Jon Wilner has been covering college sports for decades and is an AP top-25 football and basketball voter, as well as a Heisman Trophy voter. In addition to being a writer for the Mercury News, he hosts a podcast called Canzano and Wilner with Jonh Canzano. He also appears on various radio stations across the country, specifically KJR Radio in Seattle. He was named Beat Writer of the Year in 2013 by the Football Writers Association of America for his coverage of the Pac-12, won first place for feature writing in 2016 in the Associated Press Sports Editors writing contest, and is a five-time APSE honoree. In this episode, Wilner recaps the recent debut season of the 12-team College Football Playoff. He also talked about the revamped Big 10 and SEC and how they dominate the college landscape with strong media deals. He also speaks in detail about the rebuilding of the Pac-12, with Washington State and Oregon State as centerpieces. He discusses the move of Standford and California Universities to the ACC and debates the possibility of the ACC growing or shrinking significantly. Finally, he discusses a potential “super league” involving college football elite programs and the domino effect it would have on all of college athletics. There's about to be one less place for Animal-style fries in the East Bay. That's because In-N-Out Burger on Oakport Street in Oakland will close on March 24, In-N-Out Burger chief operating officer Denny Warnick let fans know over the weekend. A statement from the company provided to ABC7 indicates the company closed in part due to safety concerns. “We have made the decision to close our In-N-Out location in Oakland, California, due to ongoing issues with crime,” the statement reads in part. “Despite taking repeated steps to create safer conditions, our Customers and Associates are regularly victimized by car break-ins, property damage, theft, and armed robberies.” It's a challenging time for Oakland small businesses. The Mercury News reports the Oakland Police Department recorded a 23 percent increase in burglaries between 2022 and 2023. This In-N-Out location, the only one in Oakland, lasted 18 years and was a popular go-to after arriving at or departing from Oakland International Airport. But Warnick said customers and workers were under threat of danger too often. “We cannot ask them to visit or work in an unsafe environment,” he said. Workers at the location will receive severance pay or the option to work at another In-N-Out location.

The company made the announcement on Friday and said those affected will be 280 employees at a plant in East Moline, Illinois, and 230 employees at a factory in Davenport, Iowa, Fox Business reported Saturday. In March, Breitbart News reported that about 150 workers at the John Deere Des Moines Works in Ankeny, Iowa, were moving closer to being laid off in the months of April and May. “Earlier this month, Deere announced it is moving the manufacturing of skid steer loaders and compact track loaders from its Dubuque facility to Mexico by the end of 2026,” the report said. Both have deep-seated ties to Democratic politicians and businesses, NBC Bay Area reported.   Their business dealings and political connections are under intense scrutiny following evidence that suggests they orchestrated a complex scheme to circumvent campaign finance laws and funnel illegal donations to various Democratic candidates. The Mercury News reported:   Charlie Ngo, an alleged “straw donor” on behalf of the Duong family, made large deposits just before or after writing his checks for campaign contributions. Despite his bank account showing insufficient funds, he made significant donations to multiple candidates. According to the FPPC's filing, Ngo did not have enough money in his bank account to make the contributions he made. For example, he gave $700 to Friends of Desley Brooks even though he only had $49.58 in his bank account; $700 to re-elect Oakland Councilman Larry Reid in 2016 despite having only $2.14 to his name and donated $800 again to Brooks, the former Oakland councilwoman in 2018 despite having $5.32. Each time, “he made a large deposit just before or after writing his check,” city investigators said in court records. He is also listed in campaign documents as giving $700 to Oakland Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan in 2016, $700 to Oakland council candidate Viola Gonzales in 2016, $600 to San Jose Councilmember Tam Nguyen in 2017, and $250 to the campaign of Milpitas Councilmember Anthony Phan in 2016. In March of 2009, a California girl headed out of her house to play with friends in her neighborhood, and was captured on surveillance footage skipping down the street. When she failed to return home for dinner, her family reported her missing. As the days ticked by with no sign of her, the FBI created a profile of their suspect. But this profile would prove to be completely incorrect, and the real suspect would stun the police, the community, and anyone who was following the case. This is the story of Sandra Cantu. It's been nearly four months since former Arizona State University Athletic Director Ray Anderson stepped down from his role with the university. There has seemingly been very little progress in finding his replacement. ASU president Michael Crow recently said in an email to The Mercury News' Jon Wilner, "We are making some design changes and updating our models for operations and systems before we make a decision on a new AD, so it is for us a careful and deliberate process." As we hopefully look to narrow down the search sooner rather than later, with Arizona State University athletics leaving the PAC-12 Conference and joining the Big 12 Conference after the academic year, host Richie Bradshaw outlines what we want from the next AD for Arizona State University Sun Devils athletics, including a passion for the programs and the University itself, a willingness to improve the fan experience, and more on this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Amazon Fire TV Fire TV recently created Fire TV Channels to deliver a constant supply of the latest videos from your favorite sports brands, all for free. Stubborn, determined and tenancious, Gary Webb was the quintessential investigative journalist. In his work for a newspaper called The Mercury News, Gary explored the relationship between right-wing revolutionary Contras in Nicaragua, the crack cocaine epidemic in the United States, and the actions of the Central Intelligence Agency. While the series was published, multiple mainstream newspapers joined together to write editorials criticizing him, and ultimately his own editors turned on him, as well. Gary Webb later died from two gunshots to the head. In-N-Out Burger To Close Only Location In Oakland Due To Crime

Real News Now Podcast

In a recent update, In-N-Out Burger, a popular fast food chain, disclosed its decision to shutter its only outlet in Oakland, California, citing increasing criminal activities posing a risk to its employees and patrons. The alarming crime rates in the local neighborhood are said to be the driving force behind this strategic decision. As reported by The Mercury News, data from the Oakland Police Department reveals an unsettling 38% uptick in robberies and a 23% rise in burglaries from 2022 to 2023. The troubled eatery resides just a short distance from Oakland International Airport, meaning the proximity to a key transport hub has not deterred criminal activities. Denny Warnick, the Chief Operating Officer, made the concerning announcement, saying that despite numerous attempts to improve the safety situation, the location continues to face crime-related problems such as vehicle break-ins, property damage, theft, and even armed robberies. In fact, the circumstances had severely deteriorated to the point where security guards, in a comment to a local publication, disclosed they filed more theft reports originating at this In-N-Out Burger location than any other property they oversee. These security officers indicated that they witnessed approximately five burglaries at the venue on a 'regular' basis. The establishment will cease operations officially from Sunday, March 24, 2024. It represents a significant blow to the local community that has supported the location for over 18 years. Warnick expressed gratitude towards the supportive community, acknowledging the negative consequences this closure would have on the store's associates and their families. Stressing the business' ethical obligations towards its associates and customers, Wranick stated, 'Our top priority must be the safety and well-being of our customers and associates – continuing activities in an unsafe environment is something we cannot ask them to partake in. Although this location was indeed a profitable one for us, revenue cannot and must not take precedence over safety.' While the closure undoubtedly results in job disruption for the restaurant's employees, In-N-Out Burger has made provisions to reassign them to a nearby location of the brand. Alternatively, the associates are offered a severance deal to help them navigate this challenging period. Throughout its presence in Oakland, In-N-Out Burger has been a staunch supporter of the local community, with a track record of philanthropic initiatives dating back to even before the opening of the now-closing location. However, with the imminent closure, the burger chain will cease to carry out business activities in the area. The company affirmed its continued dedication to Oakland, outlining that although direct business operations will halt, In-N-Out Burger Foundation's charitable activities in the locale will persist. Its Slave 2 Nothing Foundation will also continue its mission in the region, ensuring the brand's goodwill and commitment to the community continues unhindered. Despite the somber news of the closure, Warnick gave reassurances that the company remains committed to its patrons and employees. Their well-being will always be a central focus, and this closure is seen as a necessary step to uphold this promise. Oakland's rising crime statistics undoubtedly played a significant part in this strategic business decision. As a responsible entity, In-N-Out Burger took the decision factoring in not just business performance parameters, but also concerns over staff and customers' safety. The fast food chain's withdraw from Oakland speaks volumes about the security concerns businesses confront in the city. This move also underscores the need for more assertive crime prevention measures to ensure businesses can function and thrive in safe environments. The closure, while a step back for In-N-Out Burger, is expected to be a wake-up call for the local administration. The issues of law and order disrupting business operations underscore the criticality of a swift and impactful response from the local law enforcement agencies. Despite the challenges brought on by the closure, In-N-Out Burger has demonstrated well-balanced crisis management. The company's attention to employees through job relocation opportunities and severance packages reflects not only its responsibility as an employer but also its humane approach in difficult times. The situation paints a realistic picture of the challenges businesses face in struggling neighborhoods. The inability to assure adequate safety measures for employees and customers can lead to such difficult decisions like the one In-N-Out Burger had to take. Although set back by the situation in Oakland, In-N-Out Burger still holds on to its commitment to the community. This exemplifies the company's dedication and resilience, carrying its purpose forward through charity work even as its business operations are compelled to withdraw. Lydia, "Dia," Abrams marries wealthy La Jolla, California, real estate developer. Clem Abrams. They have two children. After more than 30 years of marriage, Clem Abrams passes away after a long illness and Dia steps up to run the 116 acre family ranch.  After years as a widow,  Abrams meets Keith Harper on a dating website. According to the Mercury News, Harper is a retired parole agent for the Utah Department of Corrections.  The two hit it off and six months later, Harper moves in with Dia at the ranch and becomes the ranch manager.   According to Harper, he works to upgrade the Abrams' property:  building dams, bridges, fences and helping care for Abrams' animals. Harper also claims to be Abrams' fiance. Keith Harper is also named as trustee of Abrams' estate, and her beneficiary in the event of her death. On June 6, 2020, Dia Abrams is seen at her ranch in Mountain Center, California. Then she is captured on doorbell-cam footage delivering cinnamon rolls to a neighbor undergoing cancer treatment. According to Keith Harper, he and Dia have lunch around 2:30 pm before he leaves to work around the property.  Abrams reportedly goes to tend to her horses at another property she owns in Garner Valley. Harper says he mows for five hours before returning to the house around 7:30 p.m.   Abrams' Ford F-350 pickup is parked outside, but Harper cannot find her.  Harper says he calls her phone and hears it ringing upstairs. It is plugged into a charger next to a nightstand. Abrams' purse and keys are also there. A search begins.  Dozens of locals scoured the ranch and surrounding mountain area on foot, horseback and all-terrain vehicles. Harper is seen riding an ATV around the property. When Riverside County sheriff deputies begin a days-long search, Harper packs up his RV and takes off for Arizona. He says he needs to take care of a tax issue at a property he owns there.  Where is Dia?  Joining Nancy Grace Today: Brenda Geiger, J.D. -  Managing Attorney of Geiger Law Office, P.C., a Trusts & Estates Law firm, Author: “Secrets of Great Estate Planning, Fourth Edition” and “Estate Planning Secrets of the Affluent, Third Edition” www.geigerlawoffice.com, FB: Geiger Law Office, P.C., IG: geigerlawoffice   Dr. Bethany Marshall - Psychoanalyst www.drbethanymarshall.com/, Instagram & TikTok: drbethanymarshall, Twitter: @DrBethanyLive, appearing in the new show “Paris in Love” on Peacock   Dan Goldsmith -  Private Investigator & Owner of Goldsmith Investigations, Fmr.
