Bobby was born in South Africa and went to University basically to study to become a coach, He started by coaching middle and long distance track runners and went on to coach road runners and marathoners. Bobby moved to Boulder in the US in 1992 , and started coaching triathletes. 8:23 - Bobby currently coaches Victoria Lopez, Taylor Knibb, Flora Duffy, Kirsten Kasper along with other pro and amatuer athletes. 10:21 - When coaching elite triathletes, it's important to consider the athletes biomechanics. For instance long distance swimmers often have low bone density and therefore do not perform as strong runners due to the rigors of long distance running, so as a coach it's important to understand and set training expectations specifically for each individual. Bobby's book: Magical Running - A Unique path to running fulfillment 15:59 - Bobby's fascination of the bio mechanics of running came about as he could see a connection between certain running motion patterns and the tendency of getting injured. I use to say: I don't teach people how to run, I help people get back to the best running that they are capable of. Good running form looks very differently depending on the individual's genetics, one has to have a very different approach to someone with for instance long torso and short legs compared to someone with a more natural body composition for running. Also, factors like running background (has the athlete practiced plenty of speed work or come from an endurance background?) matters in how Bobby approaches individuals running technique. 20:06 - Rewinding the clock. Bobby describes his youth and pathway through younger years to discover his passion for running, and then coaching, including serving time in the South African Military. 37:54 - Shifting to mindset and performance, Bobby describes the advice he would give an athlete struggling with confidence. Being aware and knowing how your thoughts affect you is crucial in order to perform. Bobby feels that there is no right or wrong way to prepare mentally for competition, some people are super calm before races and perform well and others are extremely nervous and also perform well. Many age groupers (especially males) tend to overestimate their performance and hence set themselves up for failure by not being able to rise to their expectations. Don't doubt yourself, "The only thing you should doubt, is the doubt". The only thing you should doubt, is the doubt. 41:53 - When it comes to an athlete feeling failure, Bobby explains his techniques that he applies to his athletes. Bobby's golden rule - There is what happened ... then there is 'what are you making it mean to you'. Meaning and interpretation affect an athlete's mindset. 48:23 - Different type of run drills are great in order to achieve a change in running style. The purpose of drills are basically to exaggerate a specific movement. Drills play three different roles: First, you're trying to address a mechanical anomaly that the athlete has gotten into, the second reason is to do it as an activation exercise and the last role is for muscle endurance or power purposes. One also needs to make sure that the athlete has the strength, mobility and balance to run in a specific way. When approaching your running technique, one must be rather careful, this is an area where the wrong tips can get the opposite effect on your performance. 57:27 - First two laws of mechanics. The first rule is to never trust what you feel, you think you run a certain way but when you look into the mirror it rarely looks like what you first thought. The second rule is that if you want to achieve a change, you need to exaggerate the movement (this is also very applicable to swimming). 1:04:26 - The Run Transformation Course is a membership-based training program put together by Bobby McGee and is available at his website. First the British superstar had to overcome a blip right at the start as he fell to his knees on the beach before rising to play catchup. Yee and Wilde, who seemed to be joined by the hip after exiting the water side by side and spending the majority of the bike ride together, were inseparable throughout the first three laps of the run, before Yee eventually got the better of the Kiwi in a sprint to the line. Defending world champion Leo Bergere of France got back on a podium with third, as Les Bleus swept 3-4-5 with Pierre Le Corre and Dorian Coninx enjoying strong races. Swim – Dévay leads the way Over the course of a choppy sea swim off the coast of Sardinia, the men's race didn't follow the same script as the women's competition just hours earlier, with the majority of the field coming out of the water within touching distance. Over the first lap, Frenchman Dorian Coninx led the way, with the South African duo of Henri Schoeman and Jamie Riddle hot on his heels coming out for the Australian exit at halfway. Hungarian athlete Márk Dévay, a former World Aquathlon champion, was also up there, as was WTCS leader heading into today, Vasco Vilaca. By the end of the swim, things where more of the same at the front, with Dévay keeping things honest as he lead out of the water, with Riddle, Schoeman, Coninx, Vilaca and a number of others close by. Most importantly, Alex Yee and Hayden Wilde, two of the pre-race favourites, were just +0:15 down out of the water and in perfect position. Further back, Olympic champion Kristian Blummenfelt was just over half a minute behind at the back of the second group, with compatriot Gustav Iden ten seconds further back at +0:47 and Richard Murray of the Netherlands the last out of the water a minute down after Spaniard Mario Mola withdrew. Bike – Blummenfelt left stranded Out of transition, there was a mad scramble to make the front pack, as two dozen athletes, including Wilde, made it into the front pack, with the second group featuring the likes of Blummenfelt. The chase pack, sensing danger, worked hard over the first lap to close the gap, but was unable to, with the gap then quickly blowing out. After three laps, the gap was well over half a minute, with Wilde drilling the pace at the front of the lead group, as the chase group struggled to make back any time despite featuring the firepower of the likes of Blummenfelt and Swiss Simon Westermann, who on multiple occasions tried to drag the chasers along. By halfway, the gap was up to +0:50 with the front pack showing no signs of slowing, as Belgian Martin Van Riel, returning from a long period out with injury, returned to the front of a WTCS bike pack for the first time in close to a year. Off the bike, the gap back to Blummenfelt and the rest of the chase pack was +1:15, with the front pack, thanks to the hard work of the likes of Van Riel and Wilde, enjoying a comfortable buffer coming into transition. Lasse Lührs (GER) – 1:38:04 WTCS Cagliari 2022 results: Classy win for Georgia Taylor-Brown By Helen Gorman 8 Oct 2022 Georgia Taylor-Brown added another WTCS win in Cagliari on Saturday to extend her lead in the 2022 Series. Taylor Knibb had the extra factor on the bike, which dictated the outcome of the race in Sardinia, Italy. Taylor-Brown benefited from Knibb's hard work and then used her superior run strength to secure her third WTCS win of the season and extended her lead in the overall Series. Knibb was rewarded with bronze as Beth Potter and Cassandre Beaugrand found themselves on the wrong side of the beak and too far back to factor in the medal positions. Beaugrand ran, dived and swam away from the rest in the choppy sea before Maya Kingma and Vittoria Lopes took over, particularly on the second lap. Lopes was first to hit the timing mat after 1500m in 19:39 while Summer Rappaport, Beaugrand, Kingma and Sophie Coldwell and just about everybody else except Taylor Knibb, were bunched up with her. Potter and Taylor-Brown were 9th and 10th out, but there was really nothing separating them as they all burst into transition. Bike – All aboard the Knibb train The short transition was executed cleanly and quickly by everyone and a huge bunch left transition. The pace looked to be on from the start, but Knibb overcame a 30-second deficit from the swim and caught them by the third of 10 laps. She hit the front, blew the pack apart on the fourth lap and it was a rare moment that she wasn't on the front for the rest of the cycle leg. The British trio of Taylor-Brown, Coldwell and Waugh rode in the front group of 11 athletes, but Potter and Beaugrand were dropped. By the time the leaders hit T2, the group had put 1 min 44 seconds into the chase group, which contained Potter and Beaugrand. Advertisements Run – GTB takes control The group of 11 leaders were separated by no more than a second coming into transition, but it wasn't long before Taylor-Brown hit the front along with Knibb and Emma Lombardi. By the third of four laps, Taylor-Brown hit the front and stayed there to cross the line in front to claim another excellent victory in 2022. She said: “I just tried to run my own race and tried to stay in contact with that bike group. ABU DHABI, UAE — Showcasing an impressive start of the season, U.S. Elite Triathlon National Team member Taylor Spivey (Redondo Beach, Calif.) earned the bronze medal in the opening race of the circuit at the 2023 World Triathlon Championship Series Abu Dhabi on Friday, March 3. Crossing the line in 58 minutes and 27 seconds, the third-place finish granted Spivey her first WTCS podium since 2021 and fifth-career WTCS medal. The top-three finish also offered sweet redemption for Spivey, after she just barely missed the podium last season with three fourth-place finishes and ultimately a fourth-place overall Series ranking. “To earn the bronze medal — pleased is an understatement. At one point in the race I was in fourth place and I thought ‘I can't let this happen again!' I am not the most confident athlete and racing is a way to build my confidence. And at the end of the day, I just executed every step of the race pretty perfectly and I finally came away with a step above fourth place, I am happy with it,” Spivey said of her result. Abu Dhabi opened the season as the first of seven total stops on the 2023 WTCS calendar, with athletes returning to the same host city that crowned the World Champions last November. Placing fifth in Abu Dhabi last fall, Spivey improved her position to third on a sprint-distance course (750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike, 5k run). She finished just 31 seconds behind the victor, Beth Potter of Great Britain, who won in a time of 57:56, followed by British compatriot Sophie Coldwell with the silver (58:14). U.S. Elite Summer Rappaport (Thornton, Colo.) also had a standout season-starting result, placing fourth. After a dominating swim where was third out of the water, she crossed the finish line just 8 seconds behind Spivey to claim the fourth-place position with a time of 58:35. The race will also contribute towards the Challenge Family World Bonus and results will count towards qualification for the Challenge Family The Championship. Below are details on the start times of the races, information on how to watch, and a preview of the elite men and women that are looking to kick their season off in style in the Sunshine State. We should stress though that the start lists are very much subject to change, with a number of big names – such as Vincent Luis, Joe Skipper and Jackie Hering – initially announced but now not taking part. And there looks to be bad news on the coverage front this year, with no live pictures but instead a post-race production… POPULAR STORIES RIGHT NOW IRONMAN New Zealand 2023 results: Phillips and Visser take titles Alistair Brownlee setback as he rules himself out of IRONMAN South Africa IRONMAN explain reasons for Justine Mathieux DQ in South Africa Start time and how to follow The elite race at CLASH Endurance Miami takes place on Friday March 10th, 2023. The start times are as follows: Elite Women – 0830 local time / 1330 UK / 1430 CET Elite Men – 1200 local time / 1700 UK / 1800 CET Past editions of the event have been streamed live – and for free – on the CLASH Endurance Facebook and YouTube channels. But this week the following message was posted about current plans: “If you know CLASH Endurance, you know we're always trying new things. There will be no live coverage, however a post-race show will be released after the event.” So if you haven't got it already, then adding the CLASH Endurance app to your phone / mobile device is recommended for racing splits and results. It's pretty much identical to the layout and structure of the IRONMAN app – which given that has proven itself over many years, is a good thing. Event history and course In 2021 the event was held under the ‘Challenge Miami' banner, prior the rebranding of the Challenge Family North American events to ‘CLASH'. In 2022, CLASH provided some of the most thrilling races on American soil, in both Miami and Daytona. Homestead Miami / Challenge Miami In Miami, the race venue is the Homestead Miami Speedway, a self-enclosed motor racing circuit event. As with the Daytona International Speedway, a very convenient lake sits nicely within the centre of the circuit, primed and ready for swimmers. Unlike the racing at Daytona however, CLASH Miami utilises the roads within the racing oval, and so is far more technical than the pure straight-line speed efforts that are the focus there. The event will be raced over the following distances: Swim: 1.7km / 1.05-mile (2 laps) Bike: 62.7km / 39-miles (17 laps of 2.2 miles + one part lap to start) Run: 16.9km / 10.5 miles (7 laps of 1.5 miles) Pro Women Last year, Ashleigh Gentle dominated, with the Australian winning by almost eight minutes in a performance that really set the tone for what was in store throughout the rest of the season for the PTO World #1. This year, however, looks set to be a much more competitive race, with the absence of the defending champion from the start list really opening up the competition to a whole host of contenders. Last season's runner up, Brazil's Pamela Oliveira, is an athlete who knows what it takes to get on the podium in Miami, but will face stiff competition if she has any hopes of going one better than last season. The 35-year-old, who won IRONMAN Brasil as well as Challenge Brazil in 2022, will rely heavily on her endurance in Miami, and will have to hope her strong swim-bike combination will be enough to keep her away from some of the lightning quick runners in the field. Sara Perez Sala (ESP) and Haley Chura (USA) are also likely to be to the fore from the outset. Perez Sala, who won the Challenge Championship in 2022, before also finishing second at CLASH Daytona behind Angelica Olmo, will be hoping to build an insurmountable lead over the swim and the bike this Friday, with athletes such as Chura and Sif Bendix Madsen (DEN) the likely candidates to contribute to an early break. Sara Perez Sala The Championship 2022 Sara Perez Sala – Photo Credit: Jose Luis Hourcade Last year, Sala crashed out of CLASH Miami, so will be hoping that her return this time round will not be brought to such an abrupt end. If her winter training has gone well, expect to see her at the front from the gun and pushing hard for the win throughout the closing stages. Lastly, Lucy Byram will be flying the flag for the UK, as the 23-year-old Brit looks to build on a 2022 that featured Challenge Wales and IRONMAN 70.3 Jesolo wins, plus runner up spots at IRONMAN 70.3 Vichy and Challenge Riccione, with a strong performance Stateside. Pro Men In the men's field, defending champion Sam Long will look to take down some big names from both the ITU scene and the long course world as he races for the first time under the guidance of new coach Dr Dan Plews. Sam Long (Photo credit: CLASH Endurance Miami) Sam Long (Photo credit: CLASH Endurance Miami) More stardust was sprinkled on the event at the start of this week when Canada's Lionel Sanders announced he was a surprise addition to the field. ‘No Limits' impressed pretty much everyone at the super-sprint distance of Arena Games Montreal recently, was second on his previous appearance here in 2021 behind Jan Frodeno) and will be locking horns with Long again after their epic battle at the Collins Cup last season. Jason West (USA), runner-up here last year, will look to challenge Long as will Tom Bishop (GBR), who was an excellent fourth at CLASH Daytona late last year. Joe Skipper had been scheduled to take part but the only British man to have outperformed him in Kona, David McNamee, will look to rediscover the form that saw him take back-to-back IMWC podiums in 2018 and 2019. In addition to McNamee and Bishop is fellow Brit Kieran Lindars, who won the European Long Distance Championships at Challenge Almere and finished a respectable 11th at CLASH Daytona. Finally, internationals Matthew Sharpe (CAN) and Samuel Appleton (AUS), who have both finished sixth at CLASH events in Florida in the past, could be the only athletes with the swim ability to match Luis, setting up a potential scenario where the Frenchman has some real bike power to work alongside out on the speedway. If you've been helmet shopping in the last few years, you have no doubt seen the little yellow circle that says, “Mips” on some of the helmets and boxes. What is Mips® and why should you care? MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) was developed in Sweden, Stockholm to be exact, by a neurosurgeon and an engineer. The technology represents the intersection of academic research and industrial engineering. The research, begun in 1995, was led by Hans von Holst of the Karolinska Institute, a practicing neurosurgeon, and Peter Halldin, an engineer with a background in aeronautics. Von Holst had witnessed the devastating aftermath of numerous Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) while performing brain surgeries on his patients. This inspired him to begin looking for ways to ameliorate these types of injuries. By examining the design of commercially available helmets, he was soon convinced that the currently crop of helmets were not providing sufficient protection against brain injuries. Especially those involving rotational forces or secondary impacts after an initial impact. He then contacted the KTH (Royal Institute of Technology) about initiating a research project focused on the prevention of head and neck injuries. That's when he was introduced to Halldin who was at the time a student at the institute. Halldin then commenced a PhD program studying biomechanics in order to investigate the problem and work on engineering a solution. Together they identified the way the dura membrane was critical to the brain's ability to slide within the skull in order to prevent concussions. They hypothesized, if a low-friction area could be created between the head and the helmet, rotational force, especially from an oblique (or angular) impact like that of a cyclist falling off a bicycle, could be reduced. They enlisted the help of Nigel Mills, who had access to the types of testing equipment they would need to prove their theory was correct. During the same time period, Svein Kleiven also a PhD student at the institute, had begun work on developing an FE (Finite Element) model of the human brain. It has since been recognized as the highest fidelity computer / mathematical model of the human brain ever created. This model proved to be a key research / simulation tool for Mips®, as it made it possible to visualize and measure the effects of Mips® safety system in a variety of collisions. Human cadavers and, in some cases, living subjects would have been used for this type of analysis, but because of ethical reasons, availability and variability in experimental results, the FE computer model is infinitely preferable. Researchers and product testers can run an infinite number of simulated crash experiments without cracking any skulls. Now I know what you are thinking, “What about all those out-of-work crash test dummies?” Fret not, the FE model Kleiven developed is only for the brain, it will be some time before a complete FE model of the whole human body will be available. And Mips® and the bike helmet manufacturers still use synthetic human heads in testing. The results of their research, a 50% reduction in rotational forces as a result of a crash. This led them to publish their results in 2001 and apply for a patent in 2002 which was granted in 2003. This led to the formation of Mipscorp, the company responsible for bringing Mips® technology to market through its brand partners. Mips has become bicycle industry's defacto answer to mitigating rotational forces on the brain in the event of a crash. When a cyclist falls, their head often impacts a solid surface at an angle. This angular impact creates a rotation in the brain, which has been proven to have significant potential to cause concussions and TBI's. Scott Sports was the first helmet manufacturer to integrate Mips® into their ARX helmet design, with other manufactures soon to follow. Now, Giro, Bell, Scott, POC and other bicycle industry leaders have integrated Mips® into their helmet designs. As of 2016, more than 28 helmet manufacturers had integrated Mips® into their product lines, with a corresponding number of 1.7 million units featuring the revolutionary technology. Well, there you have it… If a Mips® technology helmet can offer as much as a 50 percent reduction in rotational forces on your brain in a crash. Maybe we should all care what kind of helmet we wear. Shrugging off the soaring temperatures, Bermuda's Olympic hero was again able to produce the goods when it mattered most, navigating plenty of drama on the 40km bike and then easing away from the only woman who could stop her date with destiny, Georgia Taylor-Brown. Gold secured Duffy the title, the race and Series silver went to Taylor-Brown, an excellent first podium for Lena Meissner in third. Another eventful fourth place finish for Taylor Knibb after coming off on the bike secured her the Series bronze. “I'm really, really proud of this one,” said a beaming Duffy afterwards. “It was a difficult start to the year for me coming out of the Olympics and Covid and everything and it took a lot of work to get my mind back into it so I'm thrilled. I smiled a few times when it was just me and Georgia… I feel like she brings me to another level. We don't really give each other an inch and I just wanted to stay safe because it's super hot out there. When I got a little bit of a gap on the third lap of the run it was a little sooner than I anticipated but I thought; ‘well, gotta go now!' Knibb and Duffy spearhead swim With temperatures hitting 33 degrees and shade at a premium out on the course, the yellow hats of the top-ranked athletes filed in and on to the right of the pontoon on the edge of Yas Bay. Flora Duffy and Georgia Taylor-Brown didn't get the best of starts in the water, but were soon digging in to hit the first buoy without any trouble Taylor Knibb on the front. It was the American out first at the turn with Duffy on her feet from Beth Potter, Vittoria Lopes and Taylor-Brown out in fifth, and that was largely how it stayed for the second 750m lap, Summer Rappaport working her way to the front as the six came up and into transition. German duo Laura Lindemann and Lisa Tertsch and Netherlands' Maya Kingma were right there too, but Duffy was slick through transition and away on the 40km first, Taylor-Brown and Potter in hot pursuit, Knibb losing some ground on the six chasing the Bermudian. 9-Deep bike pack leads It wouldn't take long for Knibb to catch on, Germany's Lena Meissner too, and behind the front nine, Taylor Spivey and Kirsten Kasper were riding together 23 seconds back, Cassandre Beaugrand fronting another 11 athletes giving chase but now 54 seconds off the leaders after three laps of nine. Up front, Knibb was prodding and probing, looking to work an opening from wide positions so the Series leaders and championship chasers had to keep fully alert for any sign of an American charge as well as for the tight and technical corners. Duffy then started to test those around her, a mini-break not sticking, the leaders stretching out then coming together repeatedly, though Lindemann fell off the pace to join those behind, now including Tertsch after the German came off but 90 seconds back after five laps. Duffy, Knibb and Taylor-Brown continued to share duties out front, Potter having issues on lap six and next to fall off the leaders and start to ride alone, 20 seconds back. Knibb fall halts progress More drama at the end of lap seven saw Knibb's wheel slide out taking Kingma with her, Lopes and Meissner just able to avoid trouble and stay with Duffy and Taylor-Brown up ahead. Knibb wrestled with her chain for what felt like an eternity but still managed to ride back up to Kingma at the bell, but there was now suddenly just four main contenders for the medals. With the bikes racked, there was no surprise to see the two title-chasers heading out together once more and the best in the world ran together for two laps, the title and an epic season coming right down to a 5km foot race to the line. Duffy books date with triathlon destiny It was coming out onto lap three that Duffy asked the big question, and as she accelerated up the small hill and back out into the heart of the course, it quickly became clear that Taylor-Brown had no answer. Soon the Bermudian was out of sight, looking undaunted by the heat, fully focussed on the fourth title she slowly realised was hers. Taylor-Brown finished with the silver at the end of an exhausting campaign, Meissner with a gutsy first ever WTCS podium ahead of Knibb. Leonie Periault (FRA) ran her way into fifth, Lopes hung on for an excellent sixth ahead of Spivey, Emma Lombardi (FRA), Miriam Casillas Garcia (ESP) and Cassandre Beaugrand rounding out the top 10. “I gave it everything I had today,” said Georgia Taylor-Brown. “It's been a hard few months and I've tried to forget about it all but i'm really proud of myself out there today and giving it everything and doing all I could. We were battling it out to the end and I wouldn't have it any other way, and I don't think she would. I'm still learning in every race and I still want that world title one day.” “I can't believe that, I need a few days to let it sink in,” said a thrilled Meissner. “It was tough but I got here 10 days ago and had good heat prep and there was lots of water and ice out there. I just tried to stay calm and confident and it just worked perfectly for me today.” “I'm pretty shocked, there were a lot of ups and downs in the season and today,” said Knibb. “The corner was entirely my fault, I wasn't full processing things at that point, it was a bit of user error and I'm sorry to Maya and Vittoria and Lena behind me for that. Starting in 2023, 719 Ride participants can earn points toward the season-long Gran Fondo National Series Points Competition and qualify for the USA Cycling Gran Fondo National Championships. The 719 Ride Elevation Celebration will celebrate eight years of cycling fatigue and fun in Colorado Springs in 2023. To honor the 100th anniversary of the death of its fictional inspiration, this Festival of Never-ending Ascending intends to wears its participants out on a 14.4-mile course in the grand shadow of America's Mountain, Pikes Peak. Riders can complete any number of laps for a price 40% lower than a similar event. The signature ride is five laps of The Course That Cannot Be Defeated (71.9 miles and 9,190 feet of elevation gain). In 2006, Eric and Lonnie Dupre completed the first ever summer expedition to the North Pole. During this journey, the duo pulled and paddled specially modified canoes across 550 miles of shifting sea ice and open ocean. Eric successfully led his first expedition to the South Pole in 2008, covering nearly 600 miles in 41 days. Eric is now one of only a few Americans in to have skied to both the North and South Poles. In November 2009, Eric returned to Antarctica for the first leg of his world record Save the Poles expedition. This time he completed a 750-mile ski traverse to the geographic South arriving on January 2, 2010. Two short months later he was dropped off at northern Ellesmere Island for a winter-style North Pole Journey. The international team reached the North Pole 51 days later on Earth Day - April 22, 2010. He completed the Save the Poles expedition by reaching the summit of Mt. Everest on October 15th, 2010 becoming the first person in history to reach the world's three 'poles' within a 365-day period. In March 2014, Eric Larsen and Ryan Waters set out to traverse nearly 500 miles across the melting Arctic Ocean, unsupported, from Northern Ellesmere Island to the geographic North Pole. Despite being one of the most cold and hostile environments on the planet, the Arctic Ocean has seen a steady and significant reduction of sea ice over the past seven years due to climate change. Because of this, Larsen's and Waters' trip—dubbed the "Last North Expedition"—is expected to be the last human-powered trek to the North Pole, ever. (KGUN) — Tucson Bikes for Change is giving out more than 500 bicycles for children in need, before the start of El Tour de Tucson. These special children will receive a bicycle, a helmet, lock and t-shirt at certain locations, along with a free Tour de Tucson Kid's Fun Ride registration. "This year, Serve Our City is excited to Partner with El Tour de Tucson and their Tucson Bikes for Change program by helping to provide volunteers at seven locations throughout the city to assemble 500 bikes provided by a host of great sponsors for children in need," said Outreach Pastor Robin Blumenthal. “What a great way for so many partners to join forces and give Tucson kids the chance to experience the joy of riding a bike in our beautiful city," expressed Blumenthal. (KGUN) — As El Tour de Tucson draws closer, drivers in the Tucson and surrounding areas will want to take note and prepare for upcoming road closures the day of the race, Saturday Nov. 19. An anticipated 7,000 cyclists will navigate the Old Pueblo and surrounding areas beginning at 8 a.m. Multiple variations of the El Tour route are planned: The Century - 102-mile route; 7 a.m. start The Metric Century - 62-mile route; 9 a.m. start The Half Metric Century - 32-mile route; 10:15 a.m. start The FUN Rides! - 10, 5, and 1-mile routes; 8:00 a.m. start All routes start and end around the Tucson Community Center (TCC), with live music, food, beer garden and other exhibitors in the Eckbo Plaza, 260 S. Church Ave. “It's important we let the Tucson community and its surrounding areas to the south – Green Valley & Sahuarita – know what roads will be closed during El Tour on November 19," said El Tour Executive Director TJ Juskiewicz. "We want to make sure everyone is prepared for our road closures as they plan their day. Our ride begins at 7 a.m. and goes to 4 p.m. with roads being closed at various times. Those times are listed on the list we've sent," added Juskiewicz. What's New in the 303: Victoria Brumfield Now Chief Executive Officer of USA Triathlon COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Victoria Brumfield today was announced by USA Triathlon Board of Directors Chair Joel Rosinbum as the Chief Executive Officer for the National Governing Body. Brumfield, who has served as USA Triathlon's interim CEO since early September, becomes the organization's first female CEO in its 40-plus-year history. Brumfield has been a highly impactful executive within the organization for more than four years, serving as an innovative and results-driven leader for the sport and organization. Her vision and leadership led the development and implementation of USA Triathlon's most recent strategic plan – Elevate 2028 – that sets the path for the organization through the LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. “I'm honored to lead USA Triathlon during such an important time, and I want to thank Joel, the USA Triathlon Board of Directors and members of the hiring committee for the opportunity,” Brumfield said. “Multisport is transformative, unifying and empowering, and I am proud and ready to wake up every morning and bring this sport and community to more people. She has instilled a focus on building meaningful relationships with community members across the United States and emphasized the need for both resource development and initiatives and programs that drive value at the grassroots level. Prior to her appointment as interim CEO Brumfield most recently served as USA Triathlon's Chief of Staff and Chief Business Development Officer. You Get What You Give, Ask Primal Why By Bill Plock Nov 6, 2022–Denver In 1998, The New Radicals released the song, “You Get What You Give” and it seems to have resonated strongly as a business mantra with premier cycling apparel manufacturer Primal of Denver. As I looked around the room at the Four Seasons conference room during the PrimalBike 2022 gathering a couple of weeks ago, it dawned on me that between all of the rides represented here, well over $150 million is raised each and every year for a variety of causes; cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, college scholarships, community causes and so much more. Between the rides, tens of thousands of riders explore roads in every corner of America. The reason they were all in Denver? Primal, a thirty-year-old company supplies cycling clothing for all of these rides and the cyclists who spend hours raising money and a lifetime rolling on roads. Thirty years ago, Dave Edwards made some cool cycling t-shirts and sold them out of the back of his car in Moab. They were a hit and one thing has led to another and thousands upon thousands of designs later Primal has evolved into one of cycling's top brands of cycling wear. Each year, Primal invites some of their top customers to meet and discuss the “state of the union” in cycling events and ponder the future, and share ideas on how to improve events and the sport of cycling. This year's attendee's included leaders from MS, RAGBRAI, Bike New York, Pan-Mass Challenge, Outside, and many others. All of the organizations attending, some for-profit and most non-profits, raise enormous money, but so does Primal. Since its inception, Primal has given away over 12 million dollars. Says founder, President/CEO Dave Edwards about the gathering, “the most meaningful part is making connections and sharing knowledge and experiences. We're privileged to work with incredible partners, and we wanted to provide an opportunity for them to get together in a setting that inspires learning, conversations, and relationship building that makes their events even better while getting more people on bikes.” The Pan-Mass Challenge, in particular, raising $63million in one ride for cancer research leads the peloton of charity. Said President, Jarrett Collins, “Primal is a great partner for the Pan-Mass Challenge because they support many of our teams with high-quality kits, AND they give back to the fundraising efforts of those teams, all in the service of defeating cancer!” The group had break-out sessions focused on discussing a variety of topics ranging from sustainability to trends such as gravel, or as Jarrett Collins termed, “unpaved”. Steve Schulz from Cycle Oregon gave us a peek behind the curtains of their Community of Giving (COG) program and the impact their ride has on its communities and how it helps build everything from community centers to improving community relationships. The group took to the streets and rode bikes to further build camaraderie and consider ideas aimed at getting more people on bikes and raising more money. Ken Podziba, President of Bike New York holds the largest one-day ride in the United States, the Five Boro Bike Tour with over 32,000 riders (303 articles about the ride HERE) and said of the conference, “the conference, which was interesting, engaging, informative, and entertaining, provided an opportunity to learn from and collaborate with some of our country's top bike event organizers. I left Denver with a much greater knowledge of Primal's creative and managerial processes, learning things we can apply to our events, and making some awesome new friends – now that's a successful conference!” If you measure yourself by the peers you attract, Primal has attracted many of the best of the best when it comes to top cycling events and raising money for good causes. You Get What You Give seemed more than obvious at PrimalBike 2022. Aspen unicyclist left his mark on famed Iron Horse Bicycle Classic It's only fitting that Aspen's Mike “Pinto” Tierney is going out “No. 1” in the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic. Not “No. 1” as in the fastest in the famed race and recreational ride between Durango and Silverton. Nor did he log the most years riding in the event, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year on Memorial Day Weekend. Instead, he is the guy who has turned heads for tackling the grueling 47-mile ride over two mountain passes exceeding 10,000 feet on one wheel. In Aspen, Tierney is famed for working 40 years on the exalted Aspen Highlands Ski Patrol and for regularly riding his unicycle up Independence Pass and Maroon and Castle Creek roads — and even on a variety of mountain bike trails in the Roaring Fork Valley. In Durango and Silverton, he's known as the crazy dude who rides a one-wheeled cycle with no brakes up and down some of the most challenging passes in Colorado. “A 63-year-old unicycling 50 miles from Durango to Silverton sounds a little crazy. I don't mind being called crazy,” Tierney said. This year's event was his eighth and final Iron Horse. “I was the only unicyclist to do it, ever,” he said. Others started, none finished. He heard of a unicyclist from Cortez who rode the route, just not during the Iron Horse. Unicycles weren't allowed in the event prior to 2005. Rules changed and Tierney jumped at the opportunity — and promptly got humbled. Six unis started. The other riders dropped out along the route. Tierney started with the two-wheeled riders and was quickly left in the dust. One restaurant hung a sign on the door saying, “Free food to Lance Armstrong and any unicyclist that finishes.” By the time Tierney finished, the restaurant was closed for the day because all riders had long since finished. He changed strategy the next time he rode it in 2015. He started an hour early and got the flats north of Durango out of the way. In that and subsequent years, he got used to the racers sweeping by him on lower Coal Bank Pass, then the recreational riders catching him higher up the major ascent. He completes the ride between 6 and 6.5 hours. It's not about finishing fast. It's about finishing on one wheel. Other cyclists marvel at how he can tackle the steep ascents and hair-raising downhills on a cycle with one speed and no brake. He rides a 36-inch wheel. He grinds up with 170mm crank arms and swaps them out to 140mm for the downhills. Over the 45 years since he started riding a unicycle, he's learned to seek the slow cadence of pedal strokes on the downhill. If he cannot maintain it and gets going too quickly, he's got to jump off. He's never had to do it in his eight Iron Horses. While bicycle riders get to coast on the downhills, Tierney still has to work. For Tierney, it was particularly humbling to get accolades in a couple of notable celebrations of the Iron Horse's 50th anniversary. There is a section about him in a book marking the anniversary, “Fiftieth Anniversary, Looking Back Racing Forward” by John Peel. His accomplishments also are included in a special exhibit at Fort Lewis College's Center of Southwest Studies. The exhibit, “Looking Back, Racing Ahead: 50 Years of the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic and Durango Cycling Culture,” is on display until spring 2023. Endurance News: Taylor Knibb Powers to Victory at 2022 Ironman 70.3 World Championships It was the Taylor Knibb show at the 2022 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in St. George as the 24 year-old American put on a master class of racing to take her first-ever 70.3 World title. A master class in racing was held in St. George, Utah this morning during the women's pro race at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship. The instructor: 24 year-old Taylor Knibb, who delivered a confident and commanding swim, bike, and run to take the win in 4:03:20. The Swim Lucy Charles-Barclay and Lotte Wilms finish the women's pro swim leg during the 2022 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. After much speculation about whether or not the swim would be shortened after a cold front moved through southern Utah on race week, race morning arrived with 63 degree F water temperatures and the full 1.2-mile swim. Naturally, many assumed this would work to the advantage of defending champion Lucy Charles-Barclay, who is known for building a considerable lead in any swim leg she races. But instead of surging to the front as usual, she found she had company: Lotte Wilms of the Netherlands and American Taylor Knibb were on her feet. At the halfway point, Wilms surged to attempt a pass, and Charles-Barclay matched her speed; Knibb held on in the draft, eventually reeling the two back in. The trio powered through to the swim exit, with Charles-Barclay's 23:50 swim split just barely edging out Wilms' 23:51 at the first timing mat; Knibb followed in 23:54. The Bike With air temperatures hovering around 38 degrees F at the start of the bike leg, it was clear the race would belong to the one who could best manage the cold. Clad in gloves and thermal cycling attire, Knibb wasted no time taking charge on the bike leg, moving to the front within the first mile. With an average speed of 28.2 MPH in the first 20 miles, Knibb's lead only grew: one minute at mile 10, 2:30 at mile 20. But Knibb wasn't the only one moving quickly. Duffy also pushed hard in the initial miles of the bike, shooting out of the rolling hills of Sand Hollow with laser-like focus to move into second place by mile 10. Behind her, India Lee (GBR) and Findlay were the only athletes to match Knibb's blistering pace, and they were each rewarded with a Duffy pass and a turn at second place before mile 30. At mile 40, Charles made her move, pushing back into second place with Findlay and Duffy close behind as they entered Snow Canyon. Lawrence, spent from the cold and the early charge, was unable to respond and fell behind. Within the walls of Snow Canyon, Knibb's lead only grew. With almost five minutes on the chase pack, the young American sailed up the notoriously steep climbs; behind her, Findlay, then Duffy, then Charles-Barclay (again) attempted to drop the hammer, but no one was willing to give up the fight. As the three crested Snow Canyon and powered to T2, they were greeted by Knibb, who was already well into the run course. The message was unspoken, but clear: Knibb's impossibly fast 2:14:41 bike split had given her a lead of six minutes and 44 seconds. The Run From the first steps out of T2, it was clear that Knibb saw the run as a mere formality to the win. With a consistent 5:58 min/mile pace, Knibb's lead grew – and grew, and grew. By mile 4, she had more than 7:30 over her closest competition. Though the victory was all but decided, there was still an intense race going on to see who would get boxed out of the podium. Duffy, Findlay, and Charles-Barclay ran as a pack, each daring the others to make a move. At the halfway point, Charles-Barclay began to fall back, and Duffy's form began to show signs of fatigue. Findlay, sensing it was time to make a move, began to slowly pull ahead. Over the course of the next three miles, she was able to put in more than 40 seconds on Duffy and Charles. But an out-and-back section of the course revealed that those two weren't the only competitors Findlay had to worry about – a hard-charging Pallant-Browne was clocking 5:56 min/mile splits in hopes of running her way from ninth place off the bike and onto the final podium. She made easy work of it, overtaking Duffy and Charles in the final mile of the race. In the end, Knibb's 1:21:48 run and 4:03:20 finishing time was more than enough to stamp her name on the history books as the youngest woman to win the title of Ironman 70.3 World Champion. Findlay followed in 4:08:57, and Pallant-Browne rounded out the podium with a run split of 1:17:45 and an overall finishing time of 4:10:45. A Rollercoaster 70.3 World Championship, Kristian Blummenfelt Holds on for the Win A relentlessly close swim, a controversial penalty, and a run battle for the ages - the pro men's race at the 2022 Ironman 70.3 World Championship was a high-stakes, high-drama affair that had viewers on the edge of their seats from the very start to the very finish. A relentlessly close swim, a controversial penalty, and a run battle for the ages – the pro men's race at the 2022 Ironman 70.3 World Championship was a high-stakes, high-drama affair that had viewers on the edge of their seats from the very start to the very finish. The moment of catharsis came in the form of a Kristian Blummenfelt victory in a staggering 3:37:12 on one of the toughest courses on the 70.3 circuit. Men's Race: The Swim With water temperatures at 62 degrees F and air temperatures at 40 degrees F, the theme of the day was the same as the women's race prior: managing the cold conditions of late fall in southern Utah. Aussie Aaron Royle set the pace, with Americans Ben Kanute and Marc Dubrick hot on his heels. Royle emerged from the water first in 22:20, followed by Marc Dubric and Ben Kanute. But what came next was a rare sight in middle-distance racing: In the span of only 20 seconds, a pack of 19 athletes rushed out of the water as if one unit. It was no surprise, then, that T1 was a bit of a circus, with athletes jockeying for position. The pack, which included Denmark's Miki Taagholt and Magnus Ditlev, Norwegians Kristian Blummenfelt and Gustav Iden, Americans Eric Lagerstrom and Jason West, Germans Mikia Noodt and Frederic Funk, and Canadian Brent McMahon, rushed out of transition as quickly as they entered. Two minutes down from the lead, another chase pack formed, this one containing Canadian Jackson Laundry and American Sam Long. In 34th and 40th place, respectively, it was clear that if they wanted a fighting chance at the podium, they were going to have to put in some big work on the bike to catch their competition. The Bike Blummenfelt had no intention of sitting in the pack and watching the race unfold in front of him. He pushed hard from the very start, setting out at a burning pace of 28 mile per hour in the rolling hills out of Sand Hollow. Sam Long, who had ridden his way from 40th to 8th place in the first 20 miles, was the one who took the hit. After getting caught in a tight spot during a pass involving Laundry, Long found himself with a controversial call-out from the referee and a five-minute stand-down in the penalty box. With a gap of 2:25 and an enormous chase pack of 18 athletes close together whizzing past the yellow penalty tent, Long was visibly upset. The pack emerged from Snow Canyon and descended with reckless abandon, barreling toward T2 at 39 miles per hour. Ditlev tucked in tight and tried to get any advantage he could, entering T2 with a bike split of 1:49:59, nine seconds ahead of Blummenfelt and Funk. But that advantage was erased in transition as Blummenfelt moved from bike to run in a seamless 29 seconds while Ditlev floundered for nearly twice that amount of time. In the end, it was Blu who started the run first. Would this mistake cost Ditlev the race? The Run Though Blummenfelt set out at a 5:47 minute-per-mile pace, his lead didn't last long. At mile 2, he had company in the form of Kanute, who was throwing down 5:16 splits. As he passed Blummenfelt, Kanute turned the screws even more, dropping the pace to a staggering 4:55 minutes per mile. But this didn't shake Blummenfelt, who stayed right on his heels and let Kanute drive the pace for the next eight miles. The effort allowed the two to pull away from the rest of the field. At the five-mile point, the pair had build a 40 second lead over Ditlev and more than two minutes on Funk, Noodt, and Taagholt. But bridging the gap to the front was not the priority for the chase pack – instead, it was holding off a hard-charging Laundry, who was making quick work of moving from eighth off the bike to fifth place. Could he run his way into a podium spot? And then, a dramatic twist: At mile six, Iden simply stopped, sat on the curb, and said “No more.” As he removed his race bib and exited the course, the residual fatigue from his Ironman World Championship victory three weeks prior was evident; defending his 70.3 title was simply not in the cards this year. It would be up to his friend and countryman to bring home the win. Blummenfelt stepped up to the challenge. With only three miles to go, he made his move, taking two steps around Kanute and forging ahead. This time, there was no looking over his shoulder – Blummenfelt was laser-focused on the finish line. His stride opened up, and he pulled away, opening up a gap of more than 20 seconds in less than a mile. All the shell-shocked Kanute could do was watch the Norwegian disappear into the horizon. With a half-smile, half-grimace on his face, Blummenfelt thundered to the finish line at a pace of 4:36 minutes per mile. It was only in the final stretch to the finish line that he relaxed, offering waves and high-fives to the crowd on his way to a run split of 1:11:39 and a final finishing time of 3:37:12. Jem Arnold is a physiotherapist, coach and PhD student. Currently, his main research focus is investigating FLIA: blood flow limitation of the iliac artery, a condition that affects certain athletes even at the very elite level, sometimes with surgery as the end outcome. Jem is also very involved and knowledgeable in using NIRS (near-infrared spectroscopy) to measure muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2). Callum Brownstein, PhD, is a lecturer in exercise physiology at Newcastle University. Bobby was born in South Africa and went to University basically to study to become a coach, He started by coaching middle and long distance track runners and went on to coach road runners and marathoners. Bobby moved to Boulder in the US in 1992 , and started coaching triathletes. 8:23 - Bobby currently coaches Victoria Lopez, Taylor Knibb, Flora Duffy, Kirsten Kasper along with other pro and amatuer athletes. 10:21 - When coaching elite triathletes, it's important to consider the athletes biomechanics. For instance long distance swimmers often have low bone density and therefore do not perform as strong runners due to the rigors of long distance running, so as a coach it's important to understand and set training expectations specifically for each individual. Bobby's book: Magical Running - A Unique path to running fulfillment 15:59 - Bobby's fascination of the bio mechanics of running came about as he could see a connection between certain running motion patterns and the tendency of getting injured. I use to say: I don't teach people how to run, I help people get back to the best running that they are capable of. Good running form looks very differently depending on the individual's genetics, one has to have a very different approach to someone with for instance long torso and short legs compared to someone with a more natural body composition for running. Also, factors like running background (has the athlete practiced plenty of speed work or come from an endurance background?) matters in how Bobby approaches individuals running technique. 20:06 - Rewinding the clock. Bobby describes his youth and pathway through younger years to discover his passion for running, and then coaching, including serving time in the South African Military. 37:54 - Shifting to mindset and performance, Bobby describes the advice he would give an athlete struggling with confidence. Being aware and knowing how your thoughts affect you is crucial in order to perform. Bobby feels that there is no right or wrong way to prepare mentally for competition, some people are super calm before races and perform well and others are extremely nervous and also perform well. Many age groupers (especially males) tend to overestimate their performance and hence set themselves up for failure by not being able to rise to their expectations. Don't doubt yourself, "The only thing you should doubt, is the doubt". The only thing you should doubt, is the doubt. 41:53 - When it comes to an athlete feeling failure, Bobby explains his techniques that he applies to his athletes. Bobby's golden rule - There is what happened ... then there is 'what are you making it mean to you'. Meaning and interpretation affect an athlete's mindset. 48:23 - Different type of run drills are great in order to achieve a change in running style. The purpose of drills are basically to exaggerate a specific movement. Drills play three different roles: First, you're trying to address a mechanical anomaly that the athlete has gotten into, the second reason is to do it as an activation exercise and the last role is for muscle endurance or power purposes. One also needs to make sure that the athlete has the strength, mobility and balance to run in a specific way. When approaching your running technique, one must be rather careful, this is an area where the wrong tips can get the opposite effect on your performance. 57:27 - First two laws of mechanics. The first rule is to never trust what you feel, you think you run a certain way but when you look into the mirror it rarely looks like what you first thought. Daniel Muniz, PhD, is a senior lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire.
