Starting off Season 2 in 2024 with an episode featuring trombonist, educator, and composer James Burton III! We delved into James' trombone origin story, exploring his musical evolution across various music institutions and alongside legends like Illinois Jacquet to his professional stints on Broadway and in the broader music scene. Beyond his illustrious career, we explored his impactful role as an educator at Juilliard and beyond. Our Q&A session also featured insightful inquiries about setups, what James' has been listening to recently, and the prospect of relocating to NYC to pursue a career in music. This is THE episode to catch if you've ever been curious about what goes into a vibrant music career in NYC! Don't know much about James? Let's catch you up: “Trombonist, composer, arranger James Burton III has lent his sound to multiple Grammy Award-winning albums and Tony Award-winning Broadway productions. Born in Queens, now a resident of Harlem, Burton III is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of the Jackie McLean Institute at the Hartt School of Music. While earning his Master's Degree and Artist Diploma from the Juilliard School, Burton held both the Morse and Gluck Fellowships and received the Schuman Prize, an award named for Juilliard's founding president and given to one graduating Masters Degree candidate annually.Burton got his professional start playing with many of the great large ensembles; the Illinois Jacquet Big Band, the Dizzy Gillespie All Stars, the Lincoln Center and Vanguard Jazz Orchestras etc. Additionally, the opportunity to perform/record with legends Jimmy Heath, Slide Hampton, Ron Carter and Christian McBride inspired Burton to co-found a 10-piece ensemble called the Uptown Jazz Tentet, which celebrated the release of a second album in late 2020, to much critical acclaim. Currently, Burton's playing and original compositions can be heard alongside band mates Jeremy Pelt and Wayne Escoffery in a dynamic new ensemble; Black Art Jazz Collective. BAJC has released three albums since its inception, the latest two reaching the #1 position on the JazzWeek Charts for international radio play. In the model of jazz education pioneer Jackie McLean, Burton is an avid educator and has been a full time associate professor at both the Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music as well as Director of Jazz Education at New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Burton continues to pass on the legacy of the music via master classes, ensemble coachings and workshops for arts education institutions across the globe.” Our next live episode will be during the NAMM Show in Anaheim, California, later this month and will feature special guest Trent Austin! Great conversation with New York's Bandits On The Run, an indie-folk pop trio of genuinely kind and charismatic folks! I'd first seen them at a SoFar Sounds show in the summer of 2018 and was an instant fan - and instantly jealous of their suitcase bass drum. They've been working on music in quarantine and their latest, 'Hurricane', releases March 19th (pre-save link in show notes). Nite Owls chats with the Bandits (Adrian Blake Enscoe, Sydney Shepherd, and Regina Strayhorn) about coping with the highs of being a rising band, their journey, and adaption during Covid, making music, finding solitude on tour, privilege, race, and the importance of storytelling. Not to mention, a wonderful performance!Follow Nite Owls on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Eventually Nicholas moved to New York where he expanded his interests to include production and mixing. Nicholas is currently attending the Manhattan School of Music in Harlem, New York City. Since his debut with his own trio in 2011, Shai has shaped a strong and unique personal identity and has portrayed an incredible musical fluidity, making Shai and his band one of the most powerful and harmonious groups in the jazz today. 2018 marked an important year for Shai, signing with major jazz label ECM and recording his first album “The Dream Thief” there, featuring his trio, but also him as a solo-pianist. Introspective, lyrical, virtuosic and differentiated. In its review of ‘The Dream Thief’, All About Jazz spoke of “a searching lyrical atmosphere, emotional eloquence and communal virtuosity that serves the music.” All of which also applies to ‘Human’, Shai’s latest release on ECM, where Maestro’s outgoing, highly-communicative band with fellow Israeli Ofri Nehemya on drums and Peruvian bassist Jorge Roeder becomes a quartet with the inspired addition of US trumpeter Philip Dizack. Shai’s expansive pianism is well-matched by Dizack’s alert, quick-thinking approach to improvising. And, as ever, Maestro is taking the music forward while also respecting its sense of tradition. ‘Human’ was recorded at Studios la Buissonne in the South of France in February 2020, and produced by Manfred Eicher. Today's Guests: “the vertiginous sensation of being both slightly behind the beat and hurtling into the next measure.” - JazzTimes on Johnathan Blake Johnathan Blake, one of the most accomplished drummers of his generation, has also proven himself a complete and endlessly versatile musician — "the ultimate modernist," as John Murph of NPR has dubbed him. Blake's gift for composition and band leading reflects years of live and studio experience across the aesthetic spectrum. Through years-long memberships in the Tom Harrell Quintet, the Kenny Barron Trio and other top ensembles, Blake has reaped the benefits of prolonged exposure to the greats of our time — arguably of all time. Through his powerful, evocative drumming and fully rounded artistry, he's also left a huge imprint on the music of such rising figures in jazz as Hans Glawischnig, Alex Sipiagin, Donny McCaslin, Avishai Cohen, Omer Avital, Patrick Cornelius, Michael Janisch, Shauli Einav, Jaleel Shaw and more. To date, Blake has appeared on over 50 albums. Mike Cobb sits down for a freewheeling interview with Scott Sharrard, an NYC based guitar master and former musical director of the Gregg Allman Band.
Aaron Sefchick and Joe McMurray bring in drummer Graham Doby to discuss drums and the music scene in New York City. Graham tells the guys about his musical journey, including playing jazz in high school and studying jazz drumming at George Mason University before moving to NYC to work as a full-time musician. Graham remembers playing at different venues in Washington, DC while he was in music school, and Joe and Graham reminisce about ear-training classes at George Mason with Dr. Anthony Maiello. The guys also contemplate the value of Berklee College of Music as it compares to other music programs/options. Graham talks about the complexities of the NYC music scene: it's competitive nature, it's different circles of musicians (from professional jazz players to wedding bands to professional players of other genres), and it's often low-paying or pay-to-play gigs. Despite any difficulties, Graham loves being part of NYC's scene. There are great players, exciting opportunities, and cool people. Aaron gets Graham to tell us about his experience opening for Parliament and the stories of his interactions with George Clinton. Graham has built a recording studio in NYC to record other bands and to produce his own music. The guys ask him to explain how he manages the noise and his neighbors in an apartment building. Aaron, Joe, and Graham discuss how to book gigs for a self-managed tour. Graham talks about his work with a non-profit group that provides music education for youth, senior citizens, and students with disabilities, which reminds Joe of Fret Buzz Episode 38 with Joe Hamm of El Sistema. The guys talk about the business skills it takes to make a living playing music, from doing taxes to wearing multiple hats (teaching during the day and performing at night). Graham answers the burning question about how NYC musicians deal with getting show equipment to their gigs considering the obvious transportation difficulties. The answer: they often don't have to worry about it because so many venues have house drum kits and amps. Graham tells us about his plans for the future, including recording projects, more teaching, and staying in NYC for at least five more years. Late Sea https://www.lateseamusic.com/
This week we're talking to Anders Osborne about his new album, Buddha and the Blues, and his music and recovery. This is the Billboard article we mention in the interview. And Nick and RJ are back with the news. Send us comments and feedback via Facebook or Twitter, and please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. This week, we sat down with machineheart, a band based out of LA with strong ties to Tacoma, Washington. They gained popularity with covers of Katy Perry and The 1975, eventually breaking into Spotify’s Viral with their original song ‘Circles’ featuring Vancouver-based electronic artist Vanic. On the heels of their debut album, People Change, we discuss how the band came together, the toxicity of social media, Post Malone, the creative process, and more. This episode was recorded backstage during soundcheck at The Gramercy Theatre in NYC, so my apologies for any annoying guitars, drums, and clanking going on in the background. Personally, I think all of the noise adds to the aesthetic of the podcast. Definitely planned it that way. Please go check out machineheart on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. On this week’s episode of Auxoro: The Voice of Music, we sat down with Cautious Clay. He released his debut EP, Blood Type, in February of 2018, but the journey started long before. Cautious Clay grew up in Cleveland and was surrounded by the jazz community. He plays the flute and saxophone among other things, a true multi-instrumentalist. At George Washington University, he started making beats and posting remixes to SoundCloud. It was there, that Finneas, Billie Eilish’s brother, saw one of these remixes and reached out to Cautious Clay. Cautious Clay, Blackbear, and Astonomyy ended up being part of the first remix package of ‘Ocean Eyes’ by Billie Eilish back in 2015. Since then, Cautious Clay has made a lot of music, worked multiple day jobs, and recently quit those day jobs to pursue music full time. In October of 2018, NPR tapped Cautious Clay to perform for their coveted tiny desk concert series. Even if you don’t listen to Cautious Clay, or aren’t an avid music listener in general, this episode has a lot of insight into the overall process of creativity, the effect of religion on upbringing, competition, and other topics that span beyond music. This week, we sat down with Goody Grace at Auxoro HQ in Brooklyn before Goody's show at Baby's All Right later that night. Before I had even started Auxoro, a friend played me 'Two Shots' by Goody Grace in the car a few years ago. I've been an avid listener ever since and I'm glad we had the chance to have this conversation. Goody Grace hails from the Western Canadian province of Manitoba and moved to LA as a teenager. He embodies a unique ensemble, often wearing black, tucking t-shirts into jeans, and stays true to his style. In this episode, Goody speaks on his creative process, traveling with friend and fellow artist Gnash to play shows throughout the West Coast, his bond with Jesse Rutherford, The Shape of Water, and covering Johnny Cash. We hope you enjoy this conversation and don't forget to check out Goody Grace on Spotify, Apple Music, and any other streaming platform you may use. Thank you for listening.
