National Recovery Month focuses on providing support for families that deal with recovering from alcohol abuse, on Sept. 14th. Food insecurity in Marion County is a problem that carries significant stigma for families facing hunger. The County is working with churches and community organizations, and urges the public to support their efforts. Communications and 9-1-1 operators are being trained and accredited nationally, and are being recognized for exceptional performance compared with other communities. Lisa has many labels: a person in recovery, a queer lesbian, multi-religious, and a single mom who created her family through international adoption. She continues to work on her recovery daily and is grateful to be sober.

They talk about how the “War on Drugs” was racially motivated, the experience of Black folks in the recovery community through a new initiative Black Faces and Black Voices and why it is hard for the Black communities to publicly grieve.
