There's many ways to approach budgeting, and finding a way that works for us that is also simple is our aim! If you want to do better with your finances this year but you already know you’re not going to turn your life upside down to do it then check out The Frugal Friends Workbook. I have a best-selling book on Amazon titled The No-Spend Challenge Guide and before frugal Friends that was the thing that I was known for. So to say I am a fan of what a no-spend challenge can do for your saving and spending is a massive understatement. I am obsessed. A no-spend challenge is a block of time that forces you to step back from the money routines and habits your brain has been falling back on and gives you the opportunity to make changes. You will hate it. It will be the worst but you will learn so much about yourself and your spending. And over at Modern Frugality I am hosting a free live 7-day no-spend challenge where you will get trainings, insights, and accountability for seven days straight. It starts TODAY Jan, 1 And you can join anytime over the 7-days and get access to everything in the group so come join us modernfrugality.com/challenge and I will see you there. Notable Notes: What the Internet has to say: This article from Savvy Savers Academy (https://www.savvysaversacademy.com/budgets-freedom/) lays the foundation for 'why' having a budget is a good thing. Most of us are on board with budgets being helpful - but this is a helpful argument in case you need a reminder ;) What Jen and Jill have to say: We agree with the point that budgets are glorified 'plans' for our money. Follow through can be difficult, but we have found that when we're not planning we actually have anxiety about spending on anything, even things we need! Budgeting gives you a peace of mind on current spending and future living A good way to start is to track your spending try mint (https://www.mint.com/) A budget gives control and freedom to spend More from the Internet: This article from Student Loan Hero (https://studentloanhero.com/featured/simple-budgeting-methods-for-financial-health/) outlines 5 different budgeting methods and how to incorporate them into your financial planning. More from Jen and Jill Jen uses a zero based or pay-yourself-first method so they can put the highest percentage possible to debt and savings Jen likes the idea of the envelope system and it works great for people like Allison of Inspired Budget (https://inspiredbudget.com/) who we had on the podcast (Episode 18), but it’s not for her Here are the different budgeting methods: Zero-based Pay-self first Envelope system 50/30/20 No budget BILL OF THE WEEK - Thank you Jocelyn for your bill! We appreciate our long time listeners - and we enjoyed the movie reference! If you want to submit your bill of the week visit http://frugalfriendspodcast.com/bill to leave us a bill Ways to Stick to Your Budget - Tips from the Frugal Friends Community (https://www.facebook.com/groups/frugalfriendspodcast/) ! Sage gets paid the first of the month and will pay all her bills and debt right away then spend whatever’s left. And the key to her success in that is leaving her credit cards at home! Amia plans out the whole month in advance but gets paid bi-weekly so she sets her bills to come out on each of her paydays. And she also keeps the last credit card she hasn’t cut up at home. Christine uses two checking accounts so all of her monthly bills come out of one and she uses the other for spending. This is good if you don’t have the option of paying everything on 1 or 2 particular days. Juvy uses the Mint app to track her budget because she gets notifications when she’s nearing her limit. Apps are a great way to bring your budget with you. I also like HoneyFi it’s a similar budgeting app for couples. Whitney uses EveryDollar and Ashley uses YNAB, all can be configured with the zero-based budget. Sue reminds us to prioritize sinking funds in our budgets so we’re not surprised by those often forgettable or unpredictable annual or biannual expenses. Wrap-Up: Thanks so much for listening! Ah that nostalgic period where you may have had to make your bed but you didn’t have to pay bills. Your childhood wants you to know that you may be an adult but it’s still around. Creepin in the crevices of your brain, waiting until an Nsync song comes on the radio or you see 90’s fashion come back in style. Everything else was a dumpster fire this year why not fashion too? Like fashion, you may have thought you had good ideas at the time but learned later that you were wrong. So let your childhood remind you that thoughts are flexible and you can change them at anytime. Childhood, the things you thought when you were 7, 17, or even 27 may not be accurate today. If you've ever been curious about what it would be like to pair down your clothing essentials, this one's for you! While there are all sorts of definitions and guidelines out there for how to achieve a 'capsule' or minimalist wardrobe, we are providing the foundational tips and principles to create a closet that is simple and beloved. Sponsors: Jen- The Frugal Friends Workbook! We are so excited to share this with you in two short weeks! We’ve always worked to promote healthy conversations about money and those don’t have to start with telling people how much debt you have and what your 401k is invested in. So The Frugal Friends Workbook helps you do that with challenges and questions designed to help you open up about money but also change some habits. It launches August 7th and if you want that buy now button in your inbox on launch day go to https://www.frugalfriendspodcast.com/workbook. Jill- Less is more - when it comes to garlic knots, pasta, and doughnuts this couldn’t be further from the truth - BUT our sponsor wants us to know that sometimes having less of something provides space for more of something else - kinda like less complaining leads to more joy. Less is more - only true for some things in life. Notable Notes: What the Internet has to say: This article from Be More With Less (https://bemorewithless.com/how-to-build-a-capsule-wardrobe/) gives us 3 foundational tips for building our own capsule wardrobe. What Jen + Jill have to say: 1. See 2. Sort 3. Choose More from the Internet: This article from The Blissful Mind (https://theblissfulmind.com/capsule-wardrobe-basics/) provides us with a list of the top 10 capsule wardrobe essentials More from Jen + Jill: Choose a color palette. It's ok to like black/grey/white, but you can also make it colorful! We love their definition of a capsule wardrobe: "A small collection of useful clothing that you love” - now how great does that sound?! BILL OF THE WEEK - This week's bill is brought to us by EveryPlate (https://www.everyplate.com) ; America's best value meal delivery kit! We tried it and agree that the food is fantastic, affordable, and super convenient! EveryPlate’s recipes come with everything already pre-measured so we don’t buy a whole bunch of stuff at the grocery store that will just go to waste. And every meal comes together in about 30 minutes – definitely faster than a trip to the grocery store or starting a meal from scratch. You can get 3 weeks of EveryPlate meals for only $2.99 per meal by going to EveryPlate.com (https://www.everyplate.com) and entering code FRUGAL3 at checkout. We are starting in on our summertime listener requests today with a show all about making the most of your outdoor space, no matter how big or small, as inexpensively as possible. Sponsors: Listeners like you: We love you guys. You are the third most important reason we keep doing this podcast behind liking each other and the money. And if you would like to support the show head to FrugalFriendsPodcast.com/support to find free and inexpensive ways you can help us big time with little effort! Neighbor shame: Want to get your neighbor to mow their overgrown lawn? Send neighbor kids to knock on their door with a lawn mower various days throughout the week. The neighbor kids will either make some money mowing the lawn or the neighbor will eventually be shamed into doing it themself. Neighbor shame, if you care more about your neighborhood looking nice than actually being nice. Notable Notes: What the Internet has to say: This article from Budget Dumpster (https://www.budgetdumpster.com/blog/backyard-landscaping-ideas-on-a-budget/) gives us some great ideas for making our yards look great on a budget What Jen + Jill have to say: Vertical Garden - consider this approach if short on space AND can be inexpensive to make if using recycled materials (i.e bottles, containers) Utilize Color - consider how you use paint; if you have ‘mismatched’ planters but prefer a more clean look - paint it! Look for plant swaps in your area Plant useful! FORM AND FUNCTION Rosemary - fleas+ticks Peppermint - ants, spiders mosquitoes Basil - mosquitoes + house flies Lavender (the cadillac of plants!)- moths, fleas, flies, mosquitos Ground cover - natural perennial ground cover (i.e. sedum, creeping periwinkle, violets, pansies, snow glories, moss flox) Incorporate inexpensive lighting, fire pit, seating Compost instead of mulch, free mulch from tree companies Save old tires from the dump More from the Internet: This article from An Oregon Cottage (https://anoregoncottage.com/gardening-to-save-money-10-high-yield-low-cost-plants-to-grow/) gives us a list of the top 10 plants to grow that give us a great return on our money More from Jen + Jill: Herbs - easy to grow, not bothered by pests, grow in mediocre soil BASIL - freezes well, also PESTO! Squash - super high yield at peak (veggie noodles, breads, stir fry..) *important to pay attention to your climate and the varieties and types of fruits/veggies that can be grown in your area Lettuce and greens - hearty and fast grower Hot peppers - we love salsa! BILL OF THE WEEK - Thank you Amanda for sharing your utility bill that you dropped by $13 If you want to submit your bill of the week visit https://www.frugalfriendspodcast.com/bill to leave us a bill Lightning Round How we do/will maintain our lawns Jill Personally most concerned about decreasing maintenance - plan to have little to no grass in backyard Plant usefully - I like flowers, but I also REALLY like food - veggies will be priority Plan to live life outdoors quite often - creating oasis (with my own hands) will save money on labor and hopefully in other areas in the long run Propogate my own - from my own yard/garden AND others - considering this before I buy any plants! Jen- I kill everything so I don’t have a garden. We compost and use well water to water our lawn. Wrap-Up: Thanks so much for listening! Reruns: here to remind us of the days when we couldn’t actually choose what we watched. Before the days of netflix and hulu there was “basic cable” - come come, gather round the fire while I tell you about ancient days when a television (these were like phones, tablets, and laptops only with large protrusions off the back filled with stuff that can never be thrown away)...a television... had access to approximately 3 ‘channels’ with 1 show playing non-stop. The likelihood of seeing the same episode of the same show more than once was 2,000%. Oh it was fun and it was awful all at once, but we didn’t know any different - we called them reruns - and we ate our hot dogs and mac and cheese in blissful ignorance while the 5th airing of Family Matters ‘good cop, bad cop’ episode played. This might shock you, but not everything you see in movies is real. There really is not a real life Infinity Gauntlet for you to snap your fingers with. But that doesn't mean movies have no themes and lessons that actually translate to the real world. Our guest today is Philosophy Professor Wayne Yuen of Ohlone College in Fremont, who has written many books about the various ethical lessons presented in movies. It's becoming all too normal in the Bay Area lately: you look up, and instead of blue sky or fog, you see nothing but smoke. Governor Jerry Brown said the other day that massive wildfires and smoke filled skies are becoming the “new abnormal” here in California. The environmental impacts of these wildfires run deep, but they also could have a significant impact on housing here in the Bay Area. Today we welcome Colin Davies from Security Pacific to talk about how Bay Area housing is impacted by all the smoke. We also do a quick recap of the midterm elections impact on housing, and look back 10 years ago at a time when the country was in the middle of a massive recession. It's becoming all too normal in the Bay Area lately: you look up, and instead of blue sky or fog, you see nothing but smoke.
