At the start of the 2010s, you'd be hard-pressed to find a college radio station or dorm-room playlist that didn't include a Phantogram hit.Sixteen years after the release of their debut record, band leaders Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel, who started Phantogram in a town of just a few thousand people, are touring behind their latest full-length, 2024's Memory of a Day. The tour included a sold-out stop at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium—a different sort of barn than the kind they used to perform in back in Greenwich—where PG's John Bohlinger caught up with Carter and Barthel. Courtesy of some help from their tech, the duo showed us how they're pulling off their theatrical live experience.Shop Phantogram's Gear: Neural DSP Quad Cortex - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/5gmox9Ernie Ball Music Man Cutlass - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/YRnd3KSeymour Duncan single-coil-sized humbucker - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/yqbrQBCustom Fender bass - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/vPj2qWFender Jazzmaster - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/OeK13KFender Bassman - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/XYB1rGErnie Ball Paradigm Strings - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/AWL1B1Full Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/phantogramSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear: https://bit.ly/GiveawaysPGDon't Miss a Rundown: http://bit.ly/RIgRundownENLMerch & Magazines: https://shop.premierguitar.comPG's Facebook: https://facebook.com/premierguitarPG's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/premierguitar/PG's Twitter: https://twitter.com/premierguitarPG's Threads: https://threads.net/@premierguitarPG's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@premierguitar0:00 - XPND Pedal Power Battery Kit0:15 - Phantogram Josh Carter Playing Intro0:32 - John Bohlinger Intro0:43 - Josh Carter's Ernie Ball Music Man Cutlass Guitars4:44 - Josh Carter's Move From Pedals to Neural DSP Quad Cortex9:25 - Josh Carter's "Run Run Blood" Tones13:14 - Josh Carter's "Black Out Days" Tones16:00 - Controlling & Choreographing Quad Cortex17:58 - Pedals Used on Memory of a Day Album18:55 - Josh Carter's Amps Modeled in Quad Cortex20:30 - XPND Adjustable Daisy Chain21:01 - Phantogram's History22:53 - Sarah Barthel Intro23:04 - Sarah Barthel's Fender Mustang Bass24:07 - Sarah Barthel Adding Bass Guitar to Phantogram25:23 - Sarah Barthel's Synth Bass Sounds26:25 - Sarah Barthel's "Feedback" Tones28:04 - Sarah Barthel on Using a Pick with Bass While Singing28:32 - Sarah Barthel's "Attaway" Tones29:54 - Sarah Barthel's Fender Jazzmaster31:08 - Sarah Barthel's "Happy Again" Tones32:18 - Sarah Barthel Reconnecting with Josh Carter to Form Phantogram34:10 - Creating the Phantogram Show Aesthetic35:44 - Early Phantogram DIY Shows37:36 - XPND Isolator[Brought to you by XPND - Pedal Power Battery Kit: https://ddar.io/power-rr / XPND - Adjustable Daisy Chain: https://ddar.io/daisychain-rr / XPND - Isolator: https://ddar.io/isolator-rr]© Copyright Gearhead Communications LLC, 2025

In this episode we talk with Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, otherwise known as Phantogram. Phantogram released its 5th studio album, the fantastic Memory of a Day, in October 2024 and recently wrapped up a tour as the opener for Kings of Leon. Memory of a Day is a kaleidoscope of sounds, textures and moods, all rooted in excellent songwriting and Sarah and Josh's ability to embed memorable hooks into layers of buzzing, distorted, cinematic sounds. There's a lot of variety but the songs carry the same Phantogram fingerprints that go back to the 2010 debut album, Eyelid Movies, released on the indie label Barsuk Records.  Links: Phantogram home page Phantogram tour dates Jay Gilbert @ Label Logic Glenn Peoples @ Billboard Learn more about your ad choices. Send us a textThe last time I interviewed Josh Carter of Phantogram was in 2010, before this site was even a podcast. It was one of the first interviews I ever did, and Carter mentioned the author Breece D'J Pancake. The name stood out, of course, but it took a while for me to read about Pancake's tragic backstory. Then more songwriters started mentioning him in interviews, so I finally read his book, and wow. Incredible. This time, Carter and Sarah Barthel join me on the podcast to talk about their decidedly old-school writing process. We talk about Barthel's collection of analog typewriters, Carter's use of his Dictaphone, and how we just need more time to be bored. Yes, we sound like three cranky old people railing against the impact tech has on creativity. But I'll take that any day as long as Phantogram continues to make such good music. Phantogram's latest album Memory of a Day is out now.

I have shared many times that everything we go through, someone else has as well. There is so much beauty in your own journey but it starts with speaking positively and also reminding yourself that this season will be missed one day. Sarah has lived such an amazing life, from knowing there was more out there, taking chances and moving across the country on her own not once but twice now, and taking the world on by storm on her own. She remains positive every single day, romanticizes her singlehood as a 30 year old gal, and continues to stay grounded in the human being she is. SO if you're out there thinking your “clock is running out” or you're scared to take on a new journey as a single woman, listen to this episode. Together with Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Shuman over Zoom video!GRAMMY-nominated musician and multi-instrumentalist Michael Shuman is GLU. The frontman of Mini Mansions and member of Queens of the Stone Age is showing another side of himself with his independent debut EP, MY DEMONS out February 24th. Today's title track release features Phantogram's Sarah Barthel and explores how childhood traumas continue to seep into adult life. Emotional explosions emerge in a realm of lo-fi hip-hop with upbeat, poppy moments while the coinciding video turns heads with a steamy, latex-laden Barthel symbolizing the demons that dominate GLU's thoughts as he raps satirically through a leather ball gag. GLU's genesis was rooted in honesty, creativity, and the desire not just to exist but to exist deeply, and with no major concentration of genre aside from melding them, he unravels ribbons of rhyme and musicianship that are introspective and engaging.Self-produced and mastered by Dale Becker (Doja Cat, Chris Brown, Khalid), the MY DEMONS EP as a whole is a look into the late nights, solitude, and the existential crisis that come with surviving alone through a pandemic. Taking influence from Depeche Mode, Gorillaz, Twenty One Pilots, Mac Miller, the back and forth of the artist's soft soundscapes lead way to catchy lyrics touching on relatable subjects of struggle, loss, addiction and trauma. Previous single “Night Shift,” highlights the impending doom we feel, generated by the current state of our world.“For me, ‘MY DEMONS' was about being on my own terms; having my own momentum,” said Shuman. “This is something that is different because I do come from punk rock, but I'm doing this… so it's not going to sound like your typical DJ or Hip-Hop producer. I want it to feel fresh, and that's the most exciting thing for me.”MY DEMONS Track Listing:MY DEMONS ft. Phantogram's Sarah Barthel on Coping with Traumatic Loss

Going There with Dr. Mike

Musician Sarah Barthel of Phantogram joins Dr. Mike Friedman on the Going There podcast to share her struggle with devastating and traumatic loss in her life. The Phantogram singer has been a fantastic mental health advocate over the years, and has been very forthcoming and outspoken about how she not only lost her sister, Becky, when she committed suicide, but also had previously lost her father to cancer, and coped with her mother and other friends having the disease. What the “You Don't Get High Anymore” artist describes is years of different devastating losses one on top of another and how this repetitive loss can be traumatic to us. Such loss can be overwhelmingly horrible, not only because we lost people close to us, but also because it undermines our fundamental belief that we live in a safe and predictable world. And our sense that we are safe and that we have some level of control over our lives is critical to our own mental health and well-being. One of the things that Barthel talks about is how in the face of this loss, she tries to be a “superhero” who needs to be the one who says everything is ok, and tries to make it so. The problem is that often when we try to be strong for others, we inadvertently close off our own emotional processing, avoiding or suppressing the intense feelings that come from facing the suffering of others, or our own suffering. Barthel explains how she turned to music as a way of understanding, processing, and expressing her feelings in the face of devastating and traumatic situations. So let's go there with Phantogram's Sarah Barthel by listening to the full episode above.
