Dave Proctor is back on the show for the third time. Since we last spoke in the spring of 2022, he's become the fastest person to run across Canada AND a published author! On May 15th, 2022, the ultrarunning legend from Okotoks, AB started running west from St. John's, NL, followed in the footsteps of his hero Terry Fox, traversed over 7100 kilometers, and arrived in Victoria, BC 67 days, 10 hrs and 27 minutes later, breaking Al Howie's 31 year old record by 5 days. In case you're having trouble comprehending this incredible feat of human endurance, it breaks down to an average of 105.3 kms a day for 67 days in a row with no days off. Dave had attempted the record once before in 2018 when he ran in the opposite direction for an entirely different cause, but was forced to stop about halfway near Winnipeg, MB due to crippling back pain.Dave does not hold anything back in the pages of his newly-released book Untethered. Of course he shares about the incredible highs of conquering his long standing dream of running across our beautiful country in record time, but he's also transparent about the toll it took on his body, his mind and his relationships. Dave believes we're all capable of so much, but also that true strength lies in our ability to be vulnerable. In this book he brings us along on the highs and lows he endured on his Trans-Canadian speed record and the devastating months that followed. I'm re-releasing this interview because Matt just won the 48 hour category at Across the Years!!! A few months ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Matt Shepard (Shep) - a Canadian runner and someone I'm proud to call my friend. After meeting Matt a year ago, he and I will connect every couple months to discuss training, nutrition, life, and what's been going on. And that's exactly what this was. A conversation between friends about hard things. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. NOTE: Matt was nice enough to carve some time out of his busy schedule, but that meant he had to record this outside after driving for hours to his current job location. The wind gets a little rough at times, but for the most part behaves itself. I hope you're willing to overlook the less-than-perfect audio quality. ----- Notes: Trail maintenance Color blindness How Matt started running ultras Matt's ultimate dream A broken pelvis... We have Dave Proctor with us this week, if you don't already know Dave why not check out episode #98 where we dive into the backyard ultra. Almost three years later we are touching base again, this time to discuss the trials and tribulations of breaking the land speed record of running the 7,159km across Canada. Starting in Newfoundland and ending in British Columbia, it took just over two months for Dave to break Al Howie's long standing speed record of 72 days 10hrs. In just 67 days 10hrs, with an average of 105 - 106km a day, with a consistent daily finishing time of around 10 – 11hrs, this has to be one of the most outstanding ultrarunning achievements of our era. Dave doesn't disappoint as he shares his methods of dealing with the pain, fueling strategies, the highs during the challenge and lows that follow. Some great links to find out more... Today we discuss a subject that's not talked about nearly enough….the DNF (did not finish). We start by sharing about our most recent DNFs which happened for entirely different reasons. Then we explore:Other reasons why a DNF might happenHow much dwelling on it is productiveWhy processing your feelings is importantHow to mine for any hidden lessonsWhat we mean by “little quits” and what to do if they become a patternHow to move on from a DNF and even help others in the processWhy forgiving yourself is key We hope this episode is informative & instructive, and for anyone who has experienced a DNF or disappointing race in their running career, we also hope it makes you feel less alone. This week I had the pleasure of interviewing Matt Shepard (Shep) - a Canadian runner and someone I'm proud to call my friend. Well, you'll have to listen to this episode to find out, as Joe shares the answer and it may surprise you. Not only is Joe a successful startup CEO, but he is also an endurance athlete. I'm talking about someone who is pushing their body to the ultimate limits… things like running a marathon a day for six days across six continents which is something that Joe accomplished.
