In this inspiring episode, we sit down with Claire Carlin, an accomplished age-group triathlete, karate black belt, and dedicated Assembly of God minister. Claire shares her journey as an athlete navigating the unique challenges posed by her co-occurring conditions of autism and dyspraxia, conditions that often impact her ability to perform coordinated movements. Despite these hurdles, Claire has tackled multiple triathlons, including three full-distance Outlaw triathlons, and recently achieved an impressive PB in each discipline at Ironman Barcelona – crossing the finish line in just under 15 hours. Claire talks openly about how dyspraxia impacts her swimming, cycling, and running, and how she's found creative ways to overcome each challenge. She also delves into the ways her faith fuels her athletic journey, including her role as a minister and her involvement in the Outlaw prayer gatherings. I'm sure you'll enjoy this episode, as we discuss: Claire's journey from her first run in 2019 to finishing a full Ironman in under 15 hours How dyspraxia and autism shape her training approach and impact her performance Tips for overcoming skill-based obstacles in triathlon for those new to the sport The importance of faith and community in her life, both on and off the race course Whether you're struggling to master the skills required for triathlon or simply looking for some powerful motivation, Claire's story reminds us that with perseverance and heart, we can accomplish extraordinary things. Tune in for an episode full of insight, resilience, and inspiration! Follow Claire on Facebook to keep up with her triathlon journey. Claire has 2 book recommendations. She said you wouldn't expect a minister to ignore the Bible, so she directs you to the Book of Hebrews. My guest today is Matt Spooner, who recently completed the Trans Continental Race - a 4200km non-stop bike ride from Roubaix in France, down to Istanbul in Turkey. Apart from the start & finish, there are 5 checkpoints and several compulsory sections known as parcours. There are also some roads which are banned, generally because they are unsafe for the riders. After that the route is completely open to the choices made by the riders. This event isn't just about cycling for many days. It's also a logistical challenge and a heaven for any one who likes planning.   This is a podcast that was recorded in 2 parts. In the first half you'll hear me having a short (30-minute) conversation with Matt while he is actually riding his bike through Greece, about 3/4 of the way to his destination. We chat about: Route selection and how that's working out Some of the problems he has encountered along the way Equipment choices  Daily nutrition on the road. In the second half, Matt and I are speaking a few days after he has finished the event. We then reflect on his overall performance and also: Whether executing the plan is more satisfying than the time and position His decisions to stop and sleep in a hotel each night versus camping by the side of the road Why finishing an event like this is more about being able to eat as much as you can than having a high FTP More about equipment choices  Mindset for tackling TCR   To find out more about Matt, please visit the following social media channels Instagram - matt_still_tri_ing Facebook - matthew.spooner.927 LinkedIn - Matthew Spooner   If you haven't yet seen the documentary about the Transcontinental Race, I can highly recommend it: Onboard the Transcontinental Race   Some links to topics covered in the podcast Diet Efficacy of Popular Diets Applied by Endurance Athletes on Sports Performance: Beneficial or Detrimental? A Narrative Review "I recently read this paper, it's a nicely balanced review of multiple different research papers into different diets. You may have wondered about my choice of the phrase High Performance Human. It doesn't relate to athletes who perform at the top of their age group. The concept of high performance can be described as a measurable state where an individual consistently performs at a higher level of operational success compared with most of their peers within the same environment at a particular time. High performance is not absolute, but relative.    Thus, a high performance human is someone who optimises their performance in many areas of their life - career, relationships, health, fitness etc. Many of you reading this will fall into that category even if you haven't realised it.   Today's podcast guest is Matt Spooner and he definitely is a High Performance Human. At 51 he is still getting faster as a long distance triathlete. If you are a regular on some of the triathlon pages on Facebook I'm sure you have come across Matt's posts as he shares his experiences of training and racing with the aim of helping other athletes. In this conversation we chat about:   living in Switzerland and finding the perfect environment to live and train making a conscious decision to prioritise training and not get sucked into the corporate work trap of long working hours building consistency into his training  learning from elite athletes the challenge of completing IM Wales 3 weeks after completing the 4000km Transcontinental Bike race. How to balance training around business travel   Buckle up and get your note books ready because there's a lot of great stuff in this conversation!   To find out more about Matt, please visit the following social media channels Instagram - matt_still_tri_ing Facebook - matthew.spooner.927 LinkedIn   If you haven't yet seen the documentary about the Transcontinental Race, I can highly recommend it: Onboard the Transcontinental Race   Some links to topics covered in the podcast Diet Efficacy of Popular Diets Applied by Endurance Athletes on Sports Performance: Beneficial or Detrimental? A Narrative Review "I recently read this paper, it's a nicely balanced review of multiple different research papers into different diets. Chelsea Sodaro's Biggest Victory Isn't Kona—It's Her Well-Being

The Rich Roll Podcast

We love to celebrate professional athletes as superheroes. But even world champions are human. Just 18 months after giving birth, in 2022 Chelsea Sodaro became the first American woman in 25 years to win the Ironman World Championship and the first Kona-crowned rookie since Chrissie Wellington's victory in 2007. It was a new-mom-Cinderella story that travelled beyond the endurance press to the mainstream, positioning her as a powerful and inspiring voice for female athletes and young moms all across the world. But just as she reached the highest echelon of success, Chelsea began to face a challenge far more difficult than Kona. The periodic bouts with mental health that had visited her in the past came roaring back in the form of an acute anxiety disorder that made it difficult for her to leave the house, left her bereft, unable to train, and prone to suicidal ideation. Refusing to accept debilitation, Chelsea sought help for a problem her champion mindset alone simply couldn't solve. Today Chelsea shares her story with laudable openness and vulnerability. In this conversation we discuss the tools Chelsea relies upon to confront and manage her mental health struggles, why she decided to reach out for help, and why sharing her experience publicly has been and continues to be integral to her recovery.  In addition, we discuss Chelsea's journey to triathlon, the current state of gender equity in the sport, and how we can better support female athletes and make sport more accessible to all. Chelsea also shares the mindset that has propelled her success and why she actively makes decisions based on love, joy, and possibility rather than fear. Note: Today we discuss mental health issues some might find confronting. If you are struggling, please raise your hand and reach out for help. You can call SAMHSA's National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP and if you are experiencing suicidal ideation, know you're not alone. I encourage you to call the Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1(800) 273-TALK. I have so much respect for Chelsea's strength, courage, and vulnerability. Chelsea's story is powerful. I'm proud to help amplify it. And our shared hope is that it helps those in need and serves to further normalize the discourse around mental health. Oxygenaddict Triathlon Podcast, with Coach Rob Wilby and Helen Murray - Triathlon coaching by oxygenaddict.com

From the Archives: Dave ScottDave Scott is already well known for his achievements - 6 time winner of Ironman Hawaii between 1980 and 1987, successful coach to champion athletes like Chrissie Wellington, Craig Alexander, Tim Don and Julie Dibens. What is less well known is his ongoing battle with depression that has, at times, left him unable to get off the couch. Dave is open and honest about the challenges he's faced - how, despite the World regarding him as ‘The Man', and his countless race successes, striving for perfection and falling short often left him feeling worthless. And he also shares about how, with time, he's come to see things differently, how his children have helped him, and how, in turn, he's managed to help other highly driven and obsessive athletes find a little more balance - as well as World Championship victories. We also hear Dave's thoughts on the efforts of the PTO and their aim of making the sport more professional. In today's episode Amy interviews Chrissie Wellington OBE, former professional triathlete, four time world IronMan Champion and now Head of Global Wellbeing at the National Lottery-supported parkrun. Whilst Chrissie remains the world record holder for Ironman distance (completing it in an incredible 8 hours 18 minutes!) she now devotes her life to improving individual and population health and wellbeing, specifically by getting people involved in physical activity. Together Chrissie and Amy compare top parkrun stores, discussing the diverse and welcoming nature of these free events and the many benefits it can bring to individuals and the community. We'll also hear how, thanks to The National Lottery Players, parkrun has received £3.6million of funding over the past 8 years, which has been ground breaking in its success. Chrissie believes it's this support of grassroots organisations, the ones that remove the barriers to exercise, that is so key for our emotional and physical health, but it's also key to a healthier future for our children. Together Amy and Chrissie cover Chrissie's remarkable road to sporting prowess and how she's carried these lessons into her family and work life now, and some of her top tips for getting involved... the key is starting somewhere, it doesn't have to be big and bold! In this episode I speak to Chrissie Wellington. Chrissie is so enormously famous in the world of running (and cycling and swimming) that she really needs no introduction. Chrissie is actually part of the Women's Running family – if you read the magazine you may have noticed her crop up in our annual Product Awards, in which she plays a big part. So we've spoken before, and it is to my utter shame she hasn't appeared on the podcast to this date. We talk about her meteoric rise into professional sport – how she made the leap in the first place, how her coach saw her potential in the ironman distance, and how in fact she didn't really come from nowhere, as everyone says – it was just an unconventional start with tons of experience of endurance, even if that was cycling around Nepal rather than around a track. She also talks passionately about the unifying and empowering force of sport, a belief that has moved with her from the world of professional sport to her current day job as Global Head of Health and Wellbeing at parkrun. She is super inspiring and happily overlooked the Zoom call from hell – we've done our best with this one, but do please bear with a slightly glitchy call in places. It gets better! We love making this podcast for you, and we hope you love it just as much. If you do, we're asking for your support so that we can continue making it. We've joined up with Patreon to do that awkward thing of asking for money. But the thing is, we're only asking you to donate as little as £2 a month. "Intuition is a powerful thing. More powerful than intellect." - Steve Jobs"The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift." - Albert EinsteinThe power of intuition is a difficult thing to quantify, but numerous hugely 'successful' people have sworn by it. In this week's full length conversation, Jimmy Chin spoke about how he chose to follow his intuition against the wishes of his parents. It led him to becoming a celebrated athlete, photographer and Oscar winning film Director, which he never invisaged happening. In this episode we here from Ironman triathlon legend Chrissie Wellington, who has followed her intuition throughout her life. It's a deep and honest chat with British pro Kim Morrison, covering everything from big race postponements, to her background in triathlon, to her progression as a professional. We talk about the mental ups and downs she's faced with running. And why she's eager to start training with others again soon. You'll hear: 07:00 Her reaction to the Kona postponement and why she's not convinced it should be held elsewhere as a one-off. 12:30 Why loving triathlon is key to continuing 'if you're not passionate and in love with it, I truly don't believe you can continue doing it, not to the level that will fulfil you anyway' 15:30 Her love for Time Trialling 'its probably one of the sports that has progressed the least. We still sign on pen to paper. Even 4-5 years ago you'd have to purchase the handbook to know which races were happening. Nothing was online. 19:14 Why running remains a daily challenge for Kim. "Forget the run tomorrow". Going out to run for pure pleasure - I get those days sometimes but more often than not, all I can think of is 'it's for Kona'. My mind doesn't wander when I run. Running just doesn't come naturally to me. 26:00 Why she asked David Tillbury-Davis to coach her when she met him in Kona 2019. ' I really wanted a fresh pair of eyes over me as a runner' 30:00 Why she bases herself in Norfolk, in the east of England. 'I think the uniqueness is how flat it is!' Day to day training solo is great, but it's getting tough' 32:20 The role Chrissie Wellington has played in Kim's career. 'The commute on the tube turned into commuting on my bike into work after I finished that book.' 38:45 Some useful tips to motivate yourself if you've had a disappointing race or result. "I'll now know never to not push hard enough. " 43:00 The impact the early part of her life has had on her since. 48:00 The biggest take away Kim has learnt from her career as a professional triathlete. We talk about "lenses" on the All Things Risk Podcast - ways of viewing the world.  One  of the lenses through which we can understand human potential is sport, and in particular, endurance sport.  The conversation in this week's episode may, at first glance, seem like a discussion about nutrition in this domain, and in a way it is.  But, it is about much more than that. Meet Erica and Warren Pole. Erica and Warren are founders of the highly innovative sports nutrition company "33 Shake" - 33shake.com.  33 Shake sells  whole food plant-based sports nutrition products. Erica and Warren are endurance athletes and in the course of their training, they found it very difficult to get good, natural sports nutrition. So, they made their own based on research and experimentation.  Soon however, they were sharing their creations with others and before they knew it, they had a business on their hands. Now, 33 Shake has grown very impressively.  They have a presence in 25 countries but more significantly, some of the world's elite athletes are customers (like British multi-Olympic Gold medallist and Tour de France Winner Sir Bradley Wiggins and British double Gold Medallist Phil Hindes), and Chrissie Wellington, 4 time Ironman World Champion is a brand Ambassador.  For a company that started out on a kitchen table, that is very impressive.  But how did that happen? Listen to find out! This is a fabulous conversation that covers: Entrepreneurship and risk-taking; Nutrition and sports nutrition (particularly plant-based, vegan nutrition); Superfoods; Endurance sport as a channel to explore your limits; Working together as husband and wife Loads more!
