Notre Grand Invité Afrique nous emmène ce matin dans le désert nigérien, au nord de Tesker. C'est là qu'une équipe de scientifiques a découvert une nouvelle espèce de dinosaure, qui a vécu il y a 95 millions d'années. Découverte décrite dans la revue scientifique « Science » au mois de février. Son nom : Spinosaurus mirabilis. 12 mètres de long, un museau allongé et cet élément caractéristique : une grande crête sur la tête. Pour en parler, qui mieux que le paléontologue américain qui a dirigé l'expédition, en 2022 ? Paul Sereno, professeur à l'université de Chicago, répond aux questions de Magali Lagrange. RFI : Vous avez découvert une nouvelle espèce de dinosaure au Niger. Pouvez-vous nous dire à quoi ressemble le Spinosaurus mirabilis ? Paul Sereno : C'est un grand animal. Un grand prédateur avec des caractéristiques un peu particulières au niveau de la tête pour lui permettre d'attraper des poissons. Le Spinosaurus avait une grande épine dorsale. Ce qui fait surtout la spécificité de cette nouvelle espèce, c'est la crête qu'il avait sur la tête. Une crête vraiment spectaculaire, en forme de sabre courbé. C'est l'une des plus grandes jamais découvertes chez un dinosaure prédateur. Que savez vous de cette crête, servait-elle à quelque chose ? Nous pensons que sa crête était ornementale. Étant donnée sa position, juste au-dessus des yeux, il semble difficile qu'elle ait pu servir d'arme. Plusieurs d'entre elles ont aussi des bords un peu fragiles, et sont asymétriques. Toutes ces raisons nous font dire que c'était plutôt décoratif, comme on peut encore le voir chez certains oiseaux modernes. Y a-t-il d'autres dinosaures auxquels on peut le comparer ? Et bien, le Spinosaurus est vraiment à part. D'abord, on ne le trouve qu'en Europe, en Afrique et en Amérique du Sud. Ces dinosaures sont des prédateurs, mais ce sont aussi les mieux adaptés à une vie au bord de l'eau. Ce sont des bipèdes, comme d'autres espèces de dinosaures. Mais le Spinosaurus mirabilis, comme son cousin le Spinosaurus Aegypticus, a ses propres caractéristiques. Par exemple, ses dents s'imbriquent quand il ferme la mâchoire. Ça, c'est une spécificité pour attraper des poissons glissants dans les rivières et sur les berges. Comment réagit-on quand on découvre une nouvelle espèce de dinosaure ? Ça n'arrive pas tous les jours, quelle a été votre réaction quand vous avez compris ? Nous avons été surpris. Certains membres de l'équipe ont pleuré. Mais tous, nous étions euphoriques. C'est un moment exceptionnel, quand on travaille dans cette partie du désert, qu'on fait une découverte et qu'on se rend finalement compte de la nature de cette découverte. Avec nos moyens modernes, à l'ère du numérique, non seulement nous avons pu savoir exactement où nous nous trouvions. Mais nous avons aussi été capables de prendre des photos des ossements pour les assembler. C'est ce que nous avons fait. Et donc, on était là, au milieu du Sahara, à regarder ces images sur un ordinateur portable alimenté par un panneau solaire. C'est vrai que c'est un moment dont on se souviendra. Quand vous faites une mission, vous envoyez ce que vous trouvez aux États-Unis pour l'étudier. Ensuite, est-ce que vous renvoyez tout au Niger ? C'est ce que vous allez faire ? Renvoyer les fossiles de ce nouveau dinosaure et le reste au Niger après étude ? Oui, mais en plus de renvoyer les fossiles au Niger - d'ailleurs certains ossements du Spinosaurus sont déjà au Niger - nous avons lancé un grand projet pour monter un centre du patrimoine nigérien dans la meilleure université du pays, à Niamey. Il existe aussi des plans très détaillés pour créer deux musées au Niger. L'un en plein cœur de la capitale, pour raconter l'histoire des dinosaures africains et des populations anciennes qui ont peuplé le pays. L'autre à Agadez, dans le nord du Niger. C'est un projet qui suscite beaucoup d'enthousiasme ici. On dit que le désert nigérien est un cimetière de dinosaures. Y a-t-il encore beaucoup de choses à y découvrir ? Absolument. Nous avons visité de nombreux sites qui sont incroyables. Mais il y en a encore beaucoup d'autres à découvrir. Quand vous visitez le Sahara, vous avez la sensation de vous trouver sur une autre planète. C'est un sentiment merveilleux : celui d'être dans un lieu en pleine nature, où il n'y a pas de routes, où vous pouvez découvrir des choses, où personne n'a encore marché. Donc oui, il y aura encore beaucoup de découvertes. C'est pour ca que le Niger a besoin d'avoir ses propres archéologues, ses propres paléontologues, ses propres muséographes. Pour pouvoir conserver cet incroyable héritage et le présenter aux Nigériens, mais aussi aux Africains et au monde entier. El dinosaurio carnívoro más famoso es, sin ninguna duda, Tyrannosaurus rex. Menos conocido es que Tyrannosaurus no es el carnívoro más grande que ha pisado la tierra: ese honor le corresponde a Spinosaurus, que vivió en África a mediados del Cretácico, hace ahora 100 millones de años. Spinosaurus era un animal peculiar: su cuerpo era alargado en lugar de voluminoso, y su cabeza, también alargada, se parecía a la de un cocodrilo moderno. Es posible que estas adaptaciones tuvieran que ver con su técnica de caza, porque Spinosaurus se alimentaba fundamentalmente de peces: era un superespecialista que creció hasta ser el mayor carnívoro terrestre de la historia sólo a base de pescado. Scientists have officially described a brand new species of Spinosaurus — Spinosaurus mirabilis — from the Sahara Desert in Niger. This massive predatory dinosaur lived about 95 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous and may have hunted fish in shallow rivers like a giant prehistoric heron.What makes Spinosaurus mirabilis so unique is its huge scimitar-shaped head crest, which could have been brightly colored and used for display. Fossils discovered in 2019 and 2022 revealed multiple crests and skull fragments that confirmed this was a completely new species within the famous spinosaurid family.This discovery is particularly exciting because it's the first clear new species of Spinosaurus described in more than a century, and it may change how scientists think these dinosaurs lived and hunted. While the new material is exciting, the larger crest is not surprising given the species' known display features. The new locality in Niger, further inland than previous finds, suggests Spinosaurus may have followed rivers inland, similar to other water-affiliated animals. A new paper confirms long-held beliefs about spinosaur evolution, including sexual selection, wading behaviour, and multiple evolutionary phases. The discovery of a new rhabdodontid skull, with clear ceratopsian characteristics, suggests that some previously identified rhabdodontids were actually early ceratopsians. This finding supports the idea that ceratopsians were present in Europe during the Cretaceous, filling a gap in the fossil record. Apologies for audio quality - was a bit rushed!

Spinosaurus is one of the most famous and least understood dinosaurs of all time. New research and reconstructions reveal how fragmentary fossils, lost specimens and evolving science have shaped what we think we know about these strange, sail-backed predators.
In the Cretaceous Period (c.100 million years ago) Egypt and North Africa were radically different environments. With vast tidal flats and mangroves, and a shallow sea, the continent fostered numerous animal and plant species. Creatures like Paralititan (sauropods); the sprinting Deltadromeus; the infamous Spinosaurus; and the newcomer Tameryraptor. These have been preserved in the fossil record from Egypt and other countries in North Africa. I am delighted to report that Therizinosaurus lived in what is now Mongolia in Central Asia, in the Gobi Desert. 70 million years ago, the land wasn't a desert at all but a forest with multiple rivers and streams flowing through it. Lots of other dinosaurs and birds lived in the area, including a tyrannosaurid called Tarbosaurus that was probably the only predator big enough to kill Therizinosaurus. When the first Therizinosaurus fossils were discovered in the 1950s, they were initially thought to belong to a type of giant turtle. Later it was reclassified as a sauropod relation, not a turtle. These days, we know for sure it's not a turtle and we're pretty sure it's not anything like a sauropod. The Therizinosaurus fossils found so far are incomplete. All we have are some ribs, one hind foot, and mostly complete arms and hands. We don't have any parts of the skull or any vertebrae, so paleontologists still have a lot of questions about what Therizinosaurus looked like and how it lived, although we have more complete specimens of some of its close relations to help scientists make good guesses. Luckily we have its hands, because its claws are enormous. Therizinosaurus had claws bigger than any other dinosaur known. Therizinosaurus was a big dinosaur overall, with an estimated length of 33 feet, or 10 meters, although until a more complete specimen is discovered we can't know for sure how big it really was. It may have stood up to 16 feet tall, or 5 meters, and walked on its hind legs. It's classified as a theropod these days, a group that includes famous dinosaurs like T. rex and Spinosaurus, but it wasn't closely related to those big fast meat-eaters. Most paleontologists think Therizinosaurus ate plants, but again, we don't know for sure since we don't have any of its teeth to examine. Its closest relatives were herbivorous but its immediate ancestors were carnivorous. If Therizinosaurus was a plant-eater, why did it have such enormous claws? Its claws were seriously terrifying! Its arms were big and strong in general, measuring about 8 feet long, or 2.5 meters, including long, slender fingers, and the claws measured over three feet long! That's more than a meter long. If the claws were covered with a keratin sheath, which is probable, they would have been even longer when Therizinosaurus was alive. They were relatively thin and straight with a curve at the end. There are many reasons why an animal develops big claws. Predators need claws to help grab prey or tear meat into pieces, or an animal may need big claws to help it dig or climb trees. Claws are also great for defense. Some animals use claws to grab tree branches and bend them closer to the animal's mouth, which is something that giant ground sloths probably did, at least sometimes. The new study published in February 2023 examined the claws of Therizinosaurus and lots of other dinosaurs to learn how strong they were. The claws were 3D scanned, and then the scans were used in various models that measured the stress placed on each claw in various different activities. The study discovered that the claws of different dinosaurs were strong in different ways depending on what they were used for, which wasn't a surprise. What was a surprise was that Therizinosaurus's claws were weak no matter which model the scientists used. In other words, Therizinosaurus probably didn't use its claws to fight other dinosaurs unless it just had to, because they would break too easily. It wouldn't have dug with its claws or even used them to hook branches down closer to its mouth. As far as we can tell, its claws were basically useless. But obviously, Therizinosaurus used its claws for something or it wouldn't have evolved to have such gigantic claws.

Jill Decades is that was the Montessori US, and it wasn’t decades. It was 17 years. Dion Yeah, which is very nice decades, but also like, is that a shocking thing? No, it’s like, OK, they’re hidden. Jill Set at the start of the movie. Dion It’s like. It’s kind of like it’s kind of like, wow, would Jurassic World have progressed into that? Ohh, you come to see the dinosaurs in the cages too. Come see the freak show. Freak show dinosaurs come. See. The freak show. Jill Yeah, it was definitely giving phantom of the opera dinosaur vibes. It was like I showed the whole thing. Just. Love that they just played into the tropes right at the start there of the. Hapless idiot scientist who can’t do things right. Who does the little critical mistake even though they work in literally a research *******. Place and it’s their mistake that unleashes absolute hell across that. And I’m like, wow, if that was the security problem, like, that thing that that person did, they had way bigger problems. You know, at least they at least they had an actual corporate self sabotage moment in Jurassic Park. The first one where it’s like, ah, I’m doing this for money. It’s like, yeah, great. I understand that. Speaker 7 Yeah. Jill Yeah, where was BD Wong in this one? Quinny Yeah. Or or Dennis medrick. Dion Yeah, yeah. Surprising lack of BD Wong. In all of this, too, yeah, yeah. Are you seriously telling me that that character would not have cloned himself about 53 billion times because he’s the master of the cloning stuff and has been doing all of that? Like like I I’m the the Jurassic nerd who has gone and watched all of Camp Cretaceous and all of ******* chaos theory. The two Jurassic animated series. So yeah, yeah, I mean very well aware of how stupid the ******* storylines are. Dion Someone else? Quinny I’m. Dion The movie is this movie, this movie, not the movie. This movie established itself in the Jurassic World world by becoming a direct continuation from the Jurassic World Movie World. I know right where the dinosaurs have escaped from their captivity, which we saw in Dominion, and they’re kind of populating themselves out across and the and to causing chaos to the humans like humans have to deal with dinosaurs as a thing. But then I love that it did a smart thing in my brain which was to pull it all back towards the equator. Because they’re basically like, oh, dinosaurs are dying and they’re becoming a real pain in the **** like a dead dinosaur is quite annoying and everyone’s bored with them because they’re just a pain. They just cause traffic gridlock when they die, and they can only really exist around the equator, where it’s a more oxygen rich and kind of prehistoric era like like area where it. There. More sustainable life. Expectancy. So dinosaurs basically exist around the yeah, dinosaurs basically exist around the equator and and you know people kind of forgotten about them except for the corporations which want to make drugs, drugs, drugs from dinosaurs, even though technically no one’s allowed to go near the dinosaurs. Quinny It does vaguely make sense. Dion It’s like great. It’s like a no go zone. Is there any patrols or anyone managing that? No, we just say don’t go. Speaker And people will not go. Quinny Wait a minute. Like if it’s the entire ring of the equator, that’s quite a lot of travel, like space to try and. Manage. Yeah, but I mean. Dion There’s not lots of stuff there. A little bit. Speaker You know. Quinny Like I don’t know how long the equator is, but I imagine that it’s quite mountain. Jill And it goes right around the middle of the. World. Yeah, covers land and sea. Dion Well, anyway, there’s lots of, you know, research islands and stuff like extra research islands. I also love that it’s like, oh, we have thousands of these islands around the equator. Cool. There’s more research places. I’m like, really. Speaker Yeah. Jill They gave themselves a problem and they gave themselves a very easy way to solve it. Quinny Yeah. Dion Yeah, it’s like and. But I looked at this, this island, and I’m like, man, that that looks even more like more technology and infrastructure went into that island than the park. So now I understand, I feel like ohh, that’s why they got out of the park cause they just didn’t give a ****. Whereas in this one, I was like, oh, this feels like it was. It had more money as could you said. To me, yesterday spared no expense, but we didn’t see that in Jurassic Park in the 1st. No, we didn’t see the spared no expense. It felt like it was, but it wasn’t. And now look at this one. I was like, wow, they’ve they’ve done so much more. There’s, like, helipads and geothermal energy and a whole bunch of things in there. He keeps running like everyone else is like, oh, finally, we made it to the beach. There’s no more dinosaurs, and he just keeps running. Going. Nope. Nope. And phebus amphibious, like and keeps running into there. And I like that. And someone kind of takes a beat on the beach. And you’re looking at the back, and it’s kind of rocks. Speaker Hmm. Quinny Yep. Dion Everywhere and stuff. And then suddenly one of those ones rolls over. Because it’s been lying on the beach flat. So you didn’t see this? The big sail, Finn. And it’s terrifying because you realize. Ohh ****. They’re on the beach already and everyone’s just kind of relaxing and like breathing heavy and going. Oh my God, I can’t. And one rolls over and kind of like slides around. And you’re like. Holy ****, that’s gonna get that person that’s right there. And then they take a beat and it doesn’t for some reason. Another one comes from somewhere. Else to do it and. Then they just **** ***. Yeah, like they see a person dying like ohh no, that happened anyway. Alright, that’s very sad. We should go. And it’s like they would be hunting you. Jill There were a couple of moments that were giving like ohh this is alien vibes. This would work perfectly if they just let into the horror aspect and then they completely swerve the other direction and. Dion Yeah. Yeah, this is. Jill Basically, make a really kid friendly film. Dion Yeah, there’s there’s no horror in this and I think that’s one. Of. The things Queen you’re saying Camp Cretaceous was a. A good TV show. It feels like they they wanted that audience to come and see and they couldn’t get too scary. Quinny Yeah. Well, and the and the stupid thing is in in Camp Cretaceous and chaos theory, they do, you know, have enough actual threat in there like dinosaurs do, eat people and ****. You just don’t see it. Quinny World, where there’s dinosaurs and **** like that. And it’s like, yeah, no undo all of that. Take them out of society so that society just doesn’t care about them and we’re going to put them in a small band in the middle of the of the planet. Dion Yep, we’ve gone across the world to come all the way back around. No back to islands in the Pacific. Yeah, yeah. Speaker Yeah. Dion Cool. Quinny Is Scarlett your handsome good. Jill She’s adequate. Dion You know what I gotta say, all the cast is great because, like they, they are trying very hard. Like they’re all likable. I liked. Wait. OK, let me separate this out. All of the cast from the mercenary side. Like the the you get introduced straight away. They’re all actually quite likable, you know. They’re stereotyped out, so you know who’s who to follow. You know, you got the boat, captain. You got the the mercenary. You got the evil creepy guy. Like it’s very aliens. Easy to follow. It’s like predator. I think I explained that one. It’s like. In the first predator film, by the time they’re on the helicopter going out to the mission, you have identified exactly the difference between all of them and how they work. So yeah, it’s a good way to introduce a cast of different people. Same kind of thing here, here’s all the cast and then they. Had. A boat full of family. That you hate. Like all of them are *****, pretty much or. Bless. Jill Yeah, they were pointless, they. Dion They’re all. Jill Were fine, but they were. Pointless. Dion Yeah, fine. But they’re pointless. And then they mix them up. And I was like, this is just irritating and the most irritating thing I think I found about it was after they, their boat crashes, they split them up again to the exact same groups. And that is dumb. Like I mean you presented you, you could have at least given half the mercenaries to the family and half the family to the mercenaries. Speaker Hmm. Jill If you had mixed them up. Then it’s like, OK, how do we now work with what we’ve got to complete the mission that we have to do, but also get you back safely to get? Dion Because the family’s just trying to get off the island and the mercenaries just default back to Ohh well, they’re dead. We’ll. Speaker 7 And leave the island. Dion Just go and get the blood we need. Jill Yeah. They’re like, oh, maybe they’ll need us at that helipad that we told. Them about who knows. Dion Yeah, yeah. Well, they went to the Avia and they were like, Oh my God, there’s an aviary. That was scary. And then the eating people off the off the, the the resort in Jurassic World that’s also terrifying. In this one it’s just kind. Of like. Quinny Ohh Margarita man being picked up. I love that. It was great. Dion Yeah, like all of that kind of stuff. That was this one just kind of felt like ohh no, they got their thing for the thing and now they’ve got their thing, OK. Then they disappear. It’s like, great, now bird is gone and then have to. Speaker Yeah. Dion Worry about bird anymore. Jill Yeah. Yeah, they’re. Like, oh, so once we complete that mission, how do we get off the island? And Scarjo says, Ohh well, there’s a helicopter that I prepared earlier. It would be here at dusk on the second day and it will hover for two minutes precisely. Can I just say they’re in a field with absolutely nothing, and then they turn slightly and here are these big **** *** dinosaurs, and then they turn around just a little bit more. And then there’s like 100 of them. Speaker Why? Speaker 8 It is cold. Dion Yeah, I mean it plays. It plays exactly into that thing which has been established in the previous ones. It’s like do not go into the long grass. That’s where the velociraptors hunt. And you go in, they’re walking in there like, oh, great. We’re finally getting to the action edit. And it’s just ******* giant ones. It just happened to be there. Jill Yeah, there’s nothing. Ohh, this is fantastic. Ohh wait. Hang on. Ohh, look at that big one. Speaker 7 Another big one. But it is just the fact that there are these two titanosaurus and they just curl like twist sort of twist their necks like ******* snakes. They just do that. Jill Yes, they’re just making it out. They’re making. Quinny Out they’re making. Dion And he’s and. And he’s putting his hand on it. And I’m like, that is the worst part of the reason right there. There is the awkward guy just trying. To get involved. Well, these two are like, what are you doing? Speaker 7 Getting in the middle of the. Jill Well, just I’m just gonna get scratching here. Oh, no. OK. Dion Yeah, yeah, yeah. Dion I also love how they celebrate every time they get a vial they have they have a they’re like a, a a briefcase full of like, which has space for three vials of blood that that they kind of are using as the as the the progress meter for the game that is this movie. And they all get really excited about harvesting this blood and it’s. Like. You know that you’re the bad guys, right? You’re the bad people. You’re like in Jen from the second movie. You. Quinny Know. So is there a point where like and and this is me not having seen it. OK, thank you. Is is there a moment where the the the obviously not great. Jill There’s no point. Speaker 1 There is no point. Quinny And the guy at the start turns on them. And of course, OK, just I just just checking. Of course he’s. Speaker 7 Ohh yes, very early. Very early in the movie. Your Hansen’s face just kind of pasted onto it halfway up a Cliff or something like that. Not footage, not shots, anything like that. And there is a design in one of them that I went. The **** is that? It has a beaky kind of face, but it looks a bit like a Raptor. Jill Yeah, that’s the new kitchen. Dinosaur. (0:07:28) Codey: And he is just so chill, and just trots right up in purrs (0:07:32) Codey: and meows, and he just wanted food. (0:07:34) Codey: So I snagged him. (0:08:36) Codey: and they said that any time they’ve brought a cat that is injured or has something wrong with it to her and been like, “Hey, is this your cat?” (0:08:44) Codey: Even if they know it’s her cat, she’ll still say, “That’s not my cat.” (0:08:46) Codey: So they were like, “Don’t worry about it. Just keep trying to find him a good home.” (0:08:52) Codey: So she also doesn’t believe in spaying and neutering. (0:08:56) Codey: So it’s just a never-ending cycle. (0:15:02) Codey: So it sounds- I haven’t played this but from what it says to me what this sounds like is they had different cafes or different workstations or cafe stations. (0:15:24) Codey: Who’s just like absolutely overloaded and then another one is really not that busy. So this is one that so Ichiban Kasuga is the character. This is what I was just looking at (0:28:28) Codey: He’s a kid he’s the character in a game a yakuza game (0:28:32) Codey: and (0:28:34) Codey: That that game franchise is owned by Sega (0:28:39) Codey: Toshi hero Nagoshi and Sega and so because people have been commenting (0:28:44) Codey: They and they mentioned this in their video that people have been commenting about how like this limited availability thing (0:28:50) Codey: and how it seems kind of like it’s meant to stir up FOMO because (0:28:55) Codey: they only release some of the DLCs for a limited amount of time and (0:28:59) Codey: So it like makes you have to buy it during that time and the developer of David Iver said that is not the intention (0:29:07) Codey: the intention (0:29:09) Codey: For Sega is to they said the limited availability quote (0:29:14) Codey: That kind of approach is sometimes requested by large the large IP holders to help protect the value (0:29:20) Codey: Of their IP (0:29:22) Codey: so it’s the Sega people basically trying to (0:29:28) Codey: Protect the value of the IP of this character (0:29:32) Al: Is capitalism speak? (0:36:04) Codey: We don’t have a habitat for local pollinators and native pollinators, so they don’t live near our farms anymore because we just do this monoculture and we spray all these pesticides. (0:36:14) Codey: So the natives aren’t there anymore, they can’t do the pollinating anymore, so we have to bring in these honeybees. (0:36:20) Codey: But honeybees are the equivalent of a chicken. (0:36:24) Codey: It’s like if we held up a chicken and said, “Let’s save the endangered birds.” (0:36:34) Codey: That is not… Yes, I agree with what you’re saying, but that is not an endangered… That’s not even a native bird. (0:36:44) Codey: No. So in the United States, it’s really frustrating. I want to see more stuff about native bees, which is one of the reasons I super loved, Apico and Elle, adding in native bees. I don’t even think there was a tutorial in the way that there is now. And so you built a (0:40:47) Codey: house. You could go into the mines. The mines and the dungeon were one in the same. So there or at (0:40:56) Codey: least I had not encountered anything that was explicitly different. So now they are very (0:41:02) Codey: different. There are multiple dungeons. And the mines themselves. (0:41:11) Codey: The mines were about as difficult as they are now. If not, I think they might have been a little bit (0:41:18) Codey: more difficult because it was really hard. Both. I mean, because before it was the mines and the (0:41:18) Al: Do you mean the dungeon? (0:41:24) Codey: dungeon. So it was like all in one. But yeah, you just kind of get, you know, there’s a spawning (0:41:31) Codey: point for the baddies. They come out, they overwhelm you super fast. I think maybe there (0:41:38) Codey: there was, I guess there still is a cool down for consuming. (0:41:40) Codey: Things, um, though now consuming things doesn’t just fill your health. (0:41:47) Codey: It’s just kind of like Minecraft where it fills your fullness. (0:41:51) Codey: And when you’re full, full, then your health auto-regenerates. (0:41:53) Al: Depends which one it is. So the cooked meat from the deer, it heals you. (0:41:56) Codey: Yeah. (0:41:59) Codey: Yeah. (0:41:59) Codey: There weren’t deer last time. (0:42:02) Codey: Um, it was pretty basic. (0:42:04) Codey: And then there was one, uh, addition to the Island that you. (0:42:10) Codey: Could I think unlock. (0:42:32) Codey: Um, I also don’t think there was really like the story. (0:42:35) Codey: So when you play the game now, it has more of the story. (0:42:38) Codey: It was really just the bare bones. (0:42:41) Codey: There was farming, um, and there was crafting and stuff, but they have, they (0:42:45) Codey: fleshed it out so much more and I’m, it’s really gratifying to see where the game (0:42:50) Codey: has gone, um, and yeah, I think that’s where I’ll pause the, my, my two (0:42:57) Codey: cents about the second harvest. (0:42:58) Al: to start with. OK, cool. Yeah, OK, so I guess to give people a quick overview, just in case (0:43:06) Al: you haven’t listened to the original episode or you’ve forgotten or whatever, it’s a survival (0:43:12) Al: game. You are a character, you come to an island and you have to survive, you have to (0:43:20) Al: build a house, you have to do all these things. And then there’s obviously, as Cody mentioned, (0:43:25) Al: There’s a story to that. (0:43:28) Al: Yeah, is that enough of a quick overview of what the game is in and of itself? (0:43:34) Codey: Yes, yeah, so it’s like a survival game, but there are these creatures that you learn in the beginning intro part are used to be people, but they were corrupted by this. (0:43:50) Codey: What do they call it a light stone or something? It’s like a, but it’s a resource and they got corrupted by it and now they’re these monster things, which changes my morality a little bit. (0:44:04) Codey: I’m like, Oh, no, like, what if later on down the line there’s you find like a cure and then you’ve killed thousands of these things. (0:44:14) Al: If you don’t kill them, they’ll kill you. (0:44:16) Codey: You’re right. They will. They kind of look I really love the art for them as well. There’s they get kind of Demi Gorgon esque like from. (0:44:26) Al: I did notice that one was very much like the demagogue and from Stranger Things. (0:44:28) Codey: Mm-hmm, stranger things, yeah. (0:44:34) Codey: Um, and it is multiplayer. (0:44:35) Codey: So you can play with one to eight players, which is super nice. (0:44:39) Codey: Um, able to play with your friends. (0:44:41) Codey: Um, and there’s a skill tree and there’s a map. (0:44:46) Codey: I don’t know. (0:44:46) Codey: It’s, it, it’s, it has a lot of potential. (0:44:50) Codey: Like it’s a super open world. (0:44:52) Codey: You can really build it how you want it. (0:44:56) Al: Yeah, okay, so let’s before we get into the game proper. I want to do my complaining section because (0:45:02) Codey: - Yeah, I will second some of your complaints. (0:45:04) Al: So let me get my list and let me pause the game and get back to my list (0:45:08) Codey: - Yeah, stop playing the game while you’re… (0:45:09) Al: so controller support in this game is (0:45:12) Al: Absolutely dreadful. It is just so bad (0:45:15) Al: So when I first opened it when the when the when it first entered early access over three years ago (0:45:20) Al: It had no controller support and so basically just didn’t work on the steam deck at all. Okay, fine. Sure (0:45:26) Al: Whatever. It’s early access. I think that you should have controller support from the start, but whatever fine. I’ll come back later (0:45:31) Al: I came back later and control support does exist, but it is very bare bones and very terrible (0:45:39) Al: When I loaded up the game on my steam deck (0:45:42) Al: You can’t start a game with the controller (0:45:45) Al: There’s like certain buttons that you can’t even highlight using the controller and select (0:45:48) Codey: » Yeah. (0:45:51) Al: Um, and then even when you’re in the game, there’s other things like that. (0:45:54) Al: Like you can’t. (0:45:56) Al: Sleep in that you can’t click the sleep button on a bed without (0:46:00) Al: using the touchscreen stuff like that. (0:46:03) Al: Like really basic stuff that you need to do. (0:46:05) Al: Like, I don’t think a single person, uh, who was on the team, uh, tested this (0:46:11) Al: from like, actually tested controller support. (0:46:14) Al: I think they, they built in some controller support and they went, yeah, (0:46:19) Al: that’s good enough. (0:46:19) Al: That’ll stop people complaining. (0:46:21) Al: Spoiler alert, it won’t. (0:46:23) Al: Um, I honestly think it’s (0:46:26) Al: absolutely dreadful. Like, I think that if you only play games on the Steam Deck, (0:46:31) Al: or if you only play games with the controller, do not buy this game. That’s it. I cannot (0:46:38) Al: legitimately say that anybody who does that can play the game. Like, just don’t do it. (0:46:45) Al: I tried so hard, and I maybe got through like two hours on the Steam Deck before I just broke down (0:46:52) Al: and load it up on my computer and it’s (0:46:56) Al: so much better.
