****This podcast is reposted from October, 2019I thought we could use a change from the Corona Virus news to something relevant and important during all times.I've written about it. ADDitude Magazine has had some coverage of it. But there is not a lot of research available about how having ADHD as an adult impacts our ability to parent. When we have kids our own issues become amplified.Parents with ADHD need help with three main areas life management, emotional management, and self-care. Listen in as we discuss all three. Witness is who we are, testify is what we doJohn 1:6-8 December 15, 2019I. Introduction:A. Announce Christmas offeringB. How many of you ever had to answer this question before? “Do you swear to tellthe truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth, so help you God?”1. If you did that means you were a witness – you were someone who hadfirsthand, direct, personal knowledge about someone or something.2. What you did is give a testimony – that is the statement you made regardingwhat you were personally aware of in order to provide evidence.C. Last week we learned that Jesus is God’s perfect message to the world, God’slight to this spiritually dark world. The world did not understand Him or what Hewas trying to communicate to us about God and His ways.1. That introduced the section we are dealing with this Christmas in John 1:1-182. Please turn in your Bibles now – and share with someone who may not haveone.D. This week the subject changes from the Jesus, God’s perfect light or message thatshined into this dark world, to that of a witness. A man named John who was sentfrom God for the very purpose to be a witness of Jesus Christ!E. Before I read this section let me show you the simple structure of the key versewe will be looking at, v7.1. Who he was – a witness,2. What he did - testified,3. Why he did it – that I want you to watch for and see if you can figure it out aswe read.4. Read v1-8F. Before we jump into this passage, let me remind you that John was sent by Godthe Father for the purpose of being a witness of Jesus Christ, the light. Every oneof us here this morning, that is a believer, have been sent by Jesus Christ for thesame purpose of being a witness of Jesus Christ, the light.1. Acts 1:82. 1 Peter 2:9• So what we learn about John this morning has special relevance to us because it isalso true of you and me! I just want to focus on v7 this morning as we look at thewho, the what and the why of John and you and me! Let’s start by looking at the whoand the what together because they go hand in hand!II. Who we are, and what we do!A. A witness is who we are as believers in Jesus Christ and testifying is what we do!Reread v7a-bB. Let me unpack that line (a witness is who we are; testify is what we do) for just amoment as it is crucial for our lives and ministries.1. The word witness and testify are the exact same word in the Greek, exceptone is a noun and the other is a verb!2. A noun identifies who we are – it tells us something about ourselves, ouridentity; it is the distinguishing characteristic that makes who we are distinctfrom others!3. A verb tells us what we do – the activities we engage in.4. Just like a surgeon does surgeries and a runner runs, so a witness testifies!C. Who we are and what we do are intimately connected to one another and oneflows out of the other. Let me illustrate thatD. 1. We had our grandson Jonny, who is three, over this week and he was going tohave a baby sister just a day or two from then. He made it very clear to me thathe was not a baby but a big boy!a) Not long after that Jonny began some behavior that was not fitting for abig boy so I reminded him he was not a baby but a big boy and what bigboys do. Instantly his behavior switched to fit his identity as a big boyrather than behavior that fit a baby.2. When we recognize who we are that identity controls our behavior as ourbehavior flows out of who we see ourselves to be!E. So what is a witness? A witness, who we are, is someone who has personal anddirect knowledge about something who provides evidence in a case. The witnessis the person, the testimony is what we do - makes a statement about what theypersonally know or have seen and that statement becomes evidence in a case.1. A witness swears to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truthbecause their job is not to add anything to what they know, or subtractanything from it. Their job is not to give their opinions or speculate on thefacts.2. Their job is to tell the truth about what they personally know!3. Our job is to tell other the truth about what we know about Jesus and haveexperienced of Him. That can come from what we know of Him from theBible or what we have seen Him do for us in our personal lives!F. John was sent by God to be a witness, that is who he is, a person who had directknowledge about Jesus, and he testified about Jesus, that is where he told peoplewhat he knew about Jesus! A couple examples:1. John 1:19-23 – A “voice” that is a witness2. John 1:29-34G. So God created us or better said recreated us, caused us to be born again as newcreatures who are witnesses or a synonym to that is ambassadors,1. We see who we are issuing into what we do in 2 Corinthians 5:17-21a) v17 new creaturesb) v 18 – he gave us something to do – ministry of reconciliationc) v19 – explains this ministry – Jesus did the work of reconciliation andwe spread the wordd) v20 – therefore – in light of all of this – this is who we are“ambassadors”(1) we are God’s official representatives in this world(2) as if God Himself were speaking through us passionately callingpeople to come to Christe) v21 – the message• So John was sent by God to be a witness, telling other people what he knew aboutJesus. Next he tells us why witnessing is so important in God’s kingdom. Let’s lookback at the end of v7 and …III. Why we witnessA. Read v7 again.1. Yes, it is a big deal to be a witness because it is through witnesses tellingpeople what they know about Jesus that people come to believe in Jesus!2. God has chosen us to be His agents, His ambassadors, His instrument, Hismeans, His witnesses to tell others about the light so that they can believethrough what we testify to them, about what we know directly from ourexperiences and the Bible, about Jesus.B. We have been entrusted with the most powerful and life changing message in theworld. – The gospel of Jesus Christ.a) Read 1 Corinthians 1:18• So what do we do with this recognition that we are witnesses who testify of what weknow of Jesus so others can be savedIV. Final ExhortA. Ron Hutchcraft years ago taught us here at MVC the three open prayer that whenit becomes part of our prayer life as witnesses it will get us right in the middle ofthe mix of eternal and kingdom activity.1. It has been amazing how when I pray this way God has done exciting thingsin light of it.2. Maybe even more amazing is the question why I do not pray like this everyday!B. Three open prayer1. Open door – Colossians 4:2-32. Open mouth – Ephesians 6:193. Open heart – Acts 16:14C. Are you ready when God opens that door?1. Are you ready to talk about what you personally know or have experiencedwith Jesus, especially how you came into a relationship with Him?a) That would be time well spent to think that through for the sake of othersand the glory of God!2. Are you ready to tell someone how they can come into a relationship withJesus Christ – the gospel?a) A few helps to have on hand in wallet; purse whatever to make thateasier.b) Gospel tractc) Seed card – man at Costco this week – I was not readyD. Pray three open prayer – Gary Olson

Her music is some of my favourite music in the world. We were tasting a few of the most popular Christmas sandwiches available here in the UK but as you’ll hear we got thoroughly waylaid. Guilt and ShameVarious Passages November 3, 2019I. Introduction:A. Sin not only deeply impacts the quality of our life and relationships but it leaves adeep imprint our own souls regarding our own identity (how we view ourselves, who we think we are) and makes our conscious carry the heavy weight of guilt!B. Today I want to address guilt and shame.1. Guilt is that feeling that I have done something wrong.2. Shame is that feeling that I am wrong.a) That deeply feeling that I am no good, defective, unacceptable, evendamaged beyond repair.C. While guilt and shame are closely intertwined with each other, I want to separatethem this morning because God’s answer to each one is slightly different.D. As I move into this today, let’s start withII. ShameA. Shame is the feeling that I am bad, I am wrong, I am evil! it is about who you are, specifically who you see yourself to be1. Shame makes you hide who you really are and what you have done fromothers thinking if they knew the real you they would never like you.B. Shame first appears in the garden after Adam and Eve sinned by eating of the fruitthat God told them not to eat. Read Gen 3:7-10C. Note especially that their first response was to make themselves loin coverings outof fig leaves to hide intimate parts of their body from each other but also theysought to hide from the presence of God. Point out 7c, 8b, 10b1. But listen to how God provided for them in their new state of sin and shame.2. Read v21 – God provided for them garments of skinsD. We can see two things here that deal with our shame-1. First, the sacrifice of an innocent animal to cover the sins of Adam and Eve2. Secondly, the skin of that sacrifice was made into garments to cover theirshame and nakedness! He gave them clothingE. And that is exactly what God has done for us today in Jesus1. Not only has God given Jesus as the sacrifice to pay the death penalty for oursins2. But He has also offered that same sacrifice, Jesus as our new clothing tocover our shame3. Gal 3:27-28a) Those of us who are in Christ have been clothed with Jesus Christb) When God sees us He no longer sees us according to our nationality, social status or gender or even our sins but rather He sees Jesus when Helooks at usF. Clothes have the ability to give us a new identity, a new look and to cover up theparts of our life that we do not want others to see!1. A few months back I wore a pair of Nike’s on a Sunday morning. I wasamazed at the number of young people that noticed and commented how coolI was for wearing them.a) The kind of clothes we wear gives us a new identity as often peoplevalue and identify us by the clothes we wear!2. Also, clothing covers what we do not want others to see!a) I had numerous people at my daughter’s wedding tell me how good Ilooked and I did look much better than usual as a tuxedo does wondersfor a man.b) But, I could not help but think of what people would have said if I didmy daughter’s wedding in a bathing suit – not as much hidden, not asmuch pretty.G. God has provided for me a new set of clothing to deal with my shame and thelabel on that clothing is Jesus! He covers my sin and is my new identity!H. So “God’s solution to shame is the clothing of Jesus!” Let me repeat. You repeat!• Let’s now take a look at the emotional damage sin does in the area ofIII. Our Guilt!A. Guilt is the awareness and the feeling that I did something wrong and it isconnected with our conscienceB. The foundation that every believer in Jesus Christ stands on is that all of our sins, past, present and future have already been paid for by Jesus Christ in His deathand they are forgiven forever.1. Listen to Hebrews 10:11-12.2. The penalty for our sin has already been paid, but the consequences of ourdaily sins are felt deep within our souls.B. It is the blood of Jesus reapplied to our conscience that deals with our guilt!Remember the penalty is already paid; now we are dealing with the consequencesof our daily sins upon our emotions and conscience!1. 1 John 1:92. Ps 32:1-5C. So, while “God’s solution to shame is the clothing of Jesus!” on the other hand“God’s solution to guilt is the cross of Jesus!”• So how do these truths seek deep within our souls to change the way we see ourselvesand release us from the heavy load of guilt we are carrying. We need toII. Reckon what God says is true as true for you!A. Reckoning simply means to count what God has already said is true as true foryou.1. In the first ten verses of Romans 6 God states all these amazing truths thathappened to us at the cross of Jesus then He tells us in verse 11 to count, toconsider, to reckon these same truths as true of us.2. I cannot name and claim things that I want to be true in my life, but I doname and claim the things that God says are already true about me! So yes, Iam a “name it and claim it guy” – I name and claim everything that God saysis true of me “in Jesus”!B. So regarding my shame I put on the clothing of Christ by:1. Daring to believe what God says is true of me! I see myself, as I really am anew creature in Christ at the core of my being, a saint!a) Yes, a saint who still sins, but not just a dirty rotten sinner at my core, who has been forgiven.2. One practical tool that could help you with this is a card that is our smallgroups ministry created and is using. If you are struggling with shame, beginto pray through these different truths about you in Christ! Praise throughthem, thank God for each one, meditate and memorize the passages that areespecially relevant to you.C. When it comes to reckoning the cross of Jesus regarding my guilt. I thank Godthat forgiveness is already mine and I confess my sins to experience the cleansingof my conscience!• As we go toIII. CommunionA. Today let us make Ps 139:23-24 our prayer. He is appropriating in prayer whatGod said is already true. He is asking God to make that truth personal in his life.Cr v1B. Ask God if there are any hurtful way of shame or guilt within you.1. If it is shame ask Him to lead you to the piece of clothing in Jesus you needto put on, claim as your own and mediate on it2. If it is guilt over unconfessed sin regarding something you have done, confess it to God and experience the cleansing of your conscience3. If it is guilt over something you are just not clear on what you did but justhave this general sense of guilt then I would identify it as false guilt from theDevil!a) God’s conviction by the Holy Spirit is never unclear and vague but clearand direct regarding the sin, you will know what you did!b) Satan’s false guilt is always unclear & vague it does not need to beconfessed but rather resisted in the name of Jesus!C. Pass elements and time to reflect before the Lord
Hurt and ForgivenessGen 37-50 Life of JosephOctober 13, 2019I. Introduction:A. Baby Announcement - Grayson Gary Borger was born September 26 to Matt andLexi. The proud grandparents are Gary and Tami Reyna. The proud greatgrandparents are Don and Sharon Couwenhoven.B. Today’s sermon is my most direct response to the Father’s Day sermon I gave ayear and a half ago about those who did not have a good relationship with theirparents. But the truths we learn from today’s message will apply to anyone whohas been hurt by someone, whether a parent, a mate, a trusted friend or even astranger! The various kinds of damage to the human soul still linger long after theevents took place.C. The struggle is real and the pain is especially deep for those who have been hurtby who is supposed to love you like a mate, parent, sibling, trusted friend, etc.D. The goal of my message today is learn how to turn “victims” of people’s sinsagainst them into a “victors” over that sin!• This morning I want to jump-start the process of healing by showing you threelessons from the life of Joseph that turns victims into victors. Let’s start by seeinghow …II. Joseph was a VictimA. The first happened to Joseph when he was 17 years old. God had shown him in adream that someday he would rule over the rest of his family. When he sharedthis dream with his family, it was not received very well.1. One day when his brothers were out in the field with the flocks they sawJoseph coming towards them and they plotted together to kill him.2. Eventually rather than killing him, they sold him as a slave to someIshmaelite foreigners who were passing by on their way to Egypt.3. When these Ishmaelites reached Egypt, they sold Joseph to an Egyptianofficer named Potiphar, who was the captain of the bodyguard.4. So Joseph was literally sold into slavery by his own family.B. Potiphar’s Wife1. God was with Joseph and all that he did prospered. So Potiphar put him incharge over everything that he owned.2. Now Joseph was a handsome man and Potiphar’s wife desired to sleep withhim. Day after day, she offered herself to Joseph but he refused her offers.3. One day Potiphar’s wife was tired of his rejections and grabbed his garmentas he was running away, and she made up a story that he tried to rape her.Because her lie, Joseph actually ended up in jail!C. While in jail through a long chain of events, Joseph ended up interpreting thedream of one of the king’s servants who was in jail with him.1. Joseph asked only one request, he asked the cup bearer that when it went wellwith him to remember to mention Joseph to Pharaoh so he could get out ofthe jail2. Well the cupbearer forgot to mention Joseph to the Pharaoh and he spent twomore years in jail because of this man’s neglect and forgetfulness.3. Eventually Joseph got out by God giving him the wisdom he needed tointerpret the Pharaoh’s dream.D. The point is this, over a 13-year period from the age of 17 to 30; Joseph threetimes had to bear the severe consequences of someone else’s sin or neglect.• But what we learn from Joseph’s life are the lessons that turn a victim into a victor. The first lesson we can learn from Joseph isIII. Seeking God in the midst of your painA. Read Gen 41:50-52B. Now we know from the story as it goes on that Joseph did not forget the details ofwhat happened to him.1. So forget is not used in the sense that God wiped the memory of the situationclean from his mind,2. Rather what happened to him was that God had broken the power of thatsituation controlling and enslaving his mind.C. Note that it was “God” who made him forget, and it was “God” who made himfruitful. Reread v51 & 52 emphasizing “God”1. It is important that we get face to face with God in the midst of our pain andallow Him to do His work of healing us, breaking the power of that memoryand using our life and pain to bring glory to Him and blessing to others.2. When God meets us in our pain and messes as someone has said, “our messbecome our message!” that God uses to bring life and grace to othersD. I mentioned last week that when we seek God in the places He is working(programs, services, etc.) and deeply depend upon Him miracles happen! I call itDD & DD. Due diligence on our part and deep dependence upon God1. At Next Steps Table pick up resource cards!2. This last week Emotional Resilience started and I was excited that some 80people have put themselves in a place where God can work3. This coming week on Thursday Night starts Celebrate Recovery, which isspecifically designed to help people who are struggling with hurts, hang-ups,habits and addictions from eating to drugs and everything in between. Oftenaddictions are used to medicate our depression and emotions. Information isavailable at the Next Steps table – Jeff Janulis¨ So the first thing we need to do is position ourselves to involve God in our pain andonce we do that we are ready for the second lesson which is …IV. Seeing God’s purposes in your painA. Joseph saw God’s sovereignty and purposes in the terrible sin that his brotherscommitted against him.1. Listen to what happened when Joseph first revealed to his brothers who hewas. Read Gen 45:5-8a.B. Many people that I have met who have been seriously sinned against are stillseeing and interpreting their life through the lens of the sins against them.C. When God is working in our hearts, we begin to see life from a completely newperspective. We begin to see it from God’s viewpoint rather than our own. Webegin to understand that there is more going on in my life than what meets theeye. There is a larger story going on than that of which I am aware.• Illustrate the tapestry and my ability to see only a small piece of it and onlythe backside of it that looks very messy.D. Let me suggest two things that we know from Scripture that God is doing. Weknow that there are more, but these are two major ones that have applications toeach of our lives.1. Rom 8:28-29– conform us to the image of Jesus Christ.2. Two Cor 4:7-10– manifest the indwelling life of Christ through us.¨ Once we learn to experience God in the midst of our pain, which allows us to see God’s purpose in our pain, then the finallesson on turning a victim into a victor is …V. Forgiving the offenderA. Read Gen 50:15-21B. Forgiveness is essential to experiencing the deep healing within our souls. Yet itis such a struggle as 2 Cor 2:10-11 tells us that we need to forgive lest Satan takeadvantage of us because we are not ignorant of Satan’s schemes! Satan shots hispoison into our hearts through un-forgiveness and compounds the struggle!C. The hardest part of forgiveness for me is when the person who hurt me does notacknowledge they did it or does not apologize for what they have done. Ifsomeone apologizes normally, God gives me quick grace to forgive. But what dowe do with those who have not:1. As I wrestled with forgiving someone who hurt me and did not acknowledgeit or apologize to me. God spoke me through Jesus on the cross when Hesaid, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they are doing” –a) Jesus forgave without anyone asking for forgiveness oracknowledgement of their wrong doingb) I could no longer hold out for an apology or acknowledgement – Ineeded to forgive without that.2. Last week we talked about two thingsa) Room of grace – depend on Jesus for strength and next steps –(1) It is not a program to follow or a principle to learn but a person, theSavior, Jesus that gives us the ability and wisdom we need to walkthrough this!b) When we take a radical honest look in our hearts we see helplessness –bigger than me, smarter than I am smart and stronger than I am strong –(1) So I need to turn to Jesus to show me what I need to do next andgive me the strength to forgive!D. Let me tell my story and how God met me on the issue of unforgiveness that wascontrolling my heart towards those who hurt me!1. I was at a conference when the speaker told his story of his need to forgivesome people that deeply hurt him. Afterwards the host of the conferencechallenged us and gave us some time to examine our own hearts and the needto forgive.2. That time with the Lord at the end of that message ended up being four hourslong and my missing the entire afternoon session.E. As I met with God that afternoon, He placed in my heart an image that set me freeand I have been free now for over ten years. This is what God spoke to me aboutthat day:1. Need to hand over to God the “papers”, the ‘blood stained’ papers that haveall the offenses on it that this person has committed against me. That bloodstained list with “paid in full” written over it with Jesus’ blood. (Yes, theyare guilty as charged but Jesus paid for it in full.)2. Get the keys from God, go to the prison of my heart, and open up the prison. Then go back to the torture chamber of my heart where I have been mentallyand emotionally beating them up and making them pay for what they havedone to me, and set them free3. Next, I needed to go over to the judgment stand where I had been hurlingaccusations at them and set them free from my judgments and from thinkingevil about them.4. Thank God, for the relationship I did have with this person and the blessingthey were to me.5. Thank God, that He will use their wrong against me and all the pain that hasbrought for a good purpose in my life.6. Confess my sin of unforgiveness as being as great of a sin as what they didagainst me7. Resist the Devil from taking any further ground in my heart from myunforgiveness8. Pray a blessing for that person for their life.9. Do all of this in Jesus’ name trusting Him to enable me for this.E. Working through all these people, I had never forgiven and God genuinely settingme free took about six weeks of going through this process. With each person Ijournaled before the Lord about each different person or groups of people as toexactly what they did and what I did and how I respondedVI. ConclusionA. Turn to Psalm 1231. Note the contempt in his soul. Read 3-42. But that contempt was placed on him by others3. He is not saying it is his contempt for others that fills his soul but thecontempt that others placed on him. Modern day translation, “These peoplehave crapped on me and now I am full of their crap!”B. How do I get rid of this crap in my heart? How do I release this from my heart?1. Listen to 3a – God’s grace – only God can do this – it is a gift from God2. Read v1-23. The same way a servant looks to the hand of their master for direction andprovision we must look to God for direction and provision until He providesit!a) We need to continually look to, rely upon, call upon and wait for theLord until He gives us the grace to forgive and let it go!
The Coming World TribulationRevelation 6-18 September 8, 2019I. Introduction:A. This morning we are going to look at the period of time, that is yet to come, thatwill be the worst time this world will ever know!1. In the Revelation 6, it is called the great day of the wrath of Him who sits onthe Throne and the Lamb.2. Jesus called it the great tribulation and he said if those days were not cutshort, then not one person would have survived!B. This time actually starts in Chapter 4. Read v11. In Chapter 4 we get a vision of the throne room and the one who sits on it toremind us who is ruling and in charge of the things that are about to takeplace.2. Then chapter 5 we get a vision of Jesus to show us that He is the only onewho is worthy to open the scroll and to bring about the judgement upon theearth that is about to take place.C. Two weeks ago, we learned something of the nature of this time, and the fact thatit will last 7 years. Two weeks ago, we were introduced to some key players, primarily the antichrist and his activities during this time.• What we are going to see in Chapter 6-19 are a series of judgments.II. Judgments beginA. In Chapter 6 Jesus breaks the first seal of the scroll. Read v1 this first series ofjudgments, the seven seals – These judgments are:1. Seals:a) First Seal: White Horse—Conqueror by Antichristb) Second Seal: Red Horse —Warc) Third Seal: Black Horse—Famined) Fourth Seal: Pale Horse—Death 1/4th of the Earthe) Fifth Seal: Martyrs under the altarf) Sixth Seal: Earthquake, signs in the heavens2. Listen to the response of mankind to thisa) Read 6:15-17b) Note:(1) worldwide – Kings of the earth(2) They recognize this judgment is from God and that even thegreatest and strongest cannot stand!3. Note the last phrase in v17 “who will stand?” Chapter 7 is an interlude in theaction that answers that for us by telling us about the 144,000 Jews who willbe sealed and the great multitude from every nation will be saved!B. At the start of Chapter 8, the seventh seal was broken which introduced the seventrumpets and there was complete silence in heaven for half an hour. Read 8:1 –indicates just how solemn this series of judgments will be as there is an increasein intensity in this round of judgments!1. Trumpets:a) First Trumpet – Hail, fire, bloodb) Second Trumpet – Fiery mountain in sea, 1/3 of sea becomes bloodc) Third Trumpet –Star falls, 1/3 of rivers Bitterd) Fourth Trumpet – 1/3 of sun, 1/3 moon, 1/3 stars turn darke) Fifth Trumpet—Demon locust from the Abyss to torment mankindf) Sixth Trumpet—200 million man army kills 1/3rd of mankind2. Again note man’s response to all of this read 9:20-213. Then in Chapters 10-11 we see another interlude abouta) Chapter 10 - a little book that had seven peals of thunder in them but thecontents of these were sealed and John was not to write about themb) Then the two witnesses in Chapter 11 who for 3 ½ years will prophecyfor God, Read v3(1) The beast, Antichrist, will kill them. Read v7-8(2) Then listen to what happens. Read v10-134. Then the seventh trumpet sounds and Christ’s reign right here on earth isforeseen. This captures the heart of this whole book and the purpose ofJesus’ judgments! Listen to 11:15-19.C. Then as we saw last week in Chapters 12-14 there is another interlude to explainwho some of the main characters are in this tribulation and what their roles willbe!D. Then in Chapters 15-16, we move into the final judgments the sevenplagues/bowls.1. Read v1 – In these judgments we will see the completion of God’s wrathupon mankind! Cr 16:172. The Bowls of Wratha) First bowl - painful soresb) Second bowl - turns sea into bloodc) Third bowl rivers and springs - bloodd) Fourth bowl—sun scorches peoplee) Fifth bowl—plunges kingdom of the beast into darknessf) Sixth bowl—dries up the Euphrates for battle of Armageddong) Seventh bowl—judgment against Babylon3. Note men’s responses to these judgments. This time they not only refused torepent but took it a step further and blasphemed God! Read: 16:9, 11, 214. I want to take a moment to focus upon the last two bowls as both of them setup events yet to come in this program of Goda) The sixth bowl –(1) Read 16:12-14,16(2) God uses this bowl to prepare for the war that will take place inchapter 19 when Jesus returns and defeats the kings of the earth, the antichrist and the false prophet! We will look at bit more atthis next week!b) The seventh bowl(1) Read 16:17-21a(2) Scholars have debated for years as to whether this is a referencethe revived Roman Empire or a rebuilt Babylon! One thing I knowfor sure is that I do not know for sure which it is!(3) Here we see the final piece of God’s judgment that chapters 17-18expand for us and give the details of it.E. Then in chapters 17-18, we see the judgment of the Babylon the great harlot, herreligious and political systems during the tribulation along with city itself and itsgreat commerce!1. Chapter 17 refers to the judgment of the great harlot! Read v1-2, 5 inScripture harlotry and immorality are used to speak of spiritual unfaithfulnessto God.a) This chapter appears to be the destruction of a one world religion thatwill be set up at that timeb) Then at the end of this chapter, we see that God uses the antichrist toactually destroy this one world religion. Read 16-172. Then in chapter 18 Babylon is pictured as the commerce center of the world,it will be destroyed as well!a) Read v3a-b = Chapter 17 and now 3c = Chapter 18.b) And note the response of mankind to this – Read 18:15-19c) But note the saints are actually called to rejoice over this, listen – v20III. ConclusionA. That brings us up to Chapter 19 where we will see the return of Christ next week!B. But that chapter starts with heavens response to the destruction of Babylon. Readv1-6C. Then we see the marriage feast of the Lamb! Read 7-9D. If you are a believer in Jesus, you are blessed to be a part of this. If you are notmay I implore you today to come to Jesus now and avoid the great wrath of theLamb!
The Coming World LeaderVarious Passages; August 25, 2019I. Introduction:A. There is something new that I have seen happening on TV over the past numberof years. That is they gradually role out credits regarding who is who on the showover the first 15 minutes rather than all up front or at the end like before.1. Revelation is like that. The action begins but after the action goes on for a bitthen we are introduced to some of the key characters during the time of theTribulation.B. There are many important people in the Tribulation period who play a big part init:1. In Chapter 7 we learn of the 144,000 from Israel who will be special servantsof God during this time2. In chapter 11 we hear of the “two witnesses” – who for 3 ½ years willprophecy for God, be killed by the Beast and then raised again to life andcaught up into heaven.3. Chapter 12-13 John uses many figures to picture many key players duringthis time.a) The woman clothed with the sun represents Israelb) The red dragon with the 7 heads and 10 horns and on his head are 10diadems - presents Satanc) A male child who is born from the woman Israel is Jesus the Christd) We meet Michael, the archangel, who does war with Satan and throwshim down to earthe) The beast out of the sea who is the world dictator or as we call him theAntichristf) The beast out of the earth – the False Prophet who deceives people bypreforming miracles and pointing people to worship the Antichrist!C. This morning I want to focus upon the one whom I call the third main character inthis time. I call him the third because Dave Parro already introduced us to the toptwo during this time:1. God the Father on the throne reminding us that He is in control of thesethings happening on the earth during this time!2. Jesus Christ the only one worthy to perform the judgment we will read about.• But the 3rd character is the Beast, the Antichrist, the World Dictator …II. What we know of the Beast outside of Revelation 13A. We first hear of this Beast in chapter 11 when he kills the two witnesses. Read11:7-8B. At this time we really do not know who this beast is until we next hear of him infurther detail in chapter 131. Read 13:1-22. The big thing we learn about this Beast here is that Satan was the source, theone who gave the Beast his power, his throne and his authority.C. But the Bible tells us about this Beast, the Antichrist, and world dictator evenbefore we see him in Revelation 11 and 13 here. We need to turn back to Daniel7 where we first meet him.1. Daniel had a dream and vision that when all was said and done it alarmedhim and made his face grow pale.2. The Vision was of four beasts coming out of the seaa) A lion that represented Babylonb) A bear that represented Medo-Persiac) A leopard that represented Greeced) The reason we know they represented these kingdoms is both becausethe interpretation of the angel later in Daniel 7 and history proved themout as well3. Then for the first time we meet the Beast of Revelation 13. Read v7-8a) Now we are pushing heavily into things we will see in the book ofRevelation.b) But what is very important to note here is that the emphasis both inDaniel and in Revelation is not upon the whole Beast itself but upon onethat comes from the Beast. Actually, it has to do with the ten horns andthen another horn, a little one that came up among them.c) Let me repeat the emphasis of Daniel and Revelation is ultimately uponan individual that comes from an empire more than the empire itself.4. As the vision goes on, we see the Father, called the Ancient of Days, makinga verdict, a judgment against this little horn to take away his kingdom, destroy him and give the everlasting kingdom to the Son of Man, Jesus, andto his saints. Thus as we saw in the seven churches we will reign with Him.5. Let me read the end of this chapter where the angel clarifies all of this forDaniel and as you read it, you feel you could be reading a portion ofRevelation. Read v19-27D. Then in Daniel 9 we here of him again and this time we are given a clue as towhat kingdom he will come out of and represent.1. Read v262. Here it speaks of the Jesus’ death and the destruction of the city of Jerusalemand the temple. We see here that the people who do it are the people of theprince who is to come, the little horn we read of in Daniel 7. We know fromhistory that the Roman Empire was the one that destroyed Jerusalem and theTemple3. Now the next verse tells us about some of the activity of this leader, prince, and little horn. Read v27. Again reading this verse is like reading the bookof RevelationE. Again, listen to the book of Revelation in the book of Daniel regarding this man!Read 11:31-371. Jesus talks about this time of the Antichrist as being part of the greatTribulation. Read Matthew 24:15…21F. Turn to 2 Thessalonians 2 where we will see Daniel and Revelation fingerprintsall over this description of this man.1. Read 2:1-4 – this is the abomination of desolation, the key turning point ofthe Tribulation.2. We see a further description of his activity during this time a few versesdown along with the good news that drives the book of Revelation – Jesuswins! Read v8-113. Note the progression we have seen in the Antichrist’s relationship with Godfrom Daniel through here - boast against, claim to be equal to, magnifyabove, display himself as God• Now let’s turn back and see what we see of thisIII. Beast in Rev 13A. Remember the emphasis of Daniel and Revelation is ultimately upon anindividual that comes from an empire, more than the empire itself.B. You may say stop! How do you know this Beast is speaking of the one leadermore than the entire Roman Empire?1. Read v3 - It appears he mimics Jesus as one head of the beast is killed andresurrected so everyone is amazed and follows him. And as the narrativecontinues like Daniel, it focuses on the one individual rather than the entireempire.2. Also, turn to Revelation 17 where he tells us very directly, who this beast is.It is an individual, one of the kings and not the kingdom itself. Read 17:7-13.3. So bottom line I do think the Beast is the ultimate king and embodiment andkey representative of the revived Roman Empire! At times referring to theempire but primarily to the ultimate kingC. Now in Revelation we see some of the activity of this beast during this time.Turn to Revelation 131. Most of this has been heard already or hinted towards in other passages wehave seen already.2. We already seen in v2 he receives his power, kingship and authority fromSatan. Reread3. Verse 3-4 it appears he is killed and resurrected, thus amazing the wholeearth to follow after and worship him. Read v3-44. V5-6 we see his blasphemes which we have already heard about. Read 5-65. Then in v7, as we heard in Daniel, wars against the saints and overcomesthem and finally worldwide rule under him! Read v7D. Then we hear in the second half of this chapter about another beast who comes upout of the earth. His primary purpose is to be the prophet for the Antichrist anddeceive the world through miracles to get them to worship the beast!1. Read 13:11-152. And this False Prophet will be the one who oversees that everyone who wantsto buy anything has to have the mark of the Beast first! Read 13:16-17E. Later on in Chapter 16, we see that the Antichrist, the False Prophet and Satanhimself will work together with demonic powers to gather all the kings of theearth together for the great final war, the war of Har-magedon! Read 16:13-14,16F. But before that war we learn in Revelation 17:16 that God will actually use theAntichrist to overthrow the Great Harlot, which I believe is the one worldreligion.G. But as we learned in the book of Daniel – his doom is certain and we see that atthe return of Christ in Revelation 19 when He overcomes the armies gathered forwar against Him. Read 19:19-21IV. ConclusionA. You may be wondering what does all this have to do with me if I will not be herefor the Tribulation. Didn’t you tell us last week we would be raptured before thishappens?1. Actually a lot! Every believer in Jesus is in one of the major events in thisstory. Listen2. Listen to Rev 17 when he foretells of the Lamb defeating the Antichrist andthe 10 kings – what I want you to note is who will be with Jesus when Hedoes thisa) Read 17:14 – the called, chosen, and faithful.b) Who are they?3. Now let’s read 19:7-8 the marriage feast of the Lamb with the church and asI read note who is clothed in fine linen, bright and clean4. Now listen to the return of Jesus when He comes to defeat the Antichrist, theFalse Prophet and the kings of the earth. Note again who is with Hima) Read 19:11-15,(1) Note v14 – clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were followingHim on white horses(2) 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 adds that the angels will be with Him aswell!b) Read 19-215. So you had better believe this story and sermon have a whole bunch to dowith you!B. Pray

It Won’t Get Any Worse Than This – Intro to the TribulationRev 6-19, and Various Passages, August 18, 2019I. Introduction:A. We are making a major transition this morning in the book of Revelation as wemove from the letters from Jesus to the church to the prophetic section of thebook, which tells us about the future things that must take place!B. But before I go there today I want to start with what normally happens at the endof a sermon, application! What should be our response to these things beyondjust satisfying our curiosity regarding what is going to take place, in the future?1. We learned in the intro to this book that Jesus was writing the whole book ofRevelation to the seven churches in Asia Minor and not just chapters 2-3. Sothe primary application to this book is seen in those churches, which welearned that Jesus was encouraging them to persevere in holiness, allegianceto and worship of Jesus because the future reward outweighs the presentsuffering!a) Peter says the same thing as to how we should respond to some of thethings we will see in this section of Revelation.(1) Read 2 Peter 3:10-11,13(2) Bottom line do not live for this world because everything you areliving for and working for will be destroyed in the end. Instead,we should conduct our lives in a holy and godly way! With oureye on a better life and world ahead.2. Jesus made it clear in Matthew 24 that no one knows the day or the hour ofHis return. However, He did say we could know the season of His returnwhen we start to see the signs the Bible talks about falling in place.a) And anyone who knows the Bible well and has half an eye on currentevents is convinced we are in the season of Jesus’ return.b) Then Jesus gives us instructions how we can be faithful and wise in lightof knowing we are in the season but not knowing the specific day orhour.(1) Read 45-47(2) What has God put you in charge of? What is God’s will for you?Be faithful in carrying that out whether that is changing diapers orhelping someone come to know Jesus or grow in Him!3. We should be thinking about these things as we work our way through therest of the book of Revelation!• Next, as I introduce chapters 6-19 I want you to know that this time was talked aboutbefore in the Bible. The time of God pouring His wrath out on mankind anddisciplining the Jews at the same time. So this is a detailed description of a fulfilmentof what God already said must happen.II. The TribulationA. Maybe the best imagery we can get of just how difficult this time is going to be isthat pain a woman feels when giving birth to a child.1. Listen to how Jeremiah describes it. Read 30:3-7,11a) V3 – that is the future kingdom in Rev 20 – the very same land thatAbraham and the other fathers lived onb) V5-7,11 Listen to what they must go through firstc) He calls this the time of Jacob’s trouble2. Listen to how mankind responds to Jesus when He first starts to pour forthHis wrath in the seals! In Revelation 6.a) Turn and Read v15-17a3. Bottom line, this is going to be a very painful, difficult and scary time forthose who will live during this time. The worst time this world has ever seenor will ever see.a) Listen to what was told Daniel about this time: Read Daniel 12:1b) Listen to what Jesus said Matthew 24:21-22c) In chapter 7 when the question is answered as to who is able to stand thisday of God’s wrath read 6:17(1) This terrible time, it is called the Great Tribulation. Read 7:13-14B. So how long will this take place and when will it start? We know it is in thefuture so let’s turn to Daniel 9 to gain a bit more insight into this!1. Read v24 –a) A week means seven just like a dozen means 12 to us. It could be aweek of eggs = seven eggs or a dozen of eggs = 12 eggs. Here it is aweek of years or 7 years!b) God has decreed some things for His people, the Jewish people andJerusalem. That is why in Rev 4:1 he says, “I will show you what musttake place” these things have to happen, they must happen because Goddecreed them to happen.c) And part of what He decreed was to bring in everlasting righteousnessand seal up vision and prophecy. That is what the whole book ofRevelation is about the coming of God’s eternal righteous kingdom andthe fulfilment of everything He has prophesied!2. As I read v25, we have done the figuring on this before and it refers to Jesuscoming into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to present Himself as the Messiah, the king of Israel. Read 253. Then we read in v26 after this the Messiah will be cut off by means of aviolent death and then the city of Jerusalem will be destroyed by the peopleof the one who is the prince to come, the Antichrist.a) Read v26b) These were fulfilled in Jesus’ crucifixion and the destruction ofJerusalem in 70 ad by the Roman army under the leadership of GeneralTitus.4. So at this point 69 of the 70 weeks have been fulfilled, there is one week leftor 7 years left to complete God’s program and we hear about that in v27.Read 27aa) “He” is the prince referred to in v26, which we see in the book ofRevelation as the beast whom we call the Antichrist! We will talk moreabout him next week as we look at the main character in the Tribulation, the Antichristb) This tribulation will start when “he” makes firm and reestablises analready existing peace treaty with Israel for 7 years. Point out in v27c) This treaty will be for one week or seven years, so this Tribulation willlast seven yearsd) But in the middle of that week, 3 ½ years into this treaty he will stopsacrifices to God and desolate the temple by taking his place in thetemple and receiving worship as God. Read 27be) Then it finishes by saying this will continue until he is completelydestroyed, something we will see in Revelation 19. Read v27c• Welcome to picnic Sunday at MVC! At this point, I can send you all out and tell youto enjoy your hamburger and games! But it feels a bit heavy for that. So I want toencourage you with something as we finish today’s message. It called the ….III. RaptureA. Turn to and Read 1 Thessalonians 1:9-101. We already saw in Revelation that the people recognized that this time inRevelation 6-19 was the great day of God’s wrath.2. This verse speaks to those who have turned to the living God through Jesusthat they will be rescued from this future wrathB. Read 1 Thessalonians 5:8-91. He is speaking to believers here and the whole context of this section is theDay of the Lord, when He returns. So he is saying that God has not destinedus for this time of wrath but rather to obtain salvation through Jesus.2. This salvation he is referring to here is known as the Rapture of the Churchthat he talks about at the end of chapter 4. Read 4:15-18.C. This is the same thing we saw that Jesus promised the church in His letter toPhiladelphia.1. Read 3:10b-c2. Jesus promised them He would keep them “from” going through this hour oftesting that was going to come upon the whole world, which we learn of inRevelation 6-19.D. Do something for me – twinkle your eyes! Did that take long? That is howquickly the rapture of the church will take place, the very next thing that God hasalready scheduled for His future program. Read 1 Corinthians 15:51-52E. IF you are here today and you do not know Jesus as your savior, in prayer, admitto God your sin, and declare that there is nothing you can do to save yourself andyour trust is totally in Jesus, and then finally thank Him for forgiving your sinsand giving you new life!
The Lukewarm Useless ChurchRev 3:14-22 July 28, 2019I. Introduction:A. The struggle that the church in Laodicea had is probably the biggest struggle thatsuburban churches in North America face. The temptation to be self-sufficientbecause of our many resources rather than relying upon the All Sufficient One –Jesus!B. Laodicea was known for three things: it was a wealthy city with many bankingcenters, the soft black wool they produced and the eye salve that was producedthere to treat medical conditions for the eye.1. This city was so wealthy and self-sufficient that when a major earthquakedestroyed the city about 34 years before and Rome offered them money torebuild that they wrote a letter back to Nero telling him that they werewealthy and in need of nothing and that, they could rebuild it themselves.C. But they did have one glaring weakness: their water supply!1. Twelve miles to its east was Colossae. There refreshing cold water camedown from melted snow and rain from the mount that towered above it.These waters were valued for their ability to refresh and reinvigorate people2. Seven miles to its north was Hierapolis. It was famous for its hot springs, which were used, cure ailments.3. In Laodicea, the cold streams from the east and the hot water from the northmet which created a lukewarm water that was not either good for refreshmentor healing. It tasted awful and could make the people sick!• As I read this letter from Jesus to this church, note how he used their cultural realitiesto connect with them with what was going on in their church. Note how theirmaterial self-sufficiency had deceived them regardingII. Their spiritual condition!A. Read Revelation 3:14-17B. In v16 we see their problem was lukewarmness1. Many without considering the cultural context of their water situation wouldinterpret this something like this: I wish that you were either very passionateand on fire for Jesus or apathetic and cold toward Jesus rather than just beinga middle of the road Christian!2. In light of their cultural context, it appears to be referring to their usefulnessrather than passion level for Jesus. Like the lukewarm water in Laodicea, itwas not useful for healing and it was not useful for refreshment.3. The next verse tells us why they were useless! Note “because” at start of theverse explains the cause of their lukewarmness and uselessness. As I readnote there are two reasons – their self-sufficiency and their self-deceptionregarding their true spiritual condition.4. Read v17C. One of the great temptations for churches, for individuals, for countries that arewealthy or can easily get resources in their hands is to think that they really do notneed anything, they can pull it off, and they are self-sufficient.1. In Deuteronomy 8 God warns Israel that when they come into the land ofmilk and honey, the place where they will not lack anything, a place wherethey will be satisfied listen to his warning.a) Read Deut. 8:11-14 “Beware that you do not forget the Lord your God… when you have eaten and are satisfied… then your heart will becomeproud and you will forget the lord”2. In 1 Timothy 6:17-18 what Paul instructs wealthy believers to do• So the great temptation to wealthy churches, wealthy nations and even wealthyChristians is to be self-sufficient and deceived as to how that condition has put themin a dangerous place spiritually. Next Jesus tells them ofIII. The cureA. Read v18B. To buy is a figure here that means to acquire these things from Jesus. You do notget things from Jesus with money but rather by faith. You buy from Jesus withoutmoney but through faith and probably even more specifically through believingprayer.C. In v17 Jesus said you were materially rich but spiritually poor – therefore get thetrue spiritual riches from Me Read v18aD. In v17, they said they needed nothing, this city that made some of their wealthfrom the sale of black wool and wore luxurious clothes, but Jesus said you werenaked – therefore get spiritual garments to cover your shameful life. Read 18bE. In v17, Jesus refers to their spiritual blindness, right in the middle of the city thatwas known for their eye medication and v18 tells them they need to get the eyemedication He has so they can see clearly regarding their spiritual lives! Read18c• Then finally Jesus makes aIV. Call to the ChurchA. Listen to this call to the Church. I say church for three reasons1. We see in v14 it is written to the Church. The Church is made up ofbelievers gathered together and we learned earlier that the Church was Jesus’lampstand to bring light to the world. Unfortunately rather than bringinglight to the world, the world has permeating the Church!2. Secondly, I say this is written to a church of believers and not to a group ofunsaved religious people going to church is because of what verse 19 says.Reada) Daniel Wallace, a Greek scholar, says this about this Greek word love inthis verse “phileo” this word is never used in the New Testament of Godor Jesus loving unbelievers! Only the word “agape” is used in the NewTestament of God’s love for unbelievers!3. The third reason is that many people take v20 to refer to Jesus coming intothe life of an unsaved person to save them.a) Watch closely as I read “will come in to him” not “come into him”b) Again Dan Wallace says the author could have used the Greek word forinto so as to indicate the penetration into a person’s life but instead heused the Greek word that means coming towards or before someoneB. So all of that goes to say that Jesus here is making an invitation to this church tocome back into fellowship with Him, not to lost religious churchgoers to besaved!1. Read v202. So Jesus is simply summing up what He has said and wants them to turn fromtheir self-sufficiency and turn to Jesus and they will be back in a place offellowship and usefulness to Him.C. To those who respond to that invitation listen to what Jesus says to them! Readv21-22V. Let me finish with anVI. ApplicationA. I personally believe that the greatest expression that MVC can have that we arenot trusting in the many resources and wealth that are available to us here in thesouth suburbs of Chicago is prayer that comes from the heart of those who havethe very first character trait that Jesus said is true of a kingdom person – poor inspirit! A church who recognizes their spiritual poverty apart from Jesus!1. If you are one of those persons I would encourage you to join us atWednesday mornings as we, as a church together, declare to Jesus that whatwe are doing here at MVC is not about us or from us but about and fromHim!2. If we want to fulfil our function as a light to the suburban culture, we willdesperately need to call upon Jesus to move in and through us. Because welive among a people who think they are doing fine and need nothing when itcomes to spiritual things. But the reality is that they are poor, naked and blinddeeply in need of new life from Jesus Christ.

Revelation 2:18-29 July 7, 2019I. Introduction:A. As we move into the fourth of seven letters that Jesus wrote to these churches inAsia Minor around 1,925 years ago, we are seeing they are so relevant that hecould have written them just a few weeks ago to seven churches in the SouthwestSuburbs of Chicago.B. Turn in your Bibles to Rev 2:18. Read v18 - Thyatira1. Thyatira was the Chicago of Asia Minor as it was the manufacturing center.2. There were many trades in Thyatira: dyeing, garment making, pottery, brasswork, carpenters and tent makers,3. It was a strong “union city, they called them guilds; associations of workersof the same trades who came together. Much like our ironworkers or pipefitters unions.C. To understand this passage we need to understand a bit more how these guilds, these unions, these associations worked.1. Simply it was difficult there to make a living for your family without being amember of a guild.2. Each guild had its own patron deity, feasts, and seasonal festivities thatincluded sexual celebrations.3. And as a member in one of these trades guilds you were required toparticipate in the guild banquets where you had to eat and drink fooddedicated to that god and participate in the other festivities which were oftenpublic and sexual in nature4. So to be a member of these guilds put a Christian in a compromising positionD. Before I read the passage let me remind of whom Jezebel was.1. Jezebel was probably the most evil woman mentioned in the Old Testamentand she is known for influencing Israel away from the Lord and into idolworship with Baal!2. In the same way, a woman in this church was influencing them away fromloyalty to Jesus and into idol worship! Thus, Jesus called her Jezebel, probably not her actual name but she was just like her!E. So as I read this passage now, you have a better understanding of what they faced.Read v18-25. We will pick up the rest laterF. In verse 19 we see there is a lot this church is doing well Read v19,G. But in v 20-23. They have tolerated a false teacher who is spiritually influencingthe people away from Jesus and into idol worship. Read v201. It appears this church knows what she is teaching is spiritually dangerousstuff, but they haven’t distanced themselves from this and have allowed it tocontinue; putting up with it, allowing it to play itself out and negativelyimpacting others in the church so that they are led astray2. Then v21-23 says that both this teacher and her followers will be severelydisciplined by the Lord unless they repent!H. Now if you were here last week this sounds a lot like what we saw going on inPergamum. There, a group of people within the church held to the teachings ofthe Nicolaitans.1. The Nicolaitans felt believers had the freedom to get involved in theseidolatrous and immoral practices because of the external pressure put on themby the pagan culture they lived in and the necessity they had to live andprovide for their families2. In Pergamum there was a “group of people” there who held to those beliefs, but here in Thyatira it is notched up a bit and a more severe judgmentbecause here they allowed someone to “teach it and influence” others withtheir beliefs!3. Remember what we learned in James 3 – “Let not many of you becometeachers brethren knowing that as such we shall incur a stricter judgment!”I. I think there are a few other things we can learn about this church and Jesus’ heartas we compare a few other things with other churches!1. The pressure to compromise in Pergamum came more from the pressure ofemperor worship or pay the consequences. Here in Thyatira compromisecame more from the pressure that came from the business world to conformor pay the consequences.2. Also, the church in Thyatira was commended for their love in v19 butcriticized for tolerating immoral living and false teachers. But Ephesus is justthe opposite in that they were commended for not tolerating immoral livingand false teachers but were criticized for leaving behind their love.3. So what we can conclude from all these commendations and criticizing ofthese churches so far is that Jesus values all three; truth, holy living and lovefor each other and Him! We cannot sacrifice or devalue any of these threebut must hold all three of them in tension with one another!J. What an amazing reward for those who overcome. Read v25-291. This reign is yet in the future.2. It indicates a co-reigning with Jesus over the nations and this reign will be astern rule with a rod iron and breaking the nations.3. This cannot refer to the new heaven and earth because nothing and no oneevil will ever enter into there! It has to refer to the millennium wererighteousness reigns but sin and death will still be present.• Last week we spoke a little about the problem of immorality that comes from livingin that pagan culture. Today as we prepare for communion I just to take a fewmoments to address the issue ofII. IdolatryA. You are probably thinking how does this relate to us since there is no idol worshipgoing on in the evangelical churches in the United States.B. Actually we live in a very idolatrous culture that puts great pressure on us tocompromise our walk with Jesus, only1. Our idols are not statues of wood and iron but our idols are the possessions, pleasures and positions the world offers and it is constantly putting pressureon us to value these things above God.2. Our idols are in the heart and the way we relate to these things.C. Both Ephesians 5:5 and Col 3:5 call covetousness, idolatry.1. Power point of passages2. Covetousness is simply not being satisfied with what you have and wantingmore.3. So idolatry is not being satisfied with God and what he has given to us so welook for more in someone and/or something else!D. Tim Keller -says an idol is whatever you look at and say, in your heart of hearts,“if I have that, then I’ll feel my life has meaning, then I ‘ll know I have value, then I’ll feel significant and secure.”1. John Calvin said idolatry is to worship the gifts in place ofthe Giver Himself?”2. Pat Peglow says an idol is something or someone else that we put in the placewhere God is supposed to be in our lives. It is what or whom we love morethan God. It is what or whom we are trusting in more than God. It is what orwhom we build and center our lives around. It is what or whom we look tofulfill our deepest needs and greatest hopes. It is what or from whom we findour significance, identity and meaning in life!E. Martin Luther - Wrote that the Ten Commandments begin with a commandmentagainst idolatry. Why does this come first? Because we never break the othercommandments without breaking the first one. Why do we fail to love or keeppromises or live unselfishly?1. Of course, the general answer is “because we are weak and sinful,”2. But the specific answer in any actual circumstance is that there is somethingyou feel you must have to be happy, something that is more important to yourheart than god Himself. We would not lie unless we first had madesomething—human approval, reputation, power over others, financialadvantage—more important and valuable to our hearts than the grace andfavor of God.F. In Revelation 2 Jesus calls individuals within the church to repent of idolatry1. Paul, in 1 Corinthians 10:14 tells us to flee idolatry –2. John, in 1 John 5:21 tells us to be on constant watch over our hearts to not letidolatry creep into it.G. As communion comes your way today ask God to show you your own heart,1. There is a deep deception that accompanies idolatry so it is hard for us to seeapart from the spirit of God putting His finger on it! Listen Isaiah 44:10, 13-20!2. Are there any idols in your life that need to be confessed or fled from?3. We are all continually tempted to make temporal things into ultimate things. Are there any potential idols putting pressure on us we must be on guardagainst?III. Pass communion

Pergamum: CompromiseRev 2:12-17 June 30, 2019I. Introduction:A. Compromise can be a very good thing when it comes to our differences inrelationships but compromise when it comes to the extreme differences betweenJesus and the world can contaminate our relationship with Jesus.B. In this third church, Pergamum, there is pressure from both outside the church andinside the church to compromise.1. The great majority of this church remained faithful in a very difficultsatanically inspired culture, but there were some on the inside of the churchwho thought that compromise was ok, something that could become astumbling block to this church!C. As I read this passage so we can get a feel for them, watch for all of this. ReadRev 2:12-17• Let’s begin by looking at …II. The outward pressure upon the churchA. This is the part that Jesus commends the church for. Let me reread this: v13.B. Two times he refers to Satan in this verse. He says this city where they dwell, iswhere Satan’s throne is, this is where Satan dwells.1. And this church is commended by Jesus for their faithfulness to Him in themidst of this very anti Jesus culture!C. Why would Jesus say this city is where Satan’s throne is, where he dwells? Let’slearn a little bit about Pergamum and we will not only see why He calls it that butalso understand the great pressure these Christians were under and the cost oftheir faithfulness there.1. Pergamum was a large city and was the political center of Asia Minor. It wasthe Washington DC of Asia Minor!2. One ancient writer said Pergamum was “given to idolatry more than allAsia!” It had a series of pagan cults located there: Zeus, Athena, Dionysus,Asclepius3. They had a theater there that seated 10,000 people. The primary purpose ofthe theater was to make the city’s views the people’s views. Sounds likeHollywood doesn’t it?a) This theater was dedicated to Dionysus, the god of wine and orgy, andright next to the theater was the temple of Dionysus.b) Before the shows people would go to the temple and drink all the freewine they wanted.c) Then they would go to the play which often were performed in the nude.d) Then after the play they would binge and purge with raw meat until theygot in an ecstatic state then spend time with the temple prostitutes!4. And lastly but not least, Pergamum was the center of emperor worship inAsia Minor.a) Pergamum may have been the first place to deify kings upon their deathand this practice so deeply impressed the Caesars of Rome that it led tothe deification of their Caesars upon their death!b) And then Domitian, who was reigning at that time, was the first to startthe deification of Caesars while they were living.c) Emperor worship was more intense in Pergamum than any of the othersurrounding cities. The surrounding cities were required to worship theemperor just one time a year, but in Pergamum every day you had toworship the emperor.d) It was here it is believed that the practice began of burning incense to theCaesar in order to be able to buy and sell in the market. It was sopervasive that one could not buy or sell, get fire or water, or acquire meatwithout declaring Caesar was god. To refuse could mean death to thebeliever.5. It appears this is what probably happened to Antipas who is referred to in v13as God’s faithful witness who was killed there.a) Tradition says Antipas was supposedly roasted alive in a hollow life-sizebull, which had a bonfire under its belly, because he refused to renouncehis faith in Christ Jesus.D. This is the kind of external pressure that this church of believers lived under dayin and day out; and Jesus said they held fast to His name and did not deny thefaith even in the face of death!• Since Satan could not get this church to go down from the outside pressure heswitched his schemes toIII. Inward pressure upon the churchA. Jesus is going to use the story of Balaam who could not put a curse upon Israelfrom the outside, so he instructed Balak to put a stumbling block on Israel fromthe inside by getting them involved in idol worship and immorality. Read v14B. Now in verse 15 he says that in the “same way” the Nicolaitans are doing thesame, causing the church to stumble from the inside by getting them involved inthe local pagan culture of idolatry and immorality. Read v15C. The Nicolaitans were believed to be characterized by two things:1. First, synchronism – they felt that separation from pagan occult practices wasnot essential. So they mixed together different belief systems and practicedthem as one!2. False freedom - they were guilty of turning God’s liberty into license.Reckless grace – they insinuated that freedom in Christ granted them a blankcheck to sin.3. So as a result of their beliefs and practices they were mixing in idol worshipwith worship of the true God and the permission for immoral living whichoften accompanied their idol worship.4. They were people who compromised with both the pagan religions andungodly culture around them!D. Note that it says “some” in v15. The great majority of this church was faithful toJesus in the midst of external and internal pressure to conform to this ungodly andimmoral culture.1. But there were some who were holding onto the teachings of theseNicolaitans.E. It appears that the problem with this church is that they welcomed them into theirchurch where they could influence other believers and now that they were therethey were not dealing with them. Jesus called the church to repent, wake up towhat is going on in your church and deal with this internal cancer or I will comemyself and deal with it! Read v16F. And in v17 he states the reward that is theirs if they do deal with it!1. It appears that the hidden manna refers to Christ as the bread of heaven tonourish and strengthen their souls in the midst of this tough days2. The white stone with a new name written on it refers to the future kingdomwhen Jesus will give them a name that is reflective of their unique character• SoIV. What does this letter have to say to us?A. We live in a time:1. A time when our culture is very ungodly and immoral! Yes, under theinfluence of Satan as he is called “the god of this world.”a) There are all kinds of false religions, cults and eastern religions righthere on our doorsteps.b) And as Ben Carson says “we’ve distorted things to the point wherepeople believe that anyone who opposes mothers killing their babies iswaging war on women. How can we be so foolish to believe such athing? One must be able to recognize the depravity to which we havesunken as a society when valuing a baby’s life is frowned upon!”(1) And there are few states that buy into this deeper than the one welive in.2. A time where even in the church some who mix together biblical Christianitywith new age beliefs and practices and even some with ideas from easternreligions.3. A time where many Christians think it is no big deal to be involved inpremarital sex or live together – I mean “everybody is doing it aren’t they –what is the big deal?a) They are right – in our culture and through fleshly eyes it is no big deal!b) But in God’s eyes sin, any sin, was a big enough deal to send his ownson to a bloody and torturous cross. A big enough deal for someone tospend an eternity in the lake of fire.c) It is true – as high as the heavens are above the earth so are God’sthoughts above ours!4. A time where many churches are buying into, accepting and even promotingsome of the immoral sexual practices of our culture. Where other churchessay to churches like MVC that “we are unloving and un-Christ-like if we donot agree with and accept the life style of the LGBTQ community!”a) Like Jesus said to Ephesus we must be a church that holds to the tensionof love and truth without sacrificing either one!5. Need I say more? – We live in a time that is much like the time when thechurch in Pergamum lived! The only difference is that at this time we are notunder the pressure and persecution that they were for not submitting to theways of the pagan culture.6. I think we are more deceived into compromise than pressured into it!B. Satan is the god of this world!1. The world has its own program/system. This system has its own ways, pattern or mold, basic principles, standards, philosophy, wisdom, viewpointand loves.2. It is a system which is programmed to constantly put pressure on people tosqueeze them into its mold.3. Satan is the personal agent behind our external enemy called the world whichhas all the goodies that attract our internal enemy our flesh!C. In closing I want to ask you the questions I saw in an article I read:1. Can you think of any area of your life where you have allowed yourself to becompromised by the world? If so, can you see where that compromise hashindered the power of God from operating in your life?D. Pray
Ephesus Church: Truth and LoveRev 2:1-7 June 16, 2019I. Introduction:A. Marriage Monday for Men -B. I have always been challenged by this statement by John Stott “Truth without loveis too hard and love without truth is too soft."1. It has been a constant check on my own heart to make sure mycommunication of truth is tempered with love and my love has backbonewith truth!2. We will see today in Jesus’ letter to the Ephesians Church that His heart is forboth truth and love and not one at the expense of the other!C. As we move into the section of the book of Revelation that contains Jesus’ lettersto the seven churches in Asia, we will learn what Jesus is most concerned aboutwith church life!1. The truth is that not everything that goes on in the church is of equalimportance, and you and I may differ on what we think is important but wewill find out in these letter exactly what is important to Jesus.D. Now listen to how Jesus begins His letter to the Church in Ephesus.1. Read 2:12. We learned in 1:20 that:a) Stars = the angels of the church = messengers = most likely humanmessengers, today we would call them the pastors of the church, especially teaching pastorsb) The lampstands are the churches themselves and give us an indication ofthe churches purpose to be God’s light in this dark world!3. The fact that He holds the messengers in His right hand indicates that He hasa firm grip on these pastors by His power and authority.4. The fact that He walks among the lampstand, the church, indicates that Hispresence and activity are right there in the church.• So bottom line Jesus’ presence and power are in operation in His church. Both theEphesus Church and MVC!II. The Church in EphesusA. The Church at Ephesus which at the time of Revelation was in existence for justover 40 years1. Ephesus was the largest city in Asia Minor and had temples there both for theImperial Cult of Rome and the Greek goddess Artemis.2. In Acts, we learn from Paul’s ministry of the word in Ephesus for two yearsthat the gospel spread throughout all of Asia Minor.3. God’s word was growing mightily and prevailing to the point that believerswere turning from pagan religions, burning their old religious books andturning from idol worship to such a degree it impacted the business of thesilversmiths, which brought about a big disturbance from an angry mob!4. So the ongoing threat of persecution was always a reality for this church!B. And false teaching and false doctrine were real threats to them1. In Acts Paul warned the Ephesian elders to be on guard for themselves andall the flock because there would be negative influences and false teachingcoming from both outside and inside the church.2. In 1 Timothy, we learn Paul left Timothy in Ephesus so that he might instructcertain men not to teach strange things.C. Now listen to how Jesus commends/praises this church.1. Read v2-32. They did many things for Jesus’ sake (deeds v2) For Jesus’ sake they haveworked hard and persevered under these pressures and have not tolerated evilimmoral men or false teaching. In none of this have they grown weary butthey keep on whole-heartedly serving Jesus.3. This sounds a lot like MVC – For nearly 75 years now MVC has done manythings for Jesus, worked hard, persevered, disciplined immoral members andproclaimed God’s Word!4. Side Bar – In the midst of false teachers from within and without for 40 someyears they have stayed faithful to God’s truth! Truth is important andessential to Jesus and His Churcha) I believe they were faithful here because of the instructions that Paulgave to their pastor, Timothy. By practicing these, they were able toremain faithful to God’s truth!(1) 2 Tim 2:2 a strong discipleship movement(a) Finding faithful men and women who are able to teachothers and entrusting God’s truth to them. Thencommissioning them to do that with others. Simply goingdeep with a few and multiplying from there.(b) That should be an encouragement to MVC as that is exactlywhat we are seeking to do(2) 2 Tim 4:1-4. A strong preaching ministry. One that is not drivenby the desires of the people but by the word of God truthfully andpractically taught in such a way as to instruct and encourage aswell as convict of sin and warn of the consequences of such a life.b) MVC must focus on these two means for the next 75 years if we want tosee God’s truth, to be at the center of MVC ministry! Something thatJesus considers not just important but essential!D. So they had many good things going on in this church but listen to one bigconcern that Jesus had for them.1. Read v42. Their love! It does not say whether that is love for one another or for God. Ithink God left it that way because it applies to both!3. John in 1 John 4:20 says “… the one who does not love his brother, whom hehas seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen. Our love for God andeach other are intimately tied together!4. Love for each other can easily be overlooked when we get so involved indoing so many good things for the Lord.a) I have seen many people so busy serving that they are getting angry witheveryone else because they are not helping or doing as much as they are.(1) Then the temptation of every person involved in ministry is to usepeople to build our ministries rather than using our ministries tobuild people.(2) Often people become interruptions to our ministries rather thaninterrupting our ministries to serve peopleb) I have seen too many theologically minded people who will ram peopleover because they disagree with them about Bible interpretations.(1) They have a sharp theological mind but it is totally divorced fromrelational love for people.(2) Other Christians who disagree with them have become the enemy!5. Our love for God can be totally left behind as we fall in love with theministry, keeping busy with God’s work, loving the significance andaffirmation we can gain from doing something to help someone else.a) Read 2 Corinthians 11:2-3b) Have you lost the simple and pure devotion to Jesus?c) We can love the Bible and the truths that help us live better withoutloving Godd) We can love ministry without loving God(1) We can fall in love with the mission and vision, the strategy andgoals, and the work with them becoming realities and loving thatmore than Jesus.(2) Like a good pastor friend of mine that was confronted by his wifefor having an affair with the ministry and leaving her behind.e) It is no different from the husband and wife that are busy keeping thehouse up, going to all the events on their calendars, caring for the kidsand love doing it but the reality is that their love for one another has lostits fire. It is not that they do not like each other but rather they have lostthe fire and passion for each other, which should be at the heart ofeverything they do!E. There is a tension that the Bible teaches and Jesus is calling his church to –remember, "truth without love is too hard and love without truth is too soft buttruth and love in tension is just right.”1. Generationally that older generation falls a bit heavy on the truth side and theyounger generation falls a bit heavy on the love side.2. Listen to Beth Moore’s strong words to the younger generation at the PassionConference Video Link3. MVC will rise or fall based upon whether we will sacrifice one for the other!May God give both the younger and older generations the courage to live thetension of both truth and love!F. Next Jesus tells them what they must do to correct this. Read 5a-c1. Remember – regain their bearing of what it is supposed to be like byremembering when they first began this journey being in love with Jesus andministering out of love for Him.2. Repent – Be so convicted in your heart and mind of this sin that you arebroken to your core so that the direction of your ministry turns around!3. Do - the things you did at first when you were deeply in love with Jesus andpeople!G. If we do not the consequences are big1. Read 5d-e2. The effectiveness of MVC as a lighthouse for Jesus will go out.3. Either we will end up eventually closing the door and selling the building toHome Depot or we will be a church that continues with business as usual butwith no eternal value or effectiveness.H. But on the other hand if MVC has the wisdom and courage to be a church thatholds the tension of truth and love for years to come listen to the reward!1. Read v7.2. The privilege to eat of the tree of life in the future eternal kingdom of God!I. Pray
Garden of The Mind || The Audio LogsAL014 || Changing DirectionJune 16th 2019I had some inspiration to try something different, and I attempted to do it this week. However, it did not go as plan but I believe I got some good content from it. I greatly under estimated how long it would take me to do it and. I started to late into the night. Really, I just need to stay steadfast and not worry about how quick the Garden is growing. Just begin to enjoy its blooms and the opportunity it has given me to play in the dirt. Also, I touch a little bit more on the mountain metaphor, because it has come time to climb the mountain now that it has momentum. That is the beginning of the hard work.“If you seek tranquility, do less. Or in turn, do what’s essential. Do less, better. Because most of what we do or say is not essential. If you can eliminate it, you’ll have more tranquility. But to eliminate the necessary actions, we need to eliminate unnecessary assumptions as well.” — Marcus AureliusStay tuned as the soil has accepted these new roots and will soon unlock its secrets…Stay #TrueSteadfastHumble
Summary for June 16, 2019I don’t know about you all, but I so enjoy doing these talks with Bill. We make a plan, and inevitably more comes up than we have planned for. We only just began to scratch the surface of so many things: destiny and fate, the language of faith, disrupting old paradigms in favor of an evolving faith...what a ride! We both read from sources like Richard Rohr’s daily meditations, Progressing Spirit, Ilia Delio’s Omega Center, Brian Swimme, and Michael Morwood to open our hearts and minds to yours. In the mystical tradition, real religion is about making one out of two. In cosmology, the universe is viewed as a “differentiated singularity.” Ilia Delio writes: “On the whole we are not conscious of evolution; we do not live as creatures in evolution, and we do not act as if our choices can influence the direction of evolution . . . In my view, evolution is the story, the meta narrative of our age . . . When the mind can engage reality as a question rather than imposing prefabricated answers on it, then one can participate creatively in evolution.” The questions at the heart of our talk is what is the sacred mystery trying to express through you? And what old paradigms do you need to examine and transform in order to make way for this to occur?Thank you so much for joining us. We are so grateful for your in person and virtual presence. OVERCOMERS: Revelation in One SermonRev 1:1-22:21 May 26, 2019I. Introduction:A. Today I have a large assignment – Preach from a PANORAMIC view theWHOLE book of Revelation in ONE MESSAGE.B. To do this you need to know where I am COMING FROM and WHY. Thereare PRIMARY 4 WAYS people interpret the book of Revelation.1. Preterist - Revelation is like an ANCIENT NEWSPAPER.Events already fulfilled in the first century AD.2. Idealist - see Revelation as a non-historical and non-prophetic allegoricalDRAMA about the struggle between the kingdom of God and the powers ofevil.3. Historica) Revelation is like a HISTORY TEXTBOOK understanding the events inRevelation as symbolic descriptions of historical events throughoutCHURCH history.b) Spiritualize the Covenant Promises to be fulfilled by Church.4. Futurista) Revelation is like a ROAD MAP that describes the end of time and theyears leading immediately to the end, things yet to occur.b) Take Covenant Promises Literally to be fulfilled by Israelc) Church Participates in Promises through the seed of Abraham and David– Jesus Christ.C. I PERSONALLY HOLD the 4th view Futurist, which some callDISPENSATIONAL. This is the same view MVC has held for over the last 60years and the same view that MOODY BIBLE INSTITUTE teaches. Let megive you just 3 REASONS WHY I interpret the book this way.1. 1st as I said last week the ROOTS of all prophecy are found in the Covenantpromises that God made to Israel. And since the covenant promises andmany prophecies have ALREADY BEGUN to be FULFILLEDLITERALLY it is reasonable to EXPECT THE REST of them to beFULFILLED LITERALLY.2. 2ndly Because of Israel DISOBEDIENCE and REJECTION of Jesus asMessiah – many say that the Church now REPLACES Israel as the NewIsrael and thus SPIRITUALIZE many prophecies as being symbolicallyfulfilled by the Church. They believe that ISRAEL FORFEITED their rightto these promises.a) Not only does Romans 11 indicate that God has a FUTURE PLAN forIsrael but Listen to what God says about this in Ezek 36 right before Hetalks about GATHERING Israel from the nationS and BRINGINGTHEM BACK into their own land in the FUTURE!(1) at a TIME WHEN:(a) The land will be FRUITFUL and BLESSED(b) it will be like the GARDEN OF EDEN again(c) a time when it will be FORTIFIED, and at PEACEb) As I read note that God does not ACT or REFRAIN from actingDEPENDING upon Israel’s good or bad PERFORMANCE but toVINDICATE THE HOLINESS of His great NAME.(1) Read Ezek 36:22-24(2) Then he talks about the NEW COVENANT of forgiveness and anew Heart with the Holy Spirit inside of it(3) Read V28 – My friends this is EXACTLY what we see happeningin the book of REVELATION after JESUS RETURNS3. Finally The CHARACTER of God – His HESED = His FAITHFULNESSto keep His Covenants and GRACE. – If God could TURN HIS BACK onIsrael when He made COVENANT PROMISES to Israel and BREAK HISPROMISES with them what KEEPS HIM FROM DOING THAT to theChurch today.a) I will tell you what KEEPS Him from not BREAKING HIS PROMISESwith ISRAEL or the CHURCH – it is His FAITHFULNESS andGRACE. His HESED – His OWN LOVE to FULFILL His covenantPromises• So now let’s jump intoII. The Book of Revelation in One MessageA. The Basic OUTLINE of the Book is simple: Read Rev 1:191. Things Have SEEN – Ch 1 (VISION of the Glory of Jesus)2. Things That ARE – Ch 2-3 (7 CHURCHES)3. Things Which WILL TAKE PLACE AFTER These Things – Ch 4-22a) TRIBULATION 6-18b) RETURN of Jesus in Glory 19c) KINGDOM of God 20-22B. We learned last week:1. Theme – The RETURN of Jesus Christ in GLORY as Judge and King todestroy EVIL and set up His KINGDOM2. Purpose – To encourage the 7 Churches to persevere in HOLINESS,ALLEGIANCE to and WORSHIP of Jesus.C. Let me show you HOW I came up with those, let’s start with the THEME!1. We saw in verse 1 the book STARTS with these words “The Revelation ofJesus Christ” – we saw the book is PRIMARILY ABOUT Jesus.2. Now look at v7 where his FIRST WORDS after he finishes hisINTRODUCTORY words! Reada) Now look at the END of the book as he COMPLETES THE HEART ofthe book and TRANSITIONS to his closing words! Read 22:7b) The HEART OF THIS BOOK is about Jesus COMING BACK, theRETURN of Jesus Christ.3. Now turn to 11:17-18 it reveals to us the heart of WHY HE IS COMINGBACK. As he starts with the WORSHIP of the 24 elders then moves to theRESPONSE of the nations. Read4. Thus the THEME of this book –The RETURN of Jesus Christ in GLORYas Judge and King to destroy EVIL and set up His KINGDOMD. PURPOSE – To ENCOURAGE the 7 Churches to PERSEVERE in Holiness,Allegiance to and Worship of Jesus.1. Read 1:3 Heed2. We must REMEMBER the book was WRITTEN TO the 7 Church whocurrently were experiencing external persecution from Rome and internalstruggles of apostasy and immoral behavior3. Letters to the 7 Churchesa) The letters to each Church are STRUCTURED basically the SAME –Essentially it is(1) VISION of Jesus in His glory(2) COMPLIMENTS about what they are doing well(3) CRITICISM of where they are coming up short(4) EXHORTATION to do something or a WARNING(5) PROMISE to OVERCOMERS4. Note that each one of these PROMISES has something to do with aREWARD in the future KINGDOM!a) V2:7 – Eat of the TREE OF LIFE in Paradiseb) V2:11 – Will not be HURT by the SECOND DEATHc) Cr 21:7 – This is DURING the time of the FUTURE KINGDOM ofGod5. This is important because God is encouraging CHURCHES toPERSEVERE and live HOLY LIVES with full ALLEGIANCE to Godbecause it is WORTH it, the eternal REWARD FAR OUTWEIGHS thecurrent STRUGGLE and pain.6. PAUL would have said it this way Read 2 Cor 4:17-18E. Then we move to the 3rd section of the book and the LARGEST section – “thethings that TAKE PLACE AFTER these things.” Read 4:11. In Chapter 4 we get a vision of the THRONE Room and the one who SITSON it followed by WORSHIP of Him.a) Read v2b) PURPOSE of this is to REMIND them who is on the THRONE orsimply who is RULING and in CHARGE of these MESSY things goingon earth!2. Then Chapter 5 we get a vision of Jesus as the one who is WORTHY TOOPEN the scroll and WORSHIP of Him and the Father.a) Read v1-5b) PURPOSE is to show that Jesus is the ONLY ONE WORTHY to bringabout the JUDGEMENT upon the earth that is about to take place.3. We have MODELED for us from this section and the 7 interludes ofWORSHIP that take place in chapters 6-19 during the severe judgmentupon the world that the proper and natural and HEAVENLY RESPONSEto Jesus as Judge and King is WORSHIP!4. And they are there to REMIND us that Jesus is the BACKDROP by whichwe should READ ALL OF THESE EVENTS. Reminder it is about JesusPRIMARILY and the events SECONDARILY!F. Then in Chapter 6 the JUDGMENTS BEGIN as Jesus BREAKS the first SEALof the scroll. Read v11. What we are going to see in Chapter 6-19 are a series of JUDGMENTS.2. But there are BREAKS IN THE CHRONOLOGY of these judgments byINTERLUDES that are like side bars that explain a bit more to us what isgoing on likea) Key CHARACTERS and INSTITUTIONS,b) And 7 interludes of WORSHIP that show us the PROPER RESPONSEof Heaven and God’s people to these timesc) and then finally we see the RESPONSES OF MAN on earth at thetime of these judgments!G. So the 1st series of JUDGMENTS are the seven SEALS – These judgments are:1. Seals:a) First Seal: White Horse—Conqueror by AntiChristb) Second Seal: Red Horse —Warc) Third Seal: Black Horse—Famined) Fourth Seal: Pale Horse—Death 1/4th of the Earthe) Fifth Seal: Martyrs under the altarf) Sixth Seal: Earthquake, signs in the Heavens2. Listen to the RESPONSE OF MANKIND to this – read 6:15-173. Note the Last Phrase in v17 “WHO WILL STAND?”Chapter 7 is an interlude in the action that answers that for us telling usabout the 144,000 JEWS who will be SEALED and the great MULTITUDEfrom every nation that will be SAVED!4. Then the multitude breaks into WORSHIP declaring that SALVATIONbelongs to God.H. At the start of Chapter 8 the 7TH SEAL was BROKEN which INTRODUCED the7 TRUMPETS and their was complete silence in heaven for ½ hour.1. Then in Ch 10-11 we see another INTERLUDE abouta) Ch 10 - a LITTLE BOOK that had 7 PEALS OF THUNDER in thembut the content of these were SEALED and John was not to write aboutthemb) Then the 2 WITNESSES in Ch 11 who for 3 ½ years will PROPHECYfor God, be KILLED by the beast and then RAISED again to life andCAUGHT up into heaven. Read v134. Then the 7TH TRUMPET Sounds and Christ’s REIGN right here onEARTH is foreseen. Listen to 11:15-19.I. Then in Chapters 12-14 there is another interlude to explain who some of themain characters are in this tribulation and what their roles are! We learn hereabout:1. The WOMAN – Israel2. The Red DRAGON – Satan3. The MALE CHILD – Christ4. Michael and his angels WAR with Satan and his angels.5. The BEAST from the SEA – AntiChrist6. The BEAST from the EARTH – False Prophet7. The GREAT REAPER – JesusJ. Then in Chapters 15-16 we move into the FINAL JUDGMENTS the sevenPlagues/Bowls. Read v11. Then in v3 we see WORSHIP again where they declare just how GREAT,MARVELOUS, RIGHTEOUS and TRUE are His judgments2. The Bowls of WRATHa) 1st Bowl Painful SORESb) 2nd Bowl Turns sea into BLOODc) 3rd Bowl rivers and springs - BLOODd) 4th Bowl—Sun SCORCHES peoplee) 5th Bowl—Plunges kingdom of the beast into DARKNESSf) 6th Bowl—DRIES UP the Euphrates for Battle of Armageddong) 7th Bowl—Judgment against BABYLON3. Note MAN’S RESPONSES to these judgments. Read: 16:9, 11, 21K. Then in Chapters 17-18 we see the judgment of the Babylon the GREATHARLOT her RELIGIOUS and POLITICAL systems during the Tribulationalong with CITY itself and its great COMMERCE!1. And note the RESPONSE OF MANKIND to this – Read 18:17-192. But the SAINTS are actually called to REJOICE over this, listen – v20L. Then we start Chapter 19 with a great MULTITUDE WORSHIPPING God1. Read v1-22. Then we see the MARRIAGE FEAST of the Lamb with His bride, theChurch3. Then the Lord appearing as a WARRIOR for His FINAL ACT of judgmentas He RETURNS with the saints and the angels to DEFEAT the anti-Christand all his allies who have gathered together for WAR AGAINST theLamb.M. Then finally we move into the KINGDOM of God in TWO FORMS1. 1st in Chapter 20 – 1000 YEARS here on earth while Satan is BOUND thenat the end of that time he is RELEASED and he deceives the nations into onemore LARGE WAR against the Saints and he is DEFEATED and throwninto the LAKE OF FIRE where the ANTI-CHRIST and the FALSEPROPHET already are.a) This is followed by the GREAT WHITE THRONE Judgment whereeveryone whose name was not written in the BOOK OF LIFE will bethrown into the LAKE OF FIRE2. In Ch 21-22 we see the ETERNAL ASPECT of the Kingdom of God as aNEW Heaven and earth is created and God DWELLS right here on this newearth WITH His people.a) Read 21:3-4, 7b) Read 22:1-53. This is the CONCLUSION of God’s STORY and the FULFILLMENT of allHis PROMISES!4. These 2 aspects of the Kingdom are ESSENTIAL because it will REQUIREBOTH a 1000 year earthly kingdom and an eternal Kingdom with a newheaven and earth to FULFILL all the promises and prophecies made by thePROPHETS in the Old Testament and the promises in the New!N. And in the final section we see Jesus again PROCLAIMING that He isCOMING Quickly and that His REWARD is with Him.1. The CRY and PRAYER of the Church, the Spirit and John who wrote thisbook was “COME”2. And the INVITATION to those who are thirsty is “COME”3. And all of this was written for them, for the Church for you and me who livein a CULTURE THAT IS NOT FAVORABLE towards Christianity,(Rome/United States) to persevere in HOLINESS, ALLEGIANCE to andWORSHIP of Jesus because Jesus Christ is RETURNING in GLORY asJudge and King to destroy EVIL and set up His KINGDOMO. Introduction to Book of RevelationRevelation 1:1-4 May 19, 2019I. Introduction:A. When I think that I am starting a series this morning on the book of Revelationthere are two polar opposite thoughts in my mind:1. First, the excitement of learning together each week from this very amazingand important book2. Secondly, is terror thinking “Am I nuts thinking I can preach through thisvery amazing and important book”B. Let’s jump right in as this week I want to introduce you to the book, then nextweek I want to preach through the whole book in one message.• Turn to Rev 1:1 – the last book of the Bible.II. Introduction to BookA. Read 1:1a- Note this is not the book of Revelations but the Revelation! Thatmeans to properly understand this book we need to look at the book as one wholerevelation rather than a series of different revelations throughout the book.1. Read 1:1a-b – The revelation is concerning Jesus Christ.2. Now listen to 1c.3. To get our heads on straight about this book we need to understand right fromthe beginning that the book is foremost about Jesus and the future eventsreveal something to us about Jesus. This will become even clearer as we seethe book as a whole next week.4. But so many people miss God’s intended purpose of this book because theyare so intrigued by the end time prophecies that they miss that theseprophecies are revealing something to us about Jesus!B. We see in this verse that God gave this Revelation to Jesus, who gave it to anangel, who gave it to John to show God’s bondservants! Read 1b and d.C. In v2, we see what John will be doing in this book. Read v 21. Testified – That means that a person with direct knowledge of somethingprovides information about what they know, heard and saw!2. He is going to provide for us two things he has direct knowledge of:a) The Word of God – He is not referring to the Bible here but the idea of aprophetic utterance from God just like it is used in the Old Testamentwhen God spoke inspired utterances to prophets.b) Secondly, the testimony of Jesus – this is the content about what helearned about Jesus through the things that the angel showed him.3. This reinforces again that this book is primarily about the revelation of Jesusnot the end time events. Actually, the end time events reveal Jesus to us andit may be said that at the heart of all prophecies, they point to Jesus; they areteaching us something about Jesus!a) Read Rev 19:10db) Robert Deffinbaugh says this – Christ is preeminent in prophecy. Thingsto come are incidental because all of those things which are to comeoccur at the power, the authority and the dispatch of Jesus ChristHimself!1. Some are going to be troubled by what they learn about Jesus in this book.a) If you like the picture of Jesus we get in the gospels, a true picture ofJesus as the sacrificial lamb, the one who is closer to us than a brother, the one whom I can put my head on his shoulder at the beach as we listento Christian music together about God’s love for me, you might be a bittrouble by the revelation of Jesus in this bookb) The same John who put his head on Jesus’ chest at the last supper is thesame one who wrote this book and this time when he saw Jesus in Hisglory he fell at His feet like a dead man.c) In this book, we will see Jesus as a judge pouring out His wrath upon allof mankind who has rejected Him. We will see Him as a warrior whosheds a lot of blood, we will see Him as a king who rules the nationswith a rod of iron and we will see Him as our shepherd who protects, blesses and rewards His followers!B. Look at the blessing that is promised to us as we go through this book. Read v3.1. The key to the blessing is not just reading or hearing this book but heeding it,keeping what it teaches us.2. So that raised a question for me – what is there to heed in this book, as it justseemed to be a book about a lot of information about Jesus and end times.C. Actually, the next verse gives us some insight into this question. Read v4a,111. This book was written to the seven churches in Asia. Note the whole bookwas written to them not just chapters 2 & 3.2. When we learn a bit more about these churches, we will understand a bitmore of what we are to heed and why this book was written.3. This book was written approximately in 95-96AD during the reign of theRoman emperor Domitian.4. His reign was chiefly known as a reign of terrora) It is alleged that he insisted on his own divinity, demanded worship ofhimself and persecuted Christians who did not participate in the imperialreligion.5. And while they were suffering persecution from the outside, they werestruggling on the inside with their own purity and loyalty to Jesus.D. So when you put all of this together this is my stated theme and purpose of thebook:1. Theme – The return of Jesus Christ in glory as judge and king to destroy eviland set up His kingdom2. Purpose – To encourage the seven churches to persevere in holiness, allegiance to and worship of Jesus.3. Thus, the “heeding” in this book is made up of the exhortations to the sevenchurches and visions and interludes of worship throughout the book.4. Again, we will see this a bit clearer next week in one message of the wholebook at once.• There areII. Two other key purposes for the book of Revelation!A. The consummation of all the Biblical prophecies are found in the book ofRevelation.1. Apart from the book of Revelation, we find no complete propheticfulfillment.a) Listen to 10:7b) Read 1 Peter 1:10-11 – The two major categories of prophecies can bebroken down into prophecies about Jesus’ suffering or prophecies aboutJesus’ glory!(1) The book of Revelation is prophecies about His glory!(2) In His first coming, He fulfilled the prophecies about Hissufferings.c) Turn to Acts 3:(1) Read 17-19 – suffering prophecies fulfilled - first coming(2) Read 20-21 – When Jesus returns He will fulfill the propheciesabout the restoration of all things. Thus the book of Revelation2. The major categories of prophecies are found in the covenants that God madewith Israel, the particular prophecies in the Old Testament find their roots inthese covenant promises. We learn in Revelation about the fulfilment ofthese covenant promises. We see from:a) Abraham – a land forever, God being their God foreverb) Deuteronomy – restoration to the land, Israel’s enemies being judged andthe nation receiving full blessingsc) David – a forever king, reigning forever over a forever kingdomd) New Covenant – Israel being saved and abiding blessings in the land.B. And that leads us to the other key purpose of the book of Revelation and that isthe consummation of the story of the Bible. We learn the end of the story thatGod restores to man what was lost at the fall and much more! Without the book ofRevelation, the Bible would be incomplete.1. In the beginning of the story we see in Gen 1-2 that …a) God created the heavens and the earth – a perfect and fruitfulenvironmentb) God created man with a body perfectly suited for this earthc) God created man with a soul perfectly suited for a relationship with God,self and others.d) God created man with a spirit that was alive to and walked with God.e) God ruled as king over manf) Man was a loving subject of God’s kingdomg) God gave man the responsibility to reign over His creation.2. But something happened in Genesis 3 that changed everything; Satan, God’s#1 enemy, who rebelled against God, was seeking to get man to rebel againstGod’s rule over them as his king. He succeeded by deceiving man to drinkthe poison – sin which left deep consequences upon himself and the earth.a) The earth was cursed and subjected to futility resulting in it not being asfruitful as God intended.b) Man’s perfect body was subjected to death and all the sickness anddiseases that come with it.c) Every area of man’s soul was affected, it became depraved.d) Man’s spirit, the source of life with God died. Life with God was cutoff.e) Satan became the god of this worldf) Man’s membership was transferred from the kingdom of God to thekingdom of Satang) Man’s reign over God’s creation was perverted.3. From Genesis 3 on we read about:a) Both man and the earth being under a curse and our relationship withourselves, others and God has been deeply affected!b) But we also read a story about the fulfillment of a promise that Godmade that He would send a ‘seed’ someone born of a woman who wouldtotally crush Satan and deliver man from the mess that sin created in hislife!4. For many thousands of years this condition and conflict continues until wecome to Revelation 19 & 20 where God finally, fully and forever deals withsin and Satan.5. Then we come to Revelation 21-22, where once again sin and Satan have nopart just like Genesis 1-2. The curse upon man and the earth will be totallyremoved forever. And we find:a) A new heaven and a new earth, this is a perfect and fruitful environmentfor God’s eternal purposes. Read Revelation 21:1b) We will have resurrected bodies that are perfectly suited to live on thiseternal earth.c) With sin removed, we will live in perfect fellowship and harmony withGod, self and one another. Read 21:3d) Man shall live with God forever Read 21:4be) God will be king forever with His throne right here on earth among Hispeople. Read 22:1,3f) The only people there will be members of God’s kingdom. Read 21:27g) Man will be reigning with God forever and ever. Read Revelation 22:5C. The story of the Bible is God glorifying Himself through Jesus the Redeemer byrestoring His original plan for man and the earth by reversing the effects of sinand the curse upon them and God Himself reigning forever as King.III. ConclusionA. In closing, I want to pray for us Titus 2:11-13. Read.1. May God give MVC a heart to focus on Jesus and not trying to solve the endtimes puzzle of who’s who and when will it happen!

Prayer ReviewPassages April 28, 2019I. Introduction:A. E. M. Bounds in his book “The Power of Prayer” says this, “The Church islooking for better methods; God is looking for better men and women.” “What theChurch needs today is not more or better machinery, not new organizations ormore and fresh methods, but men and women whom the Holy Ghost can use –men and women of prayer, mighty in prayer."1. The power of prayer should not be underestimated. Listen to James 5:16-182. Over the past 3 months, MVC has taken prayer very seriously! We not onlypreached about this on Sundays but we also studied and discussed it in smallgroups and practiced it over 21 days!• We started this series byII. ReviewA. Learning a foundational principle of prayer: God has established asking as themeans of receiving in His kingdom1. Jesus said, “Ask and you shall receive.”2. James 4 says, “You have not because you ask not!”B. Then we learned in John 15 that our attitude in prayer should be humble desperatedependence upon Jesus rather than a complacent self-sufficiency we saw in thechurch in Revelation 31. One says, “I can do nothing apart from Jesus” The other says, “I have need ofnothing.”2. One “God, I need You for this” The other says, “I can handle this”C. Then we learned that the true motive in prayer is to bring glory to God1. Remember this quote:“Too often our prayers are intended to inform God of what we believe Heneeds to do to structure the universe in compliance with our desires for ahappy and comfortable life. Because most of us have been taught that theprimary purpose of prayer is to ask God to meet our temporal needs, wecontinue in this routine without the thought of something greater and morepowerful.” Daniel HendersonD. Then we learned that to pray in Jesus’ name actually has three aspects to it.1. Access to God through Jesus2. Ambassador – ask what Jesus would ask3. Authority – the legal right to ask for that with all of power of Jesus to back upHis nameE. Then we took two weeks to answer the question, “What should we pray aboutother than God meet my needs and bless my family?”1. We learned from the Lord’s Prayer that we should pray first and foremost forGod’s agenda (His glory, His kingdom and His will) along with our personaland spiritual needs.2. We learned from Paul’s prayers that he prayed kingdom focused prayers forthe spiritual needs of the church at large.3. We learned from Timothy Keller’s research on revival that one of theprimary means God has used to bring about revival was corporate prayer forkingdom centered needs. That is the kind of praying we learned from Jesusand PaulF. Then we learned that there is no simple answer to unanswered prayer and we needto be careful about giving nickel answers to million dollar questions for peoplewho are struggling deeply with unanswered prayers1. We learned sometimes it is a matter of not now2. We also learned there could be a variety of different reasons why God wouldsay no. And they should be prayerfully considered when no answer isreceived.3. And sometimes the best answer is I do not know – as we learned from Jobthat sometimes it is a mystery bigger than I am smart!G. Then we saw one reason we should persistent in prayer is because God usesprayer to change us as we pray. We saw at Jesus’ baptism that as He prayed HolySpirit came upon Him, at the transfiguration as He prayed He was transfiguredand in the garden as He prayed angels ministered to Him. All this happened as heprayed!H. Then finally we learned about the priority of God’s Word in prayer as we learnedthe simple and life changing method of Martin Luther1. Capture the heart of the text2. Praise, thank, and worship God from the text3. Admit/confess sin from the text4. Petition/ask God to do for you in light of the textI. The most important part of the series was when we sought to put into practice thethings we learned in 21 days of prayer1. We learned in Hebrews 11:6 that God is a rewarder of those who seek Him2. I was so moved to see a church full of over 100 people come out for 21 daysat 6:00am in the morning to seek God in an hour of prayer.3. I not only heard of answers to prayer but of many people who said they werechanged as they prayed these three weeks!II. CelebrateIII.Going ForwardA. An old preacher Samuel Chadwick said this, “The one concern of the Devil is tokeep Christians from praying. He fears nothing from prayerless work andprayerless religion! He laughs at our toil, mocks at our wisdom, but trembleswhen we pray!B. MVC has no desire for prayerless work and wisdom. We want prayer to becomea part of the DNA of MVC and the people of MVC.

The Setting for Palm Sunday Various Passages April 14, 2019I. Introduction:A. The setting for any story is a crucial element of the story.1. Just think if you missed the first 15 minutes of the Wizard of Oz and all yousaw was the rest of the story without being introduced to key characters, thetornado that knocked Dorothy out and not know why she was trying so hardto get back to Kansas!2. That setting helped us better understand the events, characters and theconclusion to the story of the Wizard of Oz!B. The setting is also important to the story of the triumphal entry of Jesus intoJerusalem. It helps us get some context as to what was really going on, helps ussee the importance of that event, we learn more about Jesus from it, and finallythe theme of that event that we celebrate today on Palm Sunday.C. My goal this morning is to show “what is the big deal” with this event that kickedoff …1. The most important week in the history of this whole world which resulted inthe death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.2. And it kicked off a series of events that eventually led to Jesus’ departurefrom this world, His ascension when He went back to heaven.• To accomplish this goal let’s look at …II. The setting to the Triumphal EntryA. Turn to Luke 9:29-31.1. This passage was the time that Jesus was transfigured on the mountain whileHe was praying. It goes on to tell us that two men appeared at that time andwere talking with Jesus, those two men were Moses and Elijah.2. Wouldn’t you have loved to be in on that conversation and listen to what theywere talking about?3. Read 29-31.4. They were talking about His departure, His departure from this world afterHe died, rose and ascended to heaven. And it was going to take place inJerusalem.5. I would say since that was their discussion during the transfiguration of JesusChrist then it would put that topic right at the top of importance list!B. Look at Luke 9:51 and read1. We see here that the days were approaching regarding His ascension whichHe talked about with Moses and Elijah on the Mount of Transfiguration.2. In light of that, Jesus was determined to go to Jerusalem. It literally meansHe “set His face” to go to Jerusalem. That means Jesus had a strong, firmand unchanging commitment to go to JerusalemC. Then in Chapters 13 and 17 it makes a point of telling us about Jesus teaching anddoing miracles while He was on his way to Jerusalem.D. Turn to Luke 18:31-34 where Jesus told the twelve disciples why He was going toJerusalem. Read v31-34E. Turn to Luke 19:11 as they now were getting real close to Jerusalem. And thetwelve disciples had a whole different idea as to why they thought they wereheading to Jerusalem.1. Read 19:112. They thought it was time for the kingdom of God to appear3. But in the next verse Jesus starts to tell them a parable that indicates He isgoing to be going on a long trip, receive a kingdom, then return back again.Read v124. No, that earthly kingdom of God is not going to start now but after a longperiod of time when I return!F. Look down at 19:28 where we see that they were so close that Jesus sends two ofHis disciples ahead to get a donkey, actually a colt – a young male donkey, tobring to Jesus.1. Read v28-352. And now we are ready for the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.• So it is clear that this entry is important. But to understand why this is thesignificance and Jesus had to do this we need to seeIII. The setting behind the settingA. We find this by looking at three key Old Testament passages that actually refer to“this” event of Jesus coming into Jerusalem. And these will help us understandwhy this is so important, exactly what was going on that day.B. Turn to Psalm 118:22-26. This is what is known as Messianic Psalm – simply aPsalm that speaks of the Messiah, the Christ, the coming Savior and King, notonly of Israel but of the whole world.1. As I read watch fora) The rejection of the Messiah, the stone, by the builders but God takingthat rejected stone and making it the chief corner stone for His building,His church, His kingdom.b) Also note that the psalmist calls upon Him to save them, and they givetheir blessing upon this one, this corner stone who comes in the name ofthe Lord2. Read3. Note in Acts 4 that Peter told the rulers and elders of Israel, their leaders, their builders, that they had crucified Jesus the Christ whom God raised –then he said this. Read Acts 4:11-124. So we learn in this passage that there is going to be a rejection by the leadersof God’s Messiah, His Christ, His King and a praise of Him by the people!C. Turn to Daniel 9:25-261. And it is important to realize this book was written 600 years before Jesuscame!2. Here we see what I believe is the most amazing prophecy in Scripture whereGod tells Israel the exact date the Messiah will come to them. I did a sermonon this 16 years ago where I broke down the whole passage phrase by phrase(April 13, 2003) – I am sure you all remember it. But if you forgot it will beattached along with these notes on our church web page. Also CDsavailable!3. Actually from this verse if you do the calculations you will see the exact datethe Messiah, God’s anointed King will come to Israel.a) When the calculations are done you will see the date is April 6, 32 AD –the exact date of the Triumphal Entry we are looking at today in Luke19. The day that Jesus officially presented Himself as the Messiah!4. Then the next verse tells us what will happen after this date. Read v26a) The Messiah will be cut off – the Hebrew word used to indicate a violentdeath. – An obvious reference to the Cross of Christb) Then after this violent death the city of Jerusalem and the Temple will bedestroyed by enemies. –(1) We know from history that the city of Jerusalem and the Templewere destroyed in 70 AD by the Roman army under the leadershipof General Titus.D. Final prep verses I want you to see is in Zechariah 9:9-10. A book that waswritten 500 years before Jesus came! Read and point out1. Their king was going to come to Jerusalem bringing salvation and riding on adonkey, specifically a colt a young male donkey. v92. And note that He is coming to bring peace v10a) He is going to cut off the chariot, horse and bow – all instruments of war.b) He will speak peace to the nations3. His reign will be over the entire world!• Now let’s go back to Luke 19 and read the account with all this setting now in ourminds.IV. Triumphal EntryA. We already saw in the setting to this that Jesus was coming into Jerusalem and Heis going to be on the colt of a donkey, just like Zechariah 9 says and He is alsocoming in on the exact date Daniel 9:25 told us that the Messiah would come toJerusalem. April 6, 32 ADB. So let’s read this – Read Luke 191. Read 35-37a2. Remember we learned in Psalm 118 that the people will praise him but theleaders will reject Him.a) Listen to 37b-39b) They actually quoted the very words of Psalm 118 but changed it fromone who comes to the King who comes. Because of the miracles theysaw they knew He was the Messiahc) The religious leaders told Jesus to stop the people from calling Him theKing. They rejected Jesus as the King.3. Note Jesus’ response to what just happened as he was approaching Jerusalem.Reada) V41-42(1) “This” day – this specific day – April 6 32 AD the date that Danielhad told you about.(2) This day with a proper response would have brought the peace thatv10 of Zechariah 9 spoke of, cut off war weapons and bring peace.4. Now in the next few verses we see the enemies and destruction that Daniel9:26 told us would happen after the Messiah came to Jerusalem and would beviolently killed. Read 43-44b.5. The reason for all of this is found at the end of v44. Read 44ca) They did not recognize that they just got a visit from God, from theMessiah who would bring them peace and salvation.b) Rather than accepting and worshipping the Messiah the leaders of thenation rejected Him and actually sought to put Him to death – Read v47a fulfillment of Daniel 9:26 the violent death of the Messiah.C. Palm Sunday was the official presentation of God’s King to Israel, who came tobring peace and salvation and while the people recognized who He was theofficial leaders of the nation rejected Him.• There are two possible responses to this major event in Jesus life. First….V. ApplicationA. The religious leaders rejected Jesus because they did not recognize who Jesus wasor what was going on1. Read v44.2. Do you recognize that King Jesus is actually here at MVC this very morning? You can’t see Him but the Bible teaches very clearly He is with us when wegather in Jesus’ name3. And do you recognize what is going on here today is you just heard clearlywho Jesus is as proven by this very special event, the Triumphal Entry? AndHe is here today to bring you salvation and peace!4. John 1:9-13B. Is your response like the common people who recognized and praised Jesus astheir King?1. Read v37c-382. Read v40 – If they did not praise Him the stones on the street would havebecause this event was so big and important. This entry demands praise!!!!
The ALP announced on Friday (29/3/19) that it will ban negative gearing from 1 January 2020 if it wins the election next month. I wrote an article for The Australian newspaper over the weekend which addresses the steps property investors can take to fortify their investments (which I list below). A number of people have asked me whether they should invest in property prior to 1 January 2020. I discuss this too.We still have a long way to goOf course, the ALP has to win the election before it can ban negative gearing. I acknowledge that virtually every poll predicts an ALP victory. But John Howard didn’t poll very well leading up to his 1996 election win. And who would have thought Mr Trump would become President of the USA! So, anything can happen.Secondly, it will depend on how strong their win is and whether they have a large majority or not. If it’s a tight win, they may have to negotiate with minor parties to get its law enacted and, as a result, water down its change to negative gearing e.g. limit it rather than an outright ban.And finally, we have not seen the draft legislation yet. All the ALP has said is they will be negative gearing if people invest in established property or shares after 1 January 2020. Back in 1985 when the Hawke government banned negative gearing, people used unit trusts to invest in property. They borrowed to buy the units and as such were able to continue to negatively gear the property. So, there could be workarounds. What should (existing) property investors consider doing? There is a risk that the ban on negative gearing will put further downward pressure on property values in 2020. Owning an investment property in a falling market can be a double-whammy. Not only is your asset value falling, but you have to put your hand in your pocket each month to contribute towards the holding costs (if the net rental income isn’t enough to meet the loan repayments). Here are some of the steps you can consider taking:1. Reduce holding costs – fix your interest rateMany lenders are offering 3 years fixed rates at levels below variable interest rates, particularly if your loan repayments are structured as interest only. This may help reduce the monthly holding costs and you could still be better off on a fixed rate because, even if the RBA does cut rates this year, there’s no guarantees the banks will pass it on. See more from my blog a few week’s ago.2. Make any changes to mortgages prior to 2020If values do fall further as predicted, now might be a good time to lock in access to available equity. This involves increasing your loan’s credit limit to up to 80 percent of the current value of your investment property. This will give you access to additional credit for emergencies (i.e. a financial buffer) or future investment purposes. This equity may not be available in the future if bank valuations fall after 1 January 2020.3. Divest of underperforming properties in 2019I expect that some property types and locations will be more exposed to changes in negative gearing. For example, locations or buildings that are dominated by investor-owners could be at greater risk compared to locations with a more normalised number of owner-occupiers. In addition, the types of properties that have historically been marketed to investors primarily because of the tax benefits they generate (such as depreciation and negative gearing) will almost certainly be negatively impacted. If you own a property with these characteristics, you might consider divesting of that asset before any changes to negative gearing are confirmed. Of course, you must consider this in context of the property’s past investment performance, likelihood for future returns, divestment costs such as Capital Gains Tax, real estate agent fees and the like. The point is that if it’s a dud investment today, its likely to be an even worse investment if negative gearing is banned.4. Prepare to increase your rental incomeSQM Research predicts that acquisition rental yields will rise by around 1% if negative gearing is banned. This is what many professionals said what happened when the Hawke Labor government banned negative gearing between 1985 and 1987. They reinstated negative gearing to take pressure off rents. If rents do rise, you should ensure that your assets are well positioned to benefit from this.To achieve this, you could consider doing two things. Firstly, avoid any lengthy rental agreement terms with your tenant. This may allow you to review rent levels to meet the market. Secondly, consider making cosmetic improvements to your property that will enhance its rental demand. Things like installing air conditioning, giving kitchens and bathrooms a facelift, recarpeting or painting can have huge appeal to tenants. These improvements don’t have to cost a fortune, you can use a mortgage to fund these expenses and you can depreciate these improvements (i.e. get a gradual tax deduction for them).Another way to increase a property’s income is to consider furnishing it and letting it out on a short-term basis via businesses such as Airbnb, stayz or corporate let. You can potentially more than double the amount of income produced by a property (compared to having a permanent tenant) thereby transforming its overall cash flow from a negative position to neutral or even positive. There are risks associated with this including ensuring you have correct insurance cover, getting approval from Body Corporate managers if it’s an apartment and preparing for the likelihood that income receipts may be lumpy. If abolishing negative gearing does put downward pressure on values, then hopefully you can offset some of the impact by maximising your property’s rental income.5. Maybe it will create opportunities? The impact of these proposed negative gearing changes could also create investment opportunities too. My analysis has demonstrated that, in the long run, the abolition of negative gearing will only have a small impact on overall investment returns in investment-grade locations (see here). In the long run, the immutable laws of supply and demand in the face of strong population growth will continue to generate substantial capital growth. A strong level of capital growth will, over time, dwarf the lost tax benefits as a result of banning negative gearing. Therefore, if banning negative gearing does temporarily depress prices in quality locations, it might create an opportunity to buy investment-grade property at a level below intrinsic value.Should you invest in property prior to 2020 to ‘lock in’ negative gearing?Of course, the answer to the above question depends on your individual position and goals. However, as a very general rule, I would say that if your retirement strategy was to invest in property over the next 5 years then, yes! I would bring forward the implementation of that and try and invest prior to 1 January 2020. However, if for whatever reason that is not possible, I would not be too upset. Investing in the right asset is far more important than negative gearing benefits.Remember, a negative gearing benefit diminishes over time. It is typically material over the first 5 to 10 years of ownership. After 10 years, the benefits of negative gearing have typically evaporated. So, if you intend to hold the property for many decades, the initial negative gearing benefits become less material over time. Therefore, if you decide to try and invest in property before negative gearing is banned, don’t cut any corners and invest in just any property. A quality property without negative gearing will always produce better returns (in the long run) than an average property with negative gearing.I would caution anyone from being driven by the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). Don’t invest in property just because you feel that it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to enjoy some negative gearing benefits. Making investment decisions purely in the pursuit of tax benefit is a recipe for disaster (i.e. mistakes).Stay calm and focus on the long-runThese potential changes to negative gearing generate a lot of noise. The media and politicians love it. But in reality, in the long run, they are relatively meaningless. Its just noise.Focus on the fundamentals (it’s exactly why I wrote Investopoly). Invest in quality assets. Have a plan and stick to it. I’d bet in 2030 we’ll look back and laugh at all the negative gearing hyperbole and be thankful it didn’t distract us from making important decision.
Summary of Ordinary Life for Sunday, March 31, 2019I’ve loved how Bill has framed a few of these lectures as questions. Going with that theme, I wanted to explore the question, “How do you see?” to get us thinking about what new ways we can evolve our sight. We’ve learned on a grand scale that nothing is fixed, thus there is no reason why we as humans should be fixed. We too are evolving and expanding. The cool thing is that we have conscious choice about how we do so. In an ever creating, ever evolving universe, what do you think the universe is trying to express through you? In what ways do you need to shift how you see? The two guiding ideas I’ve been inspired by are:“The eye through which I see God, is the same eye through which God sees me.” (Meister Eckhart)“I live and move and have my being in God.” (Acts 17:28)Both of these are true and also useful metaphors to help us understand how we might conceive of the divine unfolding in our lives, which is to say that we are dimensions of the universe unfolding as well. However you join us in Ordinary Life, I’m grateful for your presence and your reflective questions! Thanks for joining me on this odyssey! Be well and much love - HollyTo listen to the audio of the presentation, use the player below. Here is the link to the solar system video I played. Enjoy!
Unanswered Prayer Various Passages March 24, 2019I. Introduction:A. Unanswered prayer is one of the most discouraging and perplexing aspects ofprayer, maybe even of the Christian life!1. Believers are told right from the beginning of their relationship with God thatGod answers prayers! We are told to pray, we are taught promises aboutprayer, and we hear amazing stories about answers to prayers for others. andyes they themselves have even experienced some answers to prayers2. Then comes along something that deeply burdens our hearts, so we startclaiming His promises, persisting in prayer, praying in faith and yet they havenot seen one shred of evidence of God doing anything or answering theirprayers.3. And when it goes on over a long period of time with no answer from Goda) Some their practice and belief in prayer really cools down thinking whygo to Him in prayer because He does not answer my prayers anyway!b) Some begin to question God’s faithfulness or His word and find itdifficult to trust Him.c) Some start to feel abandoned by God, let down by Him and that Hereally does not care about my concerns.d) And even some who have turn away from God hurt, angry anddisappointed.B. Then comes along that Christian who learned the “company line” when it comesto unanswered prayer as they say “God does answer prayer, sometimes it’s yes, sometimes it is no and sometimes it is not now!”1. While there is truth to this line, I do not think it communicate the completetruth when it comes to what the Bible says about unanswered prayer.2. And I personally feel that answer can be very insensitive for someone whohas been deeply, deeply disappointed by unanswered prayer. To them it canfeel like “a nickel answer to a million dollar question!”• This morning I am going to try to fill out a bit more of what it means when we sayyes, no, not now and let me add a fourth one “I do not know” Let’s start withII. YesA. When we get a yes we celebrate, our faith in strengthen in God and His word andour hearts are lifted high with joy! Read Ps 118:5-6B. But sometime we do not recognize the yes because it is not exactly what I askedfor, the time I asked for it or in the way I asked God to do it. In other words it isa yes but it is a different answer than I expected.C. I love what Tom Yeakley says about this– When you pray do not tell God how todo it, just ask Him to do it and allow Him to do it in a way that brings glory toHim.1. When I pray that way, it opens my mind to see God working in ways of Hischoosing rather than mine!• Let me next address the second easiest part of that phrase to answerIII. Not nowA. Simply that is saying God will answer but not in my timing.B. Listen to what Jesus said about this:1. Read Luke 18:12. Then Jesus tells them the parable of a widow who pleaded with an unjustjudge. He finally gave in to her request after she wore him down by herdetermination. Then Jesus said, “How much more will God, the righteousjudge, listen to the persistent prayers, day and night of His loved ones?”C. There are things I have prayed for years, and some even for decades that God didanswer like the salvation of my parents, something that I prayed for over 20years!• Next is the hardest part of that phrase to answer or maybe to accept – when God’sanswers to our prayers are:IV. NoA. This is the heart of unanswered prayer - I asked God for something and Heanswered it with a no!1. I do not want to leave it at that this morning but expand on that a bit. I thinka no needs a bigger explanation for someone who is wrestling withunanswered prayers.B. Sometimes that No is because God is a loving wise father is saying “no” for mybenefit1. Greatest example of this in scripture is Job as two times he asked God to lethim die. Job 6:8-92. And often we do not see it at the moment but God’s no is the most loving andwise answer you can get to your prayers. Usually I do not see that right awaybut times I look back over my life and say I am so grateful that God did notanswer that prayer with a yes as what I have now is exactly what I need andis actually better for me.C. Sometimes the no is because what I asked for was not God’s will.1. Obviously, Jesus is the greatest picture of this when He said His soul wasdeeply grieved to the point of death then He asked the Father three times thatif it was possible for this burden of the cross to pass from Him; yet not as Iwill but as you will!2. As we, all know that request was not God’s will and Jesus went to the cross. When we have Jesus’ heart for God’s will in our prayers a no is much easierto accept!D. Sometimes the no is because God has a greater way to display His glory!1. Three times Paul asked God to remove the thorn in the flesh he had - listen towhat God said. Read 2 Corinthians 12:8-92. I think of someone like Joni Erickson Tada who became a quadriplegic as aresult of a diving accident.a) In my way of thinking how much glory God could have gotten if hehealed her. But look at the way God has displayed Himself and used herby not healing her.b) She is a beautiful picture of this verse and of God receiving greater gloryby not healing her.E. Sometimes we get the answer no because our motives are all wrong in ourprayers.1. Read James 4:2d-32. Remember this quote “Too often our prayers are intended to inform God ofwhat we believe He needs to do to structure the universe in compliance withour desires for a happy and comfortable life.” Daniel Henderson.F. Let me give you one more reason for a no that is not discussed often enough butScripture does refer to it. Simply that while being a child of God, my life andwalk are out of whack with God.1. There are various Scriptures that refer to this but I just will show you a few.First :a) Read Psalm 66:18b) To regard sin in my heart means that I know that there is a serious sin inmy life but I do nothing about it!c) God is not even listening to that prayer as He is concerned about what isof first importance - getting your heart right with Him2. You might say – that is Old Testament stuff. Listen to 1 John 3:22a) He says here his prayers are answered because He obeys God and doesthe things that please Himb) What does this imply about the child of God who is in blatantdisobedience to God and involved in things that are displeasing to God?3. Try this one on – it is for married couples, especially husbands!a) Read 1 Peter 3:7b) Some husbands here today are not getting their prayers answeredbecause you are not treating your sister in Christ, God’s daughter, yourwife sensitively, gently and with honor.c) I get that because if some guy does not treat my daughters right butrather harshly then comes and asks for a bunch of good things – what doyou think is going to happen.• Finally let’s look at my addition this morning to yes, no, not yet and it isV. I do not knowA. Job is the greatest example of this. Turn in your Bibles to Job 71. Actually, in the book of Job there are two prayer requests that he had, eachrequest he asked for two separate times. The first one we referred to earlier –his request two times to die. The other prayer request Job asked two timeswas – Why are you doing this to me?2. Read 7:19-20 – Why have you set me as a target?3. Read 10:2 - Let me know why you contend with me?B. Job makes it very clear that God does not answer his prayers!1. Read 19:6-7 – but I get no answer2. Read 30:19-20 – You do not answer me3. Read 31:35-36 – let the Almighty answer me.4. We can see in Job the pain and frustration of unanswered prayer. It got tothe point where Job, being a righteous man, struggled so much with what washappening to him that he began to find fault with God and accuse Him ofbeing unrighteous in the way He dealt with him!C. Now listen to how God answered Job1. Read Job 38:1-4 – Oh, oh Look out as it took God four chapters of questionsto Job for him to get the point.a) Then in chapter 38 God pummels him with questions about his ability toknow and understand the great mysteries of the heavens and the earth? He says tell me if you understand, surely you know!b) Then in chapter 39 - Focus now switches from the great mysteries of theheavens and the earth to the great mysteries of the animal world as theLord questions him about his ability to understand these things.c) Then at the end of this section we see Job’s response – Read 40:1-52. Then in chapter 40 – God turns to Job’s strength and authority to overcomeand control things! Read 40:6-9.a) Then in Chapter 40 He uses the hippopotamus and in chapter 41 He usesthe crocodile to show him just how small his strength is.3. In summary God showed Job a major lesson that would be good for all of usto let sink deep within our hearts - that there are things in life that are smarterthan he is smart and stronger than he is strong.D. Jobs final prayer of repentance reveals to us this final answer to the question ofunanswered prayer1. Read 42:1-32. Job is broken at the core of his being as he sees God’s sovereignty and hisinability to overthrow what God wants to do.3. He also learned that God’s purposes are just too high for him to understand.E. The answer “I do not know” is a way of saying - sometimes the reality ofunanswered prayer is a mystery, something that is bigger than we are smart, bigger than we can understand –F. Bottom line at times it is a very biblical answer to the question “Why God doesnot answer my prayer?” is “I do not know” It is a mystery!VI. ApplicationA. My prayer for today’s message is that those who are presently struggling with thismillion dollar question may discern a bit more what God may be doing in theirlives in not answering their prayers. And those who are not struggling now maybe equipped to more sensitively and wisely serve those who are struggling withthis!B. Next week in many ways will be part two to this question of unanswered prayeras it raises some other questions – primarily - how do I pray now.1. I have this unanswered prayer, and I see that God isn’t against me, but ratheris doing something for His glory. So does that mean I stop praying for this? Isit wrong to pray for this?2. Should I be the persistent widow or should I let go and move on?C. Before Josh closes us, I just want to give a few minutes for those who have beenwrestling deeply today with this question to sit before the Lord to see if theresomething God wants to impress upon their heart today.1. Not now – Persist in Prayer2. Noa) Not best for me in the long runb) Not God’s willc) God has a greater way to display His gloryd) Wrong motivese) Undealt with sin in my life3. I do not know – It is a mystery bigger than I am smart!
Paul’s PrayersEphesians 3:14-21March 17, 2019I. Introduction:A. Last week, as we looked at the Lord’s Prayer, we were answering the questionI got from two men “What kind of things do we pray for other than God blessmy family and fix these problems?” Today I am continuing to answer thatquestion by looking at the prayers that the Apostle Paul prayed to see the kindof things about which he prayed.B. As I was preparing I did some studying to see just what people do pray abouthere in North America. I found two different studies that addressed this. TheBarna Group and Lifeway Research1. Let me tell you about a few interesting things I found people have prayedfor at some time in their life.a) 21% - Winning the lotteryb) 13% - Your favorite sports team would winc) 7% - Good parking spotd) 7% - Not get caught speedinge) I have prayed for three of those four, anyone else?2. Here is a summary of what people pray about most often:a) Barna group said, “Primarily the immediate needs and concerns of theindividual. Corporate needs are less compelling drivers in people’sprayer life!”b) Lifeway Research said – “Most Americans (82%) typically focus ontheir friends and family. (74%) on their own problems. (54%) prayabout good things happening in their life. (36%) pray for their futureprosperity.”C. Tim Keller writing on revival said that while Holy Spirit is the ultimate causeof revival but He does use “secondary causes.”1. And he said one of the three primary causes He uses is corporate prayer, which is focused upon extraordinary, kingdom centered prevailing prayer!22. Sounds like what we learned in the Lord’s Prayer guide last week –praying with others and praying, first and foremost, for God’s agenda (Hisglory, kingdom and will).3. This is interesting because what Jesus called us to and what Keller tells usbrings about revival are the same ----- corporate kingdom centeredpraying! That is just the opposite of what these studies found – only 4%of the people most often pray with someone else and the majority of ourprayers are for needs and concerns of the individual, and very littleconcern for the kingdom needs of the Church of Jesus Christ!D. And I guess it would be no surprise to find that Paul’s prayers recorded inScripture were for the corporate body, the local church and they werekingdom centered prayers!
