Episode 406 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Bill Simmons, serial entrepreneur and Co-Founder of Orbit.me and DataXu. I'm going to use the cliché: Bill actually is a rocket scientist. His background is in aerospace engineering, he holds a PhD from MIT, and he worked on 13 space missions. In addition, he was part of a major Government competition for simulating options for space travel to Mars. His team simulated 35 billion possible options to generate 1,100 different Mars missions that were all feasible. This groundbreaking technology that leverage Big Data, which we now recognize as AI and machine learning, launched his first company, DataXu, in 2008. DataXu became a pioneer in the programmatic ad platform category and raised over $87M in funding. The company scaled as a major player in the Boston tech scene, and was acquired by Roku in 2019. Now, Bill is tackling a challenge we all likely face with his new startup, Orbit.me. Information is scattered across texts, multiple email inboxes, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and social apps—it's impossible to keep track of what matters. Orbit.me is a perfect use case for AI, organizing your scattered messages into “Orbits” which are dedicated spaces built around the real contexts of your life, like parenting, work, or other important matters. For the past dozen years, Hoover's online publication Strategika has examined contemporary conflicts and national security challenges by assembling academics of varied thought to re-examine past struggles. On the occasion of its 100th issue, historian Victor Davis Hanson, Hoover's Martin and Ilie Anderson senior fellow and the man tasked with bringing the publication to life, discusses the institution's growing commitment to the study of history (Hoover's having a compliment of historians rivaling that of world-class universities) and how a Strategika-like approach explains complicated conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. Also discussed: how Victor's passion for military history stems from his male ancestors' involvement in two world wars, his thoughts on how best to introduce young learners to classical opuses, plus the problem of university history departments discouraging intellectual diversity. Google's AI is poised to wipe out half of news publishers' traffic, but Barry Adams isn't here to panic—he's here to bring the hard truths (with a side of hope). On this week's EDGE of the Web, we dive deep into how Google's relentless AI advancements, from overviews to the new AI mode, threaten the very foundation of news publishing. Join host Erin Sparks and News SEO specialist Barry Adams as they break down the seismic shifts hitting news publishers: AI overviews stealing clicks, Top Stories boxes protecting (for now), and why AI mode is a technological hand grenade waiting to go off. Barry shares what's working, what's not, and why keeping up with Google's user experience data from the Chrome browser is harder than ever. We cover how publishers can future-proof themselves—think personalization, paywalls, and bundling—before Google fully flips the AI switch. Side quest: Ever wondered how to train your audience to pay for news in a world where everything's free (thanks, Google)? Barry makes a compelling case for why quality, unique journalism is more vital than ever—even if it means surviving on half your pie. Wrap up by buckling in for the impending Google traffic apocalypse, arming yourself with Barry's don't-panic (but have your towel) wisdom, and getting the inside scoop on what grows in the new AI-powered world of news. In this episode of Gangland Wire, retired Kansas City Intelligence detective Gary Jenkins sits down with veteran Chicago journalist Chuck Goudie, whose decades of reporting have made him one of Chicago's most respected voices on organized crime. A fan of the show asked for more Chicago stories—and this conversation delivers. We dive into the legacy of the Spilotro family, sparked by the recent passing of John Spilotro, brother of the infamous Las Vegas mob figure Tony Spilotro. Chuck shares his reflections on how the Outfit has evolved, from its heyday of dominance in gambling, loansharking, and union racketeering to its much smaller—yet still persistent—presence today. Together, we revisit the Outfit's historic ties to the Teamsters, the Strawman trials, and the legendary names like Anthony Accardo who shaped Chicago's mob identity. Chuck solves a mystery and provides the name of the man who killed Sam Giancana. Chuck also offers personal insights into how mob families navigated the push and pull of blood ties, with some members rising into notoriety while others tried to lead straight lives under the shadow of organized crime. Our conversation shifts to Chuck's recent investigative work on the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa, exploring the long-standing theories and mob connections that keep the story alive decades later. This episode blends history, reflection, and storytelling—offering both an inside look at Chicago's Outfit and a reminder of why these stories still captivate us today. 1:02 The Legacy of John Drummond 4:11 Current Status of the Outfit 7:28 The Last of the Spilotro Family 10:02 Family Dynamics of the Spilotros 13:18 Frank Calabrese's Las Vegas Fame 13:25 Giancana's Murder Investigation and who did it 18:18 Surveillance in the Giancana Case 22:03 The Straw Man Trials 25:40 Ken Eto's Gangland Story 27:52 Investigating Jimmy Hoffa's Disappearance 31:03 Closing Thoughts with Chuck Goudie Subscribe to Gangland Wire wherever you get your podcasts, and join us each week as we uncover the stories buried beneath the headlines—and the bodies. This is Gary Jenkins, retired Kansas City Police Intelligence Unit detective here in Kansas City. And, you know, guys, I have, I was talking with a fan not too long ago from Chicago, I think on the, maybe the Facebook group, and he said, you need to do more Chicago stories. And I had to admit, I hadn't done that many Chicago stories. I got caught up in New York a lot, It seemed like, and anyhow, we're back to Chicago and another guy's mentioned to another guy and we were talking and, and somebody said, I don't remember who, maybe that original fan said you need to get Chuck Goudie on there. He's been doing a lot of reporting on the outfit over the years. And I didn't really know who Chuck was. So I started searching. He did a recent story about the death of the last spilotro brother, John spilotro. So I thought, man, this is, this is it. This is what I got to do. So welcome, Chuck Goudie from Chicago. Well, it's quite an introduction. Some might call it a eulogy, but thankfully that's not what he does. [1:02] Really? Now, I think I told you earlier, you know, last time I interviewed a Chicago newsman, it was John Bulldog Drummond. Bulldog Drummond, I tell you what, he was the dean of Chicago newsmen, television newsmen, when it came to reporting on the mob. There's no doubt about it.

The climate crisis is not a tragedy. It's a crime. The July 4 signing of HR1, is the latest if not the greatest climate crime considering the current state of the earth's energy imbalance or the ever-increasing amount of atmospheric GHG emissions that trap infrared radiation (heat) causing planetary warming. It's estimated the OBBBA will over just the next five years add an extra seven billion tons of GHG emissions into the atmosphere - equal to more than one-years' worth of total annual US carbon emissions. While it had been projected the US would reduce GHG emissions this decade by upwards of 43%, or get close us to a 50-52% reduction to align with the 2015 Paris Accord, the OBBBA will now reduce carbon emissions this decade by just 17%. The legislation rescinds virtually all IRA renewable energy tax credits while further subsidizing fossil fuels. Bryan Kohberger: How We Got Here - Episode 10: "Setting the Stage for Trial - Current Status and What Lies Ahead" Description: In our final episode, we examine where the case stands as trial approaches and analyze what this case means for the future of criminal justice in America. With jury selection beginning July 30th, 2025, we explore the challenges of finding impartial jurors in one of the most publicized cases in recent memory, despite the large Ada County jury pool. This episode analyzes the strengths and weaknesses each side brings to trial, from the prosecution's seemingly overwhelming DNA and digital evidence to the defense's constitutional challenges and alternate theories. We examine the key factors that will likely determine the trial's outcome, including the genetic genealogy evidence facing its first major courtroom test and the interpretation of complex digital forensics. The episode explores the lasting impact this case has already had on criminal justice, from the use of emerging forensic technologies to the challenges of ensuring fair trials in the social media age. We also reflect on the permanent changes to the University of Idaho and Moscow community, and consider how this case will influence law enforcement, legal education, and criminal procedure for years to come. Finally, we remember the four young victims whose lives were cut short and whose memory deserves justice. I'm back with another interview with Dr. Bob Dickson on the topic of water fluoridation. What is it with our "esteemed" scientists and their insistence that poisons introduced through various means can protect us and make us healthy? How is it that so many have fallen for this ludicrous claim? To think that we are dealing with having fluoride added to the Calgary municipal water supply on the heels of the US ruling that such fluoride is a neurotoxin is beyond comprehension and infuriating for those who are actually informed.Dr. Bob goes into his extensive involvement in the movement against fluoridation, detailing his initial discovery of the potential harms and his efforts to remove it from Calgary's water. He covers the toxicity of hexafluorosilicic acid - check out the MSDS here https://www.fishersci.com/store/msds?partNumber=AC410715000&productDescription=FLUOSILICIC+ACID+%2825%25+IN+500GR&vendorId=VN00032119&countryCode=US&language=en - the legal and ethical implications of mass medication, and the recent scientific studies showing the minimal benefits and significant risks, including neurotoxicity. They also discuss the political and financial forces driving fluoridation despite these risks.Dr. Dickson encourages listeners to take action by signing petitions and contacting local representatives to halt the fluoridation process.01:10 The Fluoride Issue in Calgary01:28 Dr. Bob Dickson's Advocacy Journey04:07 The History of Fluoridation in Calgary09:20 Scientific Studies and Findings on Fluoride – not a pretty picture16:22 The Fight Against Fluoridation22:14 Recent Developments and Legal Battles30:17 Economic and Environmental Implications34:08 Current Status and Future Actions38:20 Election and Council's Stance on Fluoridation38:55 Health Risks and Environmental Impact39:34 Detoxifying and Purifying Water40:02 Truth About Fluoride and Filtration Systems41:17 Fighting City Council and Legal Battles43:51 Personal Attacks and Advocacy46:31 Fluoridation's Impact on Vulnerable Populations59:21 Global and Local Fluoridation Statistics – we are a minority here01:05:05 Call to Action and Final ThoughtsPlease share this interview, everyone needs to be properly informed on this topic... whether you are living already with fluoridated tap water or if you may face this issue in the future. What happens when a Hollywood star stands up to sexual harassment on set? In this episode, entertainment lawyer Anne Easton joins us to unravel the legal and ethical firestorm sparked by Blake Lively's recent case. Blake Lively made headlines by accusing her It Ends With Us co-star and director, Justin Baldoni, of sexual harassment — and then faced an alleged smear campaign in retaliation. Anne brings an insider perspective from the world of entertainment law, helping us make sense of this high-profile Hollywood showdown in a conversational, insightful way.We tackle tough questions around celebrity privacy and image rights — how much control can an actor really have over their image and personal information once a story goes public? We also examine how the Me Too movement has changed the film industry, and what it takes to create a truly safe workplace environment in filmmaking today.Anne breaks down the concept of retaliation in plain language, exploring whether smear campaigns like the one Lively alleges can be considered illegal retaliation under entertainment law. She highlights what legal protections exist for those who speak up against misconduct, and where gaps still need to be filled. From the role of intimacy coordinators on set to new laws designed to protect whistleblowers, we cover it all in a clear, down-to-earth way.Beyond this case, Anne's perspective — shaped by years of advising both major studios and independent filmmakers — adds nuance to every insight. She even shares a peek at her own upcoming creative nonfiction book project, revealing her passion for storytelling beyond the courtroom. It's a candid, eye-opening discussion that's equal parts Hollywood drama and practical advice on building safer, more respectful film sets. Tune in to learn how Hollywood is changing and what it means for anyone who wants a safer, more equitable filmmaking world. No DocuView Déjà Vu Timecodes00:00 Introduction to the Blake Lively Case03:12 Understanding the Legal Context06:04 The Background of the Case09:10 Claims of Sexual Harassment12:04 Retaliation and Public Perception14:52 Legal Implications for Filmmakers17:59 Creating a Safe Set Environment21:04 Navigating Power Dynamics on Set23:55 Preventative Measures in Filmmaking26:50 The Aftermath and Public Image Rights32:39 Legal Standards for Public Figures34:12 Image Rights and Public Figures36:32 The Importance of Image Rights40:42 Lessons from Blake Lively's Case42:27 Current Status of Legal Proceedings45:26 The Importance of Behavior in Legal Matters46:13 Understanding Your Rights in Media48:08 Anne's New Documentary Project Sponsor: http://ArtillerySports.com Use the code DocFirst for 10% off your order today!
