Tonight's special guest is Penelope Benis from Bellevue, Washington, a returning NAASCA family member and a survivor of childhood domestic violence and sexual abuse. Born into multi-generational abuse, she endured extreme and multiple forms of maltreatment. The abuse was physical, mental, emotional and sexual in nature. As a survival technique in her childhood, Penelope completely dissociated the abuse via depersonalization. Her primary care doctor took notice and gently urged her to seek trauma-informed therapy. Five years ago her healing process began through intensive cognitive therapy and other modalities (such as hiking, yoga and meditation), which enabled her to begin the process of healing. Penelope considers herself to now be in recovery, which she defines as a lifelong process. Living in Bellevue, WA, with her husband and three sons, she works as an instructor at Bellevue College, holds a license as a Certified Ace Health Coach and is an avid activist in the prevention of child abuse. Penelope, a Certified Yoga Instructor (RYS200), has been Trauma Informed Trained in Yoga through Yoga Behind Bars in Seattle, WA. Penelope has published “Healing from Abuse; How Outdoor Exercise Can Energize and Awaken Our Minds, Lift Our Spirits, Enhance Our Cognitive Performance, and Help Alleviate Depression,” which can be found on the NAASCA website. Penelope, a member of NAASCA, serves on NAASCA's Board, holds the title of NAASCA's Washington State Ambassador, and hosts the Monday and Wednesday editions of NAASCA's “Stop Child Abuse Now” talk radio show.

Tonight's special guest is Debra Hunt from Glendale, Arizona, a NAASCA family member and volunteer. Among other things, Debra is now one of our HOSTS on our "Stop Child Abuse Now" talk radio shows. She began life in Fontana, California, in a childhood home marked by mental and emotional trauma. Yes, she was given opportunities participate in normal childhood activities like choir, dance, and cheer-leading .. to look like a shining star. But meanwhile Debra experienced a home-life filled with ridicule, hatefulness, belittling, and silence .. deafening silence. There was extreme physical and mental abuse. Invisible but enduring scars of childhood trauma laid the path for adolescence. Feeling alone, scared and unloved, she embarked upon her teen years in true rebellious style. She began sneaking off. Debra began seeking attention and validation through drug and alcohol use, and risky sexual encounters. She was molested and raped as a teen, and later, in young adulthood, she endured Domestic Violence and more victimization. After graduation she got married and had a child. When her husband left her homeless with a baby, Debra picked up her life and moved on. In 1994 she met the second man she would wed. After the first seven years she noticed an abusive pattern in her life. She'd brought childhood feelings of emptiness and worthlessness into adulthood. Debra had learned that to 'feel safe' she had to shut up and take it. However bad things seemed, she believed the alternatives, real or imagined, would be worse. Debra realized these thoughts, this seeming truths, were the result of trauma from an abusive childhood. But things are improving now. Currently, after a 23 year marriage, Debra's survived a divorce. She's determined to heal, and is documenting her journey in a book she's writing, “I Am Hunt.”

Tonight's special guest is Steve McNally from New Jersey, a returning NAASCA family member who says he's eager to be back because, ".. so much has happened in the 18 months since the first time around .. repressed memories coming back, relationship stuff around trauma/abuse recovery etc." Steve is a frequent contributor to "Stop Child Abuse Now" talk radio shows. He's a survivor of childhood physical abuse, neglect, and emotional / mental abuse. "I am 54 years old, yet rarely "feel" like it," he says. Steve grew up in a household that was overshadowed by his young mother's alcoholism and depression. His father beat them. He had two natural siblings, an older brother and a younger sister, as well as a 'twin' sister, a Vietnamese girl his parents adopted when he was 9 months old. The family moved a lot and his mother drank often. There were suicide attempts. "The feelings I had during that time was of being lost," he says. When Steve was 10 his mother sobered up, and came to realize she was a lesbian. She soon got into a relationship with a woman who became like a second mom to him. Steve's father moved out of the house and within a year had his kids living with them. When Steve was 13 his brother's schoolmate friend sexually abused him, adding to his trauma. "I felt forced to keep to myself for most of my life. It led to my abusing drugs and alcohol for years. The shame and guilt undermined attempts at dating." Steve notes that he's clean and sober 3½ years now, has finished two college degrees and is in a new chapter in his life "by unveiling the hurt and pain and anger and shame. And by creating a 'family of choice,' online in NAASCA, in peer to peer support groups and in person." We're glad he has!

Tonight's special guest is Tammy Shoffstall from Pompano Beach, Florida, a returning NAASCA family member and one of our most dedicated volunteers. Tammy serves as the Treasurer of NAASCA's 501(c)3 non profit organization and hosts many of the "Stop Child Abuse Now" talk radio shows. She also helps administrate the Facebook groups. A survivor of child abuse, Tammy will re-tell her story to refresh the memory of her fellow NAASCA family members about the traumas of her youth. Tammy was the second child in an abusive marriage between a teenage mother and a soldier father who died when she was a toddler. Her mom went back home to live with her grandparents. "I was a burden to my grandmother and she often stated that this world would be better off if I had never been born," Tammy says. In this home she was physically, verbally, and emotionally abused by her maternal grandmother. "As a child and to this day, I struggle to understand why my grandmother chose to abuse me." When she was eight her mother re-married, but one night her stepfather said he was going to teach her 'about life.' Tammy reports, "I turned to stone." The same step father went on to groom and sexually abused her sister for years. Tammy's marriage was very abusive, too. She says, "My husband raped me several times." She divorced him in her early 30's and went back to school. She's currently working on a doctorate. Tammy considers her healing journey a work in progress. "I learned to stop looking for someone to love me. I made it a personal quest to find people to love and eventually people will love me back." She concludes, "One can linger in victim mode forever, but transitioning to survivor will allow healing to occur."

Tonight's special guest is Bill Murray from Los Angeles, California, a childhood sexual abuse survivor and NAASCA's founder. He first spoke on the radio on SCAN Episode 63 in 2009. By then he was nearly 25 years in recovery, and had told his story many many times, one-on-one, in small groups and even at a few conventions. A bit later he launched the NAASCA.org web site and organization, which recently became a non-profit charity. Bill was sexually abused from age 11 until about half way through his high school experience at a minor seminary. He was also the victim of thousands of x-rated pre-pubescent pictures, kidnapped for two weeks and offered to others, trafficked. Most of his predators, all men, were priests and brothers in the Catholic Church. Bill had a confusing, painful adolescence and early adulthood where he kept his secret, drinking and drugging in shame. He had numerous inappropriate sexual relationships with as many women as he could. At 30 years old, Bill sobered up and began to apply the same principals he was learning in a 12 Step program to the suffering he'd experienced in his youth. Now there are a number of NAASCA 'family members' who are trained to host the 6-night-a-week "Stop Child Abuse Now" talk radio shows. After hosting some 2200 episodes himself, Bill remains NAASCA's principal spokesperson and devotes his time to writing and appearing as often as he can to educate the public and offer hope to the still-suffering adult survivor of child abuse and trauma.

SPECIAL TOPIC Night - "For Our Kids" - Deborah Maddison and Eugenea Couture, Canadian activists from British Columbia, will join Bill Murray to lead this evening's discussion about the Rights of Children and Families in North America. ~~ TONIGHT'S TOPIC: The Judicial System, Family Courts, Parental Alienation, Law Enforcement, Child Protection Services, Foster Care, Adoption .. the list goes on and on .. all possible topics in this excellent every-other-week 'For Our Kids' series of "Stop Child Abuse Now" talk radio shows on Thursday evenings. Deborah and Gina always have topical 'special guests' who speak to the specific issue that night, and the series has quite a following. It's astonishing how many people face problems like this, and in every instance there are children suffering (at a bare minimum) emotional trauma and in addition (quite often) other abuses that many will bring into their adulthood. In fact it would be impossible to tell which North American state or province was being discussed at any one time if it wasn't announced. To some degree these issues are faced everywhere. ~~ Every two weeks a new THEME will be presented in this series, with frequent special guests speaking from their own experience. ~~ Please see our web page at: www.NAASCA.org/ForOurKids or write to: naasca.forourkids@gmail.com.

Tonight's special guest is Mike H from Alabama, a child abuse survivor who's making his first "special guest" appearance with us. Mike's a fan of the "Stop Child Abuse Now" show and tells us it's helped him a great deal to listen and learn from our previous episodes. Now he joins us, hoping he can help others. This is the first time he will be telling his story. Mike's abuse began when he was a very young child. He played the "scapegoat" role in his family, and the experience extended all the way into his 30s. There were many struggles along the way. "I would run away and end up in foster care," he writes. But each time he did he'd eventually end up back home where he'd get even more abuse. Mike is in the process of writing his story in the form of an autobiographical book, which he shares has helped him in coming to understand himself. He hopes publishing it might help other adult victims / survivors of child abuse find recovery. Mike's upbeat and optimistic about continuing his own journey, but also approaches healing with his eyes open. He knows it'll not be easy. Mike credits his wonderful wife with being his rock, and his children for being his inspiration.

Tonight's special guest is Jeanette Allison from Monterey, CA, who suffered neglect and emotional abuse at the hands of her mother, a raging and mean alcoholic with Bipolar disorder, a sadistic and narcissistic personality who suffered from a schizoaffective disorder with paranoia. Jeanette's father was the enabler in the family. He worked three jobs to support the family of four. Her mother targeted her specifically, not her more compliant brother. Until recently Jeanette was a single mother and an LGBT activist. She had problems with alcohol in the past and successfully broke free of those problems through the help of AA's 12 Step program which she still practices on a daily basis, targeting the spiritual malady that lead her to drink in the first place. Although AA has been the solution to her alcoholism, she found no relief for trauma she suffered and carried with her from childhood. This is changing now as Jeanette found an answer to addressing unhealed maladies when she learned of Rivka Edery's book "Trauma and Transformation: A 12 Step Guide" and NAASCA's every other Thursday night "Stop Child Abuse Now" radio talk series that's devoted to the application of a 12 Step Program and approach to recovery the trauma of childhood abuse. Jeanette continues to be a shining light, despite suffering from a traumatic work accident, and a rare hand tumor that have halted her dream job as an occupational therapist. As such has a special interest in individuals with disabilities. He'll also speak to a number of the young men, ages 18 to 35, who form the core group that is served by the non-profit www.PLunaFoundation.com. Donations are being accepted to help with the cost of providing Internet-based counseling, where therapists and clients connect over SKYPE. Info about the sold out event can be found at: www.Help4Guys.org. Following our broadcast, Bill Murray, himself a long-time adult survivor of child abuse and founder of the National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse (www.NAASCA.org), has been asked to appear as the main Keynote speaker for the Male Abuse Awareness Week fundraiser. We're delighted to accomodate, and look forward to more ON LOCATION broadcasts in the future.

Most abuse victims (men and women) hide the story of their experience well into adulthood. But that's often how recovery begins, one survivor talking to another. Anonymous calls and chat room participation are encouraged. But we hope those who have recovered will join Bill and co-host Jessica Stevens, both adult survivors of child abuse, for an informed discussion of the many important issues that surround child abuse. ~~ Please see www.NAASCA.org ~~ "Very few adults have escaped many years at the hands of pedophiles, trafficking attempts, being the subject of thousands of X-rated kiddie photos and even a kidnapping. But I have," says Bill. "More importantly, I've been in recovery from its painful, devastating effects for over 25 years, and I've decided to devote my remaining time, money and available energy to this vitally important cause. I wish to be a voice for Adult Survivors of Child Abuse, especially to those who need to be helped into real recovery, where we can have healthy, meaningful lives and relationships. All of us need to do whatever we can to Stop Child Abuse Now !!" ~~ PS: please join our new Facebook "cause" and invite others to join, too: http://www.causes.com/causes/580142-stop-child-abuse-now
