 ”Words Will Come,” a new work by Portland-based playwright Melody Erfani, focuses on a young Iranian-American girl’s experience with learning, language and identity while navigating dyslexia.  The production takes a multi-sensory approach, using movement, projections, stage setting and fractured language to immerse the audience in the mind of someone experiencing dyslexia.  We’ll hear from Erfani about her own experience with dyslexia, and how guiding her young niece through a dyslexia diagnosis helped inspire this theatrical work.  “Words Will Come” is showing at Shaking the Tree Theater in Southeast Portland through June 28th.

A Southeast Portland, Oregon business owner says a heroic kitten likely saved his life as a fast-moving fire destroyed the home he spent years rebuilding. Police in southern New Jersey say they went from making an arrest to making a food delivery after pulling over a DoorDash driver with outstanding warrants. An unassuming house in Southeast Portland’s Buckman neighborhood was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places. Once known as “Juniper House,” the building served as one of the first end-of-life care homes for AIDS patients in the Pacific Northwest in the late 1980s. An OPB documentary at the time explored the lives of some of the patients in Juniper House and the neighboring Assisi House, which provided a range of care for patients with HIV/AIDS. Jan Weyeneth is one of the co-founders of Juniper House. Cayla McGrail is a former associate project manager for Portland’s LGBTQ+ Historic Sites Project, which sponsored the house’s listing. We first spoke with Weyeneth and McGrail in April 2025 about Juniper House and the importance of documenting queer history in Portland.

According to data recently published by the Portland Business Journal, the most popular shopping district in our city is located in Southeast Portland's Richmond neighborhood. In the last three months of 2025, Hawthorne Blvd. saw 1.6 million visitors, more than any other business strip in our city.
