Cat Bonney has lived in Oregon most of her life, with a brief stint in Texas, So Cal and a year overseas. She's had her own commercial/graphic arts business since college — which she started out of a desire to NOT remain at the college-assigned job in the kitchen, having to wake early to make breakfast for all of her college peers… After college, she came home for a two-week vacation, expecting to return to Texas, but during that time, her plans changed due to a health crisis with her boss. Liking the climate here and her mom living close, she decided to make Southern Oregon her permanent home. Cat and her wife live on the family ranch with a dog and a couple of cats, not to mention the neighborly sheep, cows and llama for security. Along with their marketing business, Webb Mountain Arts, and her contract as the Executive Director of a local non-profit, Common Connections, Cat is using her years of real estate appraisal experience to help Common Connections and Mid Rogue Foundation (another local non-profit) to manage the Housing Repair & Rehabilitation Program for low and moderate income homeowners in Josephine County. She is also an avid volunteer in various community programs, and as a business owner, she's involved in the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce. A significant amount of research is coming out regarding the indelible impact a Family Member's own self-care and Recovery process can make on an individual battling a Substance Use Disorder (SUD). This Episode highlights the positive outcome of improving the Family system, as the Family is, "one of the most important support groups for an individual seeking recovery from an SUD". These studies support leading Addiction Therapy and Treatment Center recommendations for care to focus on improving the Family system as a methodology in supporting a Family member challenged with an SUD. For long term success in overcoming an SUD, Recovery is much more than an individual's treatment, it is a way of life for the entire Family ecosystem.1) Qualifier - This term may be used in the 12 Step Programs or when speaking to Licensed Therapists. It may stem from the world of Insurance whereby the individual with an SUD is qualified for insurance coverage or the individual qualifies for treatment. The term is viewed as a softer description than 'addict', 'drug abuser', 'substance use abuser', etc.2) A Multifamily Group Curriculum for Family Members of Individuals with Substance Use Disorders: Updates, Perceptions, and Outcomes - I wish this was a link to a free version of the paper. I can only capture all that I quoted in this Episode on my website, as I did receive a copy of the paper directly from one of the authors. If more of this information was shared, even directly on the University, College or educational institution's site, the world would be better informed of these phenomenal studies and the work these researchers are contributing to the Recovery Community. 3) Substance Abuse Statistics - excerpt from Drug Abuse Statistics.org, "53 million or 19.4% of people 12 and over have used illegal drugs or misused prescription drugs within the last year". Please click this link, as you'll find a breakdown of types of drugs used, demographics, and more. 4) Addiction in the family is a major but neglected contributor to the global burden of adult ill-health - Extracted from the Science Direct link provided, this paper quotes, "Evidence is presented to suggest that, globally, addiction is sufficiently stressful to cause pain and suffering to a large but uncounted number of adult affected family members (AFMs), possibly in the region of 100 million worldwide."5) Inclusion of Family Therapy in Rehabilitation Program of Substance Abuse and Its Efficacious Implementation - Enver Ulaş, Halil Ekşi, First Published August 30, 2019 Abstract"The family has been described as the center or heart of societal relationships. There has been a historic neglect of research in area of counseling for the family members of substance abusers. As result, treatment for individual family members affected by alcoholism and drug addiction remains a neglected component of majority of addiction programs. The study used a sample of 36 families who participated in family theraThank you for listening and please visit www.siblinghoodofrecovery.com for free resources, links to organizations, groups and individuals who can offer help in the Journey of Recovery towards healing from substance use disorders. Episode 88 Notes and Links to Father Greg Boyle's Work On Episode 88 of The Chills at Will Podcast, Pete welcomes Father Greg Boyle, S.J., founder and director of Homeboy Industries. The two discuss Father's growing up in Los Angeles, his formative days in the Jesuit order, his life-changing time in Bolivia, and the breathtakingly-inspiring work he has done in the almost 40 years that he has worked at Dolores Mission Church and Homeboy Industries. The two discuss Father's transcendent books, Tattoos on the Heart, Barking to the Choir, and his newest stunner, The Whole Language: The Power of Extravagant Tenderness. A native Angeleno and Jesuit priest, from 1986 to 1992, Father Boyle served as pastor of Dolores Mission Church in Boyle Heights, then the poorest Catholic parish in Los Angeles that also had the highest concentration of gang activity in the city. Father Boyle witnessed the devastating impact of gang violence on his community during the so-called “decade of death” that began in the late 1980s and peaked at 1,000 gang-related killings in 1992. In the face of law enforcement tactics and criminal justice policies of suppression and mass incarceration as the means to end gang violence, he and parish and community members adopted what was a radical approach at the time: treat gang members as human beings. In 1988 they started what would eventually become Homeboy Industries, which employs and trains former gang Fathemembers in a range of social enterprises, as well as provides critical services to thousands of men and women who walk through its doors every year seeking a better life. Father Boyle is the author of the 2010 New York Times-bestseller Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion. His book, Barking to the Choir: The Power of Radical Kinship, was published in 2017. He has received the California Peace Prize and been inducted into the California Hall of Fame. In 2014, President Obama named Father Boyle a Champion of Change. He received the University of Notre Dame's 2017 Laetare Medal, the oldest honor given to American Catholics. Currently, he serves as a committee member of California Governor Gavin Newsom's Economic and Job Recovery Task Force as a response to COVID-19. Many factors contribute to children's pain being under estimated, under-recognized and inadequately treated. Kathryn Birnie, PhD shares her work identifying the top priorities essential for improvement in pediatric pain management. Join me in this episode as she shares her patient-oriented research which includes them in priority setting and recognizing the areas where we need to focus on. Her work is grounded in empowering the disempowered; the pediatric pain patients and their caregivers, working alongside and in concert with the clinicians, making the small and big shifts in doing so especially when there is a power differential. Dr Birnie discusses the top 10 priorities identified in pediatric pain management, how they went about doing so, especially having to distill them down to 10 from >500 identified at the start. She shares which one or ones of them should be prioritized to the top of the line, how that is relevant to each one of us caring for children, and what surprising elements, perspectives or shifts they encountered in the course of this work. We also explore her role as the Assistant Scientific Director of Solutions for Kids in Pain (SKIP), a knowledge mobilization initiative and how healthcare professionals and patients and families can participate in and benefit from SKIP. Dr. Birnie is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at the University of Calgary and a clinical psychologist at Alberta Children's Hospital. Tune in to learn more about how she is contributing to shaping pain research, education and clinical care for kids with pain and how that influences us as healthcare professionals in our day to day work! Takeaways In This Episode How Dr. Birnie got involved in pediatric pain management and what fueled the work she's doing right now Dr. Birnie shares behind the scenes of her research, Partnering for Pain, and its design involving patients and families alongside the clinicians and other stakeholders in improving pain care of children. The top 10 priorities in pediatric pain that Dr. Birnie and partners found What priorities we should be focusing on The gaps that various stakeholders need to be aware of in managing children's pain Work that SKIP is doing to advance pediatric pain care How institutions or healthcare professionals can be the beneficiaries of SKIP and how they may contribute to this important work Dr. Birnie's words of advice to healthcare professionals taking care of children with pain Links Kathryn Birnie, PhD Connect with Dr. Birnie - Linkedin Twitter @katebirnie Partnering for Pain Partnering for Pain Video Keeping Up with Today - Dr Christine Chamber's Podcast There's an App for that - Dr Jennifer Stinson's Podcast episode Making Pediatric Pain Matter - Dr Christopher Eccleston's podcast Episode Role of Epigenetics in Post-surgical Pain - Dr. Vidya Chidambaran's podcast episode Manage Memory, Manage Pain - Dr Melanie Noel's podcast episode Solutions for Kids in Pain (SKIP) Clinicians Pain Evaluation Toolkit Proactive Pain Solutions About the Guest Katie Birnie, Phd Dr. Birnie completed her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Dalhousie University in 2016, including a predoctoral residency in Pediatric Health Psychology at the IWK Health Centre. Editor-in-Chief Alan Jette interviews Dr. Gailey about his pilot randomized controlled trial to determine whether an evidence-based rehabilitation program would improve function in people with unilateral transtibial amputation who had already completed physical therapy and prosthetic training. Statistics have shown that less than 12% of people with amputations receive rehabilitation that targets impairments and activity limitations; this study makes a compelling argument for such programs for this complex population. Dr. Gailey is coauthor of “Effectiveness of an Evidence-Based Amputee Rehabilitation Program: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.” https://academic.oup.com/ptj/article/100/5/773/5707560

Thanks for tuning in to the Armor Men's Health Hour Podcast today, where we bring you the latest and greatest in urology care and the best urology humor out there. In this segment Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee take a few questions submitted online by listeners of the program. We value your feedback and input, and truly enjoy answering your questions on the air. Feel free to email us at armormenshealth@gmail.com to hear your question answered on an upcoming show!In particular, Dr. Mistry answers the following questions:--"I had my prostate removed 7 years ago at age 62 due to cancer. I have been unable to achieve an erection ever since. Would the new ultrasound treatments help someone like me? And if so, does Medicare pay for it?" Dr. Mistry discusses how this case might typically be treated at Urology Specialists by answering, "What is the role that shockwave plays in erectile dysfunction?" and "What do you do with post prostatectomy impotence?"If you remain unable to achieve an erection one year after a prostatectomy, your erections are unlikely to come back on their own. Fortunately, listeners will learn about NAU Urology's erectile rehabilitation program which combines the use of a vacuum erection device as well as a daily dose of Tadalafil and other supplements to maintain the health of your erections and penis. In addition, the use of inflatable penile prostheses are associated with a high degree of satisfaction and are covered by Medicare covered by most commercial insurances as well as the VA. --"I'm 65 years old and have ED. I'm seeking outside help. VA is causing me a lot of frustration." There are many options for patients with VA insurance, including testosterone therapy in the form of pills which cost approximately $30 per month. There is also what is known as intercavernosal therapy, which involves an injection of medicine into the penis that will allow the blood vessels that bring arterial blood into the penis to expand and give you a full rigid erection that can last for an hour. The shots cost about $8 per dose. Finally, the inflatable penile prosthesis is again a very successful and enjoyable option for those looking to extend their sex lives. Thankfully, we have Dr. Christopher Yang, a partner at NAU Urology Specialists, who spent an entire year perfecting the penile prosthesis procedure. Remember that it is always an option to seek out a second opinion when it comes to your health or a recent diagnosis. It is your right as a patient to not only be informed, but comfortable with your provider and treatment plan.If you enjoyed today's episode, don't forget to like, subscribe, and share us with a friend! An estimated 8 % of Americans are engaged in illicit drug use and nearly 7 % of the population fall into the category of 'heavy drinkers'. Addiction to alcohol and drugs can lead to a myriad of problems with health, both personal and professional relationships, and the law. Treatment of alcohol-dependent patients was primarily focused on inpatient settings in the past decades. The efficacy of these treatment programs has been evaluated in several studies and proven to be sufficient. However, with regard to the increasing costs in public healthcare systems, questions about alternative treatment strategies have been raised. Meanwhile, there is growing evidence that outpatient treatment might be comparably effective as inpatient treatment, at least for subgroups of alcohol dependents. On that background, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a high-structured outpatient treatment program in 103 alcohol-dependent patients. 74 patients (72%) terminated the outpatient treatment regularly. At 6 months' follow-up, 95% patients were successfully located and personally re-interviewed. Analyses revealed that 65 patients (64%) were abstinent at the 6-month follow-up evaluation and 37 patients ( 36%) were judged to be non-abstinent. Pretreatment variables which were found to have a negative impact (non-abstinence) on the 6-month outcome after treatment were a higher severity of alcohol dependence measured by a longer duration of alcohol dependence, a higher number of prior treatments and a stronger alcohol craving (measured by the Obsessive Compulsive Drinking Scale). Further patients with a higher degree of psychopathology measured by the Beck Depression Inventory (depression) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (anxiety) relapsed more often. In summary, results of this study indicate a favorable outcome of socially stable alcohol-dependent patients and patients with a lower degree of depression, anxiety and craving in an intensive outpatient rehabilitation program.
