Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted sits down for an in-depth conversation about his battle with throat cancer and his triumphant return to music. He discusses the Chophouse Band tour, including headline shows and dates supporting Blackberry Smoke, culminating in two nights at the historic Ryman Auditorium. Jason opens up about why he plays guitar and sings in The Chophouse Band rather than bass, his painting career, and offers candid reflections on Metallica's legacy including the Black Album and the controversial bass mix on 'And Justice for All.' He also touches on the unrealized Van Halen tribute project and emphasizes the importance of cancer screening and early detection. After that, Phil Collins sits down with Eddie Trunk to talk about his long-overdue induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist. Phil opens up about how the recognition caught him completely off guard, despite selling over 100 million albums both solo and with Genesis. He takes listeners back to the creation of his landmark album Face Value, revealing how personal struggles and an empty house led to some of his most iconic work. Phil shares the fascinating origin story of 'In the Air Tonight,' from its improvised lyrics to that legendary drum break, and discusses how his solo success actually helped Genesis break through in America. Looking for daily inspiration?  Get a quote from the top leaders in the industry in your inbox every morning.   Paul Couch is the Creative Producer of PTC Stages. Over the course of a decades-long career in entertainment, Paul built a remarkable path through theme parks, concert venues, theater management, and higher education. Beginning as a singer inspired by live performance, he worked at parks including Kings Island, Opryland USA, and Dollywood while also helping lead entertainment operations at the historic Ryman Auditorium. Along the way, he produced concerts, managed festivals, developed theatrical productions, and later became an Assistant Professor at Middle Tennessee State University. In this interview, Paul talks about theme park career stories, entertainment as the human experience, and working with Dolly. Theme park career stories “Working at King's Island that summer was the best job of my life.” Paul shares a fascinating career journey that began with a desire to become a professional singer after being inspired by a live Neil Diamond album as a teenager. That passion eventually led him into the theme park industry when he was hired to perform at Kings Island, where he unexpectedly found himself immersed in country music and theme park entertainment. That experience introduced him to a larger world of live entertainment production and sparked his interest in building a career beyond performing alone. From there, Paul worked his way through Nashville's entertainment scene, balancing music industry jobs with carpentry work before deciding to pursue live show production full time. Networking played a critical role in helping him transition into management at Opryland, where he developed a reputation for getting things done and eventually became deeply involved in concerts, Halloween festivals, and large-scale entertainment operations. His career later expanded to the Ryman Auditorium, where he helped guide concerts and theatrical productions during a transformative period for downtown Nashville before ultimately joining Dollywood's entertainment leadership team. Entertainment as the human experience “Entertainment has a big footprint, not just as a business, but as part of the human experience.” Paul offers a thoughtful perspective on why entertainment matters so deeply within theme parks and beyond. He explains that gathering together for shared experiences is fundamentally part of being human, pointing to the ancient Greek Theater of Dionysus as evidence that people have always sought communal entertainment experiences. For Paul, theme parks are not simply offering rides and attractions. They are creating opportunities for emotional connection and collective experiences that guests actively crave. He also discusses the evolving role of technology in entertainment and how guest expectations continue to rise. Modern audiences expect sophisticated lighting, sound, video, and production value, and parks that successfully balance those advancements with manageable operating costs will be positioned well for the future. Paul believes entertainment remains essential because it fulfills something deeply rooted in human nature, which is why live concerts, productions, and immersive experiences continue to grow in popularity across the industry. Working with Dolly “She is the person that you hope she is.” When discussing his experience working with Dolly Parton, Paul describes her as authentic, professional, and deeply collaborative. He explains that while working with someone of Dolly's stature was initially intimidating, their relationship evolved over time into a friendship built on trust and mutual respect. He credits her with maintaining incredibly high standards for the entertainment experiences connected to her name while also remaining approachable and generous in the creative process. Paul also shares insight into their collaboration on Dolly Parton's Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol, a musical that premiered in Boston before touring internationally and across the United States. He emphasizes that Dolly values equal collaboration and genuinely wants to hear ideas from her creative partners. That openness, combined with her professionalism and kindness, helped create an environment where everyone involved could feel proud of the final product and invested in the work they created together.   Paul can be reached on LinkedIn, as well as by email at ptcstages@gmail.com. Randy Wood is an American master luthier, instrument builder, and music entrepreneur known for his influence on the modern vintage-instrument industry and the bluegrass and roots music community. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Wood has built and repaired instruments for many of the biggest names in country, rock, and bluegrass while also operating one of the South's most respected acoustic music venues.Randy Wood grew up in a musical and woodworking family. His father was a carpenter and woodworker, and music was a common part of family life, with relatives frequently playing and singing together. Those two influences—woodworking and music—would shape Wood's lifelong career as a luthier. By the 1960s, Wood had begun developing his craft of instrument repair and building, quickly gaining a reputation for meticulous work and a deep understanding of acoustic instruments. In the early 1970s, Wood moved to Nashville and became a founding partner in GTR, Inc., a pioneering vintage instrument shop located behind the Ryman Auditorium. The business was started with fellow musicians and dealers Tut Taylor and George Gruhn, and it later evolved into the famous Gruhn Guitars. Because of its proximity to the Grand Ole Opry and Nashville recording studios, the shop quickly became a gathering place for musicians needing repairs, vintage instruments, or simply a place to pick. During this period, Wood built and repaired instruments for legendary performers including Bill Monroe, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Chet Atkins, Eric Clapton, and Keith Richards. Wood later partnered with Taylor to open the original Old Time Pickin' Parlor, a combination music store, repair shop, and performance space that became a hub for bluegrass musicians and fans in the early 1970s. In 1979, Wood sold the Nashville business and returned to coastal Georgia. For many years he operated a small workshop and mail-order business while building custom instruments. Over time he produced more than 1,500 handmade instruments, including guitars, mandolins, banjos, dobroes, and violins, many of which are used by professional musicians around the world. In 1999, Wood established Randy Wood Guitars, a guitar shop, repair center, and instrument workshop near Savannah. He also built a small concert venue called Randy's Old-Time Pickin' Parlor, an intimate hall known for hosting world-class acoustic performers in bluegrass, country, and Americana music. The venue has become a regional destination for roots music fans and regularly features nationally recognized artists in an intimate setting.Randy Wood is widely regarded as a pioneer of the modern vintage instrument business and one of the most respected repairmen and builders in acoustic music. His influence extends beyond instrument making; through his shops and the Pickin' Parlor, he helped create gathering places where musicians could meet, jam, and share traditions that shaped American roots music. Hank Williams defined the genre we now call country with a guitar in one hand and a bottle of booze in the other. In between stints in the local drunk tank, he cultivated a knack for blue-collar blues that would spread far beyond the backwoods South Hank called home. His self-proclaimed “hillbilly music” logged him more than 30 hit songs and membership at the Grand Ole Opry, fulfilling Hank's lifelong dream. But his frequent bouts with the bottle would ultimately strip him of that membership, sending him from the Ryman Auditorium to the sanatorium – and ultimately, an early grave. Episode #342: Daniel Donato became one of Nashville's more revered electric guitar players during his three years playing four nights a week at Robert's Western World on Lower Broadway. When he lost that gig in 2015, he had to start from scratch as a working musician and songwriting artist. In his second appearance on The String, Donato talks about landing some touring band gigs that sustained him while he developed his Cosmic Country concept. The band and his repute grew, and ten years after leaving Broadway, he headlined the Ryman Auditorium. Also on the table here, his two recent albums, Reflector and Horizons.

On the heels of two Grammy-winning albums in succession, with her band Golden Highway—2022's Crooked Tree and 2023's City of Gold—plus a nomination for Best New Artist, Molly Tuttle returns with a solo album that's her most dazzling to date: So Long Little Miss Sunshine. Recorded in Nashville with producer Jay Joyce (Orville Peck, Miranda Lambert, Lainey Wilson, Eric Church, Cage the Elephant), the fifth full album from the California-born, Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and virtuoso guitarist features twelve new songs—eleven originals and one highly unexpected cover of Icona Pop and Charli xcx's “I Love It.”   Tuttle's career, which began at age fifteen, has charted a course between honoring bluegrass and stretching its boundaries. On this album—a hybrid of pop, country, rock, and flat-picking, plus one murder ballad—she goes to a whole new place. Her stunning guitar work is more up-front on this album than ever before. (One of the most decorated female guitarist alive, Tuttle was the first woman to win the prestigious International Bluegrass Music Award's Guitar Player of the Year in 2017, at age twenty-four, and won again the following year, with nominations nearly every year since; she has also won Americana Music Association's Instrumentalist of the Year award.) So Long Little Miss Sunshine also features Tuttle playing banjo, something she's never done on one of her albums before.    The album was recorded with a group of musicians that includes drummer/percussionists Jay Bellerose and Fred Eltringham, bassist Byron House, and Joyce on multiple instruments. Ketch Secor (Old Crow Medicine Show) also plays banjo, fiddle, and harmonica, as well as singing harmony.  Tuttle also conceived the artwork for So Long Little Miss Sunshine, which features multiple Mollys, each wearing a different wig except for one with nothing on her head at all. (“I probably own as many wigs as I own guitars,” she says.) Tuttle has been bald since she was three years old due to the autoimmune condition alopecia areata; she acts as a spokesperson for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation.   One album track, “Old Me (New Wig),” is “about leaving all these things behind that don't serve you anymore,” she says. “Parts of yourself that really aren't in your best interest, like low self-esteem, anxieties, and not feeling confident. Learning to own these different aspects of my personality but not letting them control me is another theme of the record that inspired the album title and the cover art. Those are all things I've struggled with through the years—just feeling like an impostor, like I wasn't good enough. I like singing this song because there are days when I still have to tell myself to leave that stuff behind.'”   Most of the So Long Little Miss Sunshine songs were co-written with Secor, who is also Tuttle's partner. “We spend so much time together, we live together, and anytime I have a song idea, or he has one, it's just so easy to transition from whatever we're doing into writing a song.”  Earlier this year, Tuttle played guitar and sang on Ringo Starr's new country album, Look Up. She also played with him and a host of other stellar musical guests at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium and Grand Ole Opry as part of his televised Ringo & Friends shows. She was inspired by his fearlessness in following his passion for country music. “It is cool to see someone like that who has done everything you could imagine doing in a music career and he's still just so psyched and still has a list of things that he wants to accomplish,” Tuttle says. Looking back on her own career, “It has never been a cookie-cutter thing where I'm just going down a straight road. I always had this crooked path.”

We explore the paradoxical nature of Christian surrender – how giving up control leads not to loss but to gaining something far greater. When we surrender our lives, we receive them back "richer, fuller." When we yield our "flickering torch," we gain access to God's "sunshine blaze." Even in our deepest pain, we can "trace the rainbow through the rain."What are you holding that needs to be laid down? Where have you been trying to maintain control? Hank Williams: Sanatoriums, Poison Pills, and Fired from the Grand Ole Opry

Today is the official birthday of That Sounds Fun. Ten years ago today, the first episode released. Yes, of course we've been celebrating all year, but I couldn't let the actual day of the start come and go without pausing and giving thanks, for you and with you.  This podcast also opened the door for my first ever show at the Ryman Auditorium- truly a dream come true. Over 2,000 of you were in the room with us, but that's just a fraction of the friends listening today. So I thought it would be fun to grab our old pal Eddie for a few minutes, who was an integral part of the night, and recap it for you here. . . . . .
