Quitting Adderall was the hardest thing I've ever done—and one of the most transformational. In this episode, I open up like never before about my journey from being a highly medicated, underweight teen with low self-worth to becoming a high-performance health coach grounded in neuroscience, data, and deep empathy. We talk about the emotional and physiological toll of stimulants, and how I began to rebuild my brain and body from the inside out through exercise, sleep, nutrition, and self-awareness.Joined by Carlos and Miguel Bertonatti on Beyond Biohacking Brothers, we dive deep into the three most important health metrics I believe everyone should track for longevity and performance: VO₂ max, heart rate variability (HRV), and body composition. I explain how these markers work together, why most people are too stressed to truly optimize them, and how sleep is the real secret weapon for recovery and high performance. This conversation isn't just about quitting Adderall—it's about becoming your own Chief Medical Officer and learning how to feel again. Whether you're struggling with ADHD, burnout, or just trying to reconnect with your physiology in a world that constantly pulls you away from it, this episode will show you what's possible when you stop numbing and start listening.
In today's episode I'm joined by Salim Najjar; a pioneer in nervous system regulation and known as “that HRV guy”. He's transforming how high performers relate to their bodies, their purpose, and their leadership.Salim doesn't just interpret Heart Rate Variability (HRV) as biological data he teaches it as a language. We dive into a deeply powerful and practical conversation around:✅ Salim's journey from engineering to entrepreneurship, biohacking, and nervous system mastery✅ Why regulating the nervous system is key to sustainable success and well-being✅ How HRV (Heart Rate Variability) reveals your body's stress patterns and energetic alignment✅ The link between perception, stress, and emotional regulation✅ Why self-awareness is the gateway to nervous system healing✅ The role of relationships, sleep, and micro stressors in overall health✅ His shift from a ‘doing' mindset to a ‘being' state and how that changed everything...and so much more.
In this episode, Dr. Avi sits down with Dr. Torkil Færø — Norwegian GP, emergency physician, photographer, and author of The Pulse Cure. With more health experts than ever, we have more complexity and confusion about what it actually takes to be healthy in 2025. My podcast guest today helps to dispel myths and mysteries by using data to examine bio-individuality in real time. We talk about using smartwatches, smart rings and other wearables to track stress levels through observing Heart Rate Variability (HRV) - and how this can help your health goals. Dr. Torkil Færø is a GP and emergency physician, documentary filmmaker, author and photographer. Over a 26-year career as a freelance doctor, he has worked all over Norway, had hundred thousand consultations and thus gained a unique picture of the diseases that plague us. He learned that the cause is most often found in the stresses our lifestyles place on our bodies. When Torkil's father died at 73, he realized that he had to change his own lifestyle. Being 40 pounds overweight, under-trained, over-stressed, under-slept and drinking alcohol daily, he learned that this lifestyle could deprive him of decades. Using wearables he found a way to track and regulate his nervous system and physiology. Tune in to learn about the practical and accessible way to read your body's signals to create wellness. Do you ever wake up feeling shattered but you just make yourself train hard anyway? I know it sounds like the thing you should do, but is that actually the best thing for your recovery, your performance and ultimately, your body? As triathletes, we’re masters at tracking watts, pace, and heart rate but there's another metric that could revolutionise your training decisions. Enter Heart Rate Variability (HRV) – your body's daily report card on recovery and readiness. Today I'm getting nerdy with Daniel Roland from HRV4Training to learn how tracking your HRV can help you get the most out of your training sessions, understand your recovery and avoid burnout. And all it takes is one minute every morning. What's HRV and Why Should You Care? Think of HRV as your body's daily stress barometer. It measures the variation between your heartbeats, giving you a window into your nervous system's state. Low HRV? Your body's in fight-or-flight mode. High HRV? You're recovering well and ready to tackle those key sessions. For triathletes juggling three sports and the demands of life, this is the kind of data you want to know. The HRV4Training App The HRV4Training app turns your smartphone into a sophisticated recovery monitoring device. Created by computer scientist Marco Altini, you don’t need any expensive or annoying gadgets – just your phone's camera and your finger for a 60-second morning check. The Science Behind Smarter Training Research shows athletes who adjust their training based on HRV perform better, even when doing fewer intense sessions. Think about that – better results with more strategic, not necessarily more, training. It's about training smarter, not harder. How to measure your HRV Consistency is key here and by measuring at the same time each morning, you’ll get a baseline of your individual scores so you can understand when your body is in a state of stress. Unlike other apps that present HRV data with an unknown algorithmic value, HRV4Training gives you raw data so you can understand how variabilities such as training sessions, sleep, nutrition, alcohol, menstrual cycles and life stressors impact your body. Daniel explains how the app's tracking features help you connect the dots between your lifestyle choices and recovery capacity. It's like having a personal performance detective. While HRV isn't a strict training dictator, it's an objective adviser when you're unsure about whether you should push through or perhaps back off a little. Think of it as your body's early warning system. Your Investment in Smarter Training For less than the cost of a new race belt, HRV4Training gives you ongoing insights into your recovery status. Available on iOS and Android, it's a one-time purchase that could save you a lot of guesswork and help you train smarter and recover faster. I've personally been experimenting with HRV for training myself lately and I love it how it provides that real time insight into my recovery, my training readiness, and the quality of my sleep the night before. And no, this isn’t a paid partnership. I bought the app out of my own pocket and I’m not getting any kickbacks! But I sure am excited to bring this conversation to you to help you unlock another level of performance. Let’s go! In this episode, Lauren dives into the importance of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and how it reflects the state of your nervous system. She explains why HRV matters, how it serves as a nervous system resilience score, and how a higher HRV indicates flexibility and adaptability, while a lower HRV suggests you're stuck in a stress response. Lauren shares seven practical ways to support and improve HRV—like cold water exposure, humming, singing, rhythm, eye movement, laughter, caring touch, and play-based activities. Her message is clear: if you're feeling tired or overwhelmed, your nervous system is asking for help. The good news? You now have some simple tools to support it. Recovery often becomes the forgotten pillar of ultra running performance, especially for those of us who occupy the back of the pack. After crossing the finish line of my latest 220-mile ultra adventure, I've been closely monitoring my Heart Rate Variability (HRV) to guide my recovery journey – and the insights have been too valuable not to share.HRV measures the variation in time between each heartbeat and serves as a window into your autonomic nervous system, revealing the delicate balance between your "fight or flight" response and your "rest and digest" state. When your HRV dips low, your body is waving a red flag that you're under stress – whether from physical fatigue after a grueling race, mental pressure, inadequate sleep, or even an oncoming illness. Conversely, higher HRV readings suggest your body is recovered and ready for training stress. What makes HRV particularly powerful for ultra runners is how it personalizes recovery. After my recent ultra, my HRV remained at rock bottom for two full weeks – a clear signal that despite my eagerness to return to training, my body needed more time. This metric has repeatedly saved me from the overtraining trap that so many endurance athletes fall into. Beyond simply tracking numbers, understanding HRV helps establish a deeper connection with your body's signals and promotes sustainable training practices that can extend your ultra running journey for years to come.Want to improve your recovery and performance through HRV monitoring? Subscribe to Choose to Endure for more practical tips designed specifically for back-of-the-pack ultra runners. Share your own HRV experiences or recovery strategies – I'd love to hear how this tool is working for fellow endurance athletes on their ultra journeys.Choose to Endure:Email:info@choosetoendure.comWebsite:https://www.choosetoendure.com/YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@ChoosetoEndureInstagram:https://instagram.com/choose_to_endure?utm_source=qr Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61552757049526

What if you could track your body's readiness, optimise recovery, and boost your overall health—just by measuring one key metric? In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Torkil Færø, author of The Pulse Cure, to explore the power of Heart Rate Variability (HRV). While many athletes use HRV to fine-tune their training, Dr. Torkil takes a broader approach—one that puts health first. And as I've learned over the years, when your health is in a great place, performance becomes much easier to optimise. We dive into: ✅ Why HRV is for everyone, not just athletes ✅ The biggest causes of stress (and how they're stealing your energy) ✅ Why taking control of your health is essential—especially after 40 ✅ The benefits of sunlight, cold therapy, and deliberate breathing If you're looking for simple but powerful ways to improve your health, performance, and resilience, this episode is a must-listen!
Dr. Torkil Færø, expert in emergency medicine and wellness, returns for his second appearance on the podcast to share insights on how modern stress impacts our health. With 25 years of experience, Torkil wrote The Pulse Cure, the subject of his first episode with us and a bestselling book on how Heart Rate Variability (HRV) can help manage stress, reduce inflammation, and improve overall well-being.In his latest book, Vilekuren: The Rest Cure, Torkil explores the essential practice of rest—something that's become more important than ever in today's fast-paced world. Rest, he argues, is crucial for our health, but it's often neglected. As someone who has dedicated this year to slowing down and releasing busyness from her life, Susanne is especially excited about this conversation. In this episode, Torkil and Susanne discuss the importance of rest in improving health and performance. They explore how hidden stressors, like technology and work pressure, deplete our energy and how mindful practices like breathwork and meditation can restore balance. Torkil also highlights the need for women to align rest with their natural cycles, improving health and reducing stress-related issues.Ultimately, Torkil and Susanne advocate for a shift in how we approach stress and recovery, encouraging us to prioritize rest for better energy, performance, and quality of life. In this Crazy Wisdom episode, Stewart Alsop dives into a compelling conversation with guest Sterling Cooley, exploring Sterling's research and theories on the vagus nerve, ultrasound, and consciousness. Sterling introduces his Niemertin Vagus Nerve Origin Theory and the role of microtubules in consciousness. The two discuss scientific materialism, quantum mechanics, and xenon's potential to unlock new understanding in consciousness studies. This episode takes listeners through groundbreaking ideas on the connections between consciousness and cellular structures, and to learn more, visit Sterling's work at Ultraskool.com.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversation!Timestamps00:00 Introduction to the Crazy Wisdom Podcast00:39 Exploring the Vagus Nerve and Yoga01:22 Diving into Xenon and Consciousness06:29 Understanding Microtubules11:18 Quantum Mechanics and Microtubules22:34 The Role of Microtubules in Consciousness27:28 Astrobiology and the Origins of Life33:22 COVID-19 and Microtubules34:53 Introduction to Filopodia and COVID Mechanisms36:47 Exploring Consciousness in Microtubules37:49 Questioning the Neuronal Model of Consciousness40:27 The Role of Microtubules in Consciousness45:35 The Power of Intention and Healing50:42 Personal Experiences with Chronic Pain and Healing52:13 The Potential of Xenon in Healing01:04:21 Concluding Thoughts and ResourcesKey InsightsThe Vagus Nerve and Consciousness: Sterling Cooley introduces the "Niemertin Vagus Nerve Origin Theory," exploring the vagus nerve as a significant player in human consciousness. Through his research, he posits that the vagus nerve may have untapped potential to influence states of consciousness when stimulated by ultrasound, suggesting a direct pathway between physical body processes and awareness.Microtubules as a Model for Consciousness: Cooley discusses the Orchestrated Objective Reduction (ORCOR) theory, originally developed by Stuart Hameroff and Roger Penrose, which views microtubules as a potential site for consciousness within cells. This model contrasts sharply with the traditional neuronal view, arguing that consciousness could be emerging from sub-cellular structures, rather than solely from synaptic interactions.Xenon's Unexplored Role in Consciousness and Pain Relief: Throughout the conversation, Cooley explains his interest in xenon gas for its unusual effects on consciousness and physical pain. Known for its anesthetic properties, xenon interacts with microtubules in ways that could reveal more about how consciousness works at a cellular level. He shares personal experiences with xenon as profoundly healing and consciousness-expanding, a combination he believes could be used in new therapeutic models.Gratitude Meditation and HRV Enhancement: Cooley recounts how a form of gratitude-based meditation has been shown to significantly raise Heart Rate Variability (HRV), a key indicator of autonomic nervous system balance. By coupling gratitude with anesthetics like ketamine, individuals may enter states of heightened well-being and healing, providing a bridge between subjective states and measurable physiological effects. The Potential of Conscious Intention for Healing: Cooley suggests that if consciousness operates through microtubules, then conscious intention may have a tangible effect on physical healing. He speculates that specific mindsets, especially gratitude, could interact with bodily processes at a fundamental level. This view ties into long-standing yet often-dismissed ideas around the mind-body connection and its implications for health.Quantum Mechanics and Cellular Intelligence: Discussing the quantum behavior of microtubules, Cooley points out their ability to interface with quantum-level processes. This quantum component, according to ORCOR, is where consciousness may arise and could allow cells to possess a form of “intelligence” or agency. This insight proposes a model of cellular life as potentially sentient, challenging conventional biological views. The Commercial and Academic Resistance to New Theories of Consciousness: Finally, Cooley critiques the scientific community's resistance to non-traditional models of consciousness, attributing it to entrenched financial and academic interests. He suggests that the popular synaptic model persists due to its alignment with pharmacological approaches, which are lucrative but may overlook more holistic explanations of consciousness and agency.

Today, I want to introduce you to something called heart rate variability (HRV). HRV is a measurement of the variations between the heartbeats. There are different time distances between your heartbeats. The more varied the timing is between the heartbeats, the healthier a person is, and the higher the HRV is. The less varied the timing is, the less healthy the person is, and the lower the HRV is. HRV measures the autonomic nervous system. It has been well-researched and can help a person understand their ability to adapt to and recover from stress. Many people use this technology to determine whether or not their body can handle the stress of working out on a given day. Maybe they can handle doing high-intensity training one day, but their body would do better with a day off or with low-impact exercise the next. There are many different lifestyle changes you can make to help improve your overall health. HRV technology can help give you feedback to see if what you're doing is actually benefiting you. It can even tell you your biological age and rate of aging. You really can't take your health to the next level if you can't measure it. This is a fantastic and easy-to-use tool to help you do that right at home.
