" does reach for some universal ideas about romantic love and how past relationships can influence current ones. Old Millennials hosts Tyler and Angela dive into their own history with "Chasing Amy" and how the movie works for those years (and years) removed from the awkwardness of dating life and new relationships. They also dissect the roller coaster ride of Ben Affleck's acting choices here (he hadn't quite honed his SAD AFFLECK mode yet), and whether or not Joey Lauren Adams ever had a chance delivering Smith's overwrought speeches. Say what you will about Ol' Silent Bob though, the man knows how to write hilarious dick and fart jokes. The Old Millennials also celebrate Jason Lee's complicated performance as Holden's roommate Banky, explore the "Jaws" scene, and spend a lot of time talking about those two BIG scenes, including the triumphant (and talky) return of Jay and Silent Bob. Oh, and Tyler loses focus and talks about "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" like it's the secret topic of this episode. It isn't. Also discussed on this episode: Judas and Black Messiah (2021) I Care a Lot (2021) Motherless Brooklyn (2019) The Great Dictator (1940) Funny Girl (1968) The Accused (1988) The Fresh Prince of Bel Air Reunion Special Raised by Wolves (TV series) Game of Thrones Fate: The Winx Saga (TV series) Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019)

Sad Affleck. Mad Affleck. Ice cold, chilly Affleck. Affleck in a cowboy hat (again). Affleck Butt. Santa Affleck. In "Reindeer Games," Ben Affleck is many things, and it's all totally baffling. You'd be forgiven for forgetting all about "Reindeer Games," the Christmas-set thriller that released in theaters in February (!) 2000. It's directed by a legendary filmmaker, John Frankenheimer, at the tail-end of his life, written by a guy who would go on to write several "Transformers" movies, and co-starring a guy who replaced Vin Diesel early in the production so Diesel could go make the first "Fast and the Furious." So, you know, "Reindeer Games," didn't exactly work out. But... BUT! "Reindeer Games" is also one of the twistiest and most ridiculous movies of its generation, featuring Gary Sinise as a sleazy, greasy-haired gun runner who refers to Affleck's character solely as "convict." Charlize Theron plays an OG Catfish (sorta) who falls in love with Affleck's prison cell mate. That guy gets shivved, so Affleck takes over his identity because... well, it's Charlize f'in Theron. Yes, Affleck, playing a guy named Rudy impersonating a guy named Nick (get it? GET IT?) is a pretty big sleazeball, but don't worry. Everybody in this movie are bigger sleazeballs, making "Reindeer Games" the feel-good Christmas movie of 2000! Reindeer Games podcast In this Old Millennials Remember (Christmas) Movies podcast episode, Tyler and Angela discuss the baffling title ("Don't play no reindeer games with me, convict!"), try to explain all the ridiculous hoops the bad guys must go through just to execute a poorly-planned casino heist and talk about the emotional resonance of a single Affleck tear rolling down Affleck cheek. Also, Angela defines a "director's cut" in her own words on an impromptu game of America's fastest growing podcast segment, "Angela Explains It All."
Everyone knows that January is the time when people make a list of their sexual goals for the upcoming year. And as much as our listeners would like to think otherwise (in fact they probably don't want to think about this AT ALL when it comes to the hosts of this podcast) we're no different. The problem with us is that we take our cues from watching way too many movies and for this week's episode that could be trouble as this may be the origin of sad Ben Affleck. CHASING AMY has plenty of bad decisions made by not so bright dudes so we avoid that mistake by inviting on a very bright movie lover and an actual fan of us (okay maybe not so bright) in Sheila. If you were a victim of the now infamous viral “rickroll” gag, you may not have even known it would mark your place in a broader viral movement that transcended languages and actually led to the revival of Rick Astley’s career. In the latest Copy This podcast, host Kirby Ferguson points back to this and other peak viral moments when examining the popularity of Drake’s song “In My Feelings.” The song was a summer hit and rose to the top of the charts thanks, in large part, to the help of a viral dance craze by Instagram comedian Shiggy. The song and hashtag #dotheshiggy demonstrate the role the internet has played in changing the way fans participate in culture today, sometimes serving as co-authors of popular works. Through a close look at “In My Feelings” and its rise in the charts, a conversation with music business executive, cultural critic, and media professor Casey Rae, and a fun review of other viral sensations (remember “Sad Affleck”?), this latest podcast will help you better understand how fans and artists are all benefitting from these cultural events with the help of our nation’s carefully balanced copyright laws.

Another week, another Superman movie. Last week, we dissected Man of Steel in anticipation for this week's release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Directed by Zack Snyder, starring Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman. Since its release, there has been a really negative reaction from critics, but Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan aren't afraid to go against the grain if it warrants it. Did Zack Snyder make a movie for the fans? Or is that just a convenient way for critical response to be ignored? Can we declare Sad Affleck as the best meme of 2016, yet? First we open with the bummer of Togetherness Season 2 being cancelled, but after that point, its Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice-related news and what came out this week on Blu-ray. That includes Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight and Criterion's Blu-ray release of Bicycle Thieves. Then listen to a really long discussion about Batman v Superman and what we thought about the blockbuster. Next week we will be reviewing Midnight Special (I'm sure Everybody Wants Some!! will be talked about as well). You can find more written content at www.bagogames.com.
