Welcome to Sometime Between Dusk and Dawn Ghost Stories. This episode is written and produced by me, Jannette Quackenbush with folklore pulled from many resources, including Ghosts of Louisiana from the 1939 Progress Administration of Louisiana. There is more than just this podcast. You can buy my book series on Amazon and also at other bookstores including this one which comes from one of my latest books, Ghost Stories and Folk Tales of New Orleans. For the twentieth episode, Aaron and Chris take a listen to some gothic Americana from the alternative country band The Handsome Family. Aaron and Chris discuss the husband and wife duo's sixth studio album, Singing Bones. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/esoterica-the-podcast/message
Far from any road, husband-and-wife duo The Handsome Family create beautiful indie folk/country that uses centuries-old musical traditions as a vehicle to explore, mourn, embrace, or giggle at human nature (and folly) from a perspective all their own. On this episode, Will enlists Amanda, Dan, and Rich to discuss the Handsome Family's sixth and oddest album, Singing Bones. Join us as we examine the way these songs shimmer and simmer, and attempt to determine if that's a result of heat rising from the boiling Albuquerque terrain or because we're listening through the murk of disconsolate ghosts. WARNING: We said some bad words in this episode, in case that is something you are concerned about. This month we’re taking a seasonal approach and focusing on all things maple. And, of course, what apparel comes to mind when the opportunity to visit a sugar shack arises? Flannel! We’re looking at the history of the fabric and why it’s so darn useful this time of year. We’re also taking advantage of Steph’s move across the country to experiment with a few different recipes, including microwave maple pie! (#marchmaplemadness) Instead of our usual "what we're obsessed with in history" segment, we're jumping on NPR's #trypod train and recommending hashtags for you to share with your friends and spread the word about podcasts. Torey is recommending Spilled Milk, the comedy food podcast that got her into podcasts, and Steph is recommending Singing Bones, a podcast about the secret history of fairy tales. If you have not already subscribed to us on iTunes or Google Play, now is the time! And if you would be so kind as to leave us a star rating or review, we'd love the feedback. Greetings, Comrades! This episode is dedicated to all the women podcasters out there! I wish all the best for you and for your shows! In this, special episode, I and Our Dark Lady (being from our Dark Myths podcast collective) Matilda Clare Testoni from the Singing Bones podcast, discuss the International Women's Day, Valentina Tereshkhova and how Eastern European women differ culturally and where all of this comes from. And how much of this is actually real and how Soviet government used it for their own political gains. I treated this subject with a lot of respect, because…well, you'll hear on your own. I hope you'll find this episode interesting. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/theeasternborder. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Clare lives in Perth! Isn't that weird? Much more mainstream are her hobbies in shadow puppetry and podcasting about goats murdering wolves. Jokes aside, Clare takes a look at the archetypes of mythology and fairytales which lie underneath the classic stories that tie the history of our stories together. http://singingbonespodcast.com/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Greetings, Comrades! First things first – I'm just married, so that is why the episodes have been a bit late. Sorry for that, but we're working hard to make sure everything's on time and properly done. Secondly – this episode is all about Soviet history textbooks. And…as it was very funny, and I wanted to know what exactly to talk about, and didn't have that much time before the wedding – this is also a Lesser Bonapartes (much more serious than usual) crossover. Glen asked us, what you would like to know, and we provided. And it turned out amazing. Hope you'll enjoy this. And don't worry – there's more incoming in September! And, humongous thank you to everyone who supported our wedding! Me and Alice are very, very thankful, and will post pictures as soon as they're ready. Oh, and today's plug- the wonderful Clara Testoni, from the Singing Bones podcast. Go check her out!
Episode fourteen is about the Norwegian fairy tale collectors Asbjørnsen and Moe. Famous for their rigour, their poetry, and their expression of their national culture. Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe recorded tales such as The Three Billy Goats Gruff, East of The Sun West of The Moon, The Princess on The Glass Hill, as well as many others filled with trolls, hulder, and Ash-Lads. The two men were best friends and lived extraordinary lives and deserve to be as well known worldwide as The Brothers Grimm, Charles Perrault, and Andrew Lang. Not in Print: playwrights off script - on inspiration, process and theatre itself
Tomas, 12, finds himself trapped in a war torn city, separated from his family. He takes refuge in a derelict house with Anna, 16. Every night she tells him folk stories to distract them from the sound of bombs outside, mingling the magic and earthy wisdom of folk tales with the hard-edged story of violence, conflict and the struggle to survive.--Debra Oswald announced to her parents that she was going to be a playwright at twelve years old and she has been sharing stories ever since. Her broad body of work has been seen on screens large and small, watched in darkened theatres across the world, and read by too many people to count. She had early success with her play Dags and continued on with acclaimed works such as The Peach Season, Gary's House, Skate and House on Fire. She was also the creator and head writer for the smash hit television series, Offspring on Channel Ten.
