We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.

Blended families are not a new concept and has been around since Biblical times. Families are all different and there's not one size fits all, and even though you may be ready to move on from your previous life, it's worth taking the time to blend our families well for the sake of children. Although slowing down may seem hard, it will have lasting results for your children over time. In this episode Sandy has 10 tips for blending two families well, and how we can help the children transition into a new stage of life. My author interview with memoir writer Kevin O'Connor in the Writers on Their Writing Process series was very fascinating as we discussed his memoir that began as 700 letters written from family members. Kevin is an accomplished storyteller and genealogist dedicated to preserving family histories through writing and picture collections. His extensive career in education, spanning nearly five decades, included roles as a teacher, principal, professor, and curriculum coordinator in various states. Kevin is also active in community theater and the SMART Ride, a charity bicycling event. He lives in Ft. Lauderdale with his husband, Leon, and their blended family of five sons and seven granddaughters. Today, we'll discuss his memoir, "Two Floors Above Grief," exploring lessons from his upbringing in a funeral home, balancing family life with business, and organizing ancestral letters. Searching your ancestors is popular these days. It can be exciting if your ancestors were famous or if they had some connection to a historical event. However, it can be painful if your family played a part in one of the darker periods in our history, such as slavery. We talk to a man whose family held slaves and hear how he went back in history and to his family's hometown to confront his past, to meet the relatives of those slaves, and to find out what life was like then and now for the two Tomlinson families. What sinner can find peace-- Isaiah 56-9-57-21 prepares us for the first serial reading in public worship on the Lord's Day. In these twenty-five verses of Holy Scripture, the Holy Spirit teaches us that the only sinners who find peace are those whom the Lord heals and brings from the family of idolatry into His own family.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, our guest is Lisa Voelker, author of the recently released, award winning novel, “The Spoon: The Story of Two Families' Survival of the Hungarian Revolution”. “The Spoon” is based on stories told to Lisa by people whose lives were hugely impacted by the events surrounding the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, which lasted only twelve days before it was crushed by Soviet tanks and troops, resulting in thousands of deaths and hundreds of thousands of people being exiled from their homeland. Lisa's love of history was nurtured early in her life by her mother and she has always enjoyed researching and telling stories, particularly ones that relate to people who have overcome great odds or have endured significant difficulties. “The Spoon” is one of those stories. Odyssey Oakengrove - Grand Marshal nominee -- Kevin O'Connor, LGBTQ author --Mr. Prime Choice James MartinezWe speak with Odyssey Oakengrove. Odyssey Oakengrove grew up in Houston and quickly moved back after their boyfriend broke off the relationships, saying that Odyssey was “too involved in the gay community, the trans community, and Black Lives Matter.” Not having recognized their transness, they simply said, “I am the gay community” and packed their stuff to move back home. Once here, they found a home with Black Lives Matter activists, learning advocacy and unlearning their colonized mindset. They realized they were genderqueer at an ACLU abortion access seminar, not simply a “really strong ally.” They have volunteered time with Clinic Access Support Network, Black Lives Matter: Houston, and Showing Up for Racial Justice. They have spoken with state reps at the 2021 and 2023 Texas Legislative Session, fighting for queer students, public education, and against oppressive immigration policies. Odyssey is a candidate for grand marshal for the Pride Houston 365 parade. Then, we speak with Kevin O'Connor, author of “Two Floors Above Grief: A Memoir of Two Families in the Unique Place We Called Home”. Kevin O'Connor enjoys chronicling the stories of families and friends through tracing genealogical histories and writing. He is an expert at organizing family letters and artifacts. He sings and performs in theaters and is active with SMART Ride, a bicycling group that rides annually from Miami to Key West, raising funds for HIV awareness, treatment, and education. Kevin was an elementary teacher, principal, professor, and curriculum coordinator in California, Illinois, and Florida from 1973 to 2020. He authored content and provided training in areas including support for substitute teachers, LGBTQ advocacy, and Sexual Health/Family Life. Kevin resides in Ft. Lauderdale with his husband, Leon. Their family includes five sons and seven granddaughters. Finally, we speak with James Martinez, Mr. Prime Choice 2024. Mr. Prime Choice is open to any male identified individual 40 or older living in the state of Texas. James is founder of Texas Men of Leather. We talk about what being Mr. Prime Choice is like.Queer Voices airs in Houston Texas on 90.1FM KPFT and is heard as a podcast here. Meet the Carter's and the Mohamed's, two very different families whose lives are entwined by fate.
Today's episode answers a question from an individual who is a parent and has their own healthy family, but in many ways is having to still parent their family of origin which has been dysfunctional. When this is a role that we have played for a long time, it is very confusing, and often we are saddled with guilt at making our present family our priority. Setting boundaries does not mean we are abandoning our family of origin. When we don't set boundaries, we might be enabling our family of origin, so that they never truly grow up.

When life throws a curveball, impacting your wife's health, how does one navigate the storm during a time when doctors didn't know how to help? Grab your headphones and prepare to dive deep into one of my most vulnerable and personal conversations on this podcasting journey. Our next guest, Kip Stallcop, is the branch manager at Bankers Life based in Phoenix, Arizona. We both hope that our conversation today will inspire a dad, a mom, or anyone that you're not alone. In 2020, we as a society all went through so many challenges. One of those challenges was the controversial aspects of COVID-19 and its vaccine. Some chose to get it, and some thought it was too risky. In today's episode, you will hear firsthand accounts of how my wife and Kip's wife were the unlucky ones to have severe adverse reactions post-vaccination that still affect them today. This is how I met Kip. We share that meeting each other was a godsend, not only for us as dads but mainly for our wives, as they could share the emotional toll of their symptoms and navigate the health mystery together. Watching our once extremely active, healthy wives suffer with no answers for the past two and half years still brings frustration, confusion, and anger. I hope that our family's health adversity gives others a voice who might still be struggling with the same thing.Throughout this episode, we also delve into the lighter aspects of life, exploring parenting and the magic of unexpected connections. We share personal stories, reflecting on our childhood memories and experiences that shaped our character. There's laughter, sadness and stories that remind us of the power of human connection- it's a conversation you don't want to miss. Today's episode features two novels intertwining family and wartime history. First, Anne Berest speaks with NPR's Scott Simon about The Postcard, based on the real-life holiday card her family received of relatives who'd been killed at Auschwitz years prior, and the journey that unfurled more than decade later to determine where the image came from. Then, Simon is joined by Luis Alberto Urrea, author of Good Night, Irene, who explains how his mother's real-life experience feeding and cheering on American soldiers during the war fueled his novel about the brave women on the frontlines of battle.
