Recently, TCDI launched Military Spouse Managed Review (MSMR). This program offers reliable and flexible career opportunities for milspouses while also creating a diverse pool of qualified, adaptable and experienced reviewers for TCDI clients.  One skill you may not even realize you have as a milspouse, that will definitely come in handy if applying to TCDI, is familiarity with information security. Because of our military lifestyle, we are used to dealing with and managing sensitive information (#OPSEC). Kara points out that milspouses tend to show a much higher commitment to data security. It is almost innate to us and is a soft skill that TCDI doesn’t have to work to explain or train. Brandyn was a military police officer in the U.S. Army before he developed an interest in accounting.In 2017 BMC Accounting LLC was born. Since 2017, Brandyn has helped countless service members and milspouses with tax preparation and has taught them how they can be better prepared moving forward. Now, I’m sure you’re wondering what all of this means and how does it affect you when it’s time to file taxes. One topic that is really important to everyone, but more specifically the milSpouses and veteran community, is understanding the difference between a W2 employee and a 1099 Independent Contractor position. When a company lists a position, they’ve already decided if it will be a W2 or 1099 position. You don’t get to choose which type of position you want.

If making a goal for the entire year makes you anxious try making small monthly goals. Once you’ve been able to accomplish your monthly goals, start thinking of expanding your timelines and thinking of different ways to achieve your aspirations. On top of that, as military spouses our community is often times overlooked because employers think we don’t have the necessary skills because we move so often. We are diving into a deep discussion with VirtForce Power Partner, Instant Teams! Kimber talks with Kara Smith, Director of Customer Operations for Instant Teams (previously MadSkills). As an Army spouse and seven year remote career veteran, Kara is a subject matter expert on remote work and personal life balance.  As active duty milspouses, we need portable jobs in order to maintain careers. We want to PCS and know that our professional life is one thing that will remain constant. There is so much out of your control not only with virtual careers, but in the military lifestyle. It is incredibly easy to get into a negative mindset and think things like “I’m not worthy of this position” or “they’re going to judge me for being a milspouse.” Kara recommends owning what your life is. Do you like your life? Show that! Be honest with your potential employer and talk about your journey and what has brought you to remote work. “If there’s one thing I can say to anyone applying for remote positions: Don’t have the mindset that I did. Think like you’re going to get it and let the person on the other end know that you want it. It’s definitely possible,” says Kara. Basically, you should be treating every opportunity like it is the opportunity you are going to get. So what is Instant Teams? They build remote teams for their customers, who may have never worked with a virtual team before. They also focus on building up the culture of a remote workspace. As an organization, Instant Teams prioritizes encouraging people and building them up while cultivating relationships with both talent and customers. I record on computer through Audacity and output to a standalone PCM digital recorder.  This provides two different forms of backup for the 'cast - Toby conceived this scheme and he did it right. We do have different equipment to do this and usually it's not a problem.  I have a PC and a Zoom H2 - the previous three podcasts were done using this equipment.  On the last podcast, I was getting this annoying clicking on the computer version so I just used the digital recording version - worked great! This time the roof fell in. The recorder I was using just died - it was supposed to be on AC but it thought it was on batteries so it died instantly after I started the recording and I didn't realize it until I looked and the recorder was dark.  So the first five minutes of the podcast were lost on the digital recorder.   Normally this would not be much of an issue but I could not get the PC and Audacity to go to stereo so my only source of stereo was the recorder - which was missing the first five minutes of the 'cast.  I had the whole podcast on the computer in mono which is not great to edit because we split the mics left and right to be able to edit out issues easily. Plus, and I am still puzzled by this, the only level that was good mic-wise was my mic.  I had to boost both Jeff and Larry's mics tremendously after the fact in order to be heard. Boosting an audio signal is never good if you don't have anything reasonable to begin with.  It just goes pear-shaped. That's why it sounds, at times, as if they are being punched into the audio stream from a bathroom.  I promise they were both present in the room - it just doesn't sound that way. I edited the first five minutes of the podcast from the computer (in mono) and then joined it to the stereo portion of the digital recorder that had really low mic levels for Jeff and Larry.  And actually, neither the H2 nor the PC had any sort of reasonable mic levels so it must have been something on the Mackie board that I did wrong. Still checking that. The result is so over-processed it sounds like I'm using a phase shifter on the podcast which isn't hard to imagin...

I record on computer through Audacity and output to a standalone PCM digital recorder.  This provides two different forms of backup for the 'cast - Toby conceived this scheme and he did it right. We do have different equipment to do this and usually it's not a problem.  I have a PC and a Zoom H2 - the previous three podcasts were done using this equipment.  On the last podcast, I was getting this annoying clicking on the computer version so I just used the digital recording version - worked great! This time the roof fell in. The recorder I was using just died - it was supposed to be on AC but it thought it was on batteries so it died instantly after I started the recording and I didn't realize it until I looked and the recorder was dark.  So the first five minutes of the podcast were lost on the digital recorder.   Normally this would not be much of an issue but I could not get the PC and Audacity to go to stereo so my only source of stereo was the recorder - which was missing the first five minutes of the 'cast.  I had the whole podcast on the computer in mono which is not great to edit because we split the mics left and right to be able to edit out issues easily. Plus, and I am still puzzled by this, the only level that was good mic-wise was my mic.  I had to boost both Jeff and Larry's mics tremendously after the fact in order to be heard.

Boosting an audio signal is never good if you don't have anything reasonable to begin with.  It just goes pear-shaped. That's why it sounds, at times, as if they are being punched into the audio stream from a bathroom.  I promise they were both present in the room - it just doesn't sound that way. I edited the first five minutes of the podcast from the computer (in mono) and then joined it to the stereo portion of the digital recorder that had really low mic levels for Jeff and Larry.  And actually, neither the H2 nor the PC had any sort of reasonable mic levels so it must have been something on the Mackie board that I did wrong. Still checking that. The result is so over-processed it sounds like I'm using a phase shifter on the podcast which isn't hard to imagine given that I equalized, compressed, limited, low-passed, high-passed, amplified, reduced, etc. etc. etc. This is the Frankenstein of podcasts and just about as pretty.
