Have you ever told your loved one they have dementia, only to be met with anger or disbelief? It's one of the most challenging situations caregivers face—trying to explain something their loved one simply can't understand. In this episode, we uncover the concept of anosognosia—a condition where the brain doesn't recognize the reality of cognitive decline—and share ways to approach this struggle with patience, love, and faith. The episode emphasizes the importance of community support. Caregivers who seek guidance early are better equipped to navigate challenges like anosognosia with confidence and peace. Whether it's through coaching, online communities, or caregiver groups, having a support system lightens the burden. Ever Wonder How To Know What Is Causing Your Caregiver Stress? “The nurse's role in monitoring the lab values really depends on the clinics you're working at, but really when our patients are receiving treatment, especially in the infusion center, the nurses should be looking at those lab values prior to treatment being started,” Clara Beaver, DNP, RN, AOCNS®, ACNS-BC, clinical nurse specialist at Karmanos Cancer Center in Michigan told Jaime Weimer, MSN, RN, AGCNS-BS, AOCNS®, manager of oncology nursing practice at ONS during a conversation about how to monitor and educate patients with cancer. It is proliferated very frequently in the bone marrow. But that is usually what we see. The cells that we see that stop treatment, and as you mentioned earlier, classic chemotherapy really the types of treatment that historically, we've been given and we have given to patients, and we've seen those blood counts really significantly impacted.” TS 6:21 “Kidney function, or renal function tests, are really determined whether the kidneys are functioning the way they should be. We look at an estimated glomerular filtration rate, or GFR, which is really based on the patient's protein level, their age, gender, and race. And the test really looks at how efficiently the kidneys are clearing the waste from the body. So that's really one that we need to look at, especially as we're giving agents that are excreted through the kidneys.” TS 12:23 “I think it's important for nurses to start looking at lab results with their patient very early on, you know, even before treatment starts, so they understand what the normals look like. So when they do get those lab results, because now pretty much everybody has patient portals, right? So the labs are reported in there, and they're seeing the labs before they're talking to their providers. if we can start early on and talk to them about what the normal lab values are, what they mean, and what we're looking at when we're drawing these labs. I think it's really important for the patient.” TS 27:00

Advancements in treatment combined with a multimodal approach are improving outcomes for patients with head and neck cancer. However, the unique challenges of a head and neck cancer diagnosis and its treatment side effects—such as speech and communication difficulties as well as negative effects on body image and self-esteem—can significantly impact a patient's mental health. In this episode, CANCER BUZZ speaks with Jacquelyn Doenges, LCSW, MSSW, CTTS, clinical oncology social worker at UT Southwestern Medical Center—Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Linda Hutkin-Slade, MSW, LCSW, OSW-C, clinical oncology social worker at David & Donna Long Cancer Center—Sharp Grossmont Hospital, about providing optimal psychosocial support for this patient population. “Ask your patients ‘what is most valuable to you, what gets you up in the morning…what do you draw strength from?' If we can tap into what is essential for them to be happy in life, [we can] try to problem solve and build skills in them so that they can counter some of the issues that they'll experience because of their treatment.”–Jacquelyn Doenges, LCSW, MSSW, CTTS “What we want is the patients at the center, and we want to build out a team around them so that they have as much support as possible, and that the energy is coming into the patient versus the patient trying to find these things [psychosocial care, dieticians, speech and language pathologists, oncology social workers].” –Linda Hutkin-Slade, MSW, LCSW, OSW-C Guests: Jacquelyn Doenges, LCSW, OSW-C, CTTS Clinical Oncology Social Worker, Head and Neck Surgery UT Southwestern Medical Center—Harold C. Recent advancements in treatment and a multimodal approach to care are improving outcomes for patients with head and neck cancer, however access to therapies and unique patient challenges due to disease symptoms, difficulty eating, difficulty communicating, and other psychosocial factors can reduce patient quality of life. In this episode, CANCER BUZZ speaks with Angelea Bruce, RD, CSO, OPN-CG, registered dietician and head and neck program navigator at Sharp Memorial Hospital and Brittney Watts, RN, head and neck patient care coordinator at Yale New Haven Hospital, about the importance of head and neck nurse navigation and how a dedicated navigator can help address these unique patient needs and improve care for patients with head and neck cancer. “I think looking at it through the eyes of the physicians, the health insurance, the organization [cancer program], and looking at what are the patient outcomes, success rates, delays in care, survivorship...I think those are important metrics to monitor and we [as head and neck patient navigators] can let a program know whether the patient's needs are being met.” –Angelea Bruce, RD, CSO, OPN-CG “Having a specific nurse coordinator for the head and neck community is vital to the patient's journey within the entire process. This is the point person for the patient, for the providers, and you are the connection for the patient to the healthcare facility.” –Brittney Watts, RN Guests Angelea Bruce, RD, CSO, OPN-CG Registered Dietician, Head & Neck Program Navigator Sharp Memorial Hospital San Diego, California Brittney Watts, RN Head & Neck Cancer Patient Care Coordinator Yale New Haven Hospital New Haven, Connecticut This episode, developed in connection with the ACCC education program Multidisciplinary Approaches to Head and Neck Cancer Care, was made possible with support by EMD Serono. Take a deep breath (do this anytime, anywhere, and as often as needed).2. Educate yourself. Learn about your loved one's disease and learn how to have a ‘relationship' with it.3. Create a support system. Learn to lean on family and friends. Find a community. Join a support group or talk to a therapist. Hire help or see if you qualify for assistance.4. PRACTICE SELF-CARE!! 5. Have a mantra that you can repeat when times get tough. You can follow Laura on Instagram @dear_dementia Thank you for listening. Podcast explores Caregiver Support Groups and which caregivers are the perfect candidates and how to find the right group for them. We also discuss the information needed from a caregiver to join a support group and how these groups assist in finding much needed resources. Guest: Marilyn Lawson is the founder of Eldercare & Caregiver Solutions, a company she established in 2016 to educate families about the various sources of support for caregivers and the elderly family members for whom they care. After a 29-year career in banking, having achieved the position of Second Vice President & Operations Officer, Mrs. Lawson took time off from the workforce to pursue a long-held goal to return to school. During that time, she volunteered for thirteen years with the Detroit Area Agency on Aging as an Advisory Council member; and in 2012, she was appointed to a two-year term as Chair of the forty-member Council. Later Mrs. Lawson became the first Executive Director for her church's non-profit community out-reach center where she served for three years. Following this career change, she spent seven years as primary caregiver to her mother, and she shared in the care of her aunt; both living well into their nineties. Mrs. Lawson holds Bachelor of Science Degrees in Marketing and Long-Term Care Administration from Madonna University, Livonia, Michigan. In 1998, she was inducted into the Kappa Gamma Phi, National Catholic College Graduate Honor Society. She holds Certificates in Eldercare Practice and Nursing Home Administration. In 2019, Mrs. Lawson was the recipient of The Hannon Foundation's Seventy over Seventy Impact Award for Life Long Learning. Through her business, Eldercare and Caregiver Solutions, Mrs. Lawson provides members of her caregiver support groups and patrons of her private consulting practice with information, tools and guidance on how to systematically approach the management of their loved one's custodial care and business needs while being transparent about their own circumstances as well. Mrs. Lawson is passionate about helping seniors and family caregivers find solutions to challenging issues in order to effectively and successfully navigate this phase of life.
