We're going to talk about the Great Smoky Mountains today, with Don Robinson sharing his love of the park, and his recent induction into the 900 Miler Club, having hiked all the trails in the Smokies. It's a pretty exclusive club, with fewer than a thousand members, yet the logistics required to get this done would fry my brain! Don has provided me with links to the two books he suggests, should you wish to follow in his footsteps. Day Hiker's Guide to All the Trails in The Smoky Mountains and Hiking Trails of the Smokies. You can learn more about the Smokies and the club, by visiting their website at Smoky Mountains Hiking Club - 900 Miler Club After Don, we had a second visit from the lovely Sally Brooks, who has produced the book about her own thru-hike two decades ago. Sally is a stand-up comedian, laughs easily, and is sure to have included her humor in the book. It is called “Going to Maine.” You can find it on her website at www.sallychaffinbrooks.com, or on Amazon at Going to Maine: All the Ways to Fall on the Appalachian Trail. Here she is with her friend Erin, on Katahdin 20 years ago, and this year. Our new book reading, Happy Hiking, by my friend, Emily Leonard is–of course–written from a woman's POV and a woman's voice. I hope you enjoy listening to my reading of it. If you'd like to buy the book, you can find it on Amazon at Happy Hiking: Falling in love on the Appalachian Trail, or on Emily's website, at Happy Hiking. I used my recent hike in the UK on the South West Coast Path to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. You can learn more about the hike and the organization–and donate–by visiting Hike with Steve - Empowering Parents, One Step at a Time | Parenting Matters %. Our entire series of videos from our Woods Hole Weekend in 2022 is now FREE and available at my YouTube page at Woods Hole Weekend - Trailer There, you'll find all sorts of tips and tricks that our guests took away from the weekend that helped them with their own hikes this year. Women face various dangers while jogging on trails, stemming from safety concerns that can arise due to their vulnerability and societal factors. These dangers include the risk of harassment, assault, abduction, and injury. The secluded nature of many trails, lack of proper lighting, and limited access to help can exacerbate these risks. Women often feel a need to be hyper-vigilant, altering their behavior and routines to mitigate these dangers. However, it's important to note that not all trails and locations pose the same level of risk, and many women continue to enjoy jogging safely by taking precautions and advocating for improved safety measures.Statistics: Statistics on the dangers women face while jogging on trails can vary depending on location and data availability. However, some general trends and figures highlight the risks:Harassment and Assault:According to a 2016 survey by Runner's World, 43% of women have experienced harassment during a run.A survey conducted by Stop Street Harassment in 2014 found that 65% of women had experienced street harassment, which can extend to trails as well.Abduction and Violence:Exact statistics on abduction specifically on trails are harder to come by. However, cases of women being abducted while jogging in public areas have been reported. The threat of violence, including physical assault, remains a concern for women joggers on trails.Injury and Accidents:Injuries can result from falls, uneven terrain, or lack of proper lighting on trails.A study published in the "Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness" in 2020 reported that female runners are more prone to certain injuries compared to their male counterparts.Safety Measures:Many women take precautions, such as running during daylight hours, informing someone about their route, and avoiding secluded trails. Some choose to run with a partner, carry personal safety devices, or take self-defense classes.Advancements in technology, such as GPS trackers and safety apps, have provided additional security options.Advocacy and Awareness:Women's advocacy groups and organizations have been pushing for increased safety measures on trails and in public spaces.Social media campaigns and awareness initiatives encourage dialogue about the issue and promote collective actionIn this episode we take a look at some of the other high profile murder cases that involve women jogging on trails. ICYMI: The Dangers Facing Women On Hiking Trails Around America

Beyond The Horizon

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 11, 2024 14:04

There are still no suspects in the murder of Rachel Morin. Israel has one of the most extensive and highly developed hiking trail systems of any country in the world. Millions of hikers use the trails every year during holiday breaks, on mandatory school trips, and for recreational hikes.  Shay Rabineau's Walking the Land: A History of Israeli Hiking Trails (Indiana UP, 2023) offers the first scholarly exploration of this unique trail system. Featuring more than ten thousand kilometers of trails, marked with hundreds of thousands of colored blazes, the trail system crisscrosses Israeli-controlled territory, from the country's farthest borders to its densest metropolitan areas. The thousand-kilometer Israel National Trail crosses the country from north to south. Hiking, trails, and the ubiquitous three-striped trail blazes appear everywhere in Israeli popular culture; they are the subjects of news articles, radio programs, television shows, best-selling novels, government debates, and even national security speeches. Yet the trail system is almost completely unknown to the millions of foreign tourists who visit every year and has been largely unstudied by scholars of Israel. Walking the Land explores the many ways that Israel's hiking trails are significant to its history, national identity, and conservation efforts. Christopher P. Davey is Visiting Assistant Professor at Clark University's Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies. Learn more about your ad choices.
