Supreme Pressure: The Rejection of John J. Parker and the Birth of the Modern Supreme Court Confirmation Process (Palgrave Macmillan, 2025) examines the 1930 Supreme Court nomination of John J. Parker, a turning point in American judicial politics. Alarmed by some of his past statements and opinions, labor and civil rights groups mounted a fierce campaign to block his confirmation. Not only was control of the Supreme Court hanging in the balance, but Parker's nomination symbolized a profound clash of ideologies, political agendas, economic doctrines, and interpretations of the Constitution. Their efforts sparked a dramatic Senate revolt, marking the first successful grassroots campaign to block a Supreme Court nominee. By exploring the circumstances of Parker's rejection, this book traces how that battle laid the foundation for today's highly partisan and contentious confirmation process. The book also reintroduces Parker as a consequential but largely forgotten figure in American jurisprudence--one whose rulings helped shape the South's legal response to Brown v. Board of Education. Beyond the nomination fight, it delves into Parker's political campaigns, judicial opinions, and relationships with key public figures, charting his dramatic rise, humiliating defeat, and enduring influence. Packed with intrigue, strategy, and the clash of competing ideologies, this is the story of how one nomination forever changed the rules of the game. Learn more about your ad choices. Mismatched sex drives in marriage? You're not alone—and it's not a problem to fix, but an opportunity to grow together. Most couples (up to 90%!) will experience periods where their sexual desires don't line up perfectly. It's completely normal—and it's a chance to build deeper understanding, communication, and compassion in your relationship. Getting honest about differences means you can meet each other where you are, as a team. This conversation is full of encouragement for the couple (or the spouse) who is feeling the disconnect from the different drives. Join Dr. Kim and J. Parker as they talk about normalizing this topic and making your marriage (and sex life) awesome. Episode Highlights: Majority of couples face the struggle of mismatched sex drives. It's important that the lines of communication are open when talking about desire, frequency and expectation. Open, ongoing communication is key to building intimacy.  The way we think about intimacy is often shaped by cultural messages, church teaching, or our upbringing.   Quotes from Today's Episode: Mismatched sex drives aren't the exception—they're the norm. Instead of seeing it as a sign something's wrong, view it as an opportunity to communicate, show compassion, and navigate intimacy as a team. The old script that ‘men want sex and women want romance' sells everyone short. You can crave both romance and intimacy, regardless of who in your marriage has the higher desire. A thriving sex life isn't automatic—it's something you cultivate over time, through learning, honesty, and growth together. Sometimes a gap in desire isn't about your relationship at all, but about real-life pressures. There are times when speaking up isn't nagging—it's partnership. Express what you need, but do it out of love and with respect, seeking to connect and understand, not just correct.   Questions for Reflection: When was the last time you and your spouse had a conversation about frequency?  Do you feel comfortable telling your spouse what you need in regards to physical intimacy?  What's one small step you could take this week to communicate more openly about your needs and create healthier intimacy together?   Mentioned in this Episode: Hot, Holy and Humerous J Parker is on Instagram! For today's conversation, we are talking very openly about the physical relationship within marriage. (If you have little ears around, consider listening on headphones or waiting until you are alone.)Many marriage resources presume that the husband has a higher sex drive, but in about 25% of marriages, it's actually the wife who experiences more feelings of desire. When women have the higher level of desire for sex and intimacy, they can often experience feelings of rejection when their spouse doesn't reciprocate. They may even wonder what's wrong with them, and unfortunately, they often have nowhere to turn for advice. For nearly 15 years, J. Parker has been the voice behind the blog, Hot, Holy & Humorous. She's the author of five books on sexual intimacy and marriage, including her most recent title, The Higher Desire Wife: Understanding and Help for Christian Women Navigating Mismatched Sex Drives. J. holds a master's degree in counseling, but it was her personal testimony that fueled her desire to write about God's design for sex and marriage. In this episode, you'll hear:How to navigate sex when you and your spouse's desires are mismatchedHow your sex drive can change over timeThe benefits of scheduling sexAnd more! This is a candid conversation I wish had existed early on in my own marriage, and my hope is that you will glean helpful information to guide you in your physical relationship within marriage.Find resources mentioned and more in the show notes: jillsavage.org/j-parker-263Check out our other resources: Mark and Jill's Marriage Story Marriage Coaching Marriage 2.0 Intensives Speaking Schedule Book Mark and Jill to Speak Online Courses Books Marriage Resources: Infidelity Recovery For Happy Marriages For Hurting Marriages For Marriages Where You're the Only One Wanting to Get Help Mom Resources: New/Preschool Moms Moms with Gradeschoolers Moms with Teens and Tweens Moms with Kids Who Are Launching Empty Nest...

One thing I've noticed about higher desire wives: they feel so lonely. They think they're the only wife on the plane that has the higher desire for sex. They often talk about how they hear about their other lady friends complain about how their husbands are always pursuing them and wanting to have sex with them and how they're tired of that. And the higher desire wives themselves think, "If only my husband pursued me that way....Is something wrong with me? Did I marry the wrong person?" My great friend J. In this conversation, J. Parker joins me as we talk through the dynamics of desire within relationships, particularly focusing on the experiences of higher desire wives. We discuss the societal perceptions of sexual desire, the complexities of male sexuality, and the various factors that can influence sexual interest in relationships. The conversation highlights the importance of understanding these dynamics to foster better communication and intimacy between partners. We also explore the complexities of desire gaps in relationships, particularly focusing on higher desire wives. Learn more about J Parker and get her book here at https://hotholyhumorous.com Takeaways The higher desire wife dynamic is often overlooked in resources. Many higher desire wives feel like there's something wrong with them. Research suggests that 15-25% of marriages experience this dynamic. Male sexuality is more complex than often portrayed. Desire dynamics are comparative and not indicative of worth. Insecurities can arise for both partners in these dynamics. Health issues can significantly impact sexual desire. Screen time and distractions can hinder intimacy. Sexual orientation and identity can complicate desire dynamics. Communication and reassurance are key in navigating these challenges. We can make a challenging situation into an impossible situation. Do we face these with a little more courageousness? Enjoy the show! On the Xtended version … In the XTD content we discuss the importance of communication, understanding each other's needs, and managing expectations in marriage. Strategies for improving intimacy and creating opportunities for connection are emphasized, along with the significance of recognizing and addressing personal insecurities and stressors that may impact sexual desire. Humans are an intensely social species. We experience social interactions as rewarding from infancy, and the social cognitive skills that we develop in the context of our earliest interpersonal attachments are critical for our survival and personal well being. Lack of social connection is common in many psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. In some disorders, like autism spectrum disorder, social cognition and social interaction impairments are the defining, core feature. Yet, despite the importance of social functioning in humans, our understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms that regulate social behavior is limited. This lecture will describe the roles of two neuropeptides, oxytocin and vasopressin, in the regulation of social behavior in animals, and how findings from this research are providing fundamental insights into human social disorders, with a particular focus on vasopressin and autism spectrum disorder.
