Kyle sits down with Lindsay on the day of opening to discuss the difficulties of putting up this gargantuan show, in size, scope, set and length and the difficulties inherent in presenting a modern American opera by a Community Theatre Company. Lindsay talks at length about the love of the show, the artform and what FRC has done to proudly bring this show before an audience. Tickets: https://www.artscommons.ca/whats-on/sweeney-todd-frc?hs_preview=OpSTSmgp-171519437223 About the Show: Innocence twists into vengeance on the cobblestone streets of 19th century London. Come along on a sophisticated, macabre, and uncompromising tale as Benjamin Barker, a barber, becomes Sweeney Todd, the demon butcher, and his landlady, the local pie proprietress, goes from making The Worst Pies in London to creating a culinary crime described only as God that's Good. This barbarous ode to vengeance accomplishes the rare task of offering intense drama, darkly side-splitting humour and a ripping musical score.
Solve crimes with the great detective in "Sherlock Holmes Short Stories." Featuring classic tales by Arthur Conan Doyle, this podcast brings you the brilliant deductions and thrilling adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to the world of Holmes, these timeless mysteries will keep you captivated.
All the world's a stage, but as our radio detectives discover this week the theatre offers no respite from mysteries to solve. Each of our stories involves the theatre, with crimes taking place onstage, backstage, and sometimes in the aisles. First, as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce investigate when an actor takes his role as a murderer a bit too seriously in “The Case of Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber” (originally aired on Mutual on January 28, 1946). Super sleuth Philo Vance is called in when an actress is threatened and her understudy is killed in the syndicated mystery “The Backstage Murder Case.” The Saint tries to prevent a play's climactic murder scene from being played for real. Vincent Price stars in “Simon Takes a Curtain Call” (originally aired on NBC on January 14, 1951). Frank Sinatra has to solve a drama critic's murder - a crime that was committed during intermission of a new play - in “Murder on the Aisle” from Rocky Fortune (originally aired on NBC on November 24, 1953). Finally, Bob Bailey stars as Johnny Dollar in “The Heatherstone Players Matter” (AFRS rebroadcast from July 14, 1957), where a hated ham actor meets his maker and Johnny has to find out whodunnit.

Jeff and Richard belatedly celebrate the birthday of Ol' Blood and Thunder, or Mr. Murder, Tod Slaughter. Slaughter has been called a British Boris Karloff. Indeed he made a series of films in the 1930s as similar to each other as Karloff's mad scientist movies were in the United States. However, with his roots in the theater, Slaughter was a unique master of Victorian melodrama, perhaps best known for playing Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, both on stage and screen. He stops short of being a moustache-twirling villain, but never retreats from a maniacal laugh. Let your hosts be your guide for which of Slaughter's films are hits and which ones are misses. They may not be your cup of tea, but we encourage you to take a sip. Just don't drink too much in one sitting...

The Grammy-Award winning baritone first auditioned to play the Demon Barber of Fleet Street back in high school. He didn't get the part then; but he starred in in the latest Broadway revival. Groban will leave the role this month. He spoke with Fresh Air's Ann Marie Baldonado about his affinity for Stephen Sondheim, poking fun at his own image on TV, and starting his singing career as a teen. Also, Justin Chang reviews the new film Memory.
Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, was Stephen Sondheim's tenth show and is generally considered his masterwork, a melodically and dramatically adventurous piece that's been produced in both musical theatre and opera houses the world over. Though billed as a musical, it's roughly 80 percent sung, meaning it feels more like it's been baked into an operetta (pun very much intended), complete with a semi-domesticated serial killer and an upwardly mobile cannibal cook. The original 1979 Broadway production won eight Tony Awards, including recognition as the season's best musical. Its ravishing, deeply emotional music combined with zany moments of levity have made it a favorite for many, but our hosts have both love and gentle (and hilarious!) criticism to share with those who care to attend our tale...er...podcast.

This podcast covers episodes 11,085 to 11,090. The fallout from Super Soap Week begins to settle with a couple of loose ends still to tie up. A slip of the tongue costs George an employee and forces a reconciliation with Todd. Ed is overly sensitive about financial matters and takes an immediate dislike to Dee Dee's new beau. Tim's experience of spending a couple of nights in the boot of a car leaves him cursed with strange third-person flashbacks. Peter is not seen as the knight in shining armor that he'd like to think he is, and soon gets a visit from DS Swain who learns about the bad blood between him and Stephen. Ryan and Daisy's talk to the youths at the STC helps them put things into perspective but also threatens to bring them closer together. Shona does the Macarena. David stocks up on murderabilia. Norris's credit rating takes a hit.
ALRIGHT! YOU SIR, how about a pod? Now, this podcast might not come with the musical qualities of Stephen Sondheim, however we can sure talk about his masterful work alongside Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and the rest of this cast & crew that brought the iconic vengeful barber to life in 2007's Horror Musical classic. Listen, because we all deserve to... well, maybe not do EXACTLY what Sweeney wants us to do in the song, but maybe we deserve a little episode about blood, gore, and a kickass score.
