Summary In this episode, Andy welcomes Dr. Patricia Grabarek, co-author of Leading for Wellness: How to Create a Team Culture Where Everyone Thrives. Patricia is an industrial-organizational psychologist and co-founder of Workr Beeing. She brings her expertise in workplace wellness, leadership behavior, and employee engagement to this timely conversation about how leaders can improve not just productivity, but people's lives. They explore the surprising truth that employee wellness isn't about perks like step challenges or mindfulness apps--it's about leadership. Patricia shares the difference between Generator leaders and Extinguisher leaders, how “Struggle Statements” foster psychological safety, and the simple yet powerful behaviors that make a lasting impact on your team's wellbeing. From practical strategies for setting boundaries to powerful recovery practices, this conversation offers a playbook for leaders who want to create sustainable performance through human-centered leadership. If you're looking for insights on how to lead with empathy while driving results, this episode is for you! Sound Bites “What we learned is that people think about wellness holistically. It's very individual.” “You can't yoga your way out of a toxic work environment.” “Most leaders don't wake up and think, 'I'm going to extinguish my team today.' It happens slowly and unconsciously.” “I don't think anyone's waking up and being like, I wanna make work suck for everybody around me today!” “Leaders are people. They fail at things. They're not always doing well. And when you have this ideal leader, that's the persona you're putting on, then your employees don't trust you.” “Your behavior as a leader is the most powerful wellness intervention you can offer.” “When leaders share their struggles, it creates a ripple effect of trust.” “If you want your team to respect boundaries, you have to model them first.” “Employees don't leave jobs—they leave leaders who extinguish them.” Chapters 00:00 Introduction 01:59 Start of Interview 02:11 What is Wellness? 04:05 Generators vs. Extinguishers 07:30 When Someone is an Inconsistent Extinguisher 08:57 What are Struggle Statements? 12:50 Recognizing Burnout and Its Signs 15:51 Strategies for Post-Work Recovery 18:12 The Role of Control With Stress 19:57 An Example of Someone Transforming How They Lead for Wellness 22:11 Organizational Wellness: What's Not Working? 23:53 Authenticity and Role Modeling in Leadership 26:20 Balancing Work and Life: Integrators vs. Segmenters 27:06 Fostering Wellness at Home 27:51 End of Interview 28:20 Andy Comments After the Interview 34:35 Outtakes Learn More You can learn more about Patricia and her work at WorkrBeeing.com/book. In today's conversation, Danielle Dinkelman shares the behind-the-scenes story of how she went from a music studio owner to an expert in employee wellness coaching. She explains why traditional employee assistance programs (EAPs) often fail to get engagement and how small businesses can implement meaningful wellness initiatives that employees actually use. Send us a textIn his second appearance on Happy at Work, Andrew Soren explores the complex relationship between meaningful work and well-being. Drawing from recent research, he reveals surprising findings about how highly meaningful work can sometimes lead to decreased well-being, and discusses practical ways to balance purpose with personal sustainability. In This Episode, You'll Learn:Why meaningful work doesn't always correlate with increased well-being, particularly in highly purpose-driven professionsThe six different motivations people have for finding work meaningful, according to researcher Michael PrattHow diversity in work motivations can strengthen teams and organizationsWhy an ecosystem approach (individual, team, organization, society) is necessary to address burnout in meaningful workThe importance of regular check-ins about how work aligns with personal meaning and purposeQuotable Moments: "Half of everything that's been written about meaningful work has been published basically in the last year... The amount of people writing and thinking about this topic is just doubling basically every single year.""If we go to them and are just like, 'hey guys, you just need to develop some more self-compassion here... you need to build your resilience skills'... there is nothing that will result in more moral outrage than kind of saying like, 'just take another meditation class.'"Practical Takeaway: Consider implementing regular check-ins with team members about how their work aligns with their sources of meaning, whether that's utility, status, passion, service, kinship, or mastery. Remember that these motivations can change over time and that having diverse motivations within a team can create stronger organizational dynamics.Resources Mentioned:"The Call of the Wild" study by Bunderson and Thompson (2009) about zookeepers - linkMichael Pratt's research on meaningful work motivations - linkCarol Riff's model of psychological well-being - linkConnect With Our Guest:Connect with Andrew Soren on LinkedInEudaimonic by DesignMeaningful Work MattersListen to Andrew's first appearance on Happy at Work here!To stay connected and continue the conversation, be sure to follow us on LinkedIn. In this episode Tanya Tarr, Senior Contributor, Forbes, and Behavioral Scientist, and host Joe Serio dissect the myths of workplace wellness. You might rethink those yoga sessions! Tune in now! Tanya and Joe dig into the nuanced world of well-being, whether at home or in the workplace. In this riveting episode, they switch gears from the comforts of home to the often chaotic terrain of the office. Ever wondered why pizza parties and gimmicky workplace wellness programs just don't cut it? This episode is for you. Who should listen? If you're an employee feeling stuck in a toxic work environment, a manager looking to foster a healthier workplace, or an HR professional striving for impactful wellness initiatives, this episode is your blueprint for creating a thriving work culture.  Here are a few thought-provoking takeaways about workplace well-being, toxic bosses, and the crucial aspects of creating a sense of belonging: 1. Balancing home and work well-being is crucial. Sometimes work is a sanctuary, other times it's home—either way, one impacts the other significantly. 2. Simply offering gym memberships or pizza parties isn't cutting it when it comes to workplace wellness. Real workplace well-being needs to be part of strategic planning and management. 3. Critical well-being factors to assess at work include physical comfort, solving interesting problems, professional development support, psychological safety, and feeling part of a supportive culture. 4. Meaningful workplace connections are key. If employees have genuine friendships at work, it's a strong indicator of an organization's health. 5. If you're stuck with an unsupportive boss, focus on what you can control. Seek intrinsic rewards like meaningfulness, choice, competence, and progress in your tasks.
