Tonight's special guest is Michael Broussard from Philadelphia, a returning NAASCA family member. As a child abuse survivor, Michael has come up with a unique way to be of service and carry our message. NAASCA has committed to presenting his play, a one-man show "Ask a Sex Abuse Survivor," to a wider and ever-expanding audience through our web site and on our talk shows.The East Coast leg of the National Tour begins in early September and currently includes stops in Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Vermont... with more stops being added every day. "Once we finish the East Coast leg, I'll come home to refresh and regroup, then I'll head out to do either the Midwest or West Coast leg of the tour," says Michael. "Eventually we will cover the entire nation." He goes on, "We are relying on donations to help us reach as many survivors as possible all around the country." During the play, which was first performed at the end of June, 2014, Michael tells the story of a childhood lost to abuse — and rediscovered decades later. Throughout the performance, audience members were encouraged to share their own experiences, ask questions and offer up comments. The play provides a unique opportunity for an open, interactive dialogue on the effects and causes of abuse and, as such, NAASCA will be devoted to helping the play be presented elsewhere. SPECIAL TOPIC Night - "For Our Kids" - Deborah Maddison and Tracy Baxter, Canadian activists from British Columbia, will join Bill Murray to lead this evening's discussion about the Rights of Children and Families in North America. The institution commonly known as "Child Protective Services" has operated in an almost untouchable position in North America for decades, as if it was "above the law". To speak out against CPS was to risk losing your children, your family, your career, and in some cases your freedom, as retaliation was quick and vicious. Thankfully, there has been a recent turn in public opinion due to media exposure, precedent-setting lawsuits, ground breaking documentaries and people refusing to be silenced. Slowly, the Courts are starting to hold CPS agencies responsible for their illegal actions and abuses." We'll speak to the producer and director of 'Hope Stripped Bare', Tom Sutherland and cameraman Linley Redford, whose documentary is about the CPS system in North America. We will also be speaking with attorney and advocate Nanine McCool, executive director of Bridge to Justice Foundation, who fought to expose injustice in Family Court. Tonight's special guest is Alicia Kozakiewicz, from Pittsburgh, PA, a returning NAASCA family member. Alicia was kidnapped in 2002 by a man she'd met on the Internet, taken to Virginia, tortured for four days and rescued by the FBI. She was 13 years old. Since then, Alicia and her family work towards preventative safety education and effective legislation so that no child will suffer as Alicia has. That's the mission of "The Alicia Project," the implementation of ALICIA'S LAW in all 50 states, to provide the funding to rescue all children from the hands of sadistic sexually exploiting Internet predators and to raise awareness and end predatory crimes against children. “The Alicia Project,” though rooted in tragedy, has become a voice for exploited and missing children. Along with her parents, Mary and Charles, she has educated children, families, teachers, law enforcement and governmental and social agencies, and has been honored to address numerous conferences, forums and summits, lending her personal and unique insight of the subject. She has participated in a number of Internet Safety films and projects, and has made multiple appearances on radio and TV. Recognizing the need for effective Internet Safety legislation, Alicia testified before Congress, and has lobbied successfully for the Protect Our Children Act of 2008 and ALICIA'S LAW, a state-by-state version of the legislation.

Tonight's special guest is Michael Skinner, a returning NAASCA family member from New Hampshire. Michael is a nationally known award-winning advocate survivor addressing the issues of trauma, abuse and mental health concerns through public speaking and his music. Tonight, among other topics, we'll discuss his perspective on suicide, which were expressed in a recent "Live Through This" written interview. "Live Through This" is a collection of portraits and stories of suicide attempt survivors, as told by those survivors. "Suicide has been around me all my life," says Michael. His mother attempted suicide he explains, "but there was no talking about it. It was just .. something was awry." He goes on, "I've lost two brothers to suicide, okay? And two friends." He points out, "I'm the oldest of five siblings. Every one of us has had [issues], and it's got nothing to do with being mentally ill. It's got to do with the trauma and the abuse that we experienced as kids, because it was pretty horrific. It broke you spiritually. My parents were evil and dark in what they did, 'cause they wanted to crush your spirits." Michael is an oft sought after speaker on the sexual exploitation and trafficking of children and adults and he has appeared as a guest on many TV, radio and Internet shows. His non-profit "The Surviving Spirit" offers Hope, Healing and Help for those impacted by trauma, abuse and mental health challenges through the creative arts, advocacy, education, a monthly newsletter and web site.

Bill founded the recently launched Adult Survivors of Child Abuse Anonymous (ASCAA). Together they will lead tonight's discussion on STEP 4: "Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves." You have worked Steps One and Two with a safe and trusted person – you have surrendered and you have demonstrated your willingness to try a new approach to your life experiences. When you admit your powerlessness over your traumatic history, you learn a comforting and critical truth: that you experienced certain painful life events that you absolutely could not have controlled. You were also not always in control of the coping patterns that have emerged.  For some survivors, this can be a frightening and humbling experience. ~~ A child abuse survivor herself, Rivka Edery is grateful for the spiritual recovery she found in the 12 Steps of AA. She's been active in the 12 Step community for over 17 years. Tonight's special guest is Amy Crohn from New York, a returning NAASCA family member who's a survivor of child abuse, and an accomplished marketing communications, business development professional, writer and journalist. Her book "Dying To Live" explains how childhood maltreatment can lead to adult physical illness. As a youngster Amy was subjected to emotional abuse and neglect. A very nervous child, she was quite often sick, and missed a lot of grade school. Amy became very ill at age 20 with mononucleosis and decided then and there that she was not going to let the first 18 years of her life dictate the rest of it. She writes, "I pushed everything inside. But at at age 36, she continues, "I couldn't hide from my past anymore .. I literally had to die to live" (see book). Amy explains, "While writing my book, I learned of The ACE Study (Adverse Childhood Experiences Study) and took the ACE survey. With a high score of 8, I am convinced that my early childhood traumas caused my adult physical illness." Today, after the suicide of her brother eight months ago, she is feeling the effects of PTSD once again. She goes on, "The early childhood abuse simply does not prepare one for the challenges of life." Amy has recently been trained as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) and, in fact, adopted one foster child in 2000. She says, "It is my hope that I can help educate physicians to include The ACE survey questions in their patient intake questionnaires and, as a CASA, to help interrupt a pattern that may lead to illness later in life." Tonight's special guest is Edward (Ed) Mashek from North Carolina, a child abuse survivor who grew up in foster care. Ed's an active volunteer member of the NAASCA family and is involved in numerous efforts to combat childhood trauma. Ed's a tireless advocate, author, and activist for foster youth, abused children, and all victims of abuse. He has a B.S. in Psychology, an MBA, and is a member of Psi-Chi, the National Honor Society of Psychology. Ed serves as a board member for NAASCA, the National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse, as a co-host and regular panelist on the "Stop Child Abuse Now" (SCAN) radio program, and is a member of RAINN's (the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network) Speakers Bureau. His motivation comes from his own time growing up in an abusive foster home and his desire to prevent others from having to experience the things he did. Ed has spoken at conferences, before governmental committees, and at the US Capital. In July he will be speaking at the SCRIPT conference in Los Angeles, which will be dealing with issues unique and specific to male survivors of trauma and abuse. In August he will be relocating to SE Asia where he will serve as NAASCA's official regional representative and continue his fight against child abuse. Read his BLOG

When we find ourselves or our family in need of help and we turn to those whose job it is to provide that help, we often find we are then victimized by the very people and institutions who are supposed to be there to protect and support us. Confidence in these institutions is at an all time historic low and this loss of trust extends across a wide variety of institutions. It is not just distrust in the government, but other institutions such as medicine, law, social services, non-profits, media, religion, politicians, volunteer organizations and 'advocates'. Instead of working with us and for us as their mandates and ethical codes outline, they are often colluding with government, private industries and other agencies to profit off the pain of the very people they are supposed to protect. Together they will lead tonight's discussion on STEP 2: "Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity" Somewhere in a survivor's programming is a single operative principle, which at once holds the person back trying to heal and grow in this area, but keeps him putting up a front, perhaps even leading to relationships that do not work, dead-end jobs, or boring routines. In this area of trust, which Step 2 directly addresses, the survivor is undeveloped. But most survivors are not lazy or uninterested in their growth. Tonight's special guest is Jody Williams from Las Vegas, a survivor of child abuse, rape, domestic violence, and sex trafficking. Jody's a returning NAASCA family member. She has been in recovery from drug addiction and the sex industry as well as mental illness since 1985. In 1987, Jody founded Sex Workers Anonymous - the first program of it's kind to help men and women across this country to exit the sex industry and/or find recovery after having left it. The hotline answered hundreds of thousands of calls over the years. What started out as a small meeting in a coffee shop soon exploded, and there were eventually meetings across the USA, as well as in five other countries now. Spending five years interviewing 1,000's of recovering prostitutes and sex workers, Jody published the Recovery Guide. This is her group's version of what is the Big Book in Alcoholics Anonymous. For decades Jody has been successfully fighting back the legal brothels from expanding outside of their small county into both California and Nevada. But her activism has sometimes been met with violent retaliation. In 2014, Jody came out with an e-book for parents on "What to do if you suspect your child is involved in prostitution" based on years of getting the same phone call question over and over again.

SPECIAL TOPIC Night - "For Our Kids" - Deborah Maddison and Tracy Baxter, Canadian activists from British Columbia, will join Bill Murray to lead this evening's discussion about the Rights of Children and Families in North America. Tonight's TOPIC: "The Corrupt Business of Supervised Visitation and Custody Evaluation" It is becoming more and more common for good, safe parents to be ordered to see their children only under 'professional supervision', even when there has been no abuse involved. It is also becoming commonplace for parents going through family court custody cases to be forced to pay a 'custody evaluator' to assess their situation and advise the courts what they believe is 'in the child's best interest'. Sadly, more and more we are finding that these services are strictly cash flow businesses for the divorce industry,and are often run by incompetent or worse - criminals. Tonight's show involved an unexpected special guest, Colonel Worten, US Special Forces from Florida (retired) who called in to comment on the autobiographical book he'd recently read, "Out of the Darkness: The Michelle Bless Story" which was written by one of NAASCA's most dedicated family members, volunteers and show panelists, Michelle Bless from Cincinnati, Ohio. During the course of the show he shared with us how important it was for him to have encountered her meaningful work, and how he recognized the positive and important contribution we were making to the issues child abuse and specifically to the subject of Military Rape. Included was a discussion of how unfairly military personnel and veterans have been treated both when reporting sexual and trauma transgressions, usually committed at the hands of superior officers, and when seeking medical and other kinds of veteran's services.

Tonight's special guest is Elisabeth Corey from Richmond, Virginia, a returning NAASCA family member who is a survivor of severe childhood sex abuse and trafficking. She's here to talk about her new web site and services at: BeatingTrauma.com. "My childhood was not a childhood, she explains. "In my family, men had sex with little girls. It was our normal. It was our culture. And it was generational. My parents grew up with it. Their parents grew up with it. Most of the victims in our family didn't even remember it because the trauma caused memory loss. We were a family of traumatized individuals who were doing whatever it took to survive .. usually at the expense of the others." Elisabeth goes on, "My parents, uncles and grandparents started sexually abusing me when I was 2 years old. This was necessary to break me. I was indoctrinated in to a way of life. I was brainwashed. But there was a problem. As I got older, they realized I was a talker. They had not successfully broken me. I was actually telling people. The good news for them .. nobody believed me." Over the years, Elisabeth has worked with many organizations on advocacy, and now offers services herself at BeatingTrauma.com. She focuses on trauma theory, research and practice, but from a survivor perspective. She includes interviews with other survivors and guest blog posts from clinicians.

SPECIAL TOPIC Night - "Child Abuse, Trauma and 12-Step Recovery" - STEP 1 (and we'll include a bit about TRADITION 1) - SCAN host Bill Murray will be joined by special guest co-host Rivka Edery, MSW, LCSW, from NYC, author of the book “Trauma and Transformation: A 12-Step Guide." Bill founded the recently launched Adult Survivors of Child Abuse Anonymous (ASCAA). Together they will lead tonight's discussion on STEP 1: "We admitted we were powerless over the abuse and trauma of our youth -- that our lives had become unmanageable." The survivor's decision to begin a process of healing begins with the admission of what happened to them. This involves working through the defenses employed to shun from consciousness the excruciatingly painful memories of the traumatic events. Having passed through this phase of remembering (in any way possible), the acceptance of the truth of the traumatic experience moves the survivor towards resolution. Thus begins the creation of an internal, healing space for the survivor to feel what remained frozen in time, banished and unwelcome in consciousness. ~~ A child abuse survivor herself, Rivka Edery is grateful for the spiritual recovery she found in the 12 Steps of AA. She's been active in the 12 Step community for over 17 years. Tonight's special guest is Polly Moore from Atlanta, Georgia, a returning NAASCA family member. Polly is the Executive Administrative Assistant of Angela Williams, Founder of VOICE Today, a non-profit organization whose mission is to break the cycle and silence of child sexual abuse through awareness, prevention, and healing programs. She began volunteering with VOICE Today on July 17, 2012, the day after she broke her silence. She'd found her voice at VOICE Today's support group the night before. Polly grew up with six siblings in Mobile, Alabama, but was only 8 years old when her father died of lung cancer. Soon two neighborhood boys began to molest her, friends of her older twin brothers. A couple of years later she was assaulted by another neighbor and later by her older brother. She was able to break away from the abuse at the age of twelve, but was by then deep in the darkness of isolation. Polly is now a mother and grandmother, and has lived in Atlanta for the past 15 years. She is contemplating returning to finish her final year at Western Carolina University where she majored in Accounting, and has become a devoted advocate for adult survivors of Child Sexual Abuse. Polly says she will forever continue to help fellow adult survivors find their voice and welcome their healing through the working of Angela Williams and VOICE Today.

Tonight's TOPIC: "CPS and our Family Courts - A Criminal Consortium?" When does abuse of power cross the line into flat out criminal behavior? With precedent setting court cases challenging this criminal enterprise under such statutes as RICO (criminal racketeering), Misfeasance (wrongful exercise of lawful authority) and Malfeasance (legally unjustified/harmful act by a public official) succeeding, and the exposure of Child Trafficking and Abuse by these same agencies, it is very clear who the real criminals are. More frighteningly, they are still operating flagrantly and for the most part without any penalty at all. Tonight's special guest is Judy Cagnemi from Suffolk County, Long Island, a returning NAASCA family member who's a child abuse survivor and blogger at One Woman's Adventure Through Life and Recovery. Today she says describes a beautiful life, and is grateful for her family, home and career. But, she writes, "For most of my life, I didn't see things this way. I was filled with rage and self-hate." Her mother, bruised and battered by Judy's father, turned up on her maternal grandparents doorstep when Judy was an infant. She continues, "My mother made it clear she never wanted me. I suffered neglect and emotional abuse from her." She was physically abused by her grandmother, " .. and much later on I realized I was sexually abused by my grandfather. I was a victim acting out for decades by abusing myself with alcohol, drugs, engaging in physically and emotionally abusive relationships and making incredibly bad choices." As an adult Judy was in therapy for over 20 years for depression and emotional child abuse and neglect before uncovering the sexual aspects of her trauma. She says, "Since the door was opened, memories have been springing forward and it feels as though they are happening now rather than 30+ years ago. It's a strange reward for being in a better mental state." She goes on, "My mind must feel that I am finally able to accept the memories of what happened and recover from it" She concludes, "Along the way, I turned from the victim I was to the survivor I am today. I look forward to sharing how that miracle happened for me."

Tonight's special guest is Nicolette Winn from San Angelo, Texas, a survivor, activist and author of "One." She says she's, ".. applying the principles of Industrial-Organizational Psychology to my role as Founder of "No Longer Silenced Movement" to pair teen and young adult survivors of child abuse with positive, concise resources so that they can succeed in life after abuse." She goes on, "Teen and young adult survivors of child abuse often don't have resources after leaving foster care or abusive homes. I wrote a book to reach out to them and started a program." NAASCA agrees there are not enough services provided to foster care kids, especially those needed in the particularly difficult time of transitioning out of protective serves and emerging into adult life. The quote from Jordan Shaw that accompany's the book's Amazon page reads, ""All it takes to start a raging inferno is a spark and only a step to start a life changing journey. If you set aside the time daily, you can reach for whatever you believe is greater than, deeper than, or beyond yourself. Q & A Night - Call in .. ask questions .. Tonight's THEME: How bullying behaviors can lead to abusive behaviors. NAASCA family member Mary Romero from Richmond, VA, an abuse survivor herself, will lead the discussion about bullying. We are consistently hearing about bullying in our schools, nearly on a daily basis. It has become an epidemic. When bullying behaviors goes un-checked, they can lead to abusive behaviors whether in children or adults alike. There have been far too many children who have taken their own lives due to being bullied and this evening's discussion will help give us the information and tools that parents can use in helping their children deal with bullying and it's negative effects. Now an anti-child abuse advocate, Mary is a Life Coach and author of the book "The Breakdown of an All-American Family: an autobiography of child abuse domestic violence and recovery." But instead there was a robust discussion of a variety of topics, chiefly about the how media covers (and doesn't cover) the issues of child abuse and trauma. We also talked about the important role played by reliable government statistics. Criticism of how media and government presentations was directed at our ability as a group to impress upon the general public that the issues we cover, child abuse and trauma, are as important to them as almost anything else we consider a priority to address in America. Tonight's special guest is Tim Fisher, a returning NAASCA family member who lives in the Las Vegas area and runs Juvenile Justice Now. Tim, a child abuse survivor, will be with us tonight to describe his experience, strength and hope. Tim was seven years old when he met his predator, a neighbor, teaching Sunday school at the Baptist church. Now Steve Friess has written an article about Tim's important work: One Survivor's Crusade Reveals a Plague of Errors in Nation's Sex Offender Registries. The subtitle: "Estimates of the number of entries with crucial mistakes run into the tens of thousands. One man—and pretty much only one man—is trying to fix them." Tim has told us in the past, "By the time I had reached my 14th birthday I had been sexually molested approximately 350 times over the course of seven years." He continues, "It took four years for me to become strong enough to come forward." Eventually he went to the Anaheim police and reported his abuse and name his predator. From start to finish it took a year almost to the day for him to be convicted. Eventually he took a plea of guilty to 49 counts of child molestation, lewd conducts involving a minor and with the use of force. Sadly although he was sentenced to 2 to 12 years he was released after serving just nine months. "I'm here to remind you that the abuse never stops for the victim," Tim says, "I encourage anyone who has been sexually abused to make a report even if it happened when you were a child." In the recently published article, Steve accompanies Tim to the home of his molester, a registered sex offender.

Together they will lead tonight's discussion on STEP 10: "Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it." Step Ten is not about maintenance, because there is a rule in our universe that nothing ever stays the same. All living matter is either in a process of growing or in the process of regressing. Up until now, if you followed the first nine steps with an honest heart and the direction of a Higher Power, you will have grown considerably. If you do not keep growing, you will start sliding back into your old behavior patterns and ways of thinking. ~~ A child abuse survivor herself, Rivka Edery is grateful for the spiritual recovery she found in the 12 Steps of AA. SPECIAL TOPIC Night - "For Our Kids" - Deborah Maddison and Tracy Baxter, Canadian activists from British Columbia, will join Bill Murray to lead this evening's discussion about the Rights of Children and Families in North America. Tonight's TOPIC: Predators in Positions of Power - As many of you may already know, April is Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month. While we're glad that we're shining a light on such a serious issue this month, the reality is that this should be a priority every day of the year. We will be looking at what we consider to be one of the worst types of child abuse. Childhood sexual assault is steadily growing despite increased awareness, particularly by those in power who are supposed to be the ones protecting our children. What we found when we looked into this was beyond shocking. Joining us this week will be Dr. Lori Handrahan, an Investigative Journalist and Dr. Jim Singer, a mandated reporter. We'll also have members of the International group Op Death Eaters. One of the main goals of the Op is the the collection of as much factual evidence pointing to the existence of an international paedosadist industry and sharing this information through numerous country and region-specific Twitter accounts that can then be used in legal proceedings. In addition, we also welcome back panelist Eugena Couture, author of Adoption Not An Option.
