We discuss the societal perceptions of sexual desire, the complexities of male sexuality, and the various factors that can influence sexual interest in relationships. The conversation highlights the importance of understanding these dynamics to foster better communication and intimacy between partners. We also explore the complexities of desire gaps in relationships, particularly focusing on higher desire wives. Learn more about J Parker and get her book here at https://hotholyhumorous.com Takeaways The higher desire wife dynamic is often overlooked in resources. Many higher desire wives feel like there's something wrong with them. Research suggests that 15-25% of marriages experience this dynamic. Male sexuality is more complex than often portrayed. Desire dynamics are comparative and not indicative of worth. Insecurities can arise for both partners in these dynamics. Health issues can significantly impact sexual desire. Screen time and distractions can hinder intimacy. Sexual orientation and identity can complicate desire dynamics. Communication and reassurance are key in navigating these challenges. We can make a challenging situation into an impossible situation. Do we face these with a little more courageousness? Enjoy the show! On the Xtended version … In the XTD content we discuss the importance of communication, understanding each other's needs, and managing expectations in marriage. Strategies for improving intimacy and creating opportunities for connection are emphasized, along with the significance of recognizing and addressing personal insecurities and stressors that may impact sexual desire. Humans are an intensely social species. We experience social interactions as rewarding from infancy, and the social cognitive skills that we develop in the context of our earliest interpersonal attachments are critical for our survival and personal well being. Lack of social connection is common in many psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. In some disorders, like autism spectrum disorder, social cognition and social interaction impairments are the defining, core feature. Yet, despite the importance of social functioning in humans, our understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms that regulate social behavior is limited. This lecture will describe the roles of two neuropeptides, oxytocin and vasopressin, in the regulation of social behavior in animals, and how findings from this research are providing fundamental insights into human social disorders, with a particular focus on vasopressin and autism spectrum disorder. “Love is a choice you make everyday.” ~ Gary Chapman Guest Introduction: Hey, my friends, I'm Cindy MacMillan and I am so glad you're here. Welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast. Exploring the Seasons of Life is a metaphor for understanding the complexities of being alive. It is a reminder that life is filled with ups and downs, joys and sorrows, and moments of both growth and stagnation. Life is a journey, and each season brings its own unique lessons and experiences. As we move through the different “seasons” of life, we learn, we grow, and we become better versions of ourselves. Life is a beautiful and precious gift, and it is up to us to make the most of it. Each week I interview spiritual explorers, amazing coaches, and authors from all walks of life about beginnings, endings and the messy bits in between. Self-love, well-being, and mindset are at the heart of our conversations because once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well. I am thrilled to introduce my guest. J. Parker is a Christian sex author, speaker, blogger, and podcaster. Her ministry, Hot, Holy & Humorous, focuses on helping others understand God's design for sexual intimacy in marriage. J has a personal story of redemption in the area of sexuality, holds a master's degree in counseling, and lives in Texas with her fabulous but oh-so logical husband, fondly nicknamed "Spock." Here's a glimpse of our conversation: J. Parker, welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast. 2:51 Professionally, because I'm talking a lot of times to wives and or couples, about sexual intimacy and marriage, there are seasons for that in your marriage. So, this idea that you get married, and then you're just gonna have a sex life, and that's the sex life you have for your whole marriage. It's just not true. And the more that we understand that there are ups and downs and sweet spots and challenges and all of that, then the better we're able to weather that and create something really beautiful. 10:01 I would say the hot part to me represents that this is supposed to be something that is pleasurable, that is mutually desired, mutually satisfying. It's supposed to feel good. Sex is supposed to feel good, and supposed to be something you enjoy doing. 13:35 One is, we don't necessarily always have the language for it. Some people grew up with, this isn't talked about at all. And so they don't really know how to talk about it. Other people grew up with a situation of it always being talked about in crass language. And so they know they're not supposed to do that with their spouse, but they don't know what else to do. 16:03 I think that we have to understand that sexual intimacy is not just the sex itself. And I'll say that this is something I was hearing recently, another author on sex, Dr. Juli Slattery talk about who's excellent. How even talking about sex and getting comfortable talking about sex is something that builds sexual intimacy and makes the experience of being physical together later better. 21:07 The first thing I would say is you can have a conversation and say, hey, it really makes me feel great when you initiate. 25:04 I would say in almost every marriage, somebody's higher drive than the other. But, I guess statistically, it seems like about 20% of couples are fairly well matched, in another 20% to 25% the wife is the higher desire spouse. And in the rest, the husband is higher drive. I mean, they're not perfect statistics, but it's pretty good. I've looked at a lot of research on this. 32:28 I would say in those situations, it's considered a sexless marriage, if you're having sex 10 or fewer times a year. Because you're really not getting the benefits of sexual intimacy in a marriage. And there are really a whole lot of benefits to your relationship, even to your health. I mean, sex is really good for your marriage. YOU CAN FIND J. PARKER AT: Website Instagram Blog Thanks for listening! Intimate Covenant Podcast - biblical perspective for a fuller marriage and extraordinary sex
In this episode, Matt & Jenn are joined by Christian sex blogger and author (and friend), J. Parker of Hot, Holy & Humorous, to discuss the non-typical dynamic when the wife is the sexual pursuer. While not the majority, relationships where the wife has the higher sexual desire is certainly more common than many would think. Most of the time, this dynamic does not indicate physical, emotional, or spiritual problems in the relationship— it is simply a result of individual variability and circumstances.Thankfully, more people are now willing to talk about this dynamic more openly, including our friend J Parker of Hot, Holy & Humorous. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. J. Parker is a Christian sex author and blogger at Hot, Holy, & Humorous and today she shares the story that led her there. J. grew up a pastor's kid who went her own way as a young adult, including with sexuality. The baggage she took into marriage caused some difficult years and J. talks openly about their struggle. A practice of clinging to Scripture refined her until one day she realized her marriage was a lot better. When God began nudging J. to start sharing her story, Hot, Holy & Humorous was born. J. is a example and teacher of the biblical worldview of the body and sexuality. Please listen and share with a friend! Stories J. shared with us: Growing up as a drag racing preacher's kid Finding Christ after college and returning to her childhood faith Meeting her husband after deciding she was no longer interested men Dealing with the baggage of her previous life after she was married How God led her to Christlikeness toward her spouse Making a spiritual discipline of 1 Corinthians 13 and why you have to stick with it for awhile The verse that helped her work through shame about sex Reluctantly starting a blog as a respone to God's nudging What is a biblical worldview of sexuality for single people? Why you can let go of your insecurities and give yourself to your spouse Humorous: don't take sex so seriously How to handle expectations in marriage Great quotes from J.: We use our bodies in marriage to express even the love of Christ to our spouse. I found myself captivated by the real Jesus who was not exactly the guy that I had grown up with on the flannel board in Sunday School. I'm a big believer in finding verses that speak to you in your particular situation and making those a part of your self talk. If something is true about how God wants us to be and how he wants us to treat others, then all those things are true in the marriage bed as well. The biggest thing we can do [to address expectations] is to check in with our spouse and believe what they say.
