Host Christina Shenvi is joined by 3 experts from Sharp Memorial Hospital who provide insight into how this program operates to provide the highest level of care for older patients. Diane Wintz, MD, a trauma surgeon who was heavily involved in creating the Generational Health Program. Her goal was to change how traditional health care models approach elderly patients presenting to the ED. Kelly Wright, RN, trained as an oncology nurse and now serves as manager of the program, and Stacy Nilsen, PhD RN, who's focus is on the feasibility, implementation, education and data assessment of the program. Together they discuss the creation and expansion of the program and highlight the most important aspects of what makes it a success.
Recent advancements in treatment and a multimodal approach to care are improving outcomes for patients with head and neck cancer, however access to therapies and unique patient challenges due to disease symptoms, difficulty eating, difficulty communicating, and other psychosocial factors can reduce patient quality of life. In this episode, CANCER BUZZ speaks with Angelea Bruce, RD, CSO, OPN-CG, registered dietician and head and neck program navigator at Sharp Memorial Hospital and Brittney Watts, RN, head and neck patient care coordinator at Yale New Haven Hospital, about the importance of head and neck nurse navigation and how a dedicated navigator can help address these unique patient needs and improve care for patients with head and neck cancer. “I think looking at it through the eyes of the physicians, the health insurance, the organization [cancer program], and looking at what are the patient outcomes, success rates, delays in care, survivorship...I think those are important metrics to monitor and we [as head and neck patient navigators] can let a program know whether the patient's needs are being met.” –Angelea Bruce, RD, CSO, OPN-CG “Having a specific nurse coordinator for the head and neck community is vital to the patient's journey within the entire process. This is the point person for the patient, for the providers, and you are the connection for the patient to the healthcare facility.” –Brittney Watts, RN Guests Angelea Bruce, RD, CSO, OPN-CG Registered Dietician, Head & Neck Program Navigator Sharp Memorial Hospital San Diego, California Brittney Watts, RN Head & Neck Cancer Patient Care Coordinator Yale New Haven Hospital New Haven, Connecticut This episode, developed in connection with the ACCC education program Multidisciplinary Approaches to Head and Neck Cancer Care, was made possible with support by EMD Serono. Have you ever pondered whether all the work over ECPR was worth it? Even if you did save a few patients, does this really make sense from a societal standpoint? Am I giving up my life on a project where my efforts could be better elsewhere? Then this episode is for you (and me). This month I talk with Melissa Barnes and Ryan Coute about the economics of cardiac arrest and specifically ECPR. Ryan has just published a great paper in Resuscitation on the costs on OHCA. We will talk with Ryan and Melissa Barnes, ECMO manager at Sharp Memorial Hospital about benefits and costs to society of OHCA and ECMO. I learned several pearls from Ryan's paper as well as a paper by Grosse that Ryan references. Below are the links to both papers with a couple graphs to try to wrap your head around.

Octogenarian Pat Anderson, 89, retired from her lifelong career as a textile studio craftsman - spinning, knitting, sewing and weaving. Leaving her daughter in charge of the studio, she embarked on an unusual retirement project: creating and providing hand-knit prosthetics for mastectomy breast cancer survivors. As a lifelong textile studio craftsman, Pat was well versed in the legal, professional, and ethical challenges this project presented. Once everything was in place she filed a copyright. We could see the excitement in her when she proclaimed, “To date, 1500 pairs have been lovingly gifted, from one survivor to another.” 60% of all recipients offer to join the project as co-sponsors with donations. Each pair of Busters that goes out is paid for. At the end of the year there is a surplus which Pat generously donates to the Breast Cancer Support Program at Sharp Memorial Hospital in California. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Women Over 70 has committed to donating 20% of all contributions we receive to the Busters Project during the month of October. Contributions are the only form of funding for this important project. “We are blessed to know that we are really creating something that has a positive impact on someone else's life.” Connect with Pat:Email: spinshuttlestudio@gmail.com

A singer, songwriter and guitarist, David Ponder knows the importance of a strong, steady beat. But this was ridiculous. “My heart now, it's so strong,” said Ponder, 60, a Poway resident who in August 2016 underwent a successful heart transplant at Sharp Memorial Hospital. “The first night home, it was beating so hard it woke me up.” This Christmas, David Ponder is dazzled by the gifts he's received from strangers: a life-sustaining organ and a life-enhancing relationship. He's alive because a car wreck killed a man he'd never met, Coronado's Juan Carlos Lopez, 26. When surgeons removed Lopez's heart and transplanted it in Ponder's chest, two families were stitched together in sorrow and joy. Months after the surgery, Ponder visited Lopez's mother. The bond was instant.
Life after death—right here on earth—is now a reality for a growing number of patients who were once technically declared dead. As a world-renowned expert in resuscitation science and an Emergency Room physician at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, Dr. Zack Shinar is a hands-on practitioner of ECMO, or Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, a life support procedure that involves pumping one’s blood outside the body. Zack walks us through his first encounters cheating death with ECMO and how it has become a regular work day for him to do so. Find out how he’s influencing the worldwide medical community and creating unique educational experiences to expand the impact of resuscitation science from his podcast ED ECMO to an annual conference he co-founded called Reanimate. We discuss future skills like interdisciplinary curiosity, statistical literacy, and effective decision-making for both doctors and patients. Hear how attending one of Zack’s Reanimate Conferences gave one man the skills to bring his own son back to life. Are you ready for this rumble in the urban jungle?? Chris Ho vs Joe Bellezzo in the no holds barred debate about whether ECMO CPR is a step too far? The next cage match from SMACC Chicago. Chris and Joe are the director and vice-director respectively, of Emergency Medicine at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, California. They are two of the leading experts in ECPR, with Joe being one of the key players behind EDECMO. On a day-to-day basis, they are friends and colleagues, working together in one of the very few centers around the world to deliver ECPR. However in this Cage Match, friends become foe and there are no limitations to how far each will go to prove their side of the debate. On the AFFIRMATIVE side, Chris Ho delivers a convincing argument for why ECPR IS a step too far. From lack of evidence to the cost of “re-animating the dead” and everything in between, Chris Ho delivers a practical approach to the argument and demonstrates without a doubt why we are not ready for this to be the next step in resuscitation. On the NEGATIVE side, Joe Bellezzo delivers an outstanding rebuttal to “Dr Ho’s Nutty Brown Bullshit”. In an inspiring argument filled with anecdotes and occasional facts, Joe Bellezzo makes it impossible to think the ECPR shouldn’t be the next step in our ALS algorithm. Despite strong arguments from either side, as in all debates, there must be a winner. Do you agree with the outcome? If you want to find out whether Chris and Joe were able to kiss and make up, check out the exclusive ICN interview with the two, where they discuss more on ECPR.
In this episode Joe talks with Suzanne Chillcott, the Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) Lead RN at Sharp Memorial Hospital to discuss the nuts and bolts of establishing a "nurse-run" ECLS program. The post EDECMO Episode 12 – The Nurse-Based ECMO Program at Sharp Memorial Hospital with Suzanne Chillcott RN, BSN appeared first on ED ECMO.
Joe Bellezzo, MD along with his partner-in-crime, Zack Shinar, MD have started an ED ECMO service at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego. I am so jealous! In this episode of the podcast, I get to talk to Joe about how it works.
