Welcome to another episode of Thriving Parenting! Today, we're diving into a critical yet often overlooked challenge in parenting—stress and how it affects your ability to truly connect and attune to your baby's needs.Parenting is overwhelming, and stress is inevitable. But what happens when stress takes over? It clouds our judgment, pushes us into survival mode, and makes it nearly impossible to attune to the subtle cues our baby gives us. In this episode, we unpack:What attunement really means and why it's the key to understanding your baby beyond their basic needsHow stress literally rewires your brain, shutting down logical thinking and problem-solvingThe hidden sources of parenting stress—from sleep deprivation and emotional overload to the mental load of managing a householdHow to break the stress cycle, regulate your emotions, and create an environment where both you and your baby thriveThe truth? You know your baby best—but only when you have the capacity to tune in. And that starts with reducing stress, tuning into your own needs, and trusting yourself. If you've been feeling overwhelmed, constantly second-guessing your parenting, or simply running on empty, this episode is for you.Want more support? Welcome back, Thrivers! In this episode, we're tackling a topic that so many parents struggle with—perfectionism in parenting. If you've ever felt like you're failing because things didn't go as planned, this one's for you.I get it. I've been there. Whether it's worrying about sleep routines, questioning if we've “ruined” everything by comforting our child a certain way, or feeling like we need to get it all right, perfectionism sneaks up on us in ways we don't even realise. But the truth is, parenting isn't meant to be perfect—it's meant to be human. In this episode, I dive into:How perfectionism shows up in parenting (and why we don't even realise it).The hidden pressure we put on ourselves to control the uncontrollable. Why comparison (especially with other parents) fuels our self-doubt.How to shift from control to connection and let go of the guilt.Practical ways to pause, reset, and remind ourselves that we are enough.Parenting is messy. It's unpredictable. And that's okay. If you've ever felt like you're falling short, this episode is your reminder that you are doing better than you think. If this resonates with you, share this episode with a fellow parent who needs to hear it! Are you confused about which fats are healthy vs. unhealthy and which fats are good choices for your thyroid-friendly cooking purposes? In this episode of Thyroid-Healthy Bites, we're breaking it all down—why fats are essential for hormone balance, brain function, and inflammation control, plus which ones to choose (and which to avoid). As a former fat-phobic ‘80s kid turned Cordon Bleu chef, I'll bust common myths about saturated fats and olive oil, clear up confusion about cooking oils, and help you make smart, thyroid-friendly choices with confidence.
Welcome to the 50th episode of Thriving Parenting! First off, a huge thank you for being part of this journey. Releasing this podcast was once a fear, but now, it's something I look forward to every week—connecting, supporting, and helping you embrace a thriving life in parenting. To celebrate this milestone, I have a FREE masterclass for you! It's all about understanding and responding to your baby's cries, helping you become their emotional coach during sleep changes. Visit my new website, https://sleepthrivegrow.com.Crying. It's something all parents struggle with, and yet, society has conditioned us to fear it. We're told a “good” baby is a quiet baby, and when our little one cries, we start questioning everything: Am I doing it wrong? Am I breaking trust? Should I stop this immediately? But what if we rewrote this story? Instead of seeing crying as a problem, what if we recognized it as a form of communication—not something to fix, but something to support?Today, we're unpacking:Why society has trained us to fear cryingHow crying is essential for emotional developmentThe shift from “stop the crying” to “support the feeling”Why embracing emotions at bedtime can actually make sleep easierHow to attune to your baby's needs without feeling overwhelmedWhen we learn to hold space for our baby's emotions without panic, everything changes. Parenting becomes less about “fixing” and more about guiding, supporting, and responding with confidence.
Welcome back, Thrivers, to another episode of Thriving Parenting! Today, we're diving into something that can truly transform your stress levels, mental well-being, and overall day-to-day experience as a parent—small, meaningful rituals.Life is busier than ever, and as parents, we're often juggling a million things at once. But what if I told you that incorporating simple, intentional pauses throughout your day could make all the difference? These moments won't take up much of your time, but they have the power to ground you, reset your nervous system, and bring a sense of calm amidst the chaos. From morning gratitude practices to bedtime rituals with our children, I discuss practical ways to integrate these small yet powerful pauses into your daily routine. You'll learn how simple moments—like a deep breath before getting out of bed, noticing nature on a morning walk, or sharing a meaningful bedtime gesture with your child—can significantly shift your energy and improve your connection with your family. What You'll Learn in This Episode:The importance of small rituals in reducing stress and fostering mindfulnessHow rituals provide structure, emotional security, and a sense of controlPractical, easy-to-implement ideas for morning, daytime, and bedtime ritualsThe science behind how these pauses activate our parasympathetic nervous systemHow to create meaningful connection points with your children through simple gesturesIf this episode resonated with you, please share it with a fellow parent who might be running on stress and cortisol. Welcome back, Thrivers! Today, we're diving into one of the most powerful tools in parenting—understanding temperament. Temperament is the foundation of who we are, shaping how our children experience and react to the world. And the more we understand it, the better we can support them in ways that truly meet their needs. In this episode, I break down the nine temperament traits identified by researchers Thomas and Chess, including adaptability, persistence, sensitivity, and intensity of reaction. I'll also share real-life stories from clients and my own parenting journey to illustrate how temperament influences everything from transitions to sleep.Plus, we'll explore how your own temperament as a parent affects the way you interact with your child—because parenting is a two-way street! Whether you're raising an easygoing dandelion, a sensitive orchid, or a slow-to-warm tulip, this episode will help you navigate the unique needs of your child without limiting their potential.I talked about:What is temperament and why does it matter? The 9 key temperament traits and how they show up in daily lifeHow to work with your child's temperament instead of against itWhy understanding your own temperament is just as importantPractical strategies to nurture your child's growth without boxing them inTune in, take notes, and get curious about your child's temperament. Hello, Thrivers! In today's episode of Thriving Parenting, I'm diving into a powerful reminder: you can do hard things. As parents, we often hesitate when facing challenges, but just like learning to drive, every difficult moment is an opportunity to grow.I revisit a key topic from episode 41—giving ourselves permission to struggle—and explore new insights on resilience, self-trust, and the science behind doing hard things. I share two inspiring client stories, real-life examples of parents navigating sleep struggles with their babies, and how small, intentional steps made a big difference. We talk about:The role of neuroplasticity in parenting challengesHow small, manageable steps lead to lasting changeThe importance of self-compassion and mindset shiftsBreathing techniques to regulate emotions in tough momentsWhy perfection isn't the goal—connection, growth, and trust areParenting isn't about getting everything right. It's about showing up, learning, and evolving. If you're feeling stuck in patterns that aren't serving you, remember—you have the power to shift, no matter how small. If this episode resonated with you, I'd love for you to share it or leave a review. Let's continue to grow and thrive together.
Have you ever wondered why your child seems fearful of things you know are perfectly safe or why they resist certain situations that feel normal to you? In today's episode, we dive deep into the fascinating difference between perspective and perception.I promise, this episode is going to be incredibly enlightening and powerful for your parenting journey. While I'm no psychologist, I'll be breaking this down in the simplest way possible—because that's how I learn too! As a mind-body practitioner, I geek out over psychology and love understanding how our brains work. But don't worry, you don't need a degree to follow along—just an open mind and a willingness to see things from your child's perspective. What You'll Learn in This Episode:The fundamental difference between perspective (how adults see the world) and perception (how children experience it).Why young children rely solely on their senses and emotions to interpret the world. How experiences shape their perceptions of safety and trust. Why some children struggle with sleep in a cot and how we can gently shift their perception of safety. How your own perceptions of sleep and independence influence your child's experience. The role of consistency, regulation, and positive messaging in helping your child feel safe and secure."Children see magic because they look for it. Adults see magic because they've learned where it's hidden."We have the privilege of showing our children where safety, comfort, and trust are hidden. It's in our words, our calm presence, and the consistency of our love that we help shape their world. If you loved this episode, please leave a review or reach out—I'd love to hear from you! Welcome to another episode of Thriving Parenting! Today, I'm delving into an important yet often avoided topic: Where are we avoiding discomfort in our parenting? How might this avoidance be hindering both our growth and that of our children? I cannot wait to explore this topic with you, as it's something I encounter often in my coaching and, admittedly, in my own parenting journey. In this episode, I share a personal story about a situation where I avoided discomfort for a while, only to face it head-on with transformative results. I'll provide a real-life example involving one of my children and discuss common areas where we, as parents, might try to sidestep discomfort. Together, we'll reflect on whether these avoidance patterns truly serve us—or if they prevent us and our children from thriving. We'll examine:How avoiding discomfort might stop us from achieving the thriving life we desire for ourselves and our children.Key areas where this avoidance often shows up in parenting, such as managing big emotions, setting boundaries, and allowing mistakes.Practical strategies for embracing discomfort as a necessary part of growth and connection.I also want to share a heartwarming testimonial from Andrea, a client who engaged with my Sleep Godmother program. She described her transformative experience in these words:"Within a few days, our 15-month-old went from waking up 3–8 times a night to sleeping through or waking only once. Jen's support was a game changer for our family."Andrea's story reminds me of how often discomfort arises during big changes. It's relevant to this episode because, in helping families, I often see that transformation begins when we confront discomfort with courage and empathy. Finally, I reflect on my recent parenting experience, where I helped my daughter transition away from thumb-sucking—a deeply ingrained habit. It required navigating her big emotions, setting firm but loving boundaries, and working through my own discomfort as a parent. The result? Watching her proudly declare, “Mum, I'm so proud of myself!”This episode is a reminder that discomfort and growth go hand-in-hand. Whether it's guiding our children through life's challenges or embracing our own vulnerabilities, leaning into discomfort fosters resilience, connection, and understanding.Thank you for tuning in! If this episode resonated with you, please take a moment to leave a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify—it truly helps this podcast reach more listeners. Don't forget to share it with someone who might benefit from this message.Until next time, Thrivers! There's a lot of pressure to ensure that we're helping kids have everything they need to become successful adults. But it's easy to overdo it and give them more help than they need, which prevents them from learning necessary life skills. Dr. Michele Borba, a psychologist and parenting expert, has researched what kids need to thrive in life. She has written a new book called Thrivers. It's no small task. And it creates a unique perspective that all impact-driven leaders can learn from. This episode of THRIVERS dives deep into how these leaders can transform their communities through courageous decision-making and strategic risk-taking. In their compelling conversation, Tucker and Sarah:Unpack how community foundations are uniquely equipped to effect substantial local changes, and why embracing this potential requires a shift towards risk and innovation.Discuss the necessity of making tough choices that may initially alienate some, yet ultimately attract the right supporters and stakeholders essential for long-term impact.Explore moving beyond traditional asset management to ensure that every decision contributes directly to the desired societal impact, rather than merely pleasing donors.Highlight methods to tap into the often-underutilized reservoir of knowledge and intuition within teams to drive forward-thinking decisions. This episode offers a look into a different perspective of leadership discourse, giving all of us the opportunity to learn from the specific realities faced by community foundation leaders.
