Mikael Levin explores our conceptions of place, identity and temporarily. His photographs are often of commonplace, everyday sites that, while seemingly insignificant in themselves, tie into larger historical events or movements of our times. By way of these places, his photographs form a topography of societal structures, predispositions, influences and memory. A note on the Stono Rebellion image from the artist: “Critical Places is essentially about how the rebellions of the enslaved are remembered (or not remembered) in the landscape. Through my witnessing of these places in my photographs, I am bringing forward how these rebellions still echo in social patterns and economic structures. What we see the case of the Stono Rebellion is the emergence of the trope of the Black man as "feared, violent, irrational.” Other rebellions are early examples of how power controls information, excessive Police violence, the lack of the Black voice in the telling of our history, the minimization of the woman's roll, and so on and so forth.“ LEVIN, Mikael (b. 1954) Untitled (from Subaqueous). 2018 Gelatin silver print, printed by artist. 2018 Edition of 5 Paper and image size: 19 ½ x 19 ½ inches. Lynden Williams is a producer from Salt Lake City, Utah, who makes music as Divorce Court. Divorce Court is a chill wave, lo-fi project electronic project inspired by Lynden’s memories of youth and old home movies. I appreciate the consistent theme of faded memories and emotions, which the lo-fi nature of the music and his live visuals of old home videos bring to life. Lynden and I spoke quite a lot about producing music, arrangements, and live performance. We spoke about the challenge we all face in believing in a musical project long enough to bring it into existence. We covered a range of topics that left me feeling inspired and better equipped to make music. Listen on iTunes or Stitcher or Google Play This episode is sponsored by Splice. Isaac Cotec is a musician, producer, and Ableton Certified Trainer. He makes music as Subaqueous and runs a website and YouTube channel about all things music production and Ableton Live. This summer he will run his 3rd Audio Grove Music Retreat. I first met Isaac in 2013 when we were going for our Ableton certification. Since then, I've followed his work closely and collaborated with him on a few Ableton Live Packs. This conversation with Isaac covers a lot of topics, including his Audio Grove Music Retreats, how he likes to batch his work together to be more productive, and his own workflow for the album writing process. It was a lot of fun catching up with Isaac and learning some of his tips and tricks to stay productive and inspired. In this episode I share my feelings of grief and offer ways to find meaning in all of it. (This is a peaceful approach and is not meant to create further divisions.) Subaqueous is my new project focusing on deeper house sounds, soulful, funky tunes and some Chicago style beats dusted with the odd sprinkling of disco dust. This is the first in a series of new regular monthly mixes where I bring together a selection of tracks that may not necessarily seem like they belong together. The lines between genre's are the most fluid they've ever been and these mixes feature tracks that somehow share a common element which has touched my soul. This months mix starts with a dreamy melodic track and progresses through some soul and funk before finishing on an energetic high note with a great vocal. Enjoy, Charlie.
