Queens Of The Stone Age had made a massive breakthrough with their album Songs For the Deaf utilising musicians such as Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) and Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees) but by the time they were gearing up for their fourth album it was almost like they had fallen apart, with Josh even contemplating splitting up the band. In this episode we discuss the issues of Nick Oliveri's departure from the band, finding replacement members, which song was recorded in one take, and which song was was used on every single DVD made in the South East Asia region. Tune in for this episode of Retro Reviews as we focus on the 20th anniversary of Lullabies To Paralyze. #QOTSA #queensofthestoneage #joshhomme #livelistenerased #retroreview

SABATTA is the musical project of London based alternative -psychedelic rock artist guitarist and songwriter Yinka Oyewole . He released his debut album "Middle of The Night" in 2015 in which the album's lead single "Politician" garnered national play on BBC 6 Music, setting the band off touring nationally. SABATTA recently released his latest album called "How to Get Even" via Blackfriars Entertainment. Raised in Essex and is of Nigerian lineage, he crafts a raw and individual sound with spiky guitar and an inimitable voice, like a mix of Hendrix, QOTSA and early RedHot Chili Peppers, strained through the sieve of South London. London alternative-psychedelic rock artist Sabatta has released his new single 'Get Over Yourself', the second taste of his new album 'How To Get Even' (out on November 17 via Blackfriars Entertainment) with a video that introduces the unique guitar - The Pick! Aka AfroGuitar! ‘Get Over Yourself' deals with ‘build em up, break em down' celebrity culture via a barrage of grimy riffs, pumping bass and pounding drums. This relentless rocker is anchored by a heavy and hypnotic chorus, which backs the vocal mantra of the track's title! Also included is a shredfest solo, as ferocious as a social media comment section! Beware, no one is safe, as the saying goes ‘the internet is undefeated!' Revolving around guitarist and songwriter Yinka Oyewole, who was raised in Essex and is of Nigerian lineage, Sabatta crafts a raw and individual sound with spiky guitar and an inimitable voice, like a mix of Hendrix, QOTSA and early Red Hot Chili Peppers strained through the sieve of South London. And it's no wonder with musical influences ranging from Curtis Mayfield, Prince, Tupac and Hendrix to Bad Brains, Thin Lizzy, Parliament / Funkadelic and Black Sabbath. "Inspiration for ‘Get Over Yourself' came from the current thirst for fallen idols. It's like a modern day version of human sacrifice, but lives have been replaced by reputations and the Gods are the insatiable beasts of social media opinion. Beware, no one is safe, as the saying goes ‘the internet is undefeated!" says Yinka Oyewole. #NewMusic #Interview #SocialMedia
Originally recorded on 8/19, we had to shift some things around to try to hit a release date for a review. This didn't quite work out for reasons that will become evident in the next episode (125), but we are here now.And it's a shame, because we never had a chance to talk about the (very excellent) QOTSA show:Also, Samantha Fox, a Gwar Ted Talk, Johnny Football, and some twin PP drama. Join us for a very special episode with 2 of our favorite guests, as well as 2 of Atlanta's greatest drummers: Rob Hammersmith (Skid Row) and Kent Aberle (Blackberry Smoke). We talk about all things that go bang, boom, thump, and crash! Poor Robert must suffer while 3 drummers in one room chat about the greatest of all time and the brightest of the unsung heroes of the rock n' punk n' metal drumming community. We get some awesome stories from the road as these 2 are always touring the world with Skid Row and Blackberry Smoke. You don't want to miss this one! Plus, drummer jokes by Bakko from Cobras & Fire! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss all 3 with 2 of our favorite drummers in the world that both hosts have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with in the past. Due to an unfortunate off-air rant, Nick is on Administrative Leave this week (details discussed briefly in the episode). He was, however, permitted the opportunity to send in a remote Tales From The Concert. He and his brother Alex were nearly front row at the Queens of the Stone Age concert at the The Anthem on August 14th. They report back on the experience & venue, including the opening acts The Armed & Phantogram. In addition to learning his lesson, Nick (and Alex) had an amazing time at the show and he'll be back with us next week.Songs: Queens of the Stone Age - “My God Is the Sun“Queens of the Stone Age - “Go With the Flow“Greg catches us up on he and Jackson's experience at the new Super Mario World at Universal Studios in Los Angeles (spoiler, it's amazing!). He then brings us the first remembrance of the evening as Sixto Rodriguez (known as Rodriguez) passed earlier this month at the age of 81. Rodriguez released two albums in 1970 & 1971 that met with little fanfare in the U.S. In 1976 he quit music and lived for the next 40 years in a derelict house in Detroit. While he wasn't a massive success in the US, his music was incredibly successful in South Africa and Australia. His story was told in the 2012 documentary “Searching for Sugar Man” and he had a resurgence in fame in later years. It's an amazing story of an amazing musician, one that will be missed.Songs: Rodriguez - “Climb Up on My Music”Rodriguez - Live in South AfricaBlack Pumas - “Sugar Man”Jay brings us the second remembrance of the show as we also lost the beloved Robbie Robertson this past week. He was the lead guitarist for The Band and co-wrote most of the songs with Bob Dylan & he collaborated with Martin Scorsese on many film scores. He's often seen as a peripheral 70's rock star, but Jay tells us why his contributions should be considered as important as many of the big name rockers that he came up alongside. His music helped define the Americana genre and his projects with musicians and film makers established him as a consummate collaborator. Rest in Power Robbie Robertson.Songs: The Band - “Chest Fever”The Band - “Look Out Cleveland”Robbie Robertson - “Fallen Angel”

With a little guidance from Loudwire's Dumbest Best Metal Band Names listicle, we decided to take the offramp into the offbeat and investigate the most off-kilter, ODDBALL metal bands with the most outlandish names and over the top aesthetics ever to bless metal. Whether it's the band's look, their theme, or the simple hilarity of “what's in a name” (including, but not limited to: band name, album name, and/or song name), there's certainly some incredibly wonderful, warped weirdness which dwells along the wild & wacky fringes near the outskirts of mainstream metal. Get ready to discover the shared sensibilities of ladies and bowling balls and find out who should definitely NOT go swimming during Shark Week (especially if they are “experiencing their own personal shark week”). It's time to get yourself a “vacation rental” and get ready to “put on your Magnum P.I. shirt” and pick up some crabcakes from that “hole in the wall” place further down the beach and JOIN US as we rundown Loudwire's Dumbest Best Metal Band Names listicle and explore some of the most glorious ODDBALL WEIRDNESS in all of metal. On this episode of Tuna On Toast, Stryker interviews Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age. The band has a new album out called ‘In Times New Roman' and Josh tells Stryker all about how it came together. The guys discuss inspiration for some of the songs, including “Paper Machete” and "What the Peephole Say." Josh has had a difficult few years but he explains to Stryker why he's able to see a light at the end of the tunnel, and even reveals that he laughs when life gets especially tough. Queens of the Stone Age are out on tour and Josh details how he puts the band's setlist together every night. He also explains why he still loves playing “No One Knows” and why QOTSA will never be a band that refuses to play their hits. Josh Homme also reveals some of his favorite movies – including a Ryan Gosling flick and some rom-coms. He also explains why he's never heard a Taylor Swift song. Subscribe to Tuna On Toast with Stryker, leave us a review, give us a follow on social media, and thank you – as always – for supporting the show!
This week we're discussing the latest album by Queens of the Stone Age, In Times New Roman… We've talked about Josh Homme on this show before (see our Kyuss and Them Crooked Vultures episodes), and much of how we feel about him hasn't changed in terms of how he makes records. This album isn't a huge jump in any direction, mostly just more of the same. But none of it is bad and if you're a die hard fan, this record will scratch that itch.Closing track: “Sicily”In Times New Roman… on Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/album/2ZTDmH94OLjeNaOvT7Ngwk?si=69924c481bfd4d9bPatreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexHistory Tom's stuff:New album on BandcampDebut album on Bandcamp, Spotify, AppleSubstackWebsite
QOTSA, aka QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, began back in the late “Nineteen Hundreds” in Seattle, Washington following the breakup of Josh Homme's former band, desert metal legends Kyuss. With a wide array of sonic textures, layers, and sound design sorcery ingrained within their music, as with Kyuss, QOTSA is another prime example of a band whose albums should be listened to and enjoyed via headphones (and if we're being honest, since “this show is about honesty”, a healthy infusion of relaxers will help to further enhance this experience). It's time to realize which nationality's coitus “sounds delicious” and understand that the pain of regret from a disappointing high gravity brew rivals the pain of regret that comes from copping a squat “on your balls”. Prepare to bear witness to one of the greatest alcohol “collabs” ever imagined and discover the powerful allure of food truck fare when you JOIN US as we get outside the desert and go inside the metal with none other than QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE. Our guest this episode is Marc Emer-Hutner, guitarist/singer of the band Sugartooth and guitarist for The Pleasure Club. Sugartooth hit the road hard to tour in support of their 2 major label releases in the 90s before going on hiatus. Soon after Marc was playing guitar in The Pleasure Club, a band that is highly celebrated by other bands and musicians but never reached the grand audience that they were worthy of. Marc and Sugartooth have regathered and recorded a new album, Vol. 3, which released April 21, 2023 and is full of groove-heavy rock with catchy melodies. Recommended if you like QOTSA, Clutch, Fu Manchu, etc. I had a great time hanging with Marc and getting some of his life story and I hope you enjoy. Please do go check out his body of work from over the years and absolutely listen to Vol. 3! If you're enjoying Couch Riffs Podcast please support us on Patreon. Together with Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Shuman over Zoom video!GRAMMY-nominated musician and multi-instrumentalist Michael Shuman is GLU. The frontman of Mini Mansions and member of Queens of the Stone Age is showing another side of himself with his independent debut EP, MY DEMONS out February 24th. Today's title track release features Phantogram's Sarah Barthel and explores how childhood traumas continue to seep into adult life. Emotional explosions emerge in a realm of lo-fi hip-hop with upbeat, poppy moments while the coinciding video turns heads with a steamy, latex-laden Barthel symbolizing the demons that dominate GLU's thoughts as he raps satirically through a leather ball gag. GLU's genesis was rooted in honesty, creativity, and the desire not just to exist but to exist deeply, and with no major concentration of genre aside from melding them, he unravels ribbons of rhyme and musicianship that are introspective and engaging.Self-produced and mastered by Dale Becker (Doja Cat, Chris Brown, Khalid), the MY DEMONS EP as a whole is a look into the late nights, solitude, and the existential crisis that come with surviving alone through a pandemic. Taking influence from Depeche Mode, Gorillaz, Twenty One Pilots, Mac Miller, the back and forth of the artist's soft soundscapes lead way to catchy lyrics touching on relatable subjects of struggle, loss, addiction and trauma. Previous single “Night Shift,” highlights the impending doom we feel, generated by the current state of our world.“For me, ‘MY DEMONS' was about being on my own terms; having my own momentum,” said Shuman. “This is something that is different because I do come from punk rock, but I'm doing this… so it's not going to sound like your typical DJ or Hip-Hop producer. I want it to feel fresh, and that's the most exciting thing for me.”MY DEMONS Track Listing:MY DEMONS ft.
