Join me, Dr. Mike T. Nelson, as I sit down with Simon Wegerif, the visionary founder of iThlete and a pioneer in heart rate variability (HRV) technology. In this episode, we revisit Simon's journey from creating the very first HRV app for iOS to his latest work at Lifelight, where they're breaking new ground in measuring blood pressure and heart rate with cutting-edge technology. We'll dive into the practical applications of HRV for training, hear Simon's inspiring story about a health scare that changed his outlook, and discuss game-changers like sleep hygiene, deep breathing, cold water immersion, and mental health for improving HRV. If you're as fascinated by HRV, performance optimization, and health tech as I am, you won't want to miss this episode!Sponsors:Tecton Life Ketone drink! https://tectonlife.com/ DRMIKE to save 20%LMNT electrolyte drink mix: miketnelsonlmnt.comHRV Education Course: https://miket.me/hrv/ Enter code hrv100 at checkout for $100 offTriphasic 2 book now available!Go to https://triphasic2.com/Episode Chapters:00:25 Heart Rate Variability Deep Dive00:31 Simon's Journey with iFleet00:42 HRV Measurement and Technology01:01 Health Scare and Current Endeavors01:52 Sponsor Messages and Announcements03:35 Interview with Simon: Early Days of iFleet04:22 Technical Challenges and Innovations06:41 HRV in Practice and Research19:13 Breathing Techniques and HRV38:58 Current Status and Future Plans41:35 Innovative Health Monitoring with Lifelight43:20 Technical Challenges and Solutions in Remote PPG44:48 Applications and Future of Lifelight48:25 Personal Health Journey and Prostate Cancer Awareness52:19 Importance of Regular Health Check-ups56:54 HRV and Its Impact on Performance01:08:06 Zone 2 Training and Its Benefits01:14:00 Conclusion and Final ThoughtsFlex Diet Podcast Episodes You May Enjoy: Episode 215: Breathing, Heart Rate, and HRV: An Interview with Dr. Scotty Butcher, The Strength JediEpisode 108: Top 3 Common Body Composition Mistakes and How To Use Heart Rate Variability (HRV) To Solve ThemConnect with SimonLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/simon-wegerifEmail: simon@myithlete.comGet In Touch with Dr Mike:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drmiketnelson/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn1aTbQqHglfNrENPm0GTpgEmail: https://miketnelson.com/contact-us/

We continue our recovery month with interviewing Chris Schneider. A PhD student in Athlete monitoring & heart rate measures. Chris has contributed to several scientific papers relating to this topic including his leading author contributions in the paper 'Heart rate monitoring in team sports - A conceptual framework for contextualizing heart rate measures for training and recovery prescription'. I chat with Chris about the relevance of heart rate for the recreational runner and where the current science sits on its accuracy. We then dive into factors that can influence your heart rate and when you should be cautious with interpreting this data to make smarter training decisions. Finally, Chris shares his views on the practical implications of heart rate monitoring for the recreational runner, whether it be during exercise, or during recovery. This episode ties in well with our last episode interviewing Simon Wegerif on Heart rate variability and the clinical relevance of its data. We continue our recovery month theme with interviewing Simon Wegerif. Simon is the founder of ithlete and has website myithlete.com selling heart rate variability (HRV) apps and sensors. Firstly, Simon explains the measurement of heart rate variability and how the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system are involved. He does an excellent job of explaining this concept to the general public and is extremely knowledgeable with the available research on the topic. Simon then explains what will influence your HRV including emotional stress, sickness, physical strain, over-reaching exercise and different foods. Most importantly, we turn our attention to HRV and recovery! Including practical ways you can analyse and interpret HRV to make smarter training decisions. This episode will tie in really well with our next conversation with Dr. Chris Schneider next episode to talk about heart rate and recovery! In its simplest form, training is a method of increasing biological stressors in order to increase performance in an athlete. But, how do coaches know when they push their athletes too hard and actually hurt their performance? This is especially important considering athletes encounter stress from more than just endurance training such as work, personal life, illness, and even environment.Dave sat down with researcher Simon Wegerif to discuss heart rate variability, a precise and easily measured metric that may help reveal when the body is overstressed and likely unable to endure heavy training loads. As even more information about the importance of effective recovery is published, coaches may want to consider adding heart rate variability to the data they monitor.
Simon Wegerif is the founder of ithlete, a company that creates sensors and apps related to heart rate variability (HRV). He discusses how triathletes and endurance athletes can use HRV to measure and manage total load - the sum of various different kinds of stress on the body, including mental and physical. IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT: -What is total load, and how is it relevant for triathlon training? -What is the relation between HRV and total load? -How do we know how much we can or should train, given all the stressors in our lives outside of training? -Does stress really equal stress, no matter the source of that stress? -How can age-group triathletes practically use HRV to measure and manage total load? Simon Wegerif is a World leading expert on Heart Rate Variability, and how we can use HRV to make our training more effective. Rob saw Simon speak the TrainingPeaks Endurance Coaching Summit 2018, and took the opportunity to get him on the show to see what we can all learn about this relatively new science. In short, HRV gives us an insight into the TOTAL overall stress on our system in an easy to understand metric. As we’ve suspected for years, the science backs up the theory that training stress isn’t the only (or even, the main) source of stress on our bodies - and we find out how, by monitoring HRV, we can get more out of our limited training time. Most importantly, it may well give us information on how we can help avoid illness and injury!Show Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. Today we're looking at HRV- endurance training, adrenal fatigue, and future app developments. If you didn't listen to it, in Episode 1 we primarily looked at resistance training, or weight training. Today we also look at some scenarios where the HRV metric can be confounded where an increase in it is not good, how it can be used to identify possible adrenal fatigue and how to improve its accuracy by combining it with Resting Heart Rate and qualitative measures. Today's guest is Simon Wegerif who founded ithlete, the first HRV app company, which appeared 5 years ago in 2009. ...
