In the wake of the tragic Uvalde school shooting in 2022, Texas communities are still reeling. The wounds of the past were freshened when news emerged of a potential subsequent threat. Nathan Cruz, a 17-year-old relative of the previous gunman, Salvador Ramos, was apprehended on charges of planning a similarly heinous act.   The heartbreaking event from last year witnessed the loss of 21 innocent lives at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. Salvador Ramos, the perpetrator of the attack, had used an AR-15-style weapon to fatally injure 19 students and two dedicated educators on May 24, 2022. The community, and indeed the nation, mourned this senseless act of violence, remembering the victims with flowers, candles, and a memorial erected outside the school.   Fast-forward to the present day, and the shadow of the tragedy still lingers. Recent reports indicate that Nathan Cruz, Ramos' own cousin, harbored intentions of mirroring his relative's atrocious crime. The evidence against Cruz, obtained by WOAI, includes a chilling confession to his sister, where he expressed the desire to "do the same thing" as Ramos. Concerned about her brother's intentions, she confided in their mother, who later overheard Cruz attempting to illegally acquire an AR-15, the same style of weapon used in the Uvalde massacre.   In an era where vigilance is paramount, the quick action of Cruz's mother, who alerted the police about her son's alarming intentions, likely averted another catastrophe. Sgt. Washington Moscoso of the San Antonio Police Department expressed his relief to The New York Times, stating, “God knows what could have happened. Because she did the right thing, this individual has been arrested.” Adding to the community's unease is the revelation that Cruz resides directly opposite a San Antonio elementary school. KSAT brought to light the geographical proximity, deepening concerns over what might have been had his mother not intervened. In response to the emerging situation, Edgewood ISD released a statement highlighting its unwavering commitment to safety: "Edgewood ISD has been made aware a teenager is now in police custody accused of making a threat against a school on the city's west side. Edgewood ISD is dedicated to the safety and well-being of all students, faculty, and staff. Each campus benefits from an assigned Safety Officer. We encourage everyone to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activity. Our message remains clear: if you see something, say something."   Court documents reveal that Nathan Cruz is facing a felony charge for threatening a public place with terroristic intent. Additionally, he is charged with a misdemeanor for threats made against a family member.   The repercussions of the Uvalde tragedy emphasize the importance of community vigilance, open communication, and the need for preemptive action. It serves as a somber reminder that, while the act may end, the ripples continue to affect those connected to the perpetrator and the broader community. Efforts toward understanding, healing, and prevention are crucial in the wake of such events.   For comprehensive coverage on this and related stories, visit the original article at Star-Telegram. Wendell Barnhouse recalls the pressure of trying to find the right words in the immediate aftermath of the famous Duke-Kentucky basketball game. The overwhelming magnitude felt on press row at that 1992 NCAA tournament classic still lingers. That's one of many anecdotes Wendell shares in this episode from his three-plus decades as a national college basketball and football writer. Hear about traveling to 27 cities in one season, how Bob Knight made a telephone jump, why Bill Snyder made a call with a surprising reaction, and where Wendell had to write from as a Fiesta Bowl erupted with Boise State's trick plays. Wendell's tales from his 50 years in the business also include typewriters, an intimidating first Major League Baseball game, waging an old-fashioned newspaper war alongside legendary sports editor Dave Smith, and finding himself in a unique argument with the copy desk on deadline. Barnhouse was a media fixture on the national scene of college sports for more than 30 years, beginning in the mid-1980s. After three years as assistant sports editor at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Wendell became that newspaper's national college basketball writer during the 1985-86 season, which concluded with the Final Four being held in Dallas. He added national college football to his duties in 1994 and covered both beats – as well as writing a television-radio column – until his 25 years at the Star-Telegram ended in 2008 with the acceptance of a buyout. Wendell served as president of the United States Basketball Writers Association in 1995. He covered 26 Final Fours, 343 NCAA men's tournament games, two women's Final Fours, and 14 college football national championship games.   Wendell grew up in Columbia, Missouri, where his first journalism job was a summer part-time gig at the Columbia Daily Tribune in 1972. A year later, he was hired as the sports editor (one-person staff) at the Hannibal (Mo.) Courier-Post. Wendell spent four years as a sports reporter for the Quincy (Ill.) Herald-Whig beginning in 1974. He joined the sports copy desk at the Arizona Daily Star in 1979 for one year, then spent 18 months at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where he served as assistant sports editor. He moved to Texas in 1981 to edit sports copy and layout pages for the Dallas Morning News. That led to his job in 1983 at the Fort Worth-Star Telegram, where he eventually returned to writing. Wendell worked as a correspondent (writer, TV/video host) for the Big 12 Conference from 2008 until 2015. He then freelanced for seven years, including one season of covering college basketball for The Athletic, before retiring in 2022.   Follow him on Twitter: @WBBarnhouse Learn more about your ad choices. The deputy was identified by Indiana State Police as Tim DisPennett, a 19-year veteran of the county sheriff's department. DisPennett was instructing a popular vocational class on officer training, and was conducting a so-called “bad guy” drill when he fired his weapon, according to WTHI-TV. The high school senior was grazed by the bullet, and he was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The superintendent of the South Vermillion Community School Corp., Dave Chapman, said the student described the pain as a “sting,” WDRB reported. DisPennett has been placed on administrative leave for the length of an investigation into the matter, a state police spokesperson said. In a story published Monday titled “Gas Stations Become a Magnet for Violence in Philadelphia,” the author would have you hold your breath, suspend all disbelief and actually accept that mom-and-pop gas stations somehow play a role in the escalating gang violence sweeping the city, even though the author's own data does not support such a claim. According to the story, there were nine killings at Philadelphia gas stations during all of 2021 and 2022 – nine homicides in nearly two years. However, citywide over the same time period there were 1,021 murders – 562 during 2021 and 459 in 2022. To be clear, gas station murders made up less than one-percent of Philadelphia's total homicides. (Click Here for Full Article)
