Three of Oregon’s college basketball teams are set to compete in this year’s NCAA Tournaments, including the Oregon State women’s team. After losing some of their best players to the transfer portal during the collapse of the Pac-12 conference, the Beavers came back to win their first conference championship since 2016. They’re now the 14th seed in the women’s bracket and will take on third-ranked North Carolina on Saturday. The University of Oregon men’s team is making its second consecutive appearance this year. The fifth-ranked men’s team is set to take on 12th-seed Liberty University on Friday. The 10th-ranked Oregon women’s team will make its first March Madness appearance since 2022 when it takes on seventh-seed Vanderbilt on Friday. KOIN 6 sports anchor and reporter Brenna Greene joins us to talk about all of those contests and more
Our country has a terrible history of providing proper care for people suffering from severe mental illness, and civil commitment (court-ordered involuntary treatment) is especially controversial. Today we're talking with KOIN investigative reporter Elise Haas about new legislation that aims to reform our state's civil commitment process and expand mental health treatment facilities. We've had a week to process Oregon's 41-21 loss to Ohio State in Pasadena. While the Ducks were badly outplayed by their opponent, the system that put them in that matchup remains a topic of much debate and scrutiny. On this week's episode of the Oregonian Sports Podcast, hosts Bill Oram and Brenna Greene of KOIN unpack the New Year's debacle, including whether the Ducks should consider any staffing changes. Also discussed on this week's episode: • Will top teams start to manipulate their seasons, including resting players in conference title games? • If the Ducks are gradually leveling up, does that make next year their year to win in the playoff? • With the NBA's trade deadline a month away, what are reasonable expectations for the Blazers front office? • The Blazers have the NBA's sixth-worst record, but with lottery odds front of mind, are they winning too many games? The Blazers went from one of the worst losses of Chauncey Billups' tenure as head coach to one of the most galvanizing wins in a mere 48 hours. Is there any path for Billups to find long-term success in Portland or will his coaching arc have to follow the path of his Hall of Fame playing career that required many stops before he found his footing? That's the question Bill Oram and Brenna Greene from KOIN consider on this week's episode of the Oregonian Sports Podcast. Also, Bill breaks down a dominant performance by Robert Williams III against Minnesota which should feel bittersweet for Blazers fans. Williams is likely the next player the Blazers will try to move. Other topics discussed on this episode: • An update on Kelly Graves and the top-25 Oregon women • Did Oregon have its one Big Ten letdown game the Ducks win against Maryland? • What next in Corvallis now that the Beavers are likely out of bowl contention? Oregon will play the highlight of its road schedule this season when it travels to Ann Arbor to face Michigan. The Ducks beat the Wolverines in front of 109,733 people at the Big House in 2007, but few current Ducks really know what to expect in college football's largest stadium. Derrick Harmon, however, does. The D-lineman who previously played at Michigan State said on Wednesday that games at Michigan are “not that loud.” Is that just trash talk from a player predisposed not to like Michigan? Or is there something to it? Sports columnist Bill Oram and Brenna Greene of KOIN debate that on this week's episode of The Oregonian Sports podcast. Also discussed on this week's episode: • A recap of Sport Oregon's first-of-its-kind Night of Champions, which honored Megan Rapinoe and Pat Casey, among others • Breaking down the No. 1 Ducks game at Michigan. Can anything stop the Ducks? • Donovan Clingan has been dominant in limited minutes, when will his time on the court increase — and what does that mean for Deandre Ayton? • No, seriously, what does that mean for Ayton? Bill and Brenna come to different conclusions. • Reflecting on Christine Sinclair's impact in Portland and beyond. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Timbers season-ending 5-0 loss to Vancouver on Wednesday was bad enough, but vague and intriguing late-night tweets from star player Evander indicating actions by the team's management were at the team's struggles turned a bad night into an outright scandal. On the latest episode of the Oregonian Sports Podcast, sports columnist Bill Oram explains what's at the root of the issues between player and club, and why money — like with most things — is to blame. Also, co-host Brenna Greene of KOIN describes the bad vibes at the Blazers home opener, and why it was even more dispiriting than she expected for a team with little ambition of winning games this season. Other topics discussed include: • What moves the Blazers need to make to address some of their organizational woes • Explaining what went wrong with the rollout of the Blazers over-the-air broadcast and why it will eventually pay off for viewers • The Ducks are No. 1 but ... who cares? No. 3 Oregon's win over second-ranked Ohio State was always one of the most anticipated games of the year. Both teams, college football fans and reporters, had Oct. 12 circled on their calendars for a year. But no matter how great the hype was, the two powerhouse programs managed to deliver a game that was even better. On this week's episode of the Oregonian Sports podcast, columnist Bill Oram and Brenna Greene of KOIN 6 reflect on the biggest moments from one of the most important games of the college football season. Also discussed on this week's episode: • Will Dan Lanning's clever penalty ploy lead to an NCAA rule change? • The Ducks didn't just beat the Buckeyes, they beat them down. • Is there any risk of a Ducks letdown against Purdue? The Pac-12 landed a whale in its realignment rush this week when Gonzaga agreed to join as a non-football member. The Zags have been to the NCAA Tournament for 25 years, the Sweet 16 for the last nine, and two Final Fours in the last decade. They dramatically boost the hoops profile of the reimagined conference. On this episode of the Oregon Sports podcast, columnist Bill Oram and KOIN's Brenna Greene — and Gonzaga alum — answer the question of why this was the right move for Zags now. Also discussed on this week's episode: • Where the Pac-12 turns next, and if Gonzaga's arrival might lure back some schools that already said no • Brenna's takeaways from Trail Blazers' media day, including a failed attempt at humor from Scoot Henderson • The Blazers roster construction may make for some hurt feelings. Bill even predicts that one high-paid starter could end up out of the rotation. • Some parting thoughts on Jonathan Smith's return to Oregon with the Michigan State Spartans. The Pac-12 sits with seven teams after raiding the Mountain West Conference, but was stymied in its pursuit of UNLV as well as a handful of universities in the American Athletic Conference. Hosts Bill Oram and Brenna Greene of KOIN attempt to answer that question on a jam-packed episode of the Oregonian Sports Podcast that starts with the breaking news of soccer icon Christine Sinclair's retirement. Also discussed on this episode: • How the Pac-12 could have avoided this stalemate with the Mountain West and the one school it might have hinged on • Bill says Christine Sinclair played a leading role in the greatest sporting event he ever covered • Dreaming of baseball in Portland? What more the Diamond Project could do to jump more established bidders for MLB expansion • The Blazers finally do something that earns universal praise Learn more about your ad choices. It's wise to not overreact to any Week 1 result. The Ducks beat Idaho, so keep it moving. But how do you not overreact to what was then the No. 3 team in the country barely scraping past an FCS program — even a very good one like Idaho? The Ducks have work to do. The bandwagon has open seats for the first time in a good long while. Will anything short of a blowout of Boise State allay concerns that the Ducks are in trouble? On this week's episode of the Oregonian Sports Podcast, columnist Bill Oram and Brenna Greene of KOIN discuss what's at stake for Oregon in Week 2. Also discussed on this week's show: • Brenna explains her vote in the AP Top 25 and Bill makes the case the Ducks could have fallen even further • Does Oregon have egg on its face after its marketing campaign talked such a big game before the season? • Why Dan Lanning's postgame speech likely resonates with his players • Oregon State's win did the trick, but didn't teach us anything • DJ Uiagalelei's start at Florida State might have him missing Corvallis ... and much more. In the last two years, schools like Auburn, Texas A&M and Alabama have all reportedly tried to hire Oregon's Dan Lanning. He has insisted he won't leave the Ducks for any job. But that's unlikely to stop suitors from trying. So, with the Ducks a popular pick to win a college football championship in their first year in the Big Ten, who could come calling this year? On this week's episode of the Oregonian Sports Podcast, hosts Bill Oram and Brenna Greene from KOIN get into that, while also predicting win totals for both Oregon and Oregon State. The crew also fills in the blanks on some key questions for both programs, including: • Oregon State will beat _______. • Oregon will lose to _______. • Ducks fans with Xfinity will be able to watch live programming on Big Ten Network _______. I took my duty seriously and as the landscape passed out the windshield, I noticed a car's occupants as we passed them. The occupants all wore white sheets, not even their eyes or mouth exposed. To say it was odd is quite the understatement. It was downright chilling. As I told my friend about what I'd seen, we looked out at the road ahead with even more vigilant eyes and witnessed a bright object vault across the starry sky. And then I turned around to track the van with the strange occupants and it was gone. I'd forgotten about the incident, marked it down to both of us being exhausted. Local governments and nonprofits in the Portland area spent more than half a billion dollars fighting homelessness last year, a 70% increase from the year before, according to a new report. "The number itself was shocking," John Tapogna, a senior policy advisor at ECOnorthwest, which crunched the numbers, told KOIN 6 News. Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties, which make up Oregon's Portland metro area, spent $531 million on homelessness interventions in fiscal year 2023, according to ECOnorthwest's analysis. The huge increase was driven in part by nearly $90 million in federal pandemic relief funds, as well as a regional homeless tax approved by voters in 2020, the report shows. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message

Rob has lots of Portland stories to tell, and also stores of raising two young kids with Lisa after tragedy struck a few years ago. So, we talk about that and hear what a remarkable and wonderful couple Rob and Lisa are. She joins us to talk about March Madness, including some in the women’s Sweet 16 and Elite 8 rounds that will be held in Portland next weekend.
In the early months of 2023, six women turned up dead in and around Portland, Oregon, sparking rumors of a serial killer. Though police originally claimed they did not believe that the cases were connected, similarities emerged between four of the women, and one man linked them all. To the dismay of the public, not only did this suspect have multiple other crimes under his belt, but he had been granted early release from prison for fighting forest fires on the west coast. These are the stories of Kristin Smith, Charity Perry, Bridget Webster, Joanna Speaks, Ashley Real, and an unidentified Native woman. It's also the story of Jesse Lee Calhoun. Sources: 1.
