On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Sarah Barthel of Phantogram. Phantogram's fifth studio album, Memory of a Day, hinges on nostalgia, compiled with the idea that certain sounds can send you back in time while simultaneously employing the kind of crisp production and hard-hitting beats that makes them sound from the future. Since its release last year, the electronic-rock duo have stayed busy, appearing on Jimmy Kimmel, touring with Open Mike Eagle, and preparing to hit the road again in August. In a conversation with Madden, Barthel reveals how she uses art to express emotion, the band's dedication to creating a unique sound, and their upcoming summer tour with Deftones. On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Josh Carter of Phantogram. Since their formation in the late 2000s, Phantogram have always created the music that they wanted to hear, drawing from Outkast as freely as My Bloody Valentine. Their fifth studio album, 2024's Memory of a Day, is no different, offering up dusky psychedelia, floor-filling beats, and a potent chemistry between two longtime friends while contemplating the nature of time. In a conversation with Madden, Carter opens up about how trying too hard can be the death of the art, his special relationship with his bandmate, Sarah Barthel, and their upcoming summer tour with Deftones. At the start of the 2010s, you'd be hard-pressed to find a college radio station or dorm-room playlist that didn't include a Phantogram hit.Sixteen years after the release of their debut record, band leaders Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel, who started Phantogram in a town of just a few thousand people, are touring behind their latest full-length, 2024's Memory of a Day. The tour included a sold-out stop at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium—a different sort of barn than the kind they used to perform in back in Greenwich—where PG's John Bohlinger caught up with Carter and Barthel. In this episode we talk with Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, otherwise known as Phantogram. Phantogram released its 5th studio album, the fantastic Memory of a Day, in October 2024 and recently wrapped up a tour as the opener for Kings of Leon. Memory of a Day is a kaleidoscope of sounds, textures and moods, all rooted in excellent songwriting and Sarah and Josh's ability to embed memorable hooks into layers of buzzing, distorted, cinematic sounds. There's a lot of variety but the songs carry the same Phantogram fingerprints that go back to the 2010 debut album, Eyelid Movies, released on the indie label Barsuk Records.  Links: Phantogram home page Phantogram tour dates Jay Gilbert @ Label Logic Glenn Peoples @ Billboard Learn more about your ad choices. Fellow music lovers, you are in for a treat, because for this episode we are diving head-first into a full-on rock concert of epic proportions. Join us for the 13th annual SMooCH benefit show at The Showbox in Seattle, where our community, this year alone, has raised over $2.2 million dollars for Uncompensated Care at Seattle Children's Hospital. We've mentioned SMooCH before on the Nordy Pod way back in episode 3 with Megan Jasper, and again in episode 29 with Dr. Jeff Sperring, but we've never actually taken you to the show itself. If you're new to the Nordy Pod; SMooCH, which stands for Seattle Musicians for Children's Hospital, is an event that was started by Pete Nordstrom and his wife, Brandy, in 2012 after their own experience needing the care of Seattle Children's Hospital. In this episode you'll learn more about the Uncompensated Care program from return Nordy Pod guest, CEO of Seattle Children's Hospital, Dr. Jeff Sperring, you'll hear from one of the many patient families that have been directly impacted by the support of the Uncompensated Care fund, and you'll hear from Megan Jasper, CEO of Sub-Pop Records, who talks about what it takes to pull together a mind-blowing rock concert like SMooCH. On top of all that you'll get to hear from a few of the incredible musicians that agreed to come play the event this year. Since the very first show SMooCH has consistently managed to bring iconic artists to the Showbox, like Macklemore, Modest Mouse, Ben Gibbard, Iron and Wine, The New Pornographers, The Head and the Heart, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Phantogram, and so many more. This year's event is no different. Prepare yourself for this all-star lineup featuring Doug Martsch from Built to Spill, Sebadoh, Duff McKagen, of Guns n' Roses and Velvet Revolver, and the headliner, Nude Dragons, which are the reunited members from Soundgarden. We're very grateful to all of the musicians who showed up to donate their time and talents, we're grateful for those who helped organize the event, and we're super proud of our community that has donated to date over $30 million dollars to the Uncompensated Care fund. Thanks for tuning in to episode 77. We hope you enjoy it! Did you know that YOU can be on The Nordy Pod? This show isn't just a one-way conversation. We want to hear about what Nordstrom looks like through your eyes. Share your Nordstrom experience, good or bad, by giving us a call and leaving a voicemail at: 206.594.0526, or send an email to nordypodcast@nordstrom.com to be a part of the conversation! And, be sure to follow us on Instagram @thenordypod to stay up to date on new episodes, announcements and more.

Send us a textThe last time I interviewed Josh Carter of Phantogram was in 2010, before this site was even a podcast. It was one of the first interviews I ever did, and Carter mentioned the author Breece D'J Pancake. The name stood out, of course, but it took a while for me to read about Pancake's tragic backstory. Then more songwriters started mentioning him in interviews, so I finally read his book, and wow. Incredible. This time, Carter and Sarah Barthel join me on the podcast to talk about their decidedly old-school writing process. We talk about Barthel's collection of analog typewriters, Carter's use of his Dictaphone, and how we just need more time to be bored. Yes, we sound like three cranky old people railing against the impact tech has on creativity. But I'll take that any day as long as Phantogram continues to make such good music. Phantogram's latest album Memory of a Day is out now.

Welcome to the episode 33 of "Women In The Music Industry", a podcast that shines a spotlight on the remarkable women who are breaking barriers and making their mark in an industry that has long been dominated by men. My guest today is none other than singer, songwriter, and one half of the multiple award-winning Vancouver-based alternative rock band “DEAR ROUGE”, Danielle McTaggart! For over 10 years now Dear Rouge, the alternative rock duo of Drew and Danielle McTaggart, have been winning fans over consistently and hitting new career heights. Following their major label debut record, Black To Gold, the couple picked up multiple Top 10 radio hits, a SOCAN Songwriting Prize, and a Juno for Breakthrough Group of the Year. Dear Rouge continued their upward trajectory with their sophomore album PHASES (Deluxe) which included the lead single Boys & Blondes and the #1 Alternative Rock hit, Live Through The Night. Along the way, they opened for artists like Phantogram, Lights, and Our Lady Peace, and wowed crowds on festival stages from coast to coast with their energetic and dynamic live performances. The band continued to solidify their presence in the Canadian music landscape with their third full length record Spirit. The record spawned the #1 hit Fake Fame, and the band picked up an Indie Award for Group of the Year at Canadian Music Week, before a packed summer of touring that included opening for Vance Joy and a tour supporting Canadian legends Metric. All the tracks from Spirit, along with the band's previous singles have seen heavy recurrent radio airplay, leading to Dear Rouge being the most played Canadian band on alternative radio in 2022. The band then returned to the studio with acclaimed producer Gus van Go (The Beaches, The Stills). The duo's new single Goon is out now. Due to an unfortunate off-air rant, Nick is on Administrative Leave this week (details discussed briefly in the episode). He was, however, permitted the opportunity to send in a remote Tales From The Concert. He and his brother Alex were nearly front row at the Queens of the Stone Age concert at the The Anthem on August 14th. They report back on the experience & venue, including the opening acts The Armed & Phantogram. In addition to learning his lesson, Nick (and Alex) had an amazing time at the show and he'll be back with us next week.Songs: Queens of the Stone Age - “My God Is the Sun“Queens of the Stone Age - “Go With the Flow“Greg catches us up on he and Jackson's experience at the new Super Mario World at Universal Studios in Los Angeles (spoiler, it's amazing!). He then brings us the first remembrance of the evening as Sixto Rodriguez (known as Rodriguez) passed earlier this month at the age of 81. Rodriguez released two albums in 1970 & 1971 that met with little fanfare in the U.S. In 1976 he quit music and lived for the next 40 years in a derelict house in Detroit. While he wasn't a massive success in the US, his music was incredibly successful in South Africa and Australia. His story was told in the 2012 documentary “Searching for Sugar Man” and he had a resurgence in fame in later years. It's an amazing story of an amazing musician, one that will be missed.Songs: Rodriguez - “Climb Up on My Music”Rodriguez - Live in South AfricaBlack Pumas - “Sugar Man”Jay brings us the second remembrance of the show as we also lost the beloved Robbie Robertson this past week. He was the lead guitarist for The Band and co-wrote most of the songs with Bob Dylan & he collaborated with Martin Scorsese on many film scores. He's often seen as a peripheral 70's rock star, but Jay tells us why his contributions should be considered as important as many of the big name rockers that he came up alongside. His music helped define the Americana genre and his projects with musicians and film makers established him as a consummate collaborator. Rest in Power Robbie Robertson.Songs: The Band - “Chest Fever”The Band - “Look Out Cleveland”Robbie Robertson - “Fallen Angel”

We had the pleasure of interviewing Mereki over Zoom video!Australian/English savant of purposeful pop Mereki releases her debut solo album Death of a Cloud. Created over seven years and three continents, in collaboration with a roster of the artists Mereki trusted most to bring this deeply personal and intuitively conceived material to life, the album is a look into the joy and difficulty of self-realization and finding the universe within, expressing this journey through music – Stream. The album release comes along with the news of Mereki signing with BMG. Proving her success as an independent artist, her progress will be furthered through the creative efforts of BMG along with her own label BunBun Records.Leading up to her album release, Mereki put out the singles “Presence” and “Twin Flame.” The creation of “Presence” stemmed from Mereki getting inspired by the guitars reverberating through the walls while in a writing room above the studio where Dhani Harrison and Graham Coxon of Blur were recording. After she began singing a melody that became the first verse, she shared it with Harrison, and then the two were motivated to work together to complete Mereki's composition. “Twin Flame” sentimentally arrived the same week as Valentine's Day as a hymn to kindred spirits. Her singles were met with praise from the likes of Notion, Beats Per Minute, Soundazed and Mundane Mag, as well as editorial support from Spotify's infamous Lorem playlist, making the artist's return her strongest streaming to date.At the end of 2022, Mereki and her Be Kind charity partnered with the Happy Baby Community for a Presents for Presence holiday fundraiser. The campaign helped raise money, awareness, and much needed supplies for asylum-seeking new mothers and their babies. Happy Baby Community provides a holistic approach to healing which includes long term support for both mothers and children.ABOUT MEREKI:Indie Australian/English artist Mereki creates pop with a purpose – vibrant musical worlds that share messages of transcendence and healing without sacrificing the fun. Now based in the UK, she first moved from her native Australia to the USA where she quickly found a home in the spiritually minded creative community of the east side of Los Angeles, collaborating with an impressive collection of producers, writers, and musicians as she refined her song writing and voice, laying the foundations for what was to come.Mereki began writing and releasing music with esteemed writers & producers Dan Nigro (Olivia Rodrigo, Conan Gray, Caroline Polachek) and Justin Raisen (Charli XCX, Sky Ferreira). GRAMMY-nominated superstar producer Ariel Rechtshaid (HAIM, Vampire Weekend, Madonna, Adele) spotted her talent, prompting their collaboration, “Golden Boy”, recorded by fellow Australian icon Kylie Minogue. She scored writing credits with Phantogram and Atrak, and guest artist and co-writer credit on tracks with Dhani Harrison, Goldroom, Basenji, Flight Facilities and Holychild. While fronting Goldroom, she performed everywhere from middle America to NYC to Bogotá, Colombia, before going on to perform with electronic act Flight Facilities as their featured vocalist on the duo's sold out North American tour.Kindness and magic are at the backbone of everything Mereki aims to be and be around in her music and in her life. She finds expression for her message in many creative outlets. In addition to music, she is also working on a record label, a children's book, a book of poetry and a collection of portrait photography. In 2016, Mereki created Mereki's Clubhouse, a pop-up event platform with a focus on kindness and creating spaces to give a voice to up-and-coming female artists. The Clubhouse motto “Be Kind” grew into a non-profit organization of the same name.Through all her work with and for others, Mereki found time to create her own music. Her debut solo single, “Blue Lake”, was released to critical acclaim from the likes of Spin, Nylon and Flood Magazine. After enduring some personal tragedy and heartbreak, she found catharsis in a brief foray into high-energy punk rock, releasing a few singles that landed her music in a Victoria's Secret commercial. In 2017, Mereki returned to the essence of who she truly is with the release of the Beach EP. The songs on Beach have Mereki's signature style, a distinctly pop-feel with positive messaging, while tracks like “Spiritual”, “French Kissing” and “Got It All” also hold an ethereal, dreamy quality.Mereki's return to music marks what has already been an extraordinary year for her, including her UK live debut at the legendary Glastonbury Festival 2022, alongside appearances at a host of UK festivals and headlining shows in London. We want to hear from you! Together with Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Shuman over Zoom video!GRAMMY-nominated musician and multi-instrumentalist Michael Shuman is GLU. The frontman of Mini Mansions and member of Queens of the Stone Age is showing another side of himself with his independent debut EP, MY DEMONS out February 24th. Today's title track release features Phantogram's Sarah Barthel and explores how childhood traumas continue to seep into adult life. Emotional explosions emerge in a realm of lo-fi hip-hop with upbeat, poppy moments while the coinciding video turns heads with a steamy, latex-laden Barthel symbolizing the demons that dominate GLU's thoughts as he raps satirically through a leather ball gag. GLU's genesis was rooted in honesty, creativity, and the desire not just to exist but to exist deeply, and with no major concentration of genre aside from melding them, he unravels ribbons of rhyme and musicianship that are introspective and engaging.Self-produced and mastered by Dale Becker (Doja Cat, Chris Brown, Khalid), the MY DEMONS EP as a whole is a look into the late nights, solitude, and the existential crisis that come with surviving alone through a pandemic. Taking influence from Depeche Mode, Gorillaz, Twenty One Pilots, Mac Miller, the back and forth of the artist's soft soundscapes lead way to catchy lyrics touching on relatable subjects of struggle, loss, addiction and trauma. Previous single “Night Shift,” highlights the impending doom we feel, generated by the current state of our world.“For me, ‘MY DEMONS' was about being on my own terms; having my own momentum,” said Shuman. “This is something that is different because I do come from punk rock, but I'm doing this… so it's not going to sound like your typical DJ or Hip-Hop producer. I want it to feel fresh, and that's the most exciting thing for me.”MY DEMONS Track Listing:MY DEMONS ft. Trained classically and culturally in a plethora of movement techniques and philosophies, Toogie is a pioneer in the hybridization of contemporary, modern, and urban methods. She aims to inspire others to create with compassion, transparency, and gratitude.
