Andrew Bird has been on a quest for meaning in sound since childhood, starting with the violin at age four and earning a degree in violin performance from Northwestern University. His journey has taken him from classical and folk roots to the vibrant Chicago swing scene, to creative isolation in a barn in Western Illinois, and eventually to become a gendre defying artist and composer with a unique voice. Andrew's lyrics are both confessional and impressionist, often leading listeners on a journey through evocative imagery. With just a looping pedal, he reinvented his sound, blending classical, folk, and indie rock and crafted a distinct sonic landscape that defines his music today. After nearly three decades and 20 albums, Andrew continues to evolve. His latest release, Sunday Morning Put On, pays tribute to jazz standards while maintaining his signature sound. He describes it as a “sabbatical” project, giving him space to reflect and create without pressure. Just recently, he released Cunningham Bird, a tribute to the classic Buckingham Nicks album. Here he shares insights about his early days, the isolation that shaped him, songwriting as a form of “speaking in tongues”and the lessons learned from performing standards. www.third-story.com www.leosidran.substack.com www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story
On this episode of Songs of Our Lives, it's amelia courthouse! I loved her last album, “ruby glass,” a lot, but the connection with the new one, “broken things,” runs so much deeper. We talked about growing up with church hymns and the affinity we still feel for a lot of that music before diving into one hell of an episode. We get into why there can only ever be one Leonard Cohen, obsessing over 80s Bob Dylan, finally getting Fleetwood Mac , the magic and catharsis of Larry Young, Beth Nielson Chapman crushing us, Vince Gill, The Handsome Family, The Velvets, and so much more!Listen to all of amelia's picks HEREamelia courthouse “broken things”S P I N S T E RSongs of Our Lives is a podcast series hosted by Brad Rose of Foxy Digitalis that explores the music that's made us and left a certain mark. Próximo programa: Sopapo Oriental - Legend Of The Northern Blade / Tsuyoshi.

Ida Nilsen has played in Beans, Cunt, Great Aunt Ida, the Buttless Chaps, Radiogram, The Gay and others. Ida was involved with The Sugar Refinery venue as a musician, employee and owner. The Sugar Refinery was a vegetarian restaurant and music venue from the mid '90s to 2003 at 1115 Granville Street. It was known for fostering local music projects which were experimental, collaborative, and whimsical. It was the site of a 48 hour show by the band Beans, who played there dozens of times. Other venues visited: The Blinding Light!, an underground cinema which ran from 1998-2003 at 36 Powell Street. The Marine Club was at 573 Homer Street and lasted from 1957-2007. The site is now a parking lot. Other venues we passed: the Brickyard, The Gold Saucer. Bands discussed: The Beans, the Ids, the Molestics, Kirsten and Jim, Show Business Giants, Handsome Family, Vic Chestnut, Sawdust Collector. Thank you to Kellarissa for the original theme music. The untold story of Chicago's pivotal role as a country and folk music capital. Chicago is revered as a musical breeding ground, having launched major figures like blues legend Muddy Waters, gospel soul icon Mavis Staples, hip-hop firebrand Kanye West, and the jazz-rock band that shares its name with the city. Far less known, however, is the vital role Chicago played in the rise of prewar country music, the folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s, and the contemporary offspring of those scenes. In Country and Midwestern: Chicago in the History of Country Music and the Folk Revival (U Chicago Press, 2023), veteran journalist Mark Guarino tells the epic century-long story of Chicago's influence on sounds typically associated with regions further south. Drawing on hundreds of interviews and deep archival research, Guarino tells a forgotten story of music, migration, and the ways that rural culture infiltrated urban communities through the radio, the automobile, and the railroad. The Midwest's biggest city was the place where rural transplants could reinvent themselves and shape their music for the new commercial possibilities the city offered. Years before Nashville emerged as the commercial and spiritual center of country music, major record labels made Chicago their home and recorded legendary figures like Bill Monroe, The Carter Family, and Gene Autry. The National Barn Dance--broadcast from the city's South Loop starting in 1924--flourished for two decades as the premier country radio show before the Grand Ole Opry. Guarino chronicles the makeshift niche scenes like "Hillbilly Heaven" in Uptown, where thousands of relocated Southerners created their own hardscrabble honky-tonk subculture, as well as the 1960s rise of the Old Town School of Folk Music, which eventually brought national attention to local luminaries like John Prine and Steve Goodman. The story continues through the end of the twentieth century and into the present day, where artists like Jon Langford, The Handsome Family, and Wilco meld contemporary experimentation with country traditions. Featuring a foreword from Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Robbie Fulks and casting a cross-genre net that stretches from Bob Dylan to punk rock, Country and Midwestern rediscovers a history as sprawling as the Windy City--celebrating the creative spirit that modernized American folk idioms, the colorful characters who took them into new terrain, and the music itself, which is still kicking down doors even today. Mark Guarino covers national news and culture from Chicago for the Washington Post, ABC News, the New York Times, and other outlets. He was the Midwest bureau chief for the Christian Science Monitor for seven years. Mark on Twitter. Bradley Morgan is a media arts professional in Chicago and author of U2's The Joshua Tree: Planting Roots in Mythic America. We were very excited to talk to the guy (forgot to ask his name) behind the blog christmasunderground.com, which is currently on its 10th year. People that know Brandon and I know we love Christmas music, though we tend toward Culturcide, The Frogs, and a guy impersonating Randy Newman performing "All I Want For Christmas Is You" on YouTube that got DMCA'd a few years back and now is impossible to find (outside of my hard drive). Jennifer likes the Sufjan Stevens albums and I'm actually not sure what all else. But she's a real Christian, so, there's that. But today we got to talk about the unfathomable depths of original Christmas music available on Bandcamp, Soundcloud, MySpace, and countless CD compilations and albums from the last 20+ years. We're not even touching on the history of R&B and novelty 7"s, the original run of classic records, the local music from nearly every industrialized nation, and so on. There is so much fucking Christmas music out there. If you want to know more about that, check out the documentary our guest mentions, Jingle Bell Rocks! The link will take you to JustWatch, which lists everywhere it's available to rent or stream (I signed up for a free trial of Fandor to see it). Christmas Underground focuses more on the sincere, indie side of things. There's a new mix posted a few days before Christmas each year and 50+ posts about his assorted finds leading up to that. He even touches on some new standards brewing in the underground that even I wasn't familiar with (most notably, So Much Wine by Handsome Family). Listen to the episode and when you're done check out the following links to Christmas Underground to hear and learn more about his favorites. Phoebe Bridgers - So Much Wine Traveller - Christmas Eve at Kroger Annie Booth - Christmas Time (Keep It Together) Charlie Hand Movement - Baubles Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas (compilation) Sorry about everything I was wrong about again this episode. See everyone a few more times this month for more of the annual Christmas music nonsense.

Follow Mixtapes With Mike on Instagram here...https://www.instagram.com/mixtapeswithmikepodcast/ This week I sat down with artist Craig Davison. I first discovered his work in a little gallery in a retail village called Swinfen Hall. There were a fair few chintzy gift shops selling stuff your mum would love and an overpriced coffee shop but there was also a gallery. I was blown away by the style of his paintings, he essentially paints kids pretending to be their heroes with the shadow of that hero looming over them in the ether. There were also some pencil sketches, one of which was of Robin Williams which I still regret not buying there and then. Doing this podcast has been so much fun and recently I've been lucky enough to speak to some bonafide heroes of mine, I never thought in a million years I get Craig on and he was such a lovely bloke to talk to. If you enjoy listening half as much as I liked making this, please pass it on, leave a review and help me reach more people. [Voz de mujer] Los 7 Pecados Digitales by SEOmental. - ¡Oh! Muy bonita - Eres encantador, Patrick. - Jean. - ¿Qué, Patrick? - ¿Te gustaría acompañarme a cenar? - Sabrina, ¿por qué no bailas un poco? Cristi, arrodíllate en la cama. Aún no hemos acabado. - Lleva un traje precioso, parece suave. - No creo que pueda controlarme. Si te quedas, ocurrirá algo malo. Me siento letal. [Voz de mujer] Los 7 Pecados Digitales by SEOmental. [Suena diálogo de serie] - ¿Se asusta fácilmente? - Todavía no. - Manténgase a la derecha. Le he puesto una silla. - Estupendo, gracias. No parará jamás. [Voz de mujer] Los 7 Pecados Digitales by SEOmental. [Voz de mujer] Los 7 Pecados Digitales by SEOmental. Llega el momento del pecador digital invitado. Llega tu momento. ¿A quién tengo hoy? No quiero hacer spoilers. Es: "For an Angel" del alemán Paul Van Dyk. Chao. [Voz de mujer] Los 7 Pecados Digitales by SEOmental. [Voz de mujer] Los 7 Pecados Digitales by SEOmental. Es "Far from any Road" de The Handsome Family. [Voz de mujer] Los 7 Pecados Digitales by SEOmental. [Voz de mujer] Los 7 Pecados Digitales by SEOmental. [Voz de mujer] Los 7 Pecados Digitales by SEOmental. [Voz de mujer] Los 7 Pecados Digitales by SEOmental. Far from any road, husband-and-wife duo The Handsome Family create beautiful indie folk/country that uses centuries-old musical traditions as a vehicle to explore, mourn, embrace, or giggle at human nature (and folly) from a perspective all their own. On this episode, Will enlists Amanda, Dan, and Rich to discuss the Handsome Family's sixth and oddest album, Singing Bones. Join us as we examine the way these songs shimmer and simmer, and attempt to determine if that's a result of heat rising from the boiling Albuquerque terrain or because we're listening through the murk of disconsolate ghosts. La primera es “Trapped in the Fog”. # Llegamos a la tercera canción, “Keep on Fallin’”. Foto Joana Serrat: Joan Alsina
Gothic folk duo The Handsome Family meet up with Marc while he's in Albuquerque to talk about American roots music, carnival sideshows, meeting your heroes, and dealing with bipolarity. But first, documentary filmmaker Sam Pollard joins Marc in the garage to talk about his new film Two Trains Runnin', a look at the summer of 1964, as history converged in unexpected ways. The Handsome Family gained wider notoriety for providing the theme to HBO's True Detective. But the duo's dark, literate songwriting has been acclaimed by critics for decades. Rennie and Brett Sparks of The Handsome Family join hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot for a conversation and performance. Plus, a review of the new album from pop superstar Lady Gaga.
Well it has been a somewhat eventful reading week. I went to Toronto for 24 hours for a series of meetings at the Council of Ontario Universities, and then we went to see a band last night. Yup, we actually went out! The band we saw was 'Whitehorse'. They were pretty good. They reminded Isabelle of The Handsome Family (of True Detective Season 1 fame) and last night in the car when she said that I was happy as the whole time they were playing I was thinking 'they remind me of someone.....' We then talked about the end of the fall break and what students get out of university. A lot of times they don't even know what skills they do get, which oddly was one of the themes of the meeting I was at in Toronto.
Philip King (Scullion, Other Voices) talks about a song he loves, and there's new music from Keaton Henson, The Handsome Family, Maria Kelly, Kim Gordon, Emma Pollock, Warpaint, Grandaddy, The Album Leaf, plus some Scullion and Jape. Strange Brew - indie beats, alternative rock and good vibrations from the past, the present and the not too distant future with gugai. Every Thursday night at Róisín Dubh, Galway, Ireland and every Friday at 9pm on 8radio.com. www.facebook.com/strangebrewgalway twitter/@gugai gugai@roisindubh.net

Husband-and-wife duo Brett and Rennie Sparks are better known as The Handsome Family. You might know them from their 20-year-long career, which has turned out 10 albums, or from their theme tune to ‘True Detective’, which brought them a vast new audience. This September The Handsome Family will release a brand-new album called ‘Unseen’. We preview a couple of tracks in a live performance at Midori House.

A renowned former music critic, Kandia Crazy Horse's journey from scribing about music to performing her own happened unexpectedly. A Country-Western blend is her milieu which naturally reflects her rural Southern roots of Hee Haw and 1960s-70s free-form radio. Her exquisite 2014 debut, Stampede, was awarded "4-stars" from the British MOJO magazine. This year will hopefully see the release of Canyons, the second installment of a planned tetralogy. Fingers are crossed! Visit Kandia Crazy Horse online: http://kandiacrazyhorse.com/ Talk Music Talk Playlist/047: Country-Tinted Dreams This week's TMT Spotify playlist begins with the Country-Western sounds of Kandia Crazy Horse as the inspiration. From there it zig-zags through the Americana of the Handsome Family and Wilco, singer-songwriter heroes Townes Van Zandt and Gram Parsons, a country detour from Elton John, pure country from the Carter Family and classics from Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn. All that and more in a varied 90 minutes of Country's best. Artist and designer Brendan Dawes is back on Unfinished Business this week. We get started by talking about past popular pop princes and princesses S Club 7, The Handsome Family and Bren’s one day trip to Argentina. For the remainder of the show, we talk about when it’s acceptable to give our time for free and when we should say no. Why every project should include a ‘goodwill’ budget and what the heck are those party paper and whistle things that come out of Christmas crackers called?
Hopefully the name "The Handsome Family" rings a bell. Even if it doesn't, there's a good chance you'll recognize at least one of the husband-and-wife duo's songs. That's thanks to the HBO sensation "True Detective," which used "Far From Any Road" as its theme.
I didn't have long to chat with Andrew Bird during Bonnaroo, but thankfully I had something to dive right in with: his new album, full of songs written by The Handsome Family (whose music you may recognize thanks to "True Detective"). It's out now, and it's called "Things Are Really Great Here, Sort Of..."
The family that plays together, stays together, or so the saying goes. And so in honor of Father's Day, Jim and Greg play music from their favorite Family Bands. Plus they review yet another family effort: the new record from americana act The Handsome Family.

T-Bar’s got some ‘splainin’ to do since he posted his wacky Top 10 list on Steel Belted Radio.com, so we grill him on that and he plays a few to try to defend himself. Luckily, our special guests came in just in time to spare him. And what guests they are, Romi Mayes and Jason Nowicki dropped by in advance of their live album recording at the West End, to play us some new songs and talk about what’s going on.
