Join Cheryl Lee - That Radio Chick on STILL ROCKIN' IT for news, reviews, music and interviews with some of our favourite Australian musicians.Australian rock legend Ross Wilson opens up in this fascinating backstage conversation just moments before taking the stage on his record-breaking "50 Years of Hits" tour. With the tour expanding to over 150 shows, this marks the most extensive touring schedule of his 60-year career—proving that retirement isn't in his vocabulary. From humble beginnings in Melbourne church choirs to forming iconic bands, Ross shares the pivotal moments that shaped his extraordinary journey. He reveals how Daddy Cool emerged from his experimental band Sons of the Vegetal Mother, becoming the surprise hit of the 1971 Myponga Festival before they'd even released a record. Their pioneering music video for "Eagle Rock," filmed at this festival, helped propel them to nationwide success—years before MTV made music videos essential.Beyond his performing career, Ross offers insights into his work as a producer, including discovering and producing Skyhooks, whose success eventually surpassed Daddy Cool's record-breaking sales. Though selective about production work, his golden touch extended to working with Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons, The Screaming Jets, and writing hits for other artists—including "Touch of Paradise" for John Farnham and "I Come In Peace" for Joe Cocker's final recording. The conversation takes unexpected turns through Ross's television appearances, his induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame (twice!), and the peculiar pants-dropping tradition that accompanies "Eagle Rock" at weddings and parties across Australia, revealing plans for attempting a world-record charity event around this unique phenomenon.Despite his legendary status, Ross remains refreshingly grounded. His latest blues EP tackles modern social media addiction, showing his continued relevance while honoring his musical roots. As he continues selling out venues with his band The Peaceniks, it's clear that after six decades, Ross Wilson isn't just still rocking it—he's reaching new heights.Subscribe now to hear more intimate conversations with the artists who shaped Australian music history! What has Ross the Boss been up to lately?  Let's find out!!Get out when you can, support local music and I'll see you down the front!!Visit: ThatRadioChick.com.au

Le groupe Garbage est de retour avec un tout nouveau single intitulé "There's No Future In Optimism", premier extrait de leur prochain album studio ‘'Let All That We Imagine Be The Light''. Hokum bands of the 1920s and '30s created a brand of urban folk tunes called “jug band music” that famously blended the sounds of the plantation and the church with those of the swing, swerve and sway of nascent jazz. And no one did it better than those Flood heroes The Memphis Jug Band, formed in 1927 by Beale Street guitar/harmonica player Will Shade. Shade was also known as Son Brimmer, a nickname given to him by his grandmother Annie Brimmer (“son” being short for grandson). The name stuck when other members of the band noticed how the sun bothered him and he used the brim of a hat to shade his eyes. The Ohio Valley InfluenceIncidentally, Will Shade first heard jug band music in our part of the country, on the 1925 recordings by Louisville's Dixieland Jug Blowers, and he wanted to take that sound south.“He was excited by what he heard,” Wikipedia notes, “and felt that bringing this style of music to his hometown of Memphis could be promising. He persuaded a few local musicians, though still reluctant, to join him in creating one of the first jug bands in Memphis.”While Shade was the constant, the rest of his band's personnel varied from day to day, as he booked gigs and arranging recording sessions. Some players remained a long time. For instance, Charlie Burse (nicknamed "Laughing Charlie," "Uke Kid Burse" and "The Ukulele Kid”) recorded some 60 sides with the MJB. Others — like Memphis Minnie and Hattie Hart — used the band as a training ground before going on to make careers of their own.Street MusicThe Memphis Jug Band's venues, as The Corner Jug Store web site noted, included “street corners, juke joints, city nightclubs, political rallies, private parties, hotel ballrooms, medicine shows and riverboats,” and it cut many styles and repertoires to suit its varied audiences. Most of all, the MJB's sound was the music of the street, as demonstrated in the open lines of their wonderful “4th Street Mess Around,” recorded in May 1930 for Victor by Ralph Peer: Go down Fourth until you get to Vance, Ask anybody about that brand new dance. The girls all say, “You're going my way, It's right here for you, here's your only chance.”And what was that “brand new dance?” Shoot, take your pick! The Eagle Rock, the turkey trot and fox trot, camel walk and Castle Walk, the Charleston and the Lindy Hop were all stirring the feet and wiggling the hips of listeners and players in the ‘20 and ‘30s.But Mess Around? But what's a “mess around?” Well, as we reported here earlier, New Orleans jazzman Wingy Manone in his wonderful autobiography called Trumpet on the Wing, talked about watching people dance the mess-around at the fish fries of his youth in the Crescent City at the beginning of the 20th century.“The mess-around,” said Wingy, “was a kind of dance where you just messed around with your feet in one place, letting your body do most of the work, while keeping time by snapping fingers with one hand and holding a slab of fish in the other!” Now, that's an image. Our Take on the TuneThe Flood first started messing around jug band tunes nearly 50 Springs ago, when the band was still a youngster. Before their juncture with juggery, the guys played mainly old folk songs and some Bob Dylan and John Prine and a smattering of radio tunes from folks like James Taylor and The Eagles. But then they discovered some fine old recordings by Tampa Red and Georgia Tom, by groups like The Mississippi Sheiks and Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers, and most especially the great Memphis Jug Band. Ever since then, The Flood's musical buffet table has been a lot bigger, with tunes like this one from the warmup at last week's rehearsal.More Jugginess?Of course, The Flood's jug band music mission has continued. If today's song and story have you ready to join the campaign, check out The Hokum channel on the free Radio Floodango music streaming service which has dozens of jug band tunes ready to rock you. Click here to tune it in and you'll be ready to sing along at the next Flood fest. This is a public episode. Min started Colorfield Records to pursue a less traditional approach to recording, one that he refers to as “sculpted chaos.” He says, “I want what's in the subconscious. I don't want it ironed out. In this episode, we meet the humans behind the artistic and cultural project that is the TNT Traysikel.   We start, in random order, with Mike Arceaga. Mike was born in the Philippines and moved to LA with his family when he was 10. He says that the transition from his homeland to LA was difficult. The family first landed in Highland Park, which Mike points out wasn't hip then. That's where he got started doing graffiti art.   In the mid-to-late-Eighties, they moved, first to the Eagle Rock neighborhood in LA, then Pomona, where, by the time he moved there, he'd become a full-fledged graffiti artist. He says it's what got him into art   In high school, Mike learned technical drawing. He went to junior college, had art school on his mind. He was in a hip-hop crew, tagged ramps, and was friends with skaters, but never skated himself. He also breakdanced, but says it never took.   After high school, he just wanted to get out of his parents house, and so he signed up to join the Army. But when Mike's dad found out about that, he cried and urged him to go to school instead.   And so he visited San Francisco to attend a summer program at the Academy of Art University. And he fell in love with The City almost immediately. He shares the moment of coming up the escalator at Powell BART and seeing the scene on the street as the moment SF got his heart.   He loved walking around the hills before art class, where he was starting to meet artists from all over. And slowly, he discovered the rest of The City by hopping on Academy shuttles. Soon after this summer program, Mike came back to visit the Art Institute. When he and a friend saw the view from the roof at SFAI, he decided to try to get into school there.   Next, we meet TNT Traysikel's Paolo Asuncion. Paolo came to the US from the Philippines when he was 14. Before that migration, he had found his first girlfriend as well as a friend group that wasn't bullying him. The move abroad disrupted that progress.   Paolo's family first came to Ontario, California, just outside of LA and not far from where Mike and his family were. His mom had met a family in church and she and her three kids lived with them. A family of four crammed into a single bedroom.   He went to high school all over LA, first in Echo Park (before it was hip), then in the Rampart District, and at Torrance High (think Fast Times at Ridgemont High). Then Paolo's mom put him in Marshall High in Las Feliz (think Grease).   Paolo's dad was a fairly famous actor back in the Philippines. But when he moved to the US to be with family, he ended up managing the apartment building where they lived and did door-to-door sales. His parents soon got divorced and his dad went back to his home country.   Paolo went to Diamond Bar High School his senior year (which he says was very Breakfast Club-ish). He started playing guitar, which he says got him in with the cool kids. He even formed a band, but after high school, he went back to the Philippines, where he got his girlfriend pregnant.   Then Paolo moved back to Glendale in Southern California. He was still on a tourist visa and tried to get jobs that would sponsor his work visa, which was difficult.   One day, his uncle in LA asked to help him move to SF and they left Glendale at 10 at night, drove up I-5 to 580, then crossed Bay Bridge at sunrise. Looking out the windshield at the scene in front of him, Paolo thought, WHAT IS THIS PLACE?   He spent a week here on that trip, during which time he had the same Powell escalator experience as Mike. Heloved it so much that he decided to move here. A friend of his uncle's got him a graphic design job and in 1996, he moved here.   Last but not least, we meet Rachel Lastimosa. Rachel was born and raised in San Diego, the kid of a Navy person, which is how her dad got his U.S. citizenship.   Members of Rachel's family have been in SF since the Forties, and when she was a kid, they visited here a lot from San Diego. Rachel's first memories of San Francisco involve mostly touristy things. From a young age, 12 or so, she knew she wanted to live here. Rachel says she loved the culture here and felt a friendliness from strangers unlike what she experienced back home in San Diego.   She grew up in a strict house and, because of that, was into extracurricular activities. Her parents expected her to cook and do laundry, but she escaped into music—playing, writing, and performing. Rachel wrote her first song when she was in first grade. Today, she plays piano, keyboards, and bass, and does vocals. And she produces and writes music.   Rachel says she always wanted to build community. She helped put together the first culture night at her high school. But as soon as she could, after graduation, she came to San Francisco. In fact, SF State was the only school she applied to.   Once here, she joined a band and majored in electronic music. This was the early 2000s and she's been here ever since. She writes scores for theater and films and has been in a few bands. A collaboration she did with the Filipino Center made her realize how art can bring communities together.   Check back next week for Part 2 with Rachel, Paolo, and Mike. In it, they'll share the origin story for TNT Traysikel—the part motorcyle/sidecar, part karaoke machine, part mobile Filipino cultural pride project.   We recorded this podcast at TNT HQ in South San Francisco in March 2024.   Photography by Jeff Hunt

Can solutions to California's housing crisis be found in how we used to design and build homes in the past, namely smaller multifamily dwellings in neighborhoods and cities with fewer zoning restrictions. That topic is explored by Los Angeles urban planner Max Podemski. In his new book, A Paradise of Small Houses. I met up with Podemski in the L.A. neighborhood of Eagle Rock. In California, tens of thousands of immigrants with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals will soon be able to get health insurance. That's after President Joe Biden on Friday announced that those with DACA can enroll in Affordable Care Act coverage. The union representing some 48 thousand academic workers in the UC system is planning to hold a strike authorization vote as early as this week over what they say is the university's crackdown on pro-Palestinian protests. The decision to consider striking gained momentum after police action at UCLA that led to more than 200 arrests early last week. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In the latest episode, I open the pages of my life to you, sharing the raw and real experiences that have shaped me. I read a chapter of my upcoming memoir tentatively titled, "It Began in the Darkness" when I was left in an incubator by my parents because I was born a month premature. Here's a sampling: "Born one month early, trained to live without touch, in the incubator starting at 6:15 a.m. on July 16 on Sunset Boulevard. I'm much older than my siblings, so I remember when they were born. I remember their grey eyes and how my grandmother, my mother, said they could not yet see clearly. They only knew shapes. Smell, touch. I watched as my youngest brother's eyes became solid, began to see the environment he was born into. The screaming so loudly that it was as though we all went deaf. The tyrannical nature of my father beating into us when his rage went beyond what his yelling could accomplish. The hysterical nature of my mother when she went into her bipolar fits and spurts of completely unsanctioned and unacceptable behavior, to demanding that we love her, that we pay her respect, that we don't talk back. But what was there really to say anyway? My youngest brother's eyes speak more than his words will ever reveal. In the old house on Toland Way, in the ghetto of Eagle Rock, before it became hipster, I remember the way the sun would shine through the sliding glass door that separated the room where my sister and I slept on our bunk bed from the same room where my mother and father shared their bed."Heart-to-heart interactions can be transformative. The past doesn't determine the future. Because I also reveal the first time my Chinese father said, "I love you" to me in college after my boyfriend's father unexpectedly dies of a heart attack, and it turns out to be a wake-up call in so many ways.I'd be honored if you like this episode, if you would share, rate, and review this podcast so more people can feel less alone in the world.Get a free 7-Day Rewrite Your Reality course to get the exact mindset shifts to create a life you love in under 10 minutes a day — delivered directly to your inbox. The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Pete Min is a recording engineer, producer and label owner based in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles. His label Colorfield Records features artful collaborative explorations with musicians in unlikely configurations.  Pete's studio Lucy's Meat Market has become one of the most in demand spots for recording among a subset of musical artists with LA ties ranging from Ben Wendel and Larry Goldings to Andrew Bird and Feist.  Min started Colorfield Records to pursue a less traditional approach to recording, one that he refers to as “sculpted chaos.” He says, “I want what's in the subconscious. I don't want it ironed out. When people are just doing it and it's coming out, that's what I'm interested in.” Since launching in 2021 the label has released records by Abe Rounds, Larry Goldings, Mark Guiliana, Sam Gendel, Anthony Wilson, Brad Allen Williams and others.  Here Pete Min talks about his early development on the east coast, how moving to Los Angeles gave him the space to reinvent himself musically, and what it means to make art music. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/studios

I have a pretty busy week lined up so you're getting this new episode early! Returning to the podcast today, we have a fan favorite in the form of Mr. Jordan Harper. One of my dearest friends, this podcast's very first guest, and my Pandemic Movie Club, and Game Night crew buddy, Jordan is the Edgar award-winning author of She Rides Shotgun, Love & Other Wounds, The Last King of California, & Everybody Knows. Additionally, a screenwriter and producer of such shows as The Mentalist, Gotham, and Hightown, Jordan crafted one of the most beautiful pilots for L.A. Confidential, which CBS stupidly did not pick up, but was so acclaimed he screened and did a virtual panel on the show at the ATX TV Festival. A Missouri native - and yes, that will come up in today's conversation - Jordan currently lives in L.A. along with his talented screenwriter girlfriend Megan Mostyn-Brown, and adorable dog Ellroy. When Jordan & I planned this episode, we had no idea that we'd wind up recording on Day 100 of the WGA strike, which also happened to be National Book Lovers Day, or that it'd fall on a day when I could really use the distraction of laughing about movies with a good friend.A very funny, fast-paced, yet intensive blast from the past that celebrates & interrogates our childhood nostalgia, in this 85-minute conversation, we dig through what he's dubbed "a great stack of videos" from 1989. Kicking things off by sharing our thoughts on that bygone video store era (which has been revived in his Eagle Rock neighborhood, thanks to Vidiots), we open with a hilarious foray into two trashtastic films we enjoy throwing on as needed - Road House & Black Rain. Following up our discussion on those with something lighter in the form of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, we conclude the episode with Jordan's thrilling insights into Gleaming the Cube, including a major appreciation of the filmography of actor Max Perlich & the ways in which the brilliant screenwriter Michael Tolkin uses a teen skateboard picture to dig into political issues of the time. Filled with laughter, this one is sure to be a new hit with listeners, & I know it'll brighten your day.Originally Posted on Patreon (8/13/23) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/87634121 Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive Logo: KateGabrielle.com

Vidiots originally opened in 1985 as a woman-founded video shop and screening space in Santa Monica. With its many movies to rent and classic, hard-to-find titles, it had a devoted clientele of local movie lovers and Hollywood cinephiles. Joining us today on FilmWeek to talk about this big opening is Vidiot's executive director Maggie Mackay and board member and LAist film critic Claudia Puig.

Dana Rant - from a listener Briana Hey Ladies! I'm so glad you're back! I have a rant that hopefully at least one other person can relate to. I'm getting married in March and I'm at the point in planning where I have a new task for the wedding almost every day.  One task that I HATE is tracking people down for an RSVP.  I don't understand how someone can get an invite to a (hopefully) once in a lifetime event with free food and drinks and go, 'mm...let me think about it." And then wait for so long that I have to ask again and again and AGAIN! Like, what!? I sent out official invites SEVEN MONTHS AGO! And I started telling people almost a year ago! You should know by now!  And just let me know! Why is it so hard?? I shouldn't have to track you down. Anyway, I could rant about all the annoying wedding behavior I've experienced over the last year but I won't.  Thank you both for being so lovely and such a delight.  (Dana would like to apologize for being this human) :(   Jess Rant - from Alissa and Ashley  Butter Candles https://www.today.com/food/trends/butter-candles-tiktok-rcna62377   *****   Dana Corner - Animal Instincts meets Kids Are Amazing From a listener The Steinbrenner High School Boys Cross-Country Team is making an early-morning stop at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay to pick up their running mates. The team takes shelter dogs to Al Lopez Park in Tampa for some exercise and a change of scenery. It's part of a tradition for the team that started four years ago. Beyond just taking these dogs for a good run, they're also giving them exposure to help them find homes.   Jess Corner - What the What!?  Brrrrrrrrrrrrr-gers https://www.chewboom.com/2022/08/17/burger-king-launches-new-ice-whopper-featuring-a-layer-of-shaved-ice-in-japan/   ******* Dana Rave - from a listener (REV - Reptile Education of Virginia) The reptile rescue I volunteer with is Reptile Education of Virginia (REV).  We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and are a small group of people who are passionate about reptiles, their care, and educating the public on these amazing creatures.  We take in sick, injured, and abandoned pet reptiles and work with local veterinarians to get them the care they need and eventually adopt them out into good, loving homes.  We are an all volunteer organization and we foster all rescues from our own homes.  We depend solely on donations to fund our organization, so we often have to dip into our own personal money to care for some of our most dire cases.   We are located in VA, but work with organizations and people in both VA and NC.  We are always in need of donations and foster parents!  We also travel to local events with our ambassador animals and teach children and adults about these animals, including their proper care and how and where they live in the wild. It is very important to us that people understand that these are not throwaway pets, and that they deserve the same level of love and care as more "traditional" pets do.   We primarily operate out of eastern VA, so if you are in the area and would like to schedule an event for a girl/boy scout troop, church event, school, etc., please reach out and we will be happy to work with you!  We charge a nominal fee for our education events.  You can reach us at reptileva@gmail.com and can also find us on Facebook and Instagram at ReptileVA or Reptile Education of Virginia. We have our adoptable pets posted on both social media pages!  If you would like to donate, you can do so through our website at www.reptileva.org :)  If you are in the area and are interested in fostering, please email or message us to go through the vetting process. We will adopt out of state, but we don't ship our animals, so adoptees must be willing to travel to pick up their new pet :)   We hope to one day live in a world where reptiles are no longer neglected and abandoned, and we believe that education is paramount to achieving that goal!        Jess Rave - Miry's List  www.miryslist.org   https://miryslist.org/donate?gclid=CjwKCAiA3KefBhByEiwAi2LDHKf5GvK4IRoCbN0cJeg-MPIALl5JHC_J6gibJbakW7O2y0pLmxT10xoCJ8UQAvD_BwE   In 2017, over 53,000 refugees were resettled in the United States, most of whom are children and parents. Many Americans, think of these families in their communities, and wonder: What can I do to help? What began as one mom helping another mom turned into a nonprofit organization serving over 250 families (1,500 individuals!) -- mostly families with young kids resettling in America from Syria, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq and Yemen.  Collecting donations in February at Leanna Lin's Wonderland in Eagle Rock!!!
