This week's episode is a rerun of Episode 511 - the incredible journey of Team Oxygenaddict's Allun Sutherland who went from complete beginner to Ironman Wales finisher in less than 12 months. This is genuinely one of, if not the most incredible, inspirational age-group stories we've ever had.Alan started with no experience - literally unable to swim, didn't own a bike, and couldn't run for more than a couple of minutes without needing to stop and rest. But in less than 12 months, through patience, determination, and trusting the training process, he was able to confidently deal with everything the day threw at him - including rough sea conditions, jellyfish, and bad weather. Hear Allun's firsthand account of the training process and progression of a complete beginner, mastering race-day strategies, dealing with injuries, and the importance of mental resilience. If you're new to triathlon and have your sights set on one day tackling Ironman, you'll want to tune in to hear Alan's remarkable journey from a complete novice to an Ironman finisher at one of the toughest Ironman races in the world. Send us a textWelcome to the Agegroup Multisport Podcast, on this episode we have the pleasure of speaking with Daniel Evans.Daniel says "I'm a long distance age group triathlete. I grew up in West Wales then went to university in Bristol to study physiotherapy. After graduating I moved to Hull with my partner.Sport background I grew up playing a lot of rugby (as much as possible), playing for Scarlets under 18's, Carmarthen Quins (welsh premiership) and Hull RUFC (English National 1). It has always been a dream of mine to compete in Ironman Wales, therefore I made the switch to triathlons. My first triathlon was Ripon triathlon in 2023, then later that year I did Ironman Wales where I came 3rd in age group. In 2024 I moved to Australia and competed in Geelong 70.3, Ironman 70.3 Cairns, Townsville long distance world championships, western Sydney 70.3. Plans for 2025 UTMB Tarawera 52km ultra and Ironman Wales. In this episode, Coach Rob focuses on navigating the transition period between the end of the race season and the onset of winter training in preparation for the next year. Including the importance of taking a break post-race season, particularly after major events like the Ironman World Championships and Ironman Wales, to reflect and recover. Key tips include defining a clear off-season period, engaging in varied cross-training activities, beginning strength training, setting goals for the upcoming season, and gradually reintroducing structured training schedules. This week we're answering some of the common and most useful questions that we've been asked ahead of IRONMAN Wales. Including: * The best way to get through the long, 1km run from the swim exit to T1... * What is / isn't allowed in transition in terms of full changes of clothes, nudity rules etc... * The importance of flushing your wetsuit with water once you get in the sea... * Avoiding wetsuit rub on your neck, which is often a lot more painful in a sea swim... * Essential but non-obvious race-day kit that you may not have on your checklist... * Sensible clothing choices for various weather possibilities... * What to do (and not do!) during your final taper week... * Final raceday tips & advice Many of the topcis we cover are relevant to all IRONMAN races, not just Wales specifically. But if you're racing IRONMAN Wales this coming weekend, this is an episode you won't want to miss! * * * * * * * * SPONSORS * * * * * * * * Like what you heard in this episode? Send us a Text Message. It was a pleasure to meet and chat to Irish Multisport Athlete Rob Dwyer Robs story, though relatively new to multisport, was refreshing to hear.Rob says"I came from a hurling back round which I played right up until last May 2023.I decided to retire from it and a friend of mine was at me to have a go at a triathlon since covid, with that I took on my first try a tri in June of 2023.""After that first one I was hooked and with the season pretty much under way, I decided to take on the pikeman an Olympic distance Triathlon in Wexford that year. That was a wrap for 2023, then over the Christmas period I was training away on the turbo and my friend decided it would be great idea to take on Ironman Wales in September 2024 which I signed up for. ""So with that done I got training and decided to to take on the duathlon season in 2024 with kicking of my season off in Waterford and wrapping it up in The Phoniex park for the national finals. With my results in that being good enough I was lucky enough to be put forward to represent Ireland at the world championships in Malaga later this year."You can find Rob on instagram at rob_dwyerThanks for listening. You Can Follow us on Instagram @amp_1967X : agegroupmultisportpodcastFacebook : AMPGBfind all our episodes on our websiteor our YouTube Channel AMP GBWebsite is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/email: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comIf you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch.

In this week's episode my guest is the brilliant Joe Skipper. Joe is one of the worlds top Ironman athletes. He has 3 top ten Ironman World Championship finishes to his name, including 5th in 2022, and is one of the greatest cyclists the sport has ever seen. He has won several Ironman races, and in September 2022, he made up over fifteen minutes after suffering a bike mechanical in Tenby to win at IRONMAN Wales, with one of the most impressive full distance performances on British soil. He also took part in the Sub7 project where, along with Kristian Blummenfelt he broke the seven hour mark in the 140.6-mile iron-distance. And he has now competed in a HYROX – and, despite the race not going how he might have hoped, he loved it and sounds like he wants to come back for more! In this chat we talk more about the sub7 project experience, we talk about his training (including his running training and how that might translate to HYROX), we discuss his best sporting experiences, how he liked HYROX, and lots lots more. It's a brilliant chat with a truly incredible athlete and I think you'll really enjoy it.
This week Coach Rob chats to Team Oxygenaddict Tullia Turner about her successful full-distance debut at IRONMAN Wales. Tullia's story is one that many listeners will resonate with, as you hear how she used triathlon as a force for good when she was in a tough place mentally. Rob and Tullia chat about: How Tullia's personal struggles motivated her towards IRONMAN glory... Her challenging historical relationship with food and exercise... How she managed her training around a busy, stressful work life as a teacher... Adapting to training LESS but in a MORE effective way with Team Oxygenaddict compared to when she was self-coached... Dealing with imposter syndrome and being one of a small number of female entrants... The feeling of standing on the startline and knowing it's one of the most special moments in your life... The importance of "protecting the second half of the run"... The feeling of getting off the bike KNOWING you're going to be an IRONMAN... The mental boost of passing 500+ people on the run thanks to a brilliantly executed race strategy... Reflecting on the personal growth and immense self-pride that IRONMAN has enabled... The importance of recovery in Tullia's progress and preparation... The purity of a motivation like proving something to yourself rather than racing the clock or other athletes. * * * * * * * * SPONSORS * * * * * * * * Team Oxygenaddict Like what you heard in this interview? Welcome back to AMP and its great to have on a younger member of our multisport community. Putting a slightly younger perspective on nutrition and training, as well as the usual, background story and journey into multisport.Thomas was born in Finland and is Half Finnish on his Mothers side. He lived there up until he was around 14 when he moved to the UK.He says he joined the Cross country skiing club in Finland between the ages of 10-11 yrs old, "not very quick",he stopped when he moved to UKThrough his Dad he started Orienteering at Berkshire Orienteers when he was 13-14 yrs old, stopped because of migraines and it was uncool.Thomas started Rowing/sculling at Reading Rowing Club when he was 15-18 yrs old, crazy training but still not quick, stopped because of anaemia & adrenal fatigue. When he went to Bath University he found Triathlon he enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the club his training was unstructured, but he did a lot of reading up on training and nutrition & getting healthy again. He tried out short & middle distance, but liked the 'puzzle' of ironman (i.e. it's not just about who has the highest threshold). His first ironman was Outlaw age group win aged 19 in 2017.Potent, low volume training 2018 helped him at the Denmark long distance worlds where he came 4th M20-24 & Ironman Wales 2nd M18-24. He then prioritised his education taking 2 years "off" as degree was getting tough, no spare time. Thomas continued with Sprint sessions only, but lost a lot of fitness.as the Pandemic hit, while writing thesis, restarted training, new plan: only two training zones. Thomas won Hever Castle Bastion 2021 while working as an engineer. Led 255 'ultra triathlon' but DNF'd, controversy around results. Did some more rowing in Bristol as he had unfinished business. Thomas then moved to London for management consulting. He raced Outlaw again, coming 5th overall. he then won Ironman Finland three weeks later, as he is half-Finnish, it felt amazing (but not appreciated by FinnTriathlon..) Spontaneously raced Challenge Almere three weeks after.Thomas is currently balancing training and work, with little structure. He had a crack at 2023 Ibiza Long distance Worlds with an achilles injury, which turned out to be a bad idea.He has now moved back to Bath, focusing on swim and run high-end speed, hoping to train with the elites. His job still comes first. hw wants to train smart but have fun and be flexible. Thomas is looking to the 70.3 worlds this year and then Kona focus next yearas well as trying for his pro licence.Hope you enjoy this chat. you can Find us on Instagram @amp_1967Twitter agegroupmultisportpodcastFacebook AMPGBfind all our episodes on our websiteWebsite is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/email: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comif you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch.if you have enjoyed this pod please leave a rating wherever you listen.

Gruffudd Lewis is a former pro cyclist from West Wales who has turned his attention to triathlon. As a cyclist, he won numerous Welsh National titles, including National Road Race and Cyclocross Champion. He's now set up his own team, Caffi Gruff, named after the cafe-come-bike shop he owns. He's also Trainee Directeur Sportif for a cycling team. In triathlon, he was part of Kristian Blummenfelt's successful sub7 attempt. He completed his first triathlon at Ironman Wales in 2022 in 10h 43min, on very little triathlon specific training. He's keen to see what he's capable of in the world of multi-sport. You'll hear:08:00 Gruff's background and how he got into cycling. He got a road bike when he was 15 or 16, so he could get into the nearby town from the village he lived in. He joined the local club and started time trialling. But he left it behind for a period as an older teenager, but came back to it when he was 20. 12:00 How hard is it to make a living from cycling when you're not the top cyclist in the world? 'I was just completely obsessed and I was in a massive rush to be good.' Riding for British teams as a domestic pro at the UCI continental levels, you could earn between £20-30,000 year. 17:00 Why is cycling struggling so much at the moment? Gruff says it comes down to money and people don't have hundreds of thousands of pounds they might not get anything back from. 20:30 We talk about his team 'Caffi Gruff' and why he started it up. 25:00 How did Gruff end up doing Ironman Wales for his first ever triathlon? He did 2.5 months training for it (but was very bike fit!) He talks about how he prepared for the running, having spent so much time on the bike as a professional cyclist. "I ran an hour but I knew my bike fitness would carry me through." I just to hit enter again for 2023. 30:00 We talk about the idea of individual training versus training in a group and talking goals out loud and juggling everything. 'Triathlon is easier to do than just cycling.' 32:00 How is Gruff's first year away from the professional cycling world and looking towards more triathlon races? "It's not everything, getting stuff for free. It's definitely been a change this year. The memories of the training camps are some of my favourite memories, when there's no pressure and you're not in a gutter in Belgium." 38:00 Is there anything Gruff would take from the World of cycling into the world of triathlon? 41:00 We talk about the sub7 project and how Gruff ended up getting involved with it. "It was one of the highlights of my year." "KB is one of the most ordinary blokes but he's one of the most hardworking athletes I've ever met."45:00 Would Gruff like to try and be a pro triathlete? 'I'm definitely not doing anything now in my mid-thirties that I don't enjoy doing.'47:00 Gruff shares his tips for descending and bike handling. 53:00 We talk doping - Gruff shares his thoughts on it. Shane Williams is a household name in sport worldwide, the former Welsh International rugby player is regarded as one of the greatest wingers and players of all time. With 87 caps for his country and multiple British and Irish Lions tour appearances, it is no wonder he is a World Rugby Hall of Fame Inductee and a winner of the World Rugby Player of the Year award. Embedded in sport for most of his life, when he retired from professional rugby in 2015 his love and passion for sport continued but took him in a very different direction. Taking part in his first marathon in 2015, it wasn't long before the Welshman became captivated with endurance sport, in particular, triathlon and more specifically with IRONMAN. Somewhat cajoled into taking on his first ever IRONMAN, he didn't have far to travel to take on his first full-distance race at IRONMAN Wales in Tenby, which he has gone on to complete five times, first hearing the words Shane Williams You are an IRONMAN, in 2015. It may come as a surprise to hear that on an IRONMAN Wales race morning, he is more nervous than lining up to play for Wales in the Principality Stadium. But, the goosebumps and passion he feels as he hears the Welsh National Anthem resound on North Beach in Tenby is one that fills him full of the same pride, excitement, and emotion he had as a professional rugby player and, when the gun goes he is more than ready, willing and able to race. A high achiever in sport and competitive by nature, he is as passionate today about triathlon as he was for rugby during his playing days. Always looking to get the best out of himself and his performance in sport, life, and in business, triathlon has opened up a whole new world for Shane Williams, and in his own words says 'I'm hooked, it makes me feel so good'.
Helen heads to Cardiff, South Wales in this week's episode to spend a morning with Dave Tonge (ep. 103) at Heathwood Swimming. Dave has been teaching triathletes and swimmers how to swim for 25 years. He's also helped many former Wales Rugby Internationals with their swimming so they can take on Ironman Wales. Helen meets one such player, Alix Popham, and the 85 year old who is learning to swim. Then Helen has a session with Dave in Endless Pool. You'll hear:06:00 Dave Tonge welcomes Helen to Heathwood swim24:00 Meet Mike, the 85 year old who's been learning to swim with Dave for a year. He was scared of swimming and had never been in the pool. Mike's an inspirational guy who also goes to Crossfit 3 times a week. He decided to learn to swim in his mid-80s because it was on his bucket list. 23:30 Former Rugby International Alix Popham and Dave talk to Helen about the Channel Swim challenge they are involved in October of 2023. A team made up of former rugby union players is taking on a team of former rugby league players in a relay challenge across the English Channel. The majority of the teams have been impacted by early onset dementia. They are raising money for Head For Change. 47:00 Dave gets Helen in the endless pool to help her with her swim technique. IRONMAN Arizona 2022: Preview, start times and how to watch LIVE 14 Nov 2022 by John Levison Last week we highlighted our top five races for the remainder of 2022, and the first event on that list comes up on Sunday, the Biostarks IRONMAN Arizona. Start time and how to watch live The Pro Men will kick-off their day with the 2.4-mile, single-loop swim in Salt River, Tempe, at 0640 local time, with the Pro Women starting five minutes later at 0645. With Arizona on Mountain Standard Time, that means global race start times of: 1340 UK / 1440 CET / 0840 Eastern / 0540 Pacific. The event will benefit from full live broadcast coverage, the final race of the 2022 IRONMAN long-distance season to be featured on their IRONMAN Now platforms via Facebook Watch and YouTube – and also embedded on this preview. As always, the ever reliable IRONMAN Tracker is the perfect data addition to support your viewing. If you haven't got it on your phone already, where have you been?! IRONMAN Arizona Pro Men A dominant winner at IRONMAN Wales and a career-best fifth at the IRONMAN World Championship suggests that Great Britain's Joe Skipper will arguably start as favourite, in what is a deep start list in Tempe. Big races in September, October and November might be considered sub-optimal for many, but based on history at least, there's little reason to believe that the Brit won't be physically and mentally ready to perform at his best, once again. Looking back to 2019 for example, sixth in Kona was followed just over three weeks later by a fantastic victory at IRONMAN Florida, capped off with a 2:39 marathon. Success in back-to-back racing has proven to work for the six-time IRONMAN champion time after time. Even last year, he was totally dominant at IRONMAN Chattanooga, three weeks after second place IRONMAN Switzerland. He's seemingly at home racing in the U.S., too. Joe Skipper 2022 photo credit IRONMAN Wales [Photo credit: IRONMAN Wales] The USA's Sam Long made plenty of headlines at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, but with that very contentious penalty on the bike, not the sort that he wanted. Winner in Gdynia, strong at the Collins Cup and a podium at the PTO US Open, the form is there – hopefully we'll get to see it on Sunday. Sam Long St George photo credit Tom Pennington Getty Images for IRONMAN Sam Long at St George [Photo credit Tom Pennington/Getty Images for IRONMAN] The full-distance debut of Ben Kanute will be of particular interest, especially having turned around what was a mid-season of relatively under-whelming results by his standards. He put on a brilliant show at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, taking a second silver medal at the championship. Strong across all disciplines, he should be at the front of the race for much of the day. Ben Kanute 2nd at IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship 2022 Photo: Patrick McDermott/Getty Images for IRONMAN When you then add Matt Hanson, Chris Leiferman, Kristian Hogenhaug, Bart Aernouts, Justin Metzler and plenty more into the mix, then the way that racing has been going over the last few years, you have to think that the course record figures of Lionel Sanders (7:44:29 from 2016), will be under threat. You can be sure that Great Britain's Andrew Horsfall-Turner will be pushing the pace in the water from the get-go – and with Kanute likely wanting to be a part of that too, that would benefit the man from Wales too. Pro Women The USA's Skye Moench (#10) is the PTO's top-ranked female professional set to race in Tempe, a race where she has previously finished 11th (2016) and fourth (2018). Winner of three IRONMAN titles since then – and having finished fourth in St George, ninth in Kona this year – she will rightly start as favourite. skye-moench-kona-2022-bike (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images for IRONMAN) Illness ruined her Kona prospects, but Sarah True still has the class to be a factor in Arizona. A winner this year at Eagleman 70.3 and IRONMAN Lake Placid, the two-time Olympian now juggles triathlon alongside being a mother and studying. Entering Arizona with a, ‘one race, one win' history over the distance after her debut performance at IRONMAN Lanzarote, Great Britain's Lydia Dant has made rapid progress inside her first year in the Pro ranks. On the bike in particular – aided by her skills as a bike fitter – Lydia has excelled, and will be looking to make progress on that fast roads of the IRONMAN Arizona course towards the front of the race, once out of the water. Lydia Dant - IRONMAN Lanzarote 2022 finish Photo Credit: James Mitchell for Club La Santa After finishing 10th (St George) and 12th (Kona), you can't write off the podium prospects of the consistent Maja Stage Nielsen (DEN) either. The Dane is really consistent across all three disciplines. Jen Annett (CAN) has taken second place this year at both IRONMAN Des Moines and IRONMAN Mont Tremblant, and so is another athlete sure to be chasing the podium positions in the late stages. You can find the full start list here. Recent IRONMAN Arizona Pro winners 2019: Sara Crowley (AUS) – Pro women only race 2018: Eneko Llanos (ESP) / Heather Jackson (USA) 2017: Lionel Sanders (CAN) / Kaisa Sali (FIN) 2016: Lionel Sanders (CAN) / Meredith Kessler (USA) 2015: Lionel Sanders (CAN) / Meredith Kessler (USA) Prize Money: What's on the line? The prize purse on offer this weekend is $100,000 – with each of the winners collecting a $15,000 share of that total. In addition to money, there will be a total of four qualifying slots (two MPRO* / two FPRO) for the IRONMAN World Championship in Hawaii, 12 and 14 October 2023. A valuable opportunity to get the KQ box ticked well in advance. (* Note – Joe Skipper is already qualified by virtue of his victory at IRONMAN Wales). The total funds will be paid ten-deep, as follows: $15,000 $9,000 $7,000 $5,000 $4,000 $3,000 $2,500 $2,000 $1,500 $1,000 Of course, thanks to the formation of the Professional Triathletes Organisation, financial rewards from performance are not solely from on-the-day performances, and this is one of the few 2022 races remaining to improve your ranking. The PTO World Rankings will see a total of $2million awarded at the end of 2022, based up on the final standings in those points tables. The rewards there can be substantial, with a move up or down the rankings system potentially earning you more than any individual event. Feel free to contact us if you're not sure if you are up for it. Alcatraz swims are $245 per event. There is a $50 late registration fee within one month of the swim. In addition to the swim itself, registration includes an event t-shirt, an Alcatraz Swim sticker, and a yellow silicone Alcatraz swim cap. All Alcatraz swims will take place in the morning, usually meeting in San Francisco between 5 and 8am. We talk about goals, failing it and nailing it, with two very ordinary busy working mums, Sophie Gasson and Katy O'Connor. Sophie was on the podcast in 2021 after attempting to swim the channel. While Katy is a 3 time long-distance triathlon finisher. She took up triathlon in her 50s, after she was hooked in following an opportunity to volunteer at Ironman UK. Katy wasn't a swimmer, didn't have a bike and has spent the last ten years progressing through the distances but admits she often needs something scary to make her work hard! You'll hear: 06:00 Interview with Sophie Gasson - channel swimmer at 54 31:00 Katy explains the seed that was planted after she experienced her first Ironman in 2011, working as a volunteer at Ironman UK. Katy hadn't done front crawl before she was 50 and she talks through the process of having to learn to swim as an adult. 50:00 So interesting and so many people can relate 'I felt you had to be really fast to join a tri club.' 55:30 Why Katy did achieve her 'why' and why it was so important to her. "when you do achieve something like that it gives you the confidence to think 'what's next?' 59:30 The importance of saying YES to things to Katy. "I've had brain surgery twice." It was a case of "If the tumour is not removed, it will eventually kill you." After the second one when the operation had been a success it was like a new start. And every time when I have the choice of doing something I think 'what are you waiting for?' Andrew Horsfall-Turner took up triathlon in 2017 after spending his childhood, teenage years and early 20s as a top swimmer. He did Ironman Wales in 2019 as an age-grouper and won a Kona slot in the 25-29 age group. The plan was to go to Hawaii as an age group athlete, but then Covid hit. So he took the decision to turn professional, rather than waiting to go to Kona as an age grouper. He returned to Ironman Wales in 2022 as a professional and finished in a brilliant 5th place. He's the Welsh record holder over the full distance and hopes to build on this and return to Kona as a professional. Andrew also shares some swimming tips for you as he mixes his training with swim coaching. You'll hear: 07:00 Andrew talks about doing his first triathlon in 2018 and his background in swimming. "I turned the pedals over and that was how a bike worked. I called myself a novice and it's been a really steep learning curve." "I loved swimming. I was that strange kid who loved it. It just became part of life. I identified myself as a swimmer first and then everything else second." "But between 21 and 23 I was probably training too hard and I was getting frustrated but then my coaches suggested I tried swimming coaching and that was the beginning of the end in terms of my swimming." 12:30 How Andrew came across Ironman World Champs in Kona and how it all led him to triathlon. "Straight away I wanted to go to Kona." 14:00 We talk about the Olympics and how it was one of Andrew's aims to go there and compete but how he pushed himself too hard and dug himself into a bit of a whole. "Being so young and hungry for success was probably at my own detriment." 17:00 Andrew talks about stepping into a coaching role and how it changed his mindset and why he now is working with a coach. "I was so blinded by wanting to be the hardest worker in the pool, but I should have calmed myself down rather than working too hard." 19:30 We talk about the process of finding a coach and what's important to take into account. 21:30 How he's started working with David Tibury-Davis, and the confidene that has given him. "It's the reassurance that what I think I am doing is what I am doing. If you go into a race doubting if it's good enough, then you probably won't do as well as you could. He's helped me develop that belief." 24:30 Why Andrew feels like it's been a 22 year work in progress, rather than a 5 year progress since his first triathlon. 25:30 We talk about going from swimming into running and what the process has been like for Andrew. "I feel like I'm in running infancy and it's a really cool project as I think there's so much more to come. 31:00 We chat through how Andrew developed his cycling after first getting into triathlon. 36:00 The difference between doing Ironman Wales as an age group athlete (2019) and doing it as a professional (2022.) It was always a pipe dream but I'm so glad I did go back, it's just a triathlon mad community. I left feeling 'I could have won it' so I want to try and go back and win it. 40:00 Andrew shares his thoughts on how to improve swimming as a triathlete. "it's a gradual process." He suggests if you don't live near the sea, prioritise going to the beach, or pick a race that is lake-based. 44:00 We talk about the Neptune Steps, 420m of swimming with 100m of elevation. It's bonkers.' They decided to do it in February in Scotland.' I did it three years in a row and finished runner up each time.' 47:00 How Andrew combines his swimming coaching with his training. 'it's been up and down' 'During covid, i took a sabbatical from triathlon and I didn't push through or do any of the dry-land swim training. On episode 57 we have Agegrouper, Dentist, creator of the wonder clinic, the Do Better podcast and Blogger, Stevie Potter Stevie says “didn't always start off in the blue tracksuit; I was just a clever potato for my formative years, with no passion for sport and certainly no aptitude for it, but I had always been an active kid and came from a family who always encouraged me to do my best. After realising the party lifestyle was taking its toll when I hit University, I decided it was time to do something about my health before it was too late and so my running journey began… Fast forward 13 very rollercoaster years and I've finished my dental degree, competed in international rowing competitions, run the London marathon, completed Ironman Wales, graced multiple running and triathlon podiums and have qualified to represent my country at the top level of amateur triathlon racing. When I started the Wonder Clinic, the aim was to use my clinical expertise to help people find confidence in their own skin, something I'd loved being able to do with my cosmetic dentistry. While I was on that journey, I realised I was also being asked by my clients about what to eat, how to train and how I had made it to where I had in my life outside of work. I realised then, that I also had the passion and knowledge to be able to coach them through the physical and mental strategies that had got me where I am today. Now, I spend most of my time sharing my knowledge of fitness and nutrition with my 1-2-1 coaching clients and in my group of motivated go-getters on facebook. I help people revolutionise the way they look at food and exercise and help them to see the importance of long term investment in their own wellbeing. I teach people to LOVE a healthy lifestyle, while still enjoying balance. I give people their confidence back and what's more, they keep it that way. No faddy diets, no falling off the wagon, but true transformation, learning from all my successes and mistakes and more importantly, my years of experience and knowledge in my field which took me from academic potato to GB athlete!Hope you enjoy her story. You can listen to this AMP episode and all the others on most podcast platforms and now we a have our own YouTube channel : AMP GBFind us on Instagram amp_1967Twitter agegroupmultisportpodcastFacebook AMPGBYouTube AMP GBWebsite is : agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.comemail: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.com

"It was a risk, but if it doesn't work out, I can always go back. Professional triathlete Lydia Dant and Passion Fit Coach Loren Ward join together in conversation, to talk about age group life, turning pro, setting goals, having confidence and being comfortable on a bike. You'll hear: 01:00 Rich and Helen's final thoughts before Beyond the Ultimate's Highland Ultra. 18:00 Why weekends don't exist for Loren and Lydia. 20:00 Lydia explains how she met Loren in 2018 after she had entered Ironman Wales and decided she wanted some coaching. Loren says she remembers the first time Lydia turned up to a session. 'she was really quiet and really nervous and we did an FTP test in her first session and I look back at that and I think woah, look how far! Lydia says "On my first run session, it was a 10km TT and I remember getting to 7 or 8km in and thinking 'I don't know if I can finish this." 22:50 Those nervous feelings when you turn up to a triathlon club for the first time. "I'm quite introverted really and I find it hard to make those initial conversation starters. You worry if you will be fast enough or if you will keep up, but one of my biggest worries was getting lost." "Often you have no idea what they are going to make you do, but 99% of the time, it's never as bad or as scary as you think it might be" 27:50 Loren says she didn't realise Lydia's potential from the start. "She was a strong athlete and she performed quite well, but as time went on she started getting faster than me at everything. But it wasn't just her athletic ability, the way that she went about her training was different. It was her mindset and attitude that we saw that was brilliant because that's when we knew she had both the mindset and the athletic ability. 30:00 Lydia talks about whether she set out to be a professional athlete' "I never put a glass ceiling on what I thought I might be able to achieve. It's been about a personal development piece for me and how being part of a community and group of people has totally transformed my way of thinking and my mindset." 32:00 We talk about confidence! And why the process matters rather than a metric. Loren says 'If an athlete is fast, there is sometimes a perception that they must be really confident' but if you focus on the process rather than the outcome, you can't ask for more and it can help with nervousness and anxiety and you are much more in control of that outcome. 35:00 Goal setting. "Think hard about your goals. As long as it's important to you and individualised and your reality is aligned with that goal" 38:30 Lydia talks about her love of bikes, her bike fitting business Pheonix Evolution and shares some tips about how to enjoy cycling and being comfortable. "You just have to try things and always question can you be more comfortable?" 47:00 Lydia talks about plans for her first Ironman in 2022, four years after she had first planned to do one. But this time it will be in the pro field at Ironman Lanzarote rather than as an age group athlete doing it for a challenge. "It blows my mind every morning." The first pro race was so surreal. I didn't have any mates to nudge on the elbow and say 'oh my god, that's Anne Haug.' 53:00 What was the decision process like to apply for her professional licence? Lydia describes the dilemma between getting more experience in triathlon as an age group athlete, or just going for it in the pro ranks. 55:00 If Loren and Lydia can switch off from triathlon and if so, how. 59:00 Hear all about Antony Butcher's https://antonyjcbutcher.com/ (Ride Across America) and why he is doing it. Dave Tonge is a swimming coach and world record holder from south Wales. He's been coaching swimmers and triathletes for 25 years. He played a vital role in 2019 to help rugby star Gareth 'Alfie' Thomas overcome his fear of the water to complete Ironman Wales and break the stigma around HIV. Dave also holds the World Record for completing a 24 hour swim in an endless pool, when he covered a whopping 55km. He's also hilarious, has an infectious passion for swimming and is full of useful tips to help improve your swim leg in triathlon. You'll hear: 01:30 His background in swimming as a swimmer and a coach 'chlorine is in my blood! Swimming is your time, it's your headspace. Whether you think about stuff or sing songs in your head. I just switch off and enjoy the feeling of the water' 05:45 I spotted a gap in the triathlon market and I now teach all levels of swimmer, from beginner to pro swimmers and former rugby players who decide they want to do an Ironman. 06:30 Where the idea came from to get the World Record for a 24h swim in an Endless pool. 15:15 Why his lack of a night swim in training was on his mind in the run up to his 24 hour swim and how he fuelled his 24 hour swim. 20:00 The side effects of spending 24 hours in water 'my hands looked like they had been steam rollered! The skin was flapping against the bones' 22:00 Dave shares his tips for age group triathletes and why seeing a coach can be really beneficial. Make sure you have a coach and build confidence. Surround yourself with like-minded people. Cold water and wearing a wetsuit can hit you too and acclimatise is really important. 25:00 How he has been teaching an 83 man to swim. 'oh we have had some fun and games! It was all to do with building confidence in the water and it's the same thing that I learnt as a 16 year old to build the confidence with a child. 27:45 Dave talks about teaching Gareth 'Alfie' Thomas to swim so he could complete Ironman Wales in 2019. His journey was documented in the 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lLRdWXEGL8 (HIV and me documentary). 'I had such pressure on me as a coach. There were tears at Long Course Weekend. How I got him back in the water for the second lap, I don't know.' He talks through how he did get Gareth through the swim, making him think about his motivation and his 'why'. 40:10 Dave shares his tips for athletes preparing to take on Ironman Wales and Ironman 70.3 Swansea. 'Smile! Smile at the sea and know that you are going to get out smiling, because you have paid for that and most people are doing it for fun as a hobby, so just enjoy it." 41:45 Can you do an Ironman with just one swim a week? I ask Dave. "You can get through it, but it will be a bad experience. You need to be getting in the pool three times a week. You need to do technique work and a long threshold set. Speak to someone who knows what they are doing, so you can get through it and enjoy it." 43:20 Some of the common techniques that Dave sees as a swimming coach. 'Head too high in the water, crossing the line at the front are both common ones. At the higher end for age groupers, it's not challenging all of the different energy systems. Love triathlon? Love rugby? Love Wales? Then this episode is for you! Former Wales international Shane Williams talks about his journey from being one of the best wings in the world, to being a multiple Ironman finisher. The 5ft7 wing who was International Player of the Year in 2008, won 87 caps for Wales and made multiple appearances for the British and Irish Lions. Since retiring, he has turned his hand to endurance sports and has been a regular at Ironman Wales. You'll hear: 06:30 The trigger for getting into triathlon 09:00 His first Ironman Wales 'At times, I absolutely hated it, but at times I absolutely loved it. From start to finish I was absolutely petrified.' 12:30 How he got the likes of Ian Gough and Ryan Jones involved. 15:00 The difference between the physical pain of playing rugby and doing a triathlon 18:00 Dark places on the rugby pitch Vs dark places in a race 25:10 Which rugby player would he most like to race against in a triathlon and who would be in his ideal triathlon relay from the rugby world? 36:00 How his nutrition differs between when he was a rugby player and now he is training for a triathlon. If anything I pay more attention to my diet now than I did as a professional rugby player. I was told what to eat and when to eat it and I would usually go up for seconds. Does he miss his rugby body? I probably don't. I'm still quite muscly, but my body has changed completely. My body fat is lower than when I was playing. I probably look better now than I did when I was playing rugby, I feel lighter, I'm lighter on my feet. I look completely different and I see pictures of me and I'm probably healthier now then when I was then. 41:44 What tips would he have for anyone doing Ironman Wales. 'The more training you put in, the easier Ironman Wales is and the more you enjoy it on the day. Left no stone unturned in your training and then you will enjoy the day. In 2015 I didn't appreciate how tough it would be and it spat me out. For long periods of that day, I hated it. ' 43:00 Whether he'll be getting his https://fabfourcoffee.com/ (FabFour coffee) founders involved and why he started his own sportswear brand, https://www.agilissport.com/ (Agilis). What do you do when your international rugby career ends? Try an Ironman triathlon, obviously! At least that's the path that today's guest took. For 13 years (2000-2013) Shane Williams scorched the earth playing on the wing for Wales and the British and Irish Lions. In 2008 he was IRB World Rugby Player of the year and retired with 91 international caps and 60 tries, ranking him 4th in the all-time list of international try-scorers. Retirement leaves a big hole in the lives of professional sportsmen and women so looking for a challenge, he accepted a friend's invitation to take part in the 2015 Ironman Wales in Tenby. To say he was bitten by the bug is an understatement as you'll hear in the conversation. Shane's enthusiasm for triathlon matches the joy he still has for rugby union and this really comes across. If you don't at least think about signing up for Ironman Wales when you have finished listening, I'll be very surprised. As normal we get through a lot in this chat including: Wingman to Ironman in less than 6 months 9 weeks from 50m to completing the 3.8k Ironman swim in Tenby Why professional athletes are inspired by the crowd as much as you and I Rugby & triathlon: Polar opposites but it's all about the mindset Why the crowds in Tenby are as inspiring as the Millennium Stadium Amusing and inspiring: Shane recalls his first Ironman race in detail Would you rather run the last 5 miles of the Ironman, or take a big hit from Manu Tuilagi?
