Perimenopause brings a lot of changes but there is good news! You see, when you understand what's actually happening in your body, you can take back control. In this week's episode of The Perimenopause Solution, I sit down with Jill Chmielewski, RN, BSN to unpack the critical metabolic and biological shifts that happen during perimenopause, and what you can do right now to support your body, energy, and long-term health. In the episode, we cover: The surprising connection between your hormones, muscle, and metabolism How to spot the early signs of imbalance before they spiral out of control When HRT makes sense vs. when it might not What you can start doing today to support your energy, mood, and longevity Midlife isn't a downhill slide but an invitation to approach your health in a whole new way. You have options, and this episode will help you understand them. Jill Chmielewski, RN, BSN Jill Chmielewski, RN, BSN, is a Registered Nurse, Health Coach, Menopause Educator, and Women's Health Advocate with over 30 years of experience in healthcare. She is a bold voice in the midlife health movement, calling out the outdated belief that it's all downhill after 40—and replacing it with something far more powerful: the truth that a woman's next chapter can be her strongest, healthiest, and most vibrant yet. Jill holds a Master of Jurisprudence in Health Law and is a certified health coach from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN). She has completed advanced training through the School of Applied Functional Medicine and the Institute of Bioidentical Medicine, with deep expertise in menopause, hormones, and hormone replacement therapy (HRT). As Education Lead at Respin Health, founded by Halle Berry, Jill combines science-based education with deep compassion and clinical insight, helping women understand their bodies, advocate for their health, and make informed, confident decisions. Her work is rooted in the belief that decline is not inevitable—it's simply what happens when we fail to adapt to our bodies' needs in midlife and as we age. Jill is the co-creator of two personalized Menopause Health & Hormone Optimization programs, the creator of The Beginner's Guide to Hormone Replacement Therapy, and a trusted clinician known for making complex topics clear, approachable, and actionable. Most recently, Jill was featured in the groundbreaking menopause docuseries "Four Days," created by filmmaker Charles Mattocks and a passionate team of experts and women willing to share their stories. The series was born from a quiet question: What if we finally changed the conversation, and turned into a movement? Because the silence around menopause has gone on too long. And because women deserve to be seen, heard, and supported in this next chapter of life. The docuseries is expected to air in late fall 2025. "I wanted to be a dolphin trainer... But here I am." - Kelly Guzman What happens when emergency nurses become healthcare design consultants? In this fascinating episode of Healthcare Interior Design 2.0, host Cheryl Janis sits down with two remarkable guests who made the leap from bedside care to transforming how healthcare spaces are designed. Meet Kelly Guzman, who traded her childhood dreams of training dolphins for a nursing career that began during the 1987 nursing shortage. After years managing emergency departments and clinical services at UCLA Health, Kelly discovered her true calling when tasked with moving entire hospitals into new buildings. Now CEO of Yellow Brick Consulting, she orchestrates complex healthcare facility transitions with military precision - including dress rehearsals with up to 900 staff members testing new spaces before they open. Meet Kevin Meek, whose journey started at age 13 as a hospital candy striper, inspired by the TV show Emergency 51. His design awakening came in 2014 when he walked through a micro hospital under construction and immediately knew it would be an operational nightmare. One complaint to his boss led to a game-changing meeting with architects in Texas, launching his transition from trauma nurse to design consultant. Both Kelly and Kevin have served on the board of the Nursing Institute for Healthcare Design (NIHD), our podcast industry partners. They found their tribe in this organization that connects clinical "unicorns" who felt alone in the design space. The NIHD's mission is to engage and integrate clinical expertise into healthcare facility planning through leadership, education, and advocacy - ensuring that the voices of those who actually work in these spaces are heard in the design process. Together, they've pioneered the concept of "clinically informed design" - and the stories they share will make you question everything you thought you knew about healthcare facility planning. From door handles placed in impossible locations to the eternal struggle of finding space for critical patient information at the bedside, this episode reveals the often hilarious (and sometimes heartbreaking) disconnect between beautiful design and functional reality. In this eye-opening conversation, you'll discover: How two emergency nurses found their calling as healthcare design "unicorns" and why the industry desperately needs more clinical voices The game-changing difference between evidence-based design and clinically informed design (hint: one involves research, the other involves asking the right questions) Why a door paddle eight feet from the door could be a matter of life and death - and other design details that seem obvious once you know them The fascinating world of hospital transition planning, where entire facilities rehearse their opening like a Broadway production How the Nursing Institute for Healthcare Design is connecting clinical expertise with architectural brilliance Real-world horror stories of beautiful spaces that staff absolutely hate to work in Practical strategies for nurses thrust into design meetings and architects wanting to truly engage clinical teams Why post-occupancy evaluations could prevent future design disasters (and why they rarely happen) Discover why nurses are the ultimate design unicorns, learn about the organization connecting clinical voices to design teams nationwide, and find out what happens when a nurse tells a prospective client that they "hate" their gorgeous new facility - with the architect standing right there. Did you know that bathrooms and showers – particularly in shared spaces – are a veritable breeding ground for pathogen, some of which we see in the form of mold and the build-up of toxic bio films on surfaces. Body fats and soap scums provide a rich food sauce for micro-organisms such as airborne bacteria Serratia Marcescens, which thrive in humid conditions. We know that people with weakened immune systems are so much more vulnerable to the illnesses associated with infection and let's face it, none of us go into the shower with an expectation that we might get sick. So how do we keep those shower walls clean? Well let's think big – BIG TILES. Porcelanosa have developed XXL Hygienic Ceramic Tiles that are 5 feet long - which means just one piece fits the wall of a shower or tub surround. XTONE Porcelain slabs are 10 feet high which means a floor to ceiling surface with no joints. Why does this matter? Well hygienic glaze will not harbor pathogen and surface impurities are easily removed to prevent build up – it is reassuring to know the evidence - INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS Test ISO 10545 - Resistance to Stains - has determined these surfaces can be easily cleaned and the most difficult contaminants washed away, greatly reducing the need for aggressive chemicals. Think about this. When we unload our dishwasher our ceramic tableware is sparkling clean, sanitized and fresh to use - again and again. The principle is the same with large ceramic walls - So, when planning the shower surrounds for your facilities please reach out to Porcelanosa. The designer in you will love the incredible options and your specification will deliver the longest & best lifecycle value bar none.

"In the Nurse coaching certificate course, we definitely learned about mindfulness. And you know, that sounds maybe trivial to somebody who's not familiar with Nurse coaching. Sure, we know mindfulness is research fact and very effective, but it just goes so much deeper than that. You know, we don't often as Nurses, allow ourselves enough time, time with our patients, time with ourselves, time to breathe, time to drink water, to take a rest, so allowing time and space to transpire, to let our bodies catch up with ourselves, to really hear what our patients are saying, you know, or what they're not saying.Time is... I really think mindfulness and time are so connected that we can be mindful, intentionally mindful, if we allow ourselves more time. So that is a big one. You know, I think that's a big one in this busy healthcare space, allowing more time or creating a way to allow for more of that." ~Maggie Gardner RN, BSN, HWNC-BC, CH-CAh Ha MomentsAs Nurses, we can do things to numb our emotional experiences- social media, alcohol, drugs, ignoring the things we experience - this is not serving you, it never has- maybe there is another way...There are so many pathways you can choose to take in your professional and personal life- go in the direction that lights you up- that is the best way to go- even if it's scaryYour sensitive heart is exactly what is needed to shift the way the healthcare system is being run! Jill is a Registered Nurse, Women's Health Expert, and Menopause Educator who is calling B.S. on the “it's all downhill from here” narrative on aging and teaching women how to reconnect with their bodies, support themselves through pausal stages, and advocate for their well-being forever and always. Jill believes education is the key to helping women understand their bodies, manage their health, and advocate for themselves as they age. Jill created The Beginner's Guide to Hormone Replacement Therapy to help women navigate the wild ride from perimenopause through menopause and beyond. In 2022, she launched Pausing Together, an online community for women to connect, learn, and open up discussions on topics that affect "PAUSAL" women. Jill is a medical advisory board member at the Institute of Bioidentical Medicine (IOBIM), whose mission is to improve the standard of care in menopause medicine. Jill is a frequent guest speaker and has been called upon as a “pausal” guest expert on many podcasts so I'm thrilled to have her on Perimenopause Simplified today. Together We Can Stop Shame and Blame in Nursing-Kristy Meyer RN, BSN, NC-BC Highlights“I feel like self-care is often discussed in a way like, well, you're burned out, it's because you're not doing self-care, or you're burned out, that means you're not resilient. And I feel like there's a lot of shame and blame in there, when really, we work in really tough environments, and we see really hard things, and a lot of times we have a lot of defensive mechanisms, I believe, like shielding ourselves from that, not feeling some of the feelings, and that's a good skill at times, because that's what you need to do to get through your work shift. But internalizing a lot of feelings and not taking care of your own basic needs just leads to a lot of health problems for us as Nurses.” ~Kristy Meyer RN, BSN, NC-BCAh Ha MomentsShame and blame are evident in discussions about self-care. Like the things you're doing daily to help yourself aren't good enough. It's important to change that narrativeIt's easier for Nurses to receive assistance when they can connect with a fellow Nurse, especially for health and wellness coachingIt can be difficult for Nurses to identify they are burned out and need help, because they are sooo good at caring for othersYou are powerful beyond measure and have the capacity to healLinks and ResourcesIntegrative Nurse Coach Academy INCCP CourseIntegrative Nurse Coaches in ACTION! podcastCultivating Shifts Integrative Health Nurse Coaching and EducationKristy's emailKristy's Facebook*****Integrative Nurse Coach Academy I Integr Our mission is to provide nurses with a global community for learning, networking, and reconnecting Integrative Nurse Coach Academy I Integr Our mission is to provide nurses with a global community for learning, networking, and reconnecting Thank you for listening. In part 2 of Jodi's story, Dr. Fox speaks with Nussbaum regarding her third pregnancy. After her second birth, Jodi began contemplating a different approach for her next pregnancy. She explored options between a hospital birth with her OB and a home birth with a midwife. Through research and self-reflection, Jodi shared the driving forces behind her decision to have a home birth and her experience with this process.
In this episode of Healthful Woman, Dr. Fox speaks with Jodi Nussbaum, a postpartum RN, lactation consultant, and mother of three in Seattle. She shares her journey from discovering her pregnancy to facing potential complications like a nuchal translucency test indicating chromosomal abnormalities, navigating genetic screening as an Ashkenazi Jew, and dealing with a breech baby and Rh-negative blood type issues during delivery. Despite these challenges, Jodi's story ultimately ends with a healthy delivery after a long induction process.
In this episode of the Birth Like a Mammal™ podcast, Lindsay is joined by Lauren Reza, a lactation consultant and natural Motherhood coach as well as the woman behind Lactation and Lullabies on Instagram. Lauren shares her journey from working in obstetrics as an R.N. to becoming a lactation consultant. She has a deep understanding of mammalian biology and the impacts of obstetric interventions on both lactation as well as Mother-baby bonding, most of which she gained from personal experience and observation working in labor and delivery. Lauren and Lindsay discuss topics related to mammalian biology, lactation, and mammalian parenting. Lauren advocates for a birth and postpartum experience that aligns with our mammalian biology, with minimal to no interventions, as that often inhibits or derails lactation and nursing. For those curious about the implications of obstetric interventions on nursing and Mother-baby bonding, this week's episode is a fantastic discussion of our modern lactation and nursing rates and how obstetrics has a hand in it. Lauren is available for virtual consults to anyone anywhere. You can connect with her via the contact information listed below.Key Takeaways:The role of instincts in making birth and postpartum decisions. The detrimental effects of common obstetric practices on nursing and lactation. The importance of creating a supportive and mammalian-aligned environment during birth and postpartum in order to promote lactation and nursing.Quotes from Lauren:"I knew a lot of times that those interventions could lead to a cesarean, and it was definitely a gut instinct that this was not the path I wanted to go.""It should be this beautiful dance between the mom and the baby, and they are partners in this process.""Just listening to our instincts can make a significant difference in our birthing and breastfeeding experiences."Lauren Reza can be found at @LactationAndLullabiesFlorida on Instagram. Ep.68 Empowering Children Living with Medical Conditions Through Play ||Mary Jenner RN BSN OCN Helping kids with conditions such as cancer through play is a wonderful way to support them. Playtime is not just fun but a powerful way for these brave kids to feel better emotionally and forget about their illnesses for a while. Giving them toys to play with lets them be creative and strong and have some normal fun, even though they are sick. These toys are like little sparks of happiness in their tough journey and a reminder to them that they are strong and can still be kids and have big dreams, even when things are hard. Join this conversation with Mary Jenner RN, former Pediatric oncology nurse who has dedicated her life to developing medical devices and toys for kids living with cancer. Mary Jenner wears many hats with passion and purpose. As a loving mother, dedicated nurse, and accomplished author of "The Butterfly Pig," she is also the driving force behind the innovative kid's medical device toys. Mary's mission is to create a world where children can gain confidence and understanding through play, particularly those with medical conditions. Her journey began in the challenging realm of Pediatric Oncology, where she recognized the need for medically inclusive toys. Years later, after nearly eight years of service as a care coordinator and clinic nurse in an adult oncology unit, Mary decided to take her commitment a step further. In April 2023, she bravely left her clinical role to fully devote herself to her thriving business, offering children a brighter, more inclusive future through the power of play. Tune in!
