As the Film Buffs continue their deep dive into Kevin Smith's cinematic world, they recall the first time they watched Chasing Amy in 1997. The screening took place in a packed auditorium at Rutgers University in Philadelphia, an unforgettable night where they may have seen a rare, uncut version of the film—one that has yet to be released or made available beyond that special evening.
Hey Kids we're taking a time machine back to the 90's where every film had so many slurs and straight white men were the only folks allowed to tell queer stories. This is an extra special treat, we were given an opportunity to speak with filmmaker Sav Rodgers about his experience making the incredible documentary Chasing Chasing Amy, analyzing his relationship with the film, and the film's relationship with culture. We discuss how difficult it is to put yourself out there in a documentary, awkward interviews, and the musicals Sav would love to adapt to screen. This was a wonderful interview and you should give it a listen. Buy Chasing Chasing Amy! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It was such a pleasure to reunite with WHAT LIES WEST writer-director Jessica Ellis for this thoughtful, breezy, good-hearted celebration of three films about women's sexuality onscreen. Diving into two very different, boldly inquisitive bright lights of '90s cinema in CHASING AMY & ANTONIA'S LINE, which bookend this conversation, we also explore 2024's lovely, compassionate, surprisingly bittersweet, highly recommended indie MY OLD ASS, which feels like a throwback to the coming-of-age indie films made in that same era.Originally Posted on Patreon (4/21/25) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/127082687Shop Watch With Jen logo Merchandise in Logo Designer Kate Gabrielle's Threadless ShopDonate to the Pod via Ko-fi Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive
Kris has been writing and is stuck in a wild limbo where the days to her next book's deadline get smaller as the story keeps growing. Tara suggests a new trend to solve Kris's problem, before our hosts wade bravely into the epilogue debate. They're deep, dangerous waters, but they have the nerve to say their piece. And to top it off, Tara bores the class by gushing about her upcoming triple-paned windows. You know, real adulting stuff. Official Recommendations From Kris: Chasing Chasing Amy (2023) Kris's official recommendation this week is the documentary, Chasing Chasing Amy. It tracks director Sav Rodgers' experience with the 1997 film Chasing Amy and how important that movie was to his queer identity growing up, including that it saved his life. Filmed over five years, Chasing Chasing Amy details Sav's exploration of the cult hit and his changing opinions of it when new information comes to light. From Tara: Sweet Home Alabarden Park by TJ O'Shea Tara's official recommendation this week is the newly released sapphic romance Sweet Home Alabarden Park by TJ O'Shea. It's a "sort of one night to forever set in the UK," which features recently cheated on and divorced Fiona and the soft butch gentlewoman Alice, who ends up being nobility. Tara loved this book and it's already her best book of the year. We discuss a variety of films, from classics like 'Chasing Amy' and 'High Fidelity' to modern takes like '500 Days of Summer' and 'Birds of Prey.' KEVIN SMITH FILMOGRAPHY MARATHONOur friend Kevo takes a step in a new direction - one towards a more mature film... a Spike Lee film (in Rhys' opinion). When two comic book artists meet a girl, one of them falls for her but the man's hopes are crushed when he finds that she is a lesbian.Kane and Rhys jump on this third entry to the View-Askew-niverse and debate over whether its the best direction for Kevin to take his subject matter a little more seriously, or if it comes across as too pretentious for anyone's good. A.C. and Kat are joined by director Sav Rodgers to discuss his documentary feature debut, Chasing Chasing Amy, and the complicated legacy of its subject matter, Kevin Smith's 1997 film Chasing Amy. Sav shares about the arduous process of becoming the central story in his own doc, and examining his relationship to the movie that saved his life as a young queer person. We explore how we take our various fandoms seriously, and what it means to blend loving a piece of media with making that love the focus of our work and/or our identities.Discussed in this episode:Sav's film CHASING CHASING AMY, which is also available on KanopyChasing Amyaction figuresFind Sav:bsky.app/profile/savrodgers.bsky.socialletterboxd.com/savrodgersFind Kat:letterboxd.com/katexmachinabsky.app/profile/katexmachina.bsky.socialtwitter.com/kat_ex_machinaFind AC:letterboxd.com/aclambertyinstagram.com/aclambertyFind Us:Support us on PatreonOur WebsiteSubscribe to FFR on Apple PodcastsTwitterInstagramLetterboxdNEW: bsky.app/profile/femfreq.bsky.social
We start with CHASING CHASING AMY (1:44), trans filmmaker Sav Rodgers' documentary about his relationship with Kevin Smith's CHASING AMY, and an exploration of Rodgers' reverence for Kevin Smith's at-the-time groundbreaking but now much-more-questioned-about-its-narrative-ideas lesbian-falls-for-a-straight-man rom-com. Over the course of six years, Rodgers' feelings change as he transitions, and interviews Smith, queer filmmakers and critics, academics, his own fiancée Riley (whom we all love), and Joey Lauren Adams, CHASING AMY's star, who has *very* different feelings about it than writer-director Smith. It's a fascinating watch. Next, there's CONCLAVE (25:31), director Edward Berger's film about a papal conclave, run by Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes), choosing a new pontiff, and the political and religious machinations that go along with it. Dave had resisted seeing this, but finally relented. And…did he like it the way Evan and Megan do? Finally, there's NICKEL BOYS (45:41), director and co-writer RaMell Ross' adaptation of Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. We have differing opinions about it, in particular the style in which it's filmed, but we all found things we like about it, Megan in particular. Over on Patreon, we talk about Clint Eastwood's final film (we're told) as director, the courtroom drama JUROR NO. 2.
My guest this week is director Sav Rodgers, whose new film is Chasing Chasing Amy. It began as an exploration of the origin of the infamous ‘90s rom-com, but in the process of making the documentary, interviewing folks, and digging deeper into the movie's message, Sav uncovered some surprising truths about himself — ones that he was reluctant to include in the documentary, but eventually realized … he had to.Here's a link to the online premiere of Chasing Chasing Amy on December 15, 2024, with a special introduction by Kevin Smith and a Q&A with Sav & Riley Rodgers: https://watch.eventive.org/chasingchasingamy/play/6747ce291f64c511e374f759We'll have that conversation in a minute. First a quick reminder — this month we'll be hitting the 500th episode of The Sewers of Paris! And to celebrate, I'm doing a special Q&A episode, answering questions from listeners. So if you have anything you'd like to ask — about the podcast, about pop culture and queer history, or just for recommendations — please send it along to at matt@mattbaume.com.

As you might know by now, early last year, Andrea and Jodie Bergen County started a podcast called The Watchers, where they watch and review movies and tv (often but not always about New Jersey). This week, they interviewed Sav Rodgers, a filmmaker whose documentary Chasing Chasing Amy caught their attention earlier this year. The title alone should tell you why we've decided to release that episode here on New Jersey Is the World.Chasing Chasing Amy is a heartfelt, funny, and deeply personal documentary that explores identity, queer representation, cinematic influence, and our evolving relationship with pop culture. In this episode of The Watchers, Sav Rodgers shares how the film started as a quest to understand Chasing Amy's complicated connection to the LGBTQ+ community but grew into something much more meaningful. They dig into the behind-the-scenes process, from shooting interviews in people's homes and on windy rooftops to how key editing choices helped shape the narrative, all guided by Sav's strict “No Bullsh*t” policy. Along the way, they discuss Kevin Smith's magnetic presence, the impact of queer narratives, and the importance of authentic storytelling.Keep up with Sav Rodgers and Chasing Chasing Amy on Instagram. Here's where you can see Chasing Chasing Amy in theaters: It's really very goodWatch Sav's TedTalk - Sav Rodgers: The Rom-Com That Saved My Life Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Two very different directors talk about two very different films on this episode of the Movies In Focus podcast. First-up, Kevin Smith talks about his 1980s set comedy, The 4:30 Movie and then later in the episode Euros Lyn discusses his vampire-comedy, The Radleys. Kevin Smith was one of the leading figures in the 1990s independent film scene. His self-financed low-budget comedy Clerks was a massive success and he went on to make the likes of Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl and others. Working with rep company that includes the likes of Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Jason Mewes and Matt Damon, Smith's films have also had a strong autobiographical bent, incorporating moments and characters from his own life and adding his own style of acerbic wit. His latest film, The 4:30 Movie is his most autobiographical yet- a 1980s set coming of age story that not only takes place within the confines of Smith's home state of New Jersey - but also his very own SmodCastle cinema. It's a witty and heartfelt film that delivers the goods for fans of his work and those looking for a well-honed comedy. Kevin Smith talks about digging into his past to make the film, shooting in your own cinema - as well as the possibility of a Mallrats sequel. To say that Welsh director Euros Lyn has had an illustrious career would be an understatement. His career as a director is littered with some of the television's top shows including - Casualty, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Sherlock, Broadchurch, Happy Valley, Daredevil, His Dark Materials and Heartstopper. Lyn's new film, The Radleys is based on Matt Haig's book of the same name - and it stars Damian Lewis and Kelly Macdonald as a married couple with a young family - and they all just happen to be vampires. Euros Lyn's chat about The Radleys covers bringing the material to the screen and getting such a great cast for his vampire film.

Chasing Amy is near and dear to my heart. Laserdiscs! Remember those things? Govier is pumped for his dated, but healthy new collection of LD's. Jeremy Irons appreciation is strong on this show in case you didn't know. Luke defends the acting of Campbell Scott who is the son of the legendary figure George C. Scott. Get ready for laughs when George lights up a heater in an old interview. Luke may have beef with Cameron Crowe & Citizen Dildo. Somehow Dave Pirner gets in the mix because he was in Reality Bites, but really his composition for Chasing Amy's title credits is what really stands out when Pirner comes to mind. Steve finally gets to talk about the non-fiction book called Among The Bros. There is no way you will be bored or zone out when you hear this story. It's funny, terrifying & absurd all at once. Also get ready to not be shocked when Steve reads off the names of well known people who come from a fraternity background known for its racist tendencies across multiple generations. We got your emails! Joe writes us for the first time in a bit & he's got a brief email about the Telegram app & the possible scumbag Pavel Durov who owns it. Mark Zuckerberg through the United States government recently, but neither of these parties can be trusted. Govier recalls the 1995 classic film Full Body Massage starring Mimi Rogers & Cocktail's Bryan Brown. There is a classic scene involving Bryan Brown asking Mimi's character,"Is this how Doug does it?". It was constantly repeated by the entire crew of this show for many years starting back in 2004. Check it out if you've never seen it! Our most dedicated podcast lover Mr. Pink emails the show! Pink has an undying passion for Luke's sexy vocal prowess. Cinema 9 Podcast host & indie horror director Eric Branstrom emails the show about his latest Sopranos rewatch & has questions about personal experiences with mob ties. Luke makes it clear he does not want to be near a dead body. Would you rat your friends to avoid jail time? Luke & Steve learn about a shared family history related to the OSS formed by the United States government back during World War II. Govier still cannot find that damn clip from Full Body Massage. This week's episode is a little different; we spent a whole day in the Atlantic Highlands watching as many Kevin Smith movies as our old bones could handle. The annual event, Vulgarthon, was held at Kevin's movie theater, Smodcastle Cinemas, and featured screenings of every movie in the View Askewniverse, including Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. We break down the experience, with a surprise guest appearance that made Andrea cry, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and an undeniably nostalgic look at 30 years of Kevin Smith's career. It was an endurance test, a deep dive, and above all else, a love fest to New Jersey and the cinematic world Smith created to celebrate it.In a few weeks, we're going to be watching Jane Schoenbrun's I Saw the TV Glow. To prepare for that, we're going to take a look back at some of the 90s shows that inspired it. She published an essay in The New Yorker in April of 2019, and has expanded on that essay in a memoir which was published by Random House in Summer of 2023. On today's episode of the Artalogue, we look at the art of writing and film as art forms with one of Madison's favourite contemporary writers, Guinevere Turner. In this episode, we discuss Turner's groundbreaking first feature length film Go Fish as it turns 30 years old, other notable screenplays like American Psycho, and get candid about working as an out gay woman in Hollywood.Madison and Guinevere Turner also discuss the enduring appeal of American Psycho, its satirical take on toxic masculinity, and Christian Bale's unforgettable performance. We dive into the film's past and present reception , the misconceptions about its message and the fans it has garnered over the years. Plus, discover the little-known secrets behind the iconic business card scene that still captivates fans today. Guinevere sheds valuable advice on writing everything from screenplays to memoirs and discusses her process, both collaborative and solitary. We discuss Turner's phenomenal new memoir, When the World Didn't End, which details her childhood growing up in a cult and how she wrote it. Guinevere reflects on her early days of diary writing within the Lyman family cult and how those formative experiences shaped her into the artist she is today. Guinevere sheds light on the less glamourous side of the film industry, from the complexities of collaborative writing to the near constant battle for funding. She shares personal insights into the cathartic power of storytelling. Guinevere also offers a heartfelt reflection on her various career milestones, from acting in Preaching to the Perverted to her work on The L Word and Charlie Says. This episode is a celebration of creativity, resilience, and the joy of reading and writing. Connect with us:Madison Beale, HostCroocial, ProductionBe a guest on The Artalogue Podcast

Today's episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Here's Part 2 of our conversation with Guinevere Turner whose memoir When the World Didn't End is drawn from fastidiously kept childhood diaries written while she was raised in a cult. If you haven't listened to Part 1, back up and listen. In Part 2, Turner shares what it was like to return to “normal” life, how her story became a thriller, and what's helpful, not-so-helpful, and just plain weird about life post-cult. Please note, this series includes details of underage sexual abuse. Listener discretion is strongly advised. Today's episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Guinevere Turner recently published a memoir about being raised in a cult, being kicked out, and finding her way in the world. Her book When the World Didn't End dives deep into her experience drawn from fastidiously kept diaries. Here on A Little Bit Culty Turner shares some off-the-cuff stories. We chat about writing craft. And Turner brings up questions about our collective obsession with the cultiverse. Please note, this series includes details of underage sexual abuse. So, okay; here's the deal: we talked SO much when we recorded Nicole's farewell episode that we ended up cutting almost half an hour from the version that we released last week (classic #workwives!). We ultimately decided that this particular twenty-four minute chunk didn't serve the true purpose of that ep - which was celebrating Nicole, our partnership, and the version of the pod that is "Coming Out with Lauren & Nicole" - but we also felt that the tangential discussion we'd had was important enough to release on its own as this bonus mini-episode. Plus, Nicole wouldn't be Nicole if she didn't leave without a dash of CONTROVERSY! Please enjoy the following completely unedited, *heated* conversation, and remember: it's okay if we disagree! The Out Magazine article we discuss (that we keep mistakenly referring to as an "interview;" oops!) can be found here: https://www.out.com/gay-news/jasmin-savoy-brown-lesbian.
