This week, we talk with our favorite Newspace Buccaneer, Jeffrey Manber. When so many people were touting their private spaceflight dreams in the 1980s, Manber took the next enormous stride and actually made it happen. He formed the Office of Space Commerce within the US Department of Commerce at the invitation of the Reagan administration, forged the first commercial relations with the then-Soviet Union, bridged that into the post-USSR period, and was responsible for the first commercial spaceflight to the then-mothballed Soviet-era Mir space station with a crew that stayed there for 70 days. He then went on to develop a variety of commercial space enterprises, from the first commercial platform to release smallsats from the ISS to initiating the Bishop airlock that became part of the space station. He also started Nanoracks, the first privately developed and standardized satellite deployment mechanism to fly. Finally, he initiated Starlab, the private space station currently under development by Voyager Technologies and a consortium of aerospace companies. In this episode of the Outlaw God podcast, Dr. Stephen Paulson and Caleb Keith explore the complexities of the biblical narrative surrounding Moses, particularly through the lens of 2 Corinthians. They discuss the misinterpretations of Moses, the role of Pseudo-Dionysius and humanism in shaping Christian thought, and the critical distinction between law and gospel. Paulson emphasizes that Moses' ministry is one of death, contrasting it with the life-giving Spirit through the gospel. The discussion also touches on Nietzsche's critique of Christian humility and the implications of Moses' veil as a symbol of misunderstanding the law's purpose. 00:00 Introduction to the Outlaw God Podcast 01:00 Exploring 2 Corinthians and the Story of Moses 02:18 Luther's Revelation on Moses and the Law 03:59 Humanism and the Fraudulent Teachings 05:41 The Donation of Constantine and Its Impact 07:22 Pseudo-Dionysius and His Influence on Christian Thought 10:50 Paul's Perspective on Moses in 2 Corinthians 16:19 Distinguishing Law from Gospel 19:39 The Assurance of the Gospel vs. the Law 21:40 Nietzsche's Critique of Christian Morality 23:37 The Problem of False Humility in Society 25:22 Understanding the Law vs. the Gospel 27:03 Moses: The Ministry of Death 31:35 The Veil of Moses: Mysticism vs. Truth 36:30 The End of the Law and the Glory of the Spirit 40:38 Moses' Role and the Transformation through the Gospel Show Notes: Support 1517 Podcast Network 1517 Podcasts 1517 on Youtube 1517 Podcast Network on Apple Podcasts 1517 Events Schedule 1517 Academy - Free Theological Education What's New from 1517: Coming Home for Christmas: 1517 Advent Devotional Face to Face: A Novel of the Reformation by Amy Mantravadi Untamed Prayers: 365 Daily Devotions on Christ in the Book of Psalms by Chad Bird Remembering Your Baptism: A 40-Day Devotional by Kathryn Morales Sinner Saint by Luke Kjolhaug More from the hosts: Caleb Keith Steven Paulson

Real Life Runners I Tying Running and Health into a Family-Centered Life
In this week's episode, I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Kate Edwards, a physical therapist with more than 15 years of experience and someone who brings so much compassion and clarity to the running community. From the very beginning, I knew this conversation would resonate deeply with runners who struggle with identity, injury, stress, or the constant pressure to “do it all.”Kate shares how her journey into running medicine was shaped not only by her clinical background but also by her own experiences navigating significant health challenges. That perspective gives her a rare depth of understanding — one that so many runners will feel seen and supported by.We spend a lot of time talking about athletic identity, because it's something I see runners wrestle with every single day. It's so easy for running to become the biggest part of who we are… until something shifts. Injury, life changes, burnout, or even a tough training cycle can shake that identity. Kate and I dig into why building a more balanced sense of self not only supports your emotional well-being but also plays a major role in injury prevention and longevity in the sport. We also explore the true complexity of running injuries, RED-S, stress, fueling (especially for female runners), and why understanding yourself as a whole human — not just an athlete — is essential for long-term health. Kate does an incredible job unpacking these topics in a way that feels both empowering and practical, giving runners a clearer picture of how their body, mind, and lifestyle all fit together. If you've ever felt “less than” when you're not running your best, or if you're craving a more sustainable, joyful relationship with your training, this conversation is absolutely for you.Connect with Dr. Kate Edwards:https://www.fastbananas.com/ https://www.instagram.com/katemihevcedwards/05:22 The Importance of Athletic Identity12:01 The Impact of Injury on Identity13:41 Finding New Outlets and Coping Strategies23:00 Understanding Running Injuries26:30 The Role of Physical Therapists28:13 Stress and Its Impact on Runners35:51 Understanding Relative Energy Deficiency in SpJoin the 30 Day Running Reset and get a plan that will help you build a strong and injury-proof body by combining running and strength training in a way that actually works for runners like you.Gain access to my new secret podcast, Unbreakable: The Runner's Guide To Injury-Proofing Your Body After 40. Whether you're a legal eagle or just curious about how our justice system really works, this episode peels back the layers of a question that's more complicated than it seems. Steve Palmer and law student Troy Henricksen answer the question - should jury deliberations be recorded? This topic was sparked by a thought-provoking listener comment, and they examine whether adding cameras or audio equipment to the deliberation room could help ensure justice, or if it would erode the very foundation of our jury system.Together, they walk through the practical, historical, and ethical implications of such recordings, exploring everything from the psychology of being watched to the slippery slope of judicial oversight. You'll hear about the deep roots of the jury process, why secrecy is considered sacred, and real-world scenarios where recording could have changed outcomes. They even touch on how Hollywood has tackled jury misconduct and why, despite its intrigue, recording deliberations could open a Pandora's box no one wants to confront.Moments00:00 "Judgment, Intervention, and Consequences"05:32 "Studio Syndrome and Self-Consciousness"07:54 "Jury Oversight and Its Impact"11:14 Jury Rights and Misconduct Discussion14:01 "Office Case: Video Evidence"16:19 "Jury Misconduct in 12 Angry Men"Here are 3 key takeaways:Sanctity of Deliberations: Recording jury deliberations would undermine the free, honest exchange we rely on for justice—jurors might perform for the camera, not for the cause of truth.Scope Creep Is Real: Once those recordings exist, it's only a matter of time before someone wants to review, challenge, or legislate over their content. This opens the door to meddling and second-guessing, ultimately weakening the jury's independence.Exceptions vs. The Rule: While egregious misconduct (like bringing outside evidence) does allow for review and intervention, the rare exception shouldn't justify upending centuries-old protections that ensure jury autonomy.Got a question you want answered on the podcast? Get yourself a Crotch Pot: https://snp.link/cd93a18dIn this solo Month of Jeff episode, I go deep on one of the strangest and coolest studies I have read in a while. It looks at capsaicin, the compound that makes hot peppers spicy, and how a small 12 milligram capsule taken before exercise can actually make you faster, more powerful, and more resistant to fatigue without raising heart rate or perceived effort. I break down what the researchers found, how it works on the brain, nerves, and muscles, and whether you should be popping pepper pills before your next workout. From there I talk about why the classic 10 percent rule is being used wrong, and why it is your longest run, not your total weekly mileage, that really drives injury risk. I get into how I think about long runs and intensity in my own coaching, and why slow, boring progress is still the best way to stay healthy.I also wander through crotch pots and backcountry bidets as gift ideas, putting down your phone and reclaiming boredom, Thanksgiving with 30 people, why AI scares me for books and movies, and the difference between style and fashion on planes, and trails.Chapters00:00 Introduction to the Month of Jeff01:54 The Crotch Pot: A Unique Hiking Gadget04:42 Capsaicin and Its Impact on Athletic Performance09:27 Rethinking the 10% Rule in Running11:46 The Importance of Disconnecting from Technology14:03 Thanksgiving Reflections and Family Gatherings15:29 Concerns About AI and Creativity17:20 Fashion vs. Style: Perception and Personality20:39 The Evolving Landscape of Sports and SponsorshipsSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside

We dive deep into how massive efficiency gains from AI are revolutionizing startups, allowing companies to run much leaner than ever before. Amanda explains her approach of Seed strapping—taking outside capital just once to get the initial product, like Navigator or the B2B directory, off the ground, and then relying on rapid revenue reinvestment to accelerate growth and preserve equity. She reveals that between 50% and 60% of their code is now AI generated, and we discuss the possibility of the first single person unicorn company. We focus heavily on practical AI frameworks, including how Amanda uses ChatGPT's operator as a "proof of concept" to validate whether or not a function can be automated before investing further. We break down the differences between using ChatGPT versus Claude, with Amanda emphasizing that Claude is often superior for creating "tighter" projects that involve deep research and dynamic artifacts. Plus, she shares her incredible "cheat code" for turning historical figures or admired business leaders—like Edwin Land or Elon Musk—into specialized AI thought partners by curating their transcripts and distillations. She even offers a starting point for any business owner looking to dive into AI for the first time.Enjoy the conversation!__________________________Questions This Episode Answers:What is Seed strapping and how can it help founders preserve equity? How much leaner can a modern company run now that AI can generate code? What is the "genius framework" for using operator to validate the feasibility of automation? How can you use Claude projects to create a specialized AI thought partner out of business idols?Should you use ChatGPT or Claude as your primary AI workhorse for data projects?__________________________Love it or hate it, I'd love your feedback. Please fill out this brief survey with your opinion or email me at nik@cofounders.com with your thoughts.__________________________MY NEWSLETTER: https://nikolas-newsletter-241a64.beehiiv.com/subscribeSpotify: https://tinyurl.com/5avyu98yApple: https://tinyurl.com/bdxbr284YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/nikonomicsYT__________________________This week we covered:00:00 The Rise of AI and Its Impact on Business02:55 Seed Strapping: A New Approach to Funding06:07 Leveraging AI for Efficiency and Growth09:04 Using AI as a Thought Partner11:51 Data Management and Analysis with AI15:06 The Future of AI in Business17:58 Practical Applications of AI Tools21:10 Navigating AI for Business Owners

News stories are filled with tales of risk and uncertainty. We're told the probable chance of a weather event or how likely it is that we might contract an illness. There's an art to telling stories with uncertainty that provides context and nuance that is often missing. That is the focus of this episode of Stats+Stories with guest David Spiegelhalter. Sir David Spiegelhalter is a British statistician and Emeritus Professor at the University of Cambridge, known for his work on risk communication and public understanding of statistics. He is the author of The Art of Statistics, a former President of the Royal Statistical Society, and was knighted in 2014 for his services to medical statistics. He also presented BBC documentaries and is the founder of the Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication at Cambridge. You think you're rational? Think again. We love feeling like thoughtful decision-makers, but the truth is we're riddled with cognitive shortcuts. Daniel Kahneman's Nobel Prize-winning work breaks down the systems of our mind. We constantly substitute hard questions with easy ones; e.g. Buying a stock because you like the company, not because you've done the data. This episode cuts through the 300,000-word book to show you exactly how these shortcuts lead to everything from bad investments to pointless stress about the weather. It's time to stop letting your brain's simple tricks run your whole life. Stop overestimating the importance of your current stress. Identify and reduce low-level daily pains (like a bad commute) for massive life returns. Implement a "sleep-on-it" rule to override System 1's instant commitments. Why let a lazy brain ruin your best decisions? Start thinking slower today. Further Reading: Thinking Fast and Slow - Daniel Kahneman Predictably Irrational - Dan Ariely SPONSORS

In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the use of AI within the Church, and when and how it might be used. There's no question that AI has become ubiquitous in our world. And while it might not bother you to know that your grocery store, for example, uses AI to generate suggestions to improve your shopping experience, how would you feel knowing that your pastor used AI to write this weekend's message? Episode Links Alexis mentioned a study conducted by Barna last year about pastors and their use of AI, which found that 12% said they felt comfortable using AI to write their sermons. You can read more details in an article about the findings on NPR HERE. Dr. White does not share that level of comfort. In fact, he wrote a blog earlier this year titled “Why I Won't Use AI for Writing,” outlining his reason for making this decision. You can read that blog in its entirety HERE. And if you're interested in viewing the scene from Walk the Line that Dr. White talked about related to that blog entry, you can watch that on YouTube HERE. AI is entering the Church in places other than pastors' sermons. Dr. White wrote another blog simply titled “AI Jesus” about a Catholic chapel in Switzerland where an avatar of “Jesus” was tucked into a confessional booth and parishioners could come and confess their sins and ask it questions. You can read that blog HERE. There are a number of articles that provided information linked to today's episode or that were mentioned during the conversation. Should you wish to read more about the ways that AI is impacting our culture and the life of the Church, you can find those below: Lila Shroff, “ChatGPT Gave Instructions for Murder, Self-Mutilation, and Devil Worship,” The Atlantic. Jocelyn Gecker, “Teens say they are turning to AI for friendship,” AP News. Deena Prichep, “Are AI sermons ethical? Clergy consider where to draw the line.” Religion News Service. James Titcomb, “Musk launches AI girlfriend available to 12-year-olds,” The Telegraph. Steven Lee Myers & Stuart A. Thompson, “Right-Wing Chatbots Turbocharge America's Political and Cultural Wars,” The New York Times. Emma Roth, “Sam Altman says ChatGPT will soon sext with verified adults,” The Verge. Rebecca Bellan, “California becomes first state to regulate AI companion chatbots,” TechCrunch. Lee V. Gaines, “1 in 5 high schoolers has had a romantic AI relationship, or knows someone who has,” NPR. Chloe Veltman, “AI's getting better at faking crowds. Here's why that's cause for concern,” NPR. Howard Blume & Jocelyn Gecker, “What counts as cheating with AI? Teachers are grappling with how to draw the line,” Los Angeles Times. Brian Kennedy et al., “How Americans View AI and Its Impact on People and Society,” Pew Research Center. Lauren Jackson, “Finding God in the App Store,” The New York Times. Finally, Dr. White discussed how parents need to be so aware of how and when their kids are using technology and AI. The Meck Institute at Mecklenburg Community Church has an on-demand class called “FaceTime: What Parents Need to Know About Technology, Social Media, Video Games and More,” which you can find HERE. In this episode of The Winston Marshall Show, I sit down with Allison Pearson, journalist and columnist at The Telegraph, for a revealing conversation about the collapse of Britain's asylum system, media bias, and the cultural denial gripping the political class.Allison exposes how caseworkers are being forced to grant asylum to known sex offenders and violent men, including those on the sex offenders register, due to loopholes in Britain's asylum laws. Drawing on her bombshell reporting, she explains how hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants have vanished into the system, how Home Office staff are incentivised to approve asylum claims without vetting, and how police and terror checks were suspended to meet political targets. We discuss the BBC's censorship and bias, the moral blindness of Britain's ruling elites, and what Allison calls the nation's “suicidal empathy” — a refusal to protect its own people out of fear of being called racist. From asylum hotels and rising community tensions to the far-centrism of the establishment, this is an unflinching look at how Britain lost control of its borders and what it will take to reclaim them.Check out Allison's podcast with Liam Halligan, Planet Normal here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJnf_DDTfIVC4Y-6d5MVBccDib2wsOhXa-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------To see more exclusive content and interviews consider subscribing to my substack here: https://www.winstonmarshall.co.uk/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------FOLLOW ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Substack: https://www.winstonmarshall.co.uk/X: https://twitter.com/mrwinmarshallInsta: https://www.instagram.com/winstonmarshallLinktree: https://linktr.ee/winstonmarshall----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Chapters 00:00 Introduction 01:56 Shocking Revelations from Allison's investigation 03:49 Challenges in the Asylum System09:33 Automatic Asylum and Loopholes18:47 Historical Context and Broader Implications22:34 Impact on Rural Communities 43:22 Media Bias and the BBC 49:11 Far Centrism and Its Consequences 1:05:44 Allison's Social Media “offence”1:08:07 Legal Action and Broader Implications1:20:02 Impact of Public Speech and Legal Consequences1:22:45 Multiculturalism and Its Impact on Free Speech1:26:26 Historical Context and Legal Responses1:27:39 Final Thoughts Hosted on Acast. They discuss the emergence of red light therapy, its scientific basis, and its applications in treating various health issues, particularly obesity and metabolic health. The conversation emphasizes the importance of innovative healing technologies and their potential to transform lives. In this conversation, Dr. Jeffrey Gladden and Dr. Mike Renzulli explore the evolution of healthcare from merely managing symptoms to addressing root causes through precision medicine. They discuss innovative approaches to weight loss, the importance of detoxification, and the role of GLP-1 medications. The conversation emphasizes the significance of body composition over weight alone, the impact of fasting, and the necessity of a systems approach to health optimization, including thyroid function and oxidative stress management. Ultimately, they advocate for personalized solutions tailored to individual needs for lasting health improvements. Takeaways Dr. Renzulli's early inspiration for healthcare came from witnessing a life-saving moment. His journey led him to explore holistic approaches after observing disillusionment in traditional doctors. Red light therapy emerged as a significant tool in his practice, offering innovative health solutions. The design and proximity of red light beds are crucial for effective treatment outcomes. Different wavelengths of light have varying effects on the body, from skin rejuvenation to deeper tissue healing. Red light therapy can enhance ATP production and reduce oxidative stress. Integrating red light therapy with other treatments can improve metabolic health and energy levels. Obesity is a growing epidemic, and red light therapy can play a role in weight loss. The technology behind red light therapy is backed by numerous studies and evidence-based results. Patients experience significant improvements in health and well-being through these innovative therapies. Patients are increasingly seeking root cause solutions rather than just symptom management. Precision medicine offers real hope and tangible results for patients. Weight loss strategies must focus on detoxification and cellular health. Inflammation is a key factor in weight gain and insulin resistance. A systematic approach to health can yield better outcomes than isolated treatments. Body composition is a more important metric than weight alone. GLP-1 medications can have adverse effects on muscle and bone density. Fasting can be beneficial if done correctly, focusing on fat loss rather than muscle loss. Precision medicine requires a deep understanding of individual genetics and biology. A comprehensive approach to health includes monitoring thyroid function and metabolic rates.
