Recorded live at the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival 2026, Iszi Lawrence and Dr Dave Hone tackle questions from the audience on everything from Spinosaurus salt glands and Jurassic World to feathered pterosaurs, Troodon taxonomy, AI in palaeontology and where the next great dinosaur discovery might be hiding. Questions featured in this episode include: • Could pterosaurs perch, hover or even fly backwards? • Did Spinosaurus have salt glands? • Has the Jurassic World franchise helped or harmed public understanding of dinosaurs? • Should amateur fossil collecting be restricted? • Is Troodon formosus valid again? • Do you need a PhD to work in palaeontology? • How little fossil material is needed to name a new species? • What made Troodon teeth so unusual? • What prehistoric animal would Dave and Iszi dress up as? • Has anyone tried reconstructing pterosaur calls? • Is AI useful in palaeontology? • Are pterosaur pycnofibres really feathers? • Why are Triassic ornithischian fossils so rare? • Where might the next big dinosaur discovery come from? • Have Dave or Iszi found any fossils recently?  Support Terrible Lizards on Patreon: https://patreon.com/terriblelizards Iszi Lawrence NEW audiobooks (release date: 25-06-26) https://www.audible.co.uk/author/Iszi-Lawrence/B0865T388B https://www.bloomsbury.com/ca/domesday-cows-9781801999274/ Find out more about the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival: https://fossilfestival.com/ Watch this episode on youtube  (Search iszitube) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lujwm8nrvRA

Découverte d'une nouvelle espèce de dinosaure au Niger: «C'est un moment dont on se souviendra»

Invité Afrique

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 4, 2026 4:29

This massive predatory dinosaur lived about 95 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous and may have hunted fish in shallow rivers like a giant prehistoric heron. What makes Spinosaurus mirabilis so unique is its huge scimitar-shaped head crest, which could have been brightly colored and used for display. Fossils discovered in 2019 and 2022 revealed multiple crests and skull fragments that confirmed this was a completely new species within the famous spinosaurid family. This discovery is particularly exciting because it's the first clear new species of Spinosaurus described in more than a century, and it may change how scientists think these dinosaurs lived and hunted. Instead of being fully aquatic predators, this species may have been a semi-aquatic wader stalking fish in inland river systems deep in the Sahara. In this video we break down the discovery, the fossils, and what Spinosaurus mirabilis tells us about the evolution of spinosaurs.

George, fascinated by circuits and mechanics, loved experimenting with electronics and machines. In 1954, he patented the first programmable robotic arm, a machine that could move objects automatically by following coded instructions. Working with engineer Joseph Engelberger, he built Unimate, the world's first industrial robot. In 1961, it was put to work in a car factory, handling hot metal parts and doing dangerous jobs that once put people at risk. Devol's invention changed manufacturing forever and helped pave the way for the robots we use today.Links from the Show:Related The STEM Space Podcast Episodes 105. While the new material is exciting, the larger crest is not surprising given the species' known display features. The new locality in Niger, further inland than previous finds, suggests Spinosaurus may have followed rivers inland, similar to other water-affiliated animals. A new paper confirms long-held beliefs about spinosaur evolution, including sexual selection, wading behaviour, and multiple evolutionary phases. The discovery of a new rhabdodontid skull, with clear ceratopsian characteristics, suggests that some previously identified rhabdodontids were actually early ceratopsians. This finding supports the idea that ceratopsians were present in Europe during the Cretaceous, filling a gap in the fossil record. Apologies for audio quality - was a bit rushed!

In the Cretaceous Period (c.100 million years ago) Egypt and North Africa were radically different environments. With vast tidal flats and mangroves, and a shallow sea, the continent fostered numerous animal and plant species. Creatures like Paralititan (sauropods); the sprinting Deltadromeus; the infamous Spinosaurus; and the newcomer Tameryraptor. These have been preserved in the fossil record from Egypt and other countries in North Africa. Further reading: Study: Giant Therizinosaurs Used Their Meter-Long, Sickle-Like Claws for Display Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. I am delighted to report that Therizinosaurus lived in what is now Mongolia in Central Asia, in the Gobi Desert. 70 million years ago, the land wasn't a desert at all but a forest with multiple rivers and streams flowing through it. Lots of other dinosaurs and birds lived in the area, including a tyrannosaurid called Tarbosaurus that was probably the only predator big enough to kill Therizinosaurus. When the first Therizinosaurus fossils were discovered in the 1950s, they were initially thought to belong to a type of giant turtle. Later it was reclassified as a sauropod relation, not a turtle. These days, we know for sure it's not a turtle and we're pretty sure it's not anything like a sauropod. The Therizinosaurus fossils found so far are incomplete. All we have are some ribs, one hind foot, and mostly complete arms and hands. We don't have any parts of the skull or any vertebrae, so paleontologists still have a lot of questions about what Therizinosaurus looked like and how it lived, although we have more complete specimens of some of its close relations to help scientists make good guesses. Luckily we have its hands, because its claws are enormous. Therizinosaurus had claws bigger than any other dinosaur known. Therizinosaurus was a big dinosaur overall, with an estimated length of 33 feet, or 10 meters, although until a more complete specimen is discovered we can't know for sure how big it really was. It may have stood up to 16 feet tall, or 5 meters, and walked on its hind legs. It's classified as a theropod these days, a group that includes famous dinosaurs like T. rex and Spinosaurus, but it wasn't closely related to those big fast meat-eaters. Most paleontologists think Therizinosaurus ate plants, but again, we don't know for sure since we don't have any of its teeth to examine. Its closest relatives were herbivorous but its immediate ancestors were carnivorous. If Therizinosaurus was a plant-eater, why did it have such enormous claws? Its claws were seriously terrifying! Its arms were big and strong in general, measuring about 8 feet long, or 2.5 meters, including long, slender fingers, and the claws measured over three feet long! That's more than a meter long. If the claws were covered with a keratin sheath, which is probable, they would have been even longer when Therizinosaurus was alive. They were relatively thin and straight with a curve at the end. There are many reasons why an animal develops big claws. Predators need claws to help grab prey or tear meat into pieces, or an animal may need big claws to help it dig or climb trees. Claws are also great for defense. Some animals use claws to grab tree branches and bend them closer to the animal's mouth, which is something that giant ground sloths probably did, at least sometimes. The new study published in February 2023 examined the claws of Therizinosaurus and lots of other dinosaurs to learn how strong they were. The claws were 3D scanned, and then the scans were used in various models that measured the stress placed on each claw in various different activities. The study discovered that the claws of different dinosaurs were strong in different ways depending on what they were used for, which wasn't a surprise. What was a surprise was that Therizinosaurus's claws were weak no matter which model the scientists used. In other words, Therizinosaurus probably didn't use its claws to fight other dinosaurs unless it just had to, because they would break too easily. It wouldn't have dug with its claws or even used them to hook branches down closer to its mouth. As far as we can tell, its claws were basically useless. But obviously, Therizinosaurus used its claws for something or it wouldn't have evolved to have such gigantic claws.

Jurassic World: Rebirth For a franchise that started with a single book and then a begrudging sequel, the fact that we are now 7 Films, two sub-titles, two Netflix animated shows and numerous games deep, tells us a lot about the state of the entertainment industry… (rather than the quality of that first book.) We have moved past the Jurassic park, beyond even the Jurassic World… we are now living in a post Jurassic planet. So if this film a true rebirth of a franchise, or the should this egg have been left in the incubator a bit longer. Dion and Jill have seen this weeks film, but Quinny is definitely here for emotional support and colour commentary. https://youtu.be/1AGTMry5nSc As always, a gigantosaursus sized thank-you to the dinosaurs and the mercenaries who love them, who join in with the conversation on the Twitch stream, live each Tuesday (or wednesday) night at 7:30pm AEDT. And an especially huge thanks to any of the slutty glasses wearing scientists who are kind enough to support us by leaving thier fossils in our jar via Ko-Fi, or subscribing on twitch… every bit helps us to keep the fences electrified and the boat fueled up… or it just pays for hosting…) If you feel so inclined drop us a sub we really love them, The more subby mc-sub-faces we get, the more Emotes You get! https://youtu.be/jan5CFWs9ic?si=wCPlEDf35P3owkWB WE WANT YOUR FEEDBACK! You don’t wait to see the transcription of this.  Dion  Uh, uh hello going to the table. Listen, tonight we’re talking. Billy and the Montessori. Yes, that’s right. Jurassic World rebirth. Let’s go and say hello. Tell me your dinosaur name, Connie.  Quinny  Rusty, Durkins, Liam and someone else asaurus.  Dion  Rusty jerkins. You didn’t think about this hard enough, Jill, do you have a dinosaur name?  Quinny  I don’t know.  Jill  I’m a jealous sore.  Dion  I’m jealous, though. There you go very simply done.  Quinny  Ohh OK I thought I was trying to do the actual like thing. No, right. OK, I’m just I’m.  Dion  A Quinn playdon.  Quinny  Hang on.  Jill  Like it?  Dion  That’s where I gotta.  Quinny  Call Quinn flygon. I’m down for being a Quinn flygon.  Dion  Yeah. Or Quinn Claudon or something.  Quinny  Quinn play.  Dion  Docus yeah, yeah.  Quinny  Yeah, I I like being a quintillus.  Speaker  Yep.  Jill  Phenolic quinoa. Quinoa.  Quinny  Quinolines quinolines Rex. But not locusts cause **** locusts cause that was stupid, yeah.  Dion  ******** cause. Yeah.  Quinny  Sorry, I I. Love that we tonight we’re talking about Jurassic World rebirth. Yeah, the chat is currently just concerned about the Superman shit that we watched. Last night.  Speaker  Usually.  Speaker 7  We’ll get to that next week.  Dion  Yeah. Yeah, next.  Quinny  Week we will we will talk. About Superman and the real dog. Yeah. Next week? Yeah.  Dion  We’re not, we’re. Talking about the other summer blockbuster of the season by Universal Pictures. That’s right, Jurassic is not finished yet. We’re having another crack at it. The 7th ******* film in the franchise is out. And for your watching viewing Dino pleasure.  Quinny  Hmm. And Speaking of a real dog, let’s talk about this.  Dion  Donald, pleasure.  Speaker  oh Wow. Wow.  Dion  Yes, it kind of does.  Quinny  Yeah, I I I I’m gonna have to. Sorry, you go down.  Dion  No, no, you’re on, Gifford.  Quinny  I was just gonna say I have to put my hands up to it. I haven’t been able to watch this film. I have seen clips of it I have. I have been given a a wonderful description from Dion as to what the film essentially was about.  Dion  A rapid fire blow by blow.  Quinny  Yeah. Yeah, but yeah, I I haven’t been able to watch the film yet, so I’m at a certain point in time. I may even have to skip out for spoilers, or I may not bother. I don’t know.  Dion  Don’t even bother. I won’t even go there. It can’t be that sort of thing. Yeah.  Quinny  Right.  Dion  And I mean, if you’re not for anyone in the chat, and who? Casper. Casper. Hello, Casper. You. We. You. You’re like. I haven’t seen Dominion. Guess what? Don’t worry. This is a brand new. Yes. Because it went. No, no. We’ve finished those stories now, and we’re gonna start a whole new thing with a whole new team of lovable people that may or may not get eaten.  Quinny  I guess.  Speaker 7  Doesn’t matter. Yeah.  Quinny  Yes, this, this, this new reboot trilogy thing. I don’t know if it’s gonna be a trilogy. Who knows? Is entirely Chris Pratt bless.  Dion  Unfortunately, it seems to have done fairly good bank, so there’s probably gonna be a sequel.  Quinny  How many Jurassic films? Until they just completely have run out of anything interesting to say about dinosaurs.  Speaker  Right.  Dion  Yep.  Quinny  I understand. I mean, we have hit the bottom of the.  Dion  Well, what? Well. They seem to be they see they seem to. Be re digging the well.  Quinny  Well, this is Jurassic World.  Dion  Just next door. Yeah, look. OK.  Quinny  Like I don’t know how to. Do this anymore. Todd.  Dion  It’s difficult. I’m trying actually trying to think, OK, what sort of, uh, freaking accent does queen have to do this opposite? Because we got to get the synopsis out of the way. What is like in Jurassic World rebirth all about? You know, is it Scarlett Johansson giving birth to a dinosaur? No, it’s not. It’s got nothing to.  Quinny  OK, it’s not that right? No, because that would have been a very interesting and strange film.  Dion  Do with.  Speaker  Dion  Is it Ian Malcolm waking up to a Velociraptor in his bed? Allah Jurassic World 3. Or was it 2? I can’t remember. There was literally that bit. Where’s Malcolm? Malcolm.  Jill  Three, it was him and the daughter that went back to.  Dion  Yeah, I think. 3.  Jill  The.  Dion  Island in the circle? That’s right. But that could have been anyway. Yeah, anyway.  Quinny  Sorry, just to go back, Dominion was the one that included most of like a bunch of the original Jurassic Park cast, wasn’t it? Yes.  Dion  Yes.  Jill  That is the crossover 1.  Quinny  Yeah, right, that was.  Speaker  Yeah.  Quinny  The the X-Men that is the future 1st.  Speaker 7  Yes, yes it was.  Dion  Yeah, yeah, the old and the new coming together to fight dinosaurs again. Yeah. Fight, ******* Jurassic locust.  Quinny  Locusts. Yeah, not even dinosaurs. ******* locusts. I remember that part about Dominion being really ****.  Dion  But this one.  Jill  Yeah. And I had the evil Tom Cook that was. Selling the dinosaurs or something, right?  Dion  Ohh look, there’s always an evil scientist trying to profit from the dinosaurs. That’s the that’s the whole point. And in this one guess what? You’re not alone. It’s evil scientist trying to profit from the dinosaurs through corporate.  Speaker  Right.  Quinny  So you don’t need me to do this anymore.  Dion  Hey, go right ahead, man. I don’t even have any background music for you. I just have. I can just do dinosaur. Creams in the background.  Quinny  Hey. Wow. Yeah. Yeah. So, Zora Bennett. Yeah. Like she leads a team of skilled operatives to the most dangerous Wow place on Earth. I’m not. That’s meant to be a, me and Malcolm and it’s. Feeling miserable.  Dion  I know I was kind of like.  Speaker 7  Sure. That’s what you were doing.  Quinny  Yeah, I was like, yeah, no, I I realized I was not in a gold blooming of enough. No, couldn’t do it just so I’m just gonna do it as me moves to Christian.  Dion  Christopher Walken for fun. Why not?  Quinny  It was heading towards Christopher Morgan. Well, Dinos. He’s a team. No, I’m. I’m apparently not in a place where I could do stupid voices right now. Something has broken in me. Thanks to COVID, I’m pretty sure 15 of my 27 elves that live inside me. Are dead.  Jill  No.  Dion  This is just becoming horrifying. Please continue this, not this. As quickly as that.  Quinny  Yes, it is. OK. Zora Bennett. Yeah, zora. That is her name. Leads a team of skilled operatives to the most dangerous place on Earth. An island research facility for the original Jurassic Park. 1 of 27,000 island research. Facilities for the original Jurassic Park, apparently. Yeah. Their mission is to secure genetic material from dinosaurs, not in the way you’re thinking. Whose DNA can provide life saving benefits to mankind as the top secret expedition becomes more and more risky, they soon make a sinister, shocking discovery that’s been hidden from the world for decades. There you go.  Dion  I I love that synopsis. I still have no idea what the sinister and shocking discovery that’s been hidden.  Quinny  Yeah.  Dion  From the world for.  Jill  Decades is that was the Montessori US, and it wasn’t decades. It was 17 years.  Dion  Yeah, which is very nice decades, but also like, is that a shocking thing? No, it’s like, OK, they’re hidden.  Jill  Set at the start of the movie.  Dion  It’s like. It’s kind of like it’s kind of like, wow, would Jurassic World have progressed into that? Ohh, you come to see the dinosaurs in the cages too. Come see the freak show. Freak show dinosaurs come. See. The freak show.  Jill  Yeah, it was definitely giving phantom of the opera dinosaur vibes. It was like I showed the whole thing. Just. Yeah, we’ll wait until the end. Yeah.  Speaker  Yeah.  Speaker 7  It’s just like. Yeah.  Speaker  Yeah.  Quinny  I’m speaking Elephant Man and dinosaurs.  Dion  Yeah. Yeah, really. And also I. Love that they just played into the tropes right at the start there of the. Hapless idiot scientist who can’t do things right. Who does the little critical mistake even though they work in literally a research *******. Place and it’s their mistake that unleashes absolute hell across that. And I’m like, wow, if that was the security problem, like, that thing that that person did, they had way bigger problems. You know, at least they at least they had an actual corporate self sabotage moment in Jurassic Park. The first one where it’s like, ah, I’m doing this for money. It’s like, yeah, great. I understand that.  Speaker 7  Yeah.  Jill  Yeah, where was BD Wong in this one?  Quinny  Yeah. Or or Dennis medrick.  Dion  Yeah, yeah. Surprising lack of BD Wong. In all of this, too, yeah, yeah.  Quinny  It’s. I’m pretty sure he died at. The end of the last one, didn’t he?  Jill  Probably. Maybe.  Dion  You’re not like, are you? Are you? Are you seriously telling me that that character would not have cloned himself about 53 billion times because he’s the master of the cloning stuff and has been doing all of that? And he’s like, you’re gonna make like 50 of.  Jill  Yeah, exactly.  Quinny  Yeah, I have. I’m not entirely sure that may or may not have been an actual plot point from. The animated series. Like like I I’m the the Jurassic nerd who has gone and watched all of Camp Cretaceous and all of ******* chaos theory. The two Jurassic animated series. So yeah, yeah, I mean very well aware of how stupid the ******* storylines are.  Dion  Someone else?  Quinny  I’m.  Dion  The movie is this movie, this movie, not the movie. This movie established itself in the Jurassic World world by becoming a direct continuation from the Jurassic World Movie World. I know right where the dinosaurs have escaped from their captivity, which we saw in Dominion, and they’re kind of populating themselves out across and the and to causing chaos to the humans like humans have to deal with dinosaurs as a thing. But then I love that it did a smart thing in my brain which was to pull it all back towards the equator. Because they’re basically like, oh, dinosaurs are dying and they’re becoming a real pain in the **** like a dead dinosaur is quite annoying and everyone’s bored with them because they’re just a pain. They just cause traffic gridlock when they die, and they can only really exist around the equator, where it’s a more oxygen rich and kind of prehistoric era like like area where it. There. More sustainable life. Expectancy. So dinosaurs basically exist around the yeah, dinosaurs basically exist around the equator and and you know people kind of forgotten about them except for the corporations which want to make drugs, drugs, drugs from dinosaurs, even though technically no one’s allowed to go near the dinosaurs.  Quinny  It does vaguely make sense.  Dion  It’s like great. It’s like a no go zone. Is there any patrols or anyone managing that? No, we just say don’t go.  Speaker  And people will not go.  Quinny  Wait a minute. Like if it’s the entire ring of the equator, that’s quite a lot of travel, like space to try and. Manage. Yeah, but I mean.  Dion  There’s not lots of stuff there. A little bit.  Speaker  You know.  Quinny  Like I don’t know how long the equator is, but I imagine that it’s quite mountain.  Jill  And it goes right around the middle of the. World. Yeah, covers land and sea.  Dion  Well, anyway, there’s lots of, you know, research islands and stuff like extra research islands. I also love that it’s like, oh, we have thousands of these islands around the equator. Cool. There’s more research places. I’m like, really.  Speaker  Yeah.  Jill  They gave themselves a problem and they gave themselves a very easy way to solve it.  Quinny  Yeah.  Dion  Yeah, it’s like and. But I looked at this, this island, and I’m like, man, that that looks even more like more technology and infrastructure went into that island than the park. So now I understand, I feel like ohh, that’s why they got out of the park cause they just didn’t give a ****. Whereas in this one, I was like, oh, this feels like it was. It had more money as could you said. To me, yesterday spared no expense, but we didn’t see that in Jurassic Park in the 1st. No, we didn’t see the spared no expense. It felt like it was, but it wasn’t. And now look at this one. I was like, wow, they’ve they’ve done so much more. There’s, like, helipads and geothermal energy and a whole bunch of things in there. But it’s a bit of a cop out.  Quinny  I really like. That that whole thing that the first one, you know, we’ve made a a park and we everybody understands theme park. OK, cool. Second film, it’s like AH, but there’s a site B.  Dion  Yeah.  Quinny  And you’re like, OK, fine by the time you get to 7 ******* films later, it’s like there’s sight 274B/3.  Dion  And that sure research area.  Quinny  Yeah. So what’s so cool about this research?  Dion  Where? Where do we keep over?  Quinny  Area I don’t get. It why? Why? Why should we care?  Jill  It’s the lab where they were doing the genetic experiments, so they were trying to cross breed dinosaurs with DNA. To make more exciting and terrifying dinosaurs, Allah the Dominus racks that we saw in the First Jurassic World. Except I think there were a few failures.  Dion  Yes, it’s where they kept all of the the the ones that went wrong. Yeah. Yeah, they’re like, oh, we cloned one. Ohh. It’s got an extra leg. Well, well, we can’t get rid of it. It costs a lot of money. So we’ll just see what we can get out.  Jill  Little bit.  Dion  But. At the end. Right. Yeah. So like it’s kind of like, oh, you have your, your, your your site B where you raise things that you kind of work because you did standard stuff and then you have your as you said, what was it, the Indominus Rex or whatever which was there. But where did all of the bits that came up to that go? Oh, they were at this other site which specialized in ****** dinosaurs.  Jill  Yeah. Where did the unaborted fetuses go?  Dion  Yeah.  Quinny  OK, right. See there, there is a concept there that I like, if only because one of my favorite bits out of alien for.  Dion  You mean the bit?  Quinny  Where there’s the multiple clones of Ripley that they got. Wrong.  Speaker 7  Yeah, right. Yeah. Yeah, it’s.  Dion  Yeah, like that, yeah.  Quinny  Yeah, that that kind of horror of like, yeah, we tried multiple times and **** got real messy.  Speaker 7  But father, why?  Dion  Queen.  Quinny  Yeah, yeah. Yeah, exactly.  Dion  But quinnie, I’m sorry in terms of movie making, that’s not going to happen because we only have the models that we could control C Control V and if every model is distinct and individual. That has different limbs or other things we we can’t do that that is too expensive. Plus we have this really great Tyrannosaurus Rex, one that we’re just going to keep using no matter what. We just reskin it. Another one.  Quinny  Yep, control Z control V.  Dion  Yeah, I mean, I’m I’m really into the island of Doctor Moreau. Dinosaur Island too, like, you know, everything is ******. Like if every dinosaur has had some something that was wrong with it in this, I would have been like, this is an interesting thing. Like, if everything like a Tyrannosaurus Rex with really. Really.  Quinny  Moret.  Dion  Tiny legs and huge arms that would be. I would love watching that. UM, but yeah.  Quinny  I would have loved to have seen like the T Rex. That actually still. Had its feathers and they’re like, yeah, this is actually what came out when we genetically did it. But yeah, nobody wanted to see that. And it looked stupid. So we just had to have that on site. ******* 27 B wouldn’t because.  Jill  That would have been. A better deep cut than just putting a school bus that said Creighton High School on it in. The opening thing like.  Dion  Yeah, I.  Jill  Know the taste levels in this film were non active.  Quinny  Sure. I I did see a sequence where they like they were walking into a a what you would call it like a museum. And they were literally dropping the banner of when dinosaurs ruled the Earth. And I was like, **** me.  Dion  The banner.  Quinny  Really, that’s a bit on the nose.  Jill  Quinny, I will tell you, I will tell you now that is not the first time they exactly ripped off the first film.  Quinny  Ohh dear.  Dion  Yeah. Yeah, but. I was written by the same guy who wrote the first film based on the Michael Crichton book. That’s OK, but I do feel. Like. Yeah, it’s a.  Jill  Is it OK to not do anything original that you have to completely lift sequences?  Dion  Bit.  Quinny  Right. Yeah, yeah.  Dion  Maybe he’s just using. ChatGPT to really he’s like, here’s the story outline. Fill it out.  Jill  Remember, remember the the fun kitchen sequence with the velociraptors. You wanna see that again?  Quinny  Yeah, but with a different. Yeah. Excellent. Sweet.  Jill  Cool, you’ve got it. Yeah. Do you wanna see the sequence well?  Speaker 7  Kids.  Jill  Yeah, yeah, yeah. You got that done alright. Do you wanna see another sequence where someone’s trying to lead a dinosaur away from a?  Quinny  Wait, OK.  Jill  Group of people with a flair. Yeah, because you got that.  Quinny  Too, I love Jurassic.  Dion  Your thing?  Quinny  Park. Yeah. The first film. Yeah.  Speaker  Yeah, like I mean.  Dion  Sorry, it’s it’s it’s interesting because the ideas that are purported from some of the concepts that presented to us in this. Film I were talking about, you know, interesting, different, distorted kind of things. Like, you know, you’ve got established law like they added amphibian DNA to fill out the chains when they got there. And Can you imagine seeing a Tyrannosaurus Rex or even, you know, some sort of Velociraptor that has a tongue that can fire out? And grab like a frog, like that kind of **** is.  Quinny  I still want the the ******* thing that’s in the book. The the The Lost World Book, the sequel book.  Speaker  Uh. That.  Quinny  Is one of the creepiest bits of the novel that they’ve never adapted to the screen. Probably so.  Dion  Which was that? Tell tell me of that news.  Quinny  So there there’s a bit where they’re they’re they’re running away and that’s much like the Lost world film. They’re running away from dinosaurs and suddenly they’re being chased by Raptors and the Raptors **** ***. And they’re, like, hang on, what the **** makes Raptors turn around and run? No way. And they’re like, well, we’ve gone into something else’s territory. We’re in deep ****. We don’t know what it is, and I think it. I think it was a Spinosaurus or something like that, that they patched some of the DNA of of that with a a. Ohh ****. What are the ones that. You can see through.  Dion  Ohh jellyfish Daniel.  Jill  The cuttlefish.  Quinny  No, no. Like the the little gecko, like a gecko. But what are the ones that change? Chameleon. Chameleon. Yeah. So it was like this perfect chameleon dinosaur and everything was scared ******** of it because they could never see it.  Speaker  Thing.  Jill  Well, they did that with the Indominus. They put the the cuttlefish DNA in the Indominus and it was camouflage.  Dion  Yeah.  Quinny  Ohh I didn’t even remember it being that camouflage. I always think of the Indominus as being kind of just white and dumb looking.  Jill  No, it was camouflage.  Dion  Could also and and change its heat signature. And it was, yeah, like they had a whole bunch of weird ****. And it had Velociraptor. DNA.  Speaker  Yes.  Dion  And it had everything, and it was linked to the child that was made.  Speaker  Yeah.  Quinny  Yeah, that was ******* stupid. OK. So, so yeah. Like it was a cool idea. Yeah. Yeah. That you know something that perfectly camouflaged itself. Yeah. But also is is still a normal looking dinosaur.  Dion  I mean, yeah, look. This film has it all. It has all of the greatest dinosaurs that you wanted to see kind of. I don’t know. They tell you in the film what the ones that they’re going to go for and then they do that they go to the ones that they’re going for. It has, you know, a great person to hate straight away. It’s got a great team of mercenaries who also had.  Quinny  Scarlett Johansson was quite pleasant. I don’t. Know what you’re talking.  Dion  Has a great team of mercenaries that all had distinct personalities and the back story. Yeah, yeah, that was the I was there. I’m like, I’m down for this. This is great. This is gonna be a fun adventure. We’re gonna go to the island and get the things. And I’m like, OK, they got, you know, sluty glasses guy. He was gonna be the person you follow. And then they added a family.  Jill  Yeah. How Red shirt gang.  Dion  For no ******* reason.  Jill  Yeah, that you’ve. Never seen the trailer? There’s just a random. Family got added.  Dion  Yeah. If it’s just like, oh, we need more people now. It’s like, do, do we. We had the team, we had the team which we could grow to love. And then when they got eaten by a dinosaur, we would feel something.  Jill  Yeah.  Dion  In this one, we just get to watch, you know, Ed screen get eaten within the first, like, completely wasted within the first time. Like ohh cool. He’s a military. That was. Yeah, he’s the military guy who’s got the only gun that they seem to have. And then he gets eaten and everyone’s like, cool. So you didn’t pack any other ******* guns.  Jill  Yeah.  Quinny  The. Even though you’re going to an island full of deadly dinosaurs.  Dion  None. And you pack 1 gun. That’s a **** gun anyway. Like.  Speaker 2  I don’t.  Quinny  Understand this. The reason they’re going there is for what? What’s the magnuson?  Jill  OK, so the pharmaceutical Rep wants to get blood samples from dinosaurs that had the largest hearts because that’s going to cure heart disease.  Dion  And they could make a **** ton of money. At least they’re open about that straight away, but then also.  Jill  Yeah, yeah, but it doesn’t work if you only get 1 sample from one large hearted dinosaur, you have to collect three. You have to get the air 1 and the water one and the land one. And together with their powers combined. Will cure heart disease.  Quinny  I’m Captain dinosaur planet. Yeah.  Dion  Exactly. And then if you if you use the fire from a flare.  Quinny  Wow.  Dion  It all goes together and also, you know, hey, let’s just let’s just throw in. Rupert, Friends standing there going and also didn’t your dad die of heart disease? Don’t you want to do something about that? And it’s like what? OK, it’s fine. We’ll just go.  Quinny  And heart.  Jill  Yeah, OK, well, now this is a cause that’s closer.  Dion  Yeah, yeah, it’s closer to. It’s closer to my heart, but like, ohh, holy ****, you already had us with money.  Jill  To my heart. So yeah, that will help.  Dion  Because she was like, that’s real dumb. It’s like, well, here’s a bunch of money. And she’s like, yeah, OK, I can do money. I love money. We’ll do money like that was fine. And then. But, you know, I was on board for that anyway, you know.  Jill  Done.  Dion  I also love how what’s his name? Jonathan Bailey’s Henry Loomis. That paleontologist was like. I’m really conflicted about going. To this island that I’ve been like consulting to this pharmaceutical company about how they can make drug and actually like they like he was the one who came up with like no you have to get it from. The heart of a. Living animal while it’s alive and they have to be the biggest. I came up with this idea. It’s like, OK, we’re going the island to do your idea. He’s like, oh, I don’t know if I can go.  Jill  Yeah, it’s like I’ve just dedicated my life to dinosaurs, and I might have the opportunity to see them in real life, but I don’t.  Dion  I mean.  Jill  Think I could.  Dion  Do it, but I’m slightly morally. Conflicted by it, it’s like.  Speaker  Wait. Really.  Dion  Yeah. Anyway, and then there’s an additional family which is just useless. They add nothing to the plot. Nothing. They’re not there for anything. They’re there for different sequences with different dinosaurs.  Quinny  What are they there for?  Jill  They literally add nothing to any of the context of the plot.  Dion  The mercenary team would have been better off not rescuing them.  Quinny  Right.  Jill  Yeah.  Quinny  So they probably would have been better off too.  Jill  Oh, and the whole family subplot. So it’s not like they were even there for. Fodder.  Dion  The survival rate in the.  Quinny  Ohh ****, I thought this. I thought they were gonna be like, you know, the another red shirt but a red shirt that maybe we’re a little bit more invested in because they’re kids or whatever.  Dion  No. The survival rate in this ******* film is way too high.  Jill  Yeah, out of like, all of the characters, I’m pretty sure it was like 4 that died, tops. And there was, I gotta say, like 10 or 12 characters in the movie that were on the island.  Quinny  Right. OK.  Jill  Yeah.  Dion  There were 11. There were 11 people on that island. I just counted them up quickly in the car. There were 11 people and out of it like 3.  Jill  There you go. You go.  Speaker  And it.  Jill  Was 4, three or four? Yeah.  Dion  Died. 33 died.  Jill  Ohh and it was all in the first like action sequence.  Dion  Well, no there was. There was.  Jill  Ohh wait, no there was one later. Two in the first action secrets and.  Dion  Yeah, there was. There was 2 and then one at the end and yeah. And even someone who did a heroic thing of sacrificing themselves to it, like, you know, to to let everyone get out didn’t die for no explanation. Absolutely no explanation. Yeah.  Jill  Then one later. Yeah, didn’t I?  Dion  You explain how that happened, no? You’re gonna explain where the monster. Where did the Montessori’s go? That was literally going to eat him when you went back to pick him up.  Quinny  And wave it. Away.  Jill  Yeah, they’re not the swords. Like, as terrifying as it was, was very slow.  Dion  No idea. The Montessori was.  Speaker 7  Didn’t move very quickly at.  Quinny  I was going to say you may have to help me a.  Speaker 7  All.  Quinny  Little bit. What’s the Montessori, especially as Jill.  Jill  What the source was like is the Phantom of the opera, so he’s the one that.  Speaker 7  Like.  Jill  Kills the scientists in the lab at the start, but you never really see it until the very end, where it reveals itself. But.  Quinny  Oh, he’s he’s.  Dion  Jill, you came up with the greatest explanation of it. This is the special needs dinosaur. Oh, dear. I’m sorry to say it because say that. Yeah, it is. It is the special needs dinosaur because it’s it’s it looks all ******.  Quinny  You can’t.  Dion  It is all ****** **. Yeah, but it’s also like it just makes it makes decisions in there, which is like, are you OK, buddy? Are you a special little dinosaur? Ooh, shiny thing. You know, kind of like, that’s the kind of level you get it. It’s supposed to be big and scary and kind of weird.  Jill  It’s giving Timmy for himself.  Dion  Then OK, you get that. But like by the end of it, you’re like, you could probably distract this thing with a rock.  Speaker  Like.  Dion  Shiny thing? It’s not hunting anyone in particular, it’s.  Jill  Yeah.  Speaker 7  Just yeah, a laser pointer like a.  Speaker  There.  Dion  Cat. Yeah, yeah, he’s a laser pointer. It should be. Like ohh over. Here. OK, alright. Don’t worry about him. He’s just. A.  Quinny  ********. I am looking at the design of it like I’ve found a. Toy of it.  Dion  Right.  Jill  Ohh yeah, they made a toy that was a toy.  Dion  Its official name is Distortus Rex.  Jill  Yeah. That was just because they. Couldn’t call it the R word. Don’t cancel me.  Dion  Restore restores Rex.  Quinny  Yeah. I’m going. I’m just trying to work out why. It has 6 legs.  Jill  Because it’s an abomination. Quitting.  Dion  Why not?  Quinny  Yeah. And a giant alien looking ahead. Actually, you know what it reminds me of doing? It reminds me. Of. Dion  A duback it reminds me of a. Rancor. What did you call me? Easy. It reminds me of of like a. A a a not quite a right rancor.  Quinny  Ohh yeah, but like the tail of the.  Jill  Rankle from Team who, didn’t we?  Speaker 7  Say.  Quinny  Yeah. Yeah. Rank. God, it does have rankle from Teemo, doesn’t it? Yeah, with a little bit of dew back in there as well. But but dewback with with tiny little dumb **** little baby legs at the front. But then giant *******.  Dion  Got removed.  Jill  Excuse me.  Quinny  Clothes as well. Wow. Yeah, terrible design.  Jill  And it was very slow.  Dion  Yeah. Comparatively, yes. Yes. Casper was asking you.  Speaker  Are.  Quinny  There any other cool dinosaurs in?  Dion  There is there is product placement in this which is also funny. OK, here’s the thing. No, there are not really any cool dinosaurs in this.  Jill  They’re all the stock standard ones that we’ve seen before. There was iguanodons. There was a Tyrannosaurus, there was a.  Dion  Spinosaurus.  Jill  Resource resource source. We saw a really fuzzy blurry shot of a couple of loose wrapped.  Dion  Agodon or whatever they want to call it, Moses areas.  Jill  There’s there’s flexicoil and.  Speaker  Oh oh.  Dion  That, that, that game that gave me the sheets. OK, I need to explain. That one. What? What is in every single?  Speaker  And.  Jill  There was a Ankylosaurus, but it was like for 1/2 little second as they’re like rushing through the jungle I’m like. No. Give me ankylosaurus. What? What?  Quinny  Is the.  Dion  What is the staple dinosaur across all of the other Jurassic Park movies? What is it?  Speaker 7  Yes, velociraptor. Yeah.  Dion  It’s a velociraptor. How dare you in this one? Only show a Velociraptor or two velociraptors out of focus.  Jill  Out of focus.  Dion  Stalking the character you want to die like there’s a character that you want that character to die because it’s just a.  Speaker  Yeah.  Dion  Person that didn’t need to be in the field, but also you’re like, yeah, get rid of that, that character that that character’s ******. And then it gets killed. Like they get killed off screen like in the kind of. Behind things so you don’t need to see what happens like. They’re not even. In the frame like ohh we we put lots of Raptors in there.  Jill  It was supposed to be a comedy beat, but.  Quinny  Yeah. Anyway, OK, I I will point out that there is a toy of Zora Bennett with the Velociraptor.  Dion  No, no, no, no, no, they’re well, they kind of I I did look it up. They were like a different kind of Velociraptor that had been engineered. And I’m like, no, that’s just a Pelican with no feathers.  Quinny  OK, right. So.  Speaker  You want to be.  Jill  Hold that one. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was. It looked more like a Pokémon.  Dion  At the end, which was Kinder? Yeah, but you know my favorite dinosaur of this whole movie?  Speaker 2  Wow.  Dion  Merchandising. Dinosaur. That’s right. We’re going to give the little we’re going to give a kid the war merchant door. Yeah, merchant hours.  Jill  Baby Diner Deloris the baby dinosaur.  Dion  Yeah, Mercer hours because ******* rogu the dinosaur. All right. OK. Yeah.  Jill  That’s it.  Dion  Yeah, groger the dinosaur. Who who manages to to to look. It’s almost like Dora the Explorer. Yes, because that’s what it is. The little girl with the backpack is.  Jill  Yes, giving Dora. And boots.  Dion  From from like a Latina background has like adopted. ******* dinosaur. For some reason, even though they’ve been trying to eat her for the whole time, whatever.  Quinny  And and doesn’t. She say early on that she hates dinosaurs. Yeah.  Jill  Well, yeah. She just had a traumatic experience with one, and then all of a sudden, she befriends the baby. 1. Because marketing they.  Dion  I can’t wait for the next one. Jurassic World Re Rebirth, where it’s grown up a little bit and it’s just causing terror around their household because it’s gotten too big. I know, right?  Jill  Yeah, they should get James Gunn to direct that one.  Quinny  I mean, you’ll at least make it fun. Maybe Jill. OK.  Dion  Jill, that’s next week.  Speaker  Look.  Jill  You guys know that I love wanton dinosaur destruction as much as the next, but there was 0 in this movie. This was the most this.  Quinny  And she’s wanting dinosaur destruction.  Jill  Is the biggest. Let down of my life for a Jurassic film.  Quinny  Wow. Yeah, yeah.  Dion  Ohh great it was.  Jill  Not even any of the scenes with dinosaurs were exciting. Was none of them very mediocre?  Dion  I I really liked 1 scene which also did not pay. Off at all. Point of the scene.  Jill  Uh-huh.  Dion  So, and I’ll say because I don’t really feel like it’s not really a spoiler anyway, they they, their boat crashes, they get they have to swim to the beach. The Moses all can’t get in there, but there’s these other like is it Spinosaurus that are like the sail the sail ones yeah I don’t know the ones are the sail Finn on their back they have been kind of swimming around and you know smartly.  Speaker 7  Slide on some things.  Speaker  Yeah.  Dion  The dinosaur expert goes. Like, don’t stop at the beach. They’re amphibious, like keep moving. He keeps running like everyone else is like, oh, finally, we made it to the beach. There’s no more dinosaurs, and he just keeps running. Going. Nope. Nope. And phebus amphibious, like and keeps running into there. And I like that. And someone kind of takes a beat on the beach. And you’re looking at the back, and it’s kind of rocks.  Speaker  Hmm.  Quinny  Yep.  Dion  Everywhere and stuff. And then suddenly one of those ones rolls over. Because it’s been lying on the beach flat. So you didn’t see this? The big sail, Finn. And it’s terrifying because you realize. Ohh ****. They’re on the beach already and everyone’s just kind of relaxing and like breathing heavy and going. Oh my God, I can’t. And one rolls over and kind of like slides around. And you’re like. Holy ****, that’s gonna get that person that’s right there. And then they take a beat and it doesn’t for some reason. Another one comes from somewhere. Else to do it and. Then they just **** ***. Yeah, like they see a person dying like ohh no, that happened anyway. Alright, that’s very sad. We should go. And it’s like they would be hunting you.  Jill  There were a couple of moments that were giving like ohh this is alien vibes. This would work perfectly if they just let into the horror aspect and then they completely swerve the other direction and.  Dion  Yeah. Yeah, this is.  Jill  Basically, make a really kid friendly film.  Dion  Yeah, there’s there’s no horror in this and I think that’s one. Of. The things Queen you’re saying Camp Cretaceous was a. A good TV show. It feels like they they wanted that audience to come and see and they couldn’t get too scary.  Quinny  Yeah. Well, and the and the stupid thing is in in Camp Cretaceous and chaos theory, they do, you know, have enough actual threat in there like dinosaurs do, eat people and ****. You just don’t see it. Like you don’t see big bodies being munched in half, but.  Jill  That was the beauty of the first one. That was the beauty of Jurassic Park. They’re terrified. 8 year old me, but I still went back to keep watching. I’m like, this is ******* terrifying. Must watch more here.  Quinny  Dinosaur leaping. Sir. Absolutely.  Speaker  Yeah.  Dion  They don’t. They do. They hate that guy on the toilet, like the lawyer.  Jill  Yes, snapped him up, chewed him, gobbled him.  Quinny  Down. Yeah, exactly.  Jill  Getting electrified on fences.  Dion  As a.  Quinny  Yeah, and and the, the, the.  Jill  Joke ******** your pants in the kitchen. Yeah, yeah.  Quinny  The Raptors were ******* scary because they were smart, yes.  Speaker 7  Jello.  Speaker  Yeah. Give me.  Quinny  That I mean. Come on. There’s a girl.  Dion  This is this is a like Jurassic Park, is it?  Jill  I ohh Dion, did I tell you or did I not tell you that I wanted them to say clever girl in this movie?  Dion  Is it what?  Jill  And it didn’t happen all the.  Dion  Exactly. We’re waiting for regrets. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Especially considering you’ve got a female lead.  Jill  Of all the things.  Speaker  Yeah.  Dion  Like you know, and.  Jill  Yeah, straight female characters. Yeah, that 41 got eaten, but still.  Dion  Yeah, only it’s it’s one of those. It’s one of those things that I was like. Jurassic Park. The first one is great because you take two kids, you terrorise them with an attack and then the first thing that Ian Malcolm. Sorry. No. Ian. Malcolm. Sam. Meals. Thing is, is also scare them is to make them like.  Speaker 7  Oh yeah, with the color and the.  Dion  No, no, not no, no, the the like the electrified fence. I forgot about that. They’ve just gone through gold.  Jill  Yeah, that’s the first moment he met them. He shows them the the talent and he’s like that. Rip your guts. Out like this?  Dion  No, that was the kid. That was a shift head at the archaeological view.  Quinny  Oh no, I’m pretty. The to the little kid as well, really.  Jill  It doesn’t terrified a kid. Oh.  Dion  Yeah. Ohh yeah, yeah. But like also, I love that like it’s traumatic experience. We should terrorise them a little bit more. I’ll play that joke and then they get terrorized again. Like it is about scaring kids. And this one is not about scaring kids. This one is about making. You know who’s scared in this?  Jill  It wasn’t. There wasn’t even jump scare in this I don’t think.  Dion  No.  Quinny  And yet it’s been very popular and made.  Jill  Why? But why? Why?  Quinny  A lot of.  Speaker  Money.  Quinny  That was my question. That’s my question. Why?  Jill  I think it’s all the people with chat. Deputy brain rot.  Quinny  Who would? Just like yay dinosaur fan?  Dion  It’s it’s, it’s it’s a movie. Like it’s a movie from a pitch deck. It’s like, here’s this action scene. Here’s this action scene. Here’s this action scene. Here’s this action scene. Right. Write it all together for some reason and do it also you. Let’s throw in a message there which I think is Gareth Edwards touch like he’s I feel like Gareth, who’s a good director like I don’t, I don’t think his films are bad. He he wanted to tell a message in it, but he had to do it. In such a. Way, which is like corporations are bad and we should like work together with each other and it just feels ham fisted because he’s been handed a bunch of scenes that he has to put in this movie that don’t make ******* sense. Also, yes again, you mentioned that the other thing quinny the magical blow up boat that seems to be the only thing that can stop dinosaur bites. Yeah. Yeah, because they’re 2 rubbery.  Jill  Completely imperceptible to teeth.  Dion  Yeah. Can’t Pierce a a blow up boat.  Quinny  Oh, we’re OK.  Dion  Which is also done in the stupidness.  Quinny  I’d I’d only read about it and I was like, ohh OK. Magical rubber dingy. Cool, yeah.  Speaker  Sticky.  Dion  Magical rubber, sweet, but also dumb. I mean that whole sequence which was specifically design. Mind for just the T Rex attack was not particularly scary, thrilling or interesting. It was just like they’re gonna get away. Everyone and no one dies.  Quinny  Is is the is the T Rex still even remotely scary?  Jill  No, not in comparison to anything else these days.  Speaker  Yeah.  Quinny  Yeah, right. Because when that. When it first shows up in that first film and you know you don’t see it for a while, it eats a goat off screen and you’re. Like oh ****.  Jill  Yeah.  Quinny  And then it finally shows it up. And it’s this ******* magnificently terrifying thing in the dark.  Jill  Yeah.  Quinny  It was incredible, was there.  Jill  Yeah.  Speaker  That.  Jill  The scariest thing, but like since Jurassic World, he’s just been good guy T Rex. He’s like he’s our pet.  Speaker  Yeah.  Quinny  And that is a problem, isn’t it? Like if you’re now a good guy, we can rely on T Rex to always come through for us.  Jill  Yeah. Again, another slow dinosaur. How how are people in a dinghy outgrowing a Tyrannosaurus Rex?  Dion  Yeah. Or is swimming like, how is a river at both times deep enough for a Tyrannosaurus Rex to swim and then?  Quinny  It’s funny.  Speaker 7  But also the stick. It’s like that Godzilla thing where he’s in the ocean. It’s like his legs go all the way.  Dion  But also to stand in.  Quinny  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.  Speaker 7  Down. They can still serve.  Dion  I’ll stand there and go. Oh, no. I’ve been foiled by my one weakness. A small gap in rock.  Quinny  Casper, I think has hit the absolute nail on the head there. Have the solution. We give the Dinos lasers. I also agree that they should have lasers and should have people riding them. I know riders.  Dion  Yeah. Yeah.  Quinny  I mean, it’s not that ******* hard, guys.  Dion  I mean, come on, there are plenty of islands. There’s gotta be some Indigenous tribe there that’s been left with. And also has domesticated them and now is using them to, you know, fight battle. Why not?  Quinny  Yeah, I’m down for that. Yeah.  Dion  Yeah, yeah. I mean the rest of Hollywood is bankrupt, so why not this one? Hi, Amy.  Quinny  I love the fact that they they go into all of the effort of going OK in the previous films. We’ve now set dinosaurs out into the world and the the whole idea of Jurassic World is that yeah, we are now living in a Jurassic.  Dion  It’s the world. Yeah, yeah.  Quinny  World, where there’s dinosaurs and **** like that. And it’s like, yeah, no undo all of that. Take them out of society so that society just doesn’t care about them and we’re going to put them in a small band in the middle of the of the planet.  Dion  Yep, we’ve gone across the world to come all the way back around. No back to islands in the Pacific. Yeah, yeah.  Speaker  Yeah.  Dion  Cool.  Quinny  Is Scarlett your handsome good.  Jill  She’s adequate.  Dion  You know what I gotta say, all the cast is great because, like they, they are trying very hard. Like they’re all likable. I liked. Wait. OK, let me separate this out. All of the cast from the mercenary side. Like the the you get introduced straight away. They’re all actually quite likable, you know. They’re stereotyped out, so you know who’s who to follow. You know, you got the boat, captain. You got the the mercenary. You got the evil creepy guy. Like it’s very aliens. Easy to follow. It’s like predator. I think I explained that one. It’s like. In the first predator film, by the time they’re on the helicopter going out to the mission, you have identified exactly the difference between all of them and how they work. So yeah, it’s a good way to introduce a cast of different people. Same kind of thing here, here’s all the cast and then they. Had. A boat full of family. That you hate. Like all of them are *****, pretty much or. Bless.  Jill  Yeah, they were pointless, they.  Dion  They’re all.  Jill  Were fine, but they were. Pointless.  Dion  Yeah, fine. But they’re pointless. And then they mix them up. And I was like, this is just irritating and the most irritating thing I think I found about it was after they, their boat crashes, they split them up again to the exact same groups. And that is dumb. Like I mean you presented you, you could have at least given half the mercenaries to the family and half the family to the mercenaries.  Speaker  Hmm.  Jill  If you had mixed them up. Then it’s like, OK, how do we now work with what we’ve got to complete the mission that we have to do, but also get you back safely to get?  Dion  Because the family’s just trying to get off the island and the mercenaries just default back to Ohh well, they’re dead. We’ll.  Speaker 7  And leave the island.  Dion  Just go and get the blood we need.  Jill  Yeah. They’re like, oh, maybe they’ll need us at that helipad that we told. Them about who knows.  Dion  Yeah, yeah.  Jill  And then when they do, they’re like.  Quinny  Oh my God, you made it.  Dion  My God, we never thought we’d see you again.  Speaker 8  Yeah, that’s.  Speaker 7  The grey.  Dion  Yeah, yeah, yeah.  Quinny  The Quetzalcoatlus thing, the the big flying one, is there anything called with?  Speaker  What?  Jill  I mean, no, they’re raiding its nest and then it comes back and it eats one of them.  Dion  No.  Speaker  Oh.  Dion  Do you know what was scarier in the previous films?  Jill  Ohh yeah, they’ve wait, but Joe Bailey fell off a Cliff and survived.  Dion  Because everyone survives, you can’t not survive, right? Also getting up the Cliff is hilarious because, like, we have to make it up there by, like, you know, in the next few hours.  Speaker  Yeah.  Dion  And then they’re just. There. Yeah. Like how how no one can climb that fast. You couldn’t even take an escalator. Fast, but like OK, the the the flying dinosaur like that, the terradon that was in the in the second one. No third one in justified. Well, they went to the Avia and they were like, Oh my God, there’s an aviary. That was scary. And then the eating people off the off the, the the resort in Jurassic World that’s also terrifying. In this one it’s just kind. Of like.  Quinny  Ohh Margarita man being picked up. I love that. It was great.  Dion  Yeah, like all of that kind of stuff. That was this one just kind of felt like ohh no, they got their thing for the thing and now they’ve got their thing, OK. Then they disappear. It’s like, great, now bird is gone and then have to.  Speaker  Yeah.  Dion  Worry about bird anymore.  Jill  Yeah. Yeah, they’re. Like, oh, so once we complete that mission, how do we get off the island? And Scarjo says, Ohh well, there’s a helicopter that I prepared earlier. It would be here at dusk on the second day and it will hover for two minutes precisely. So we must be there at the appointed time so we can leave.  Dion  Yes. And then leave.  Quinny  Here’s one I.  Dion  Prepared, yeah, exactly 100%.  Jill  Precisely.  Quinny  Yeah. I’m sorry. Just wanna wanna call out something Karina has just said in the chat that there’s a mystery temple that they never explain.  Jill  So they’re like. Yeah, because they’re on some random ******* island where a lab has been set up. But here’s like this main looking temple. That are, you know, aptly named Quetzal cottis’s nesting in and they’re like, oh, yeah, whatever.  Quinny  Oh no worse. Yeah, just and wave that away. Yep. Yeah, cool.  Dion  Yeah. Yeah, it’s. There’s a lot of hand waving this way. Actually, there’s a fun one. I know that we’re. We haven’t even got to like ratings or spoilers. I don’t really care. I don’t. Want to play the clip anymore?  Speaker 7  We’re kind of really spoiling this whole movie right now, but it’s not a particularly good movie, I’m afraid, guys.  Quinny  Yeah, I’m feeling like I didn’t I.  Dion  Didn’t even want to play the clip of the family. No, I really enjoyed the weird threesome that was. That was the unintended.  Jill  Oh yeah, what? Joe Bailey in the ****. Chair.  Speaker 7  yeah  Dion  When they’ve when they’ve finally come across. Yeah, what are they called? They’re like. Big the big they’re not brontosaurus or whatever. They’re gigantosaurus whatever they’re like. They’re kind of cool, but.  Speaker  Gig gig addon Adam.  Dion  Gigaton.  Quinny  Giga Dong, well done.  Jill  We didn’t get sleep, got no pain, there was no diesel pain. It just kind of made out for a bit. Now see it.  Speaker  We.  Dion  We said we supposedly supposed to get to this really beautiful moment where these two gigantic gigantosaurus are titanosaurs or whatever it is are like mating. And they go like, oh, my God, we’ve stumbled onto this field where all these things are and they’re mating and we need to get that.  Jill  Titanosaurus Higdon this course. Oh my God. Wait, wait. Can I just say they’re in a field with absolutely nothing, and then they turn slightly and here are these big **** *** dinosaurs, and then they turn around just a little bit more. And then there’s like 100 of them.  Speaker  Why?  Speaker 8  It is cold.  Dion  Yeah, I mean it plays. It plays exactly into that thing which has been established in the previous ones. It’s like do not go into the long grass. That’s where the velociraptors hunt. And you go in, they’re walking in there like, oh, great. We’re finally getting to the action edit. And it’s just ******* giant ones. It just happened to be there.  Jill  Yeah, there’s nothing. Ohh, this is fantastic. Ohh wait. Hang on. Ohh, look at that big one.  Speaker 7  Another big one. I’ll be right on top of.  Speaker 8  Us. What the?  Dion  It’s. *******. It’s supposed to. Yeah, it’s supposed.  Jill  Thing.  Speaker 7  Wait, what? There’s a hundred more over there? Yeah.  Dion  It’s supposed to be this really beautiful moment for Jonathan Bailey’s character as the paleontologist to go, Oh my God, I’m watching this happen in real life and I can see this, and he gets too close to them and touches them. But it is just the fact that there are these two titanosaurus and they just curl like twist sort of twist their necks like ******* snakes. They just do that.  Jill  Yes, they’re just making it out. They’re making.  Quinny  Out they’re making.  Dion  And he’s and. And he’s putting his hand on it. And I’m like, that is the worst part of the reason right there. There is the awkward guy just trying. To get involved. Well, these two are like, what are you doing?  Speaker 7  Getting in the middle of the.  Jill  Well, just I’m just gonna get scratching here. Oh, no. OK.  Dion  Yeah, yeah, yeah. So do I just do an intro or just leave my hand here? Meanwhile, the dinosaur kind of looks down and goes. What are? You doing yes.  Speaker 7  Like is this working for you?  Dion  Stop looking at me.  Quinny  So he’s in the Cockfield exactly.  Dion  Yeah. And then Sky Joe shoots it with a dart for blood for blood and that kind of thing. And that’s how you go.  Jill  And then they’re like. 2 down, one to go.  Dion  I also love how they celebrate every time they get a vial they have they have a they’re like a, a a briefcase full of like, which has space for three vials of blood that that they kind of are using as the as the the progress meter for the game that is this movie. And they all get really excited about harvesting this blood and it’s. Like. You know that you’re the bad guys, right? You’re the bad people. You’re like in Jen from the second movie. You.  Quinny  Know. So is there a point where like and and this is me not having seen it. OK, thank you. Is is there a moment where the the the obviously not great.  Jill  There’s no point.  Speaker 1  There is no point.  Quinny  And the guy at the start turns on them. And of course, OK, just I just just checking. Of course he’s.  Speaker 7  Ohh yes, very early. Very early in the movie.  Dion  He’s established as a complete **** **** the very start, like when.  Quinny  He kind of books them just like that.  Dion  When they’re in, when they’re in the the the water. But like, you know, and then of course he finds.  Speaker 7  Yeah, they’re like.  Jill  No, you’re not a good dude. But we’re just gonna. Look over here.  Dion  Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But we you have money and we do that. And then eventually, of course, he makes.  Jill  Until the moment when they’re like. I think we can get rid of this. Guy, if we just do nothing.  Dion  Yeah. Yeah. And then you’re. You’re right, Kenny. He he does. Carter Burke himself. He he tries to escape him. Leave them all for dead while he tries to get away. And that’s the Carter Burke, you know, right. Not even a satisfying death for him. Just a boring death.  Jill  Yeah. It’s not getting eaten on a toilet.  Speaker  Yeah.  Dion  That’s for sure. No, it is not. And anyway, they all get out and they live happily ever after in only to time to come back now and.  Jill  And we never find out what they did with the.  Quinny  Samples. Ohh really. Nope.  Dion  They kind of say what they plan on doing.  Speaker 7  Jay, just leave the island and that’s it.  Dion  But they don’t say what. There’s no post thing that’s kind of like M we should agree to do this. Yeah, maybe end of film. Ohh alright.  Speaker 7  Yeah.  Dion  Sure.  Quinny  Should we have a clip? And then do our ratings? Do you want to do it the? Other way around I don’t get. I didn’t wanna I. Speaker 7  Whatever works.  Dion  Don’t even wanna play the clip. It’s so dull.  Quinny  Oh.  Dion  Because it’s just the family.  Quinny  Oh, OK.  Dion  No, **** it. I’ll just play the.  Quinny  Clip and the the clip I want to I. On. Want to? I want to see the clip.  Speaker 7  What happened, Dad, where is?  Speaker  He I don’t. Know.  Speaker 8  I’ll go back down. I’ll keep looking.  Speaker 2  Speaker 8  Right.  Speaker 2  What?  Speaker 3  Come on, come on, come on.  Speaker 7  Are you?  Dion  Ohh thank God they all live and no one dies and there are no consequences for anyone in this whatsoever.  Jill  Yeah.  Dion  Yeah, yeah, yes, I know. Karina. How was he? Out. Swim. The mosa saw. We don’t answer these questions. We just watched the films.  Jill  How were they able to outrun a Tyrannosaurus? How was Kincaid able to outrun the? Montessori’s.  Dion  Rex, why was the mosasaur in the open ocean? Also hunting slash, swimming around with the the with the.  Jill  Spinosaurus that we’re in. The middle of nowhere.  Dion  In the middle of nowhere and those just, they just disappear.  Jill  In the middle of nowhere, an amphibious dinosaur was in the middle of the Atlantic helping a mosasaur hunt. Yep. And then where did it go?  Speaker  Yes.  Dion  They just ****** off. We don’t know. Why?  Jill  Where did it go?  Dion  And then, sorry and then?  Jill  We’re doing spoilers right now, yeah.  Dion  And then and then wait.  Quinny  Right and pretty, Kanga says I have to ask is?  Jill  It really called the Montessori. No, it’s just a really monted looking dinosaur.  Dion  No, we just call it the Montessori. Exactly.  Quinny  Like Distorters Rex, but let’s go with yeah, yeah.  Dion  That’s what we say, like, not Billy and the connoisseurs, Billy and the Montours. The the other thing is that that mosasaur like knocks the boat over that they’re on because it’s it’s whatever, ******* territorial. Who cares. And then right after that. Scene where it kind of just misses the guy getting on the boat. Then it just goes. No, pull it. Now go **** ***. Yeah, and it just ***** off like.  Jill  Yeah.  Dion  But it wouldn’t. What? Why? You know.  Jill  This was the stuff that was missing. If they had completely trashed the boat and eaten the family. Would have loved it.  Dion  Fine. Yeah, it could have just been nameless family gone because also as they said it, it just ***** off and then they pick the people up and then the Moses source decides actually, no, the the other boat, that’s the power boat full of mercenaries. That’s the one I’m going to buck up and run aground onto the island. You’re like, wait, it it it could easily funked up a a A. Sailboat, but it knew it had stuff on, and yet it decided to take on the heavily armoured boat.  Jill  Catamaran.  Speaker  Yeah.  Dion  No good reason.  Quinny  I’m in one of the artworks for this that that like also just want to put it out there the the the art, the thing that first indicated to me that perhaps this movie was a bit **** is that all of the posters and everything that I could find looked like the worst *******.  Speaker  Yes.  Quinny  Photoshop jobs that I’ve ever seen. Like it, it’s pictures of like clearly CGI body with its gullet. Your Hansen’s face just kind of pasted onto it halfway up a Cliff or something like that. Not footage, not shots, anything like that. And there is a design in one of them that I went. The **** is that? It has a beaky kind of face, but it looks a bit like a Raptor.  Jill  Yeah, that’s the new kitchen. Dinosaur. Except we’re doing it in a convenience store, but it’s the exact same secret.  Dion  Yeah, yeah, yeah, the the convenient. The convenient dinosaur.  Jill  Yeah, that’s the Pokémon looking one.  Dion  Yeah, that’s the.  Quinny  Right.  Dion  One is like if you took a. Pelican and you took all the feathers off it. Yeah, kind of.  Jill  Thing it’s a little bit flying. It’s a little bit water tight, but.  Dion  It it’s I I called it the goiter dinosaur because it’s got the big kind of flopped up neck that it kind of does, but it’s just it’s just dull.  Speaker  Yeah.  Dion  Right. It does. Yeah, it has no problem. Like there’s there’s no real reason to do it.  Quinny  Dion  It was just there to be like, oh, this is scarier than a Raptor is like, is it because it’s not? You could have just had a Raptor.  Quinny  Right. OK.  Dion  You could have you could you could have made a Raptor with the plates of a stegosaurus. Or imagine you’re a Raptor with the the the horns with horns like you could have done. Yeah. Yeah, you’re ******* with genetics and stuff too. That ****. Make a Raptor with horns so it could impale people.  Quinny  Like a tricera wrapped. Yeah, or.  Dion  That would be ******* scary.  Quinny  Or what?  Jill  How come when I’m trying to think of that that one?  Quinny  Looked like and I get an anklyosaurus. What? What’s the ones that the the head butting ones they? Ankles, horses or.  Jill  No, that’s the. The.  Dion  I think it’s a goto asaurus.  Quinny  I’ll wait for you.  Jill  Was in the last one. He was in Dominion. I can’t remember.  Quinny  Yeah, yeah, I I know. Karina will be able to say Pachycephalosaurus. Yeah, yeah. You know, get a *****. But give that, like, a crown of thorns of of horns or something like that, you know, go for something really ******* out there and mutant and weird. And I’ll be like, OK.  Speaker  Hey.  Speaker 7  Sure.  Quinny  Cool. It sounds like we’re not not weird enough.  Dion  Yeah, I I feel like they’re like, oh, we’re going to do the island of meat and dinosaurs. It’s like, cool. So we don’t really have models that we can do that with because they cost more money. So where do you want to focus on? Is that do we have to keep the other cast of the family with the boat in? Right? It’s like, no, can we get rid of them? No, they have to stay. No, weird dinosaurs. Just use the dinosaurs you already got. It’s it’s a. It’s a bit, yeah. It’s weird, right? So ratings.  Quinny  Yeah, I was gonna say drop some numbers at me like and and if you’ve seen it in the chat, which I know Karina has. You know, drop some of that with with a number after it, so I know what’s gone on.  Dion  25-O Jesus just ******.  Speaker  Wow.  Dion  It’s it’s annoying on both sides. It it? It neuters the dinosaurs and their effectiveness and their scariness, and it also neuters the really good cast you had. And the smart things you could have done and the director, I feel. I feel like everyone kind of. Got. Castrated by this, for whatever reason, I don’t understand why I didn’t like it that much, and I would probably no, I can’t really defend. I’m thinkin

(0:00:33) Al: My name is Al. (0:00:34) Codey: And my name is Cody. (0:00:37) Al: And we are here today to talk about Cottagecore Games. (0:00:40) Codey: Oh, woo, ow, ow, ow. (0:00:44) Codey: I love it. I love it so much. (0:00:47) Al: I tolerate it. (0:00:49) Al: We are here today. (0:00:51) Al: We’re going to talk about Len’s Island, the second harvest of Len’s Island, (0:00:53) Codey: mm-hmm mm-hmm mm-hmm like three years ago yeah yeah much has changed (0:00:55) Al: because you did do an episode. (0:00:57) Al: You and Bev did an episode. (0:01:00) Al: When was that? (0:01:01) Al: I did have that up here, and then I lost it. (0:01:04) Al: Yeah, we think it was 2022. (0:01:06) Al: Yeah, yeah, there we go. (0:01:07) Al: Oh, April 2022, so more than three years ago. (0:01:12) Al: Wild. (0:01:15) Al: Well, I’ll be looking forward to hearing about what has changed. (0:01:20) Al: So, yeah, we’re going to talk about Len’s Island. (0:01:22) Al: Before that, obviously, we have news. (0:01:25) Al: But first of all, Cody, what have you been up to? (0:01:28) Codey: I have been obviously playing Lens Island the last couple days. (0:01:33) Codey: I have been, Pokemon Go has been having its like anniversary thing right now and you, (0:01:40) Codey: there is a chance to get shiny party hat worm bowl, which is my white whale. (0:01:46) Codey: I have a master ball ready to go for that little guy. (0:01:51) Codey: And so I’m trying to find one after we record this podcast, I will be going on a walk for (0:01:57) Codey: as long as I need to. (0:01:58) Codey: Um, no, I don’t care about that. (0:02:00) Al: Have you been trying to get a shiny gimme go? (0:02:04) Codey: I really just want the shiny, shiny party hat worm bowl. (0:02:07) Codey: And then I will probably just uninstall the game. (0:02:09) Al: Shiny purple. (0:02:11) Codey: Shiny party, purple party, purple. (0:02:13) Al: Party purple. (0:02:16) Al: Apparently, I’m really struggling with the word party in front of it. (0:02:17) Codey: Um, (0:02:19) Al: That’s really hard to say. (0:02:21) Al: Party purple. (0:02:22) Codey: Permable. (0:02:23) Al: Permple. (0:02:23) Codey: Uh, so I’ve been doing that. (0:02:25) Codey: I’m still playing honeygrove. (0:02:27) Codey: I just got the (0:02:28) Al: Has that, is that changing at all? (0:02:29) Codey: It’s just continuing. It’s just being the same game. There’s quests. There’s like parts of it that are unlocked. The one thing that I really friggin hate is there’s this ladybug lady who comes and goes. Her name is Abigail and she comes during the weekends and she leaves. It is. (0:02:30) Al: Or is it just continuing? (0:02:32) Al: Okay. (0:02:49) Codey: It is exponentially difficult to get her top tier reward and the things that she wants are things. (0:02:58) Codey: Nine times out of ten, it’s like plants that she brings that you can only plant when she’s there and if you have planted say you have 20 in your inventory and then she leaves, but the next time she comes you’re back to zero, which I think if they rolled the inventories over, I’d be so I’d participate more because I would feel like I have like a head start to the next time. (0:03:27) Codey: but they (0:03:28) Codey: don’t do that and so I’ve just kind of given up and whenever she arrives they (0:03:34) Codey: like make a big deal about how she showed up and then they cut they send (0:03:39) Codey: you to her screen and I’m like just let me click X like just let me be like okay (0:03:44) Codey: cool she’s here goodbye like I don’t want but every single time it cuts you (0:03:49) Codey: over to her screen and she says stuff and I’m just like leave me alone but I’m (0:03:54) Codey: still like unlocking parts of the map it’s just I don’t do a ton on it I just (0:03:58) Codey: every day for word mm-hmm (0:04:00) Al: Fair enough. I was going, I was going to say, it’s like, oh, I can’t believe you’re just (0:04:04) Al: playing the same game over and over for years. And then, and then, and then I realized we (0:04:07) Codey: hit me (0:04:10) Al: just talked about the ninth anniversary of Pokemon Go. Yeah. Yeah. See, I see I wouldn’t, (0:04:12) Codey: that and I will literally play minecraft forever for yeah (0:04:18) Al: but like Pokemon Go is like the thing that I continue forever. And it’s like, yeah, sure. (0:04:23) Al: I’ll play like party games regularly and I’ll do like, I will obviously play. (0:04:30) Al: Uh, other Pokemon games, but like, I’ll play them for until the new one comes out and then (0:04:35) Al: I’ll probably never touch them again, et cetera, et cetera. So it’s like, yeah, but no, I can’t (0:04:36) Codey: Um, so the other, yeah, the other things I’ve been still doing work, uh, probably (0:04:41) Al: really judge. (0:04:47) Codey: won’t be defending in September, but I’ll be defending in December instead. (0:04:51) Codey: Um, which is not a huge deal. (0:04:53) Codey: Uh, no, I’ll get it. (0:04:55) Codey: I would, my degree will get conferred in the spring, which I (0:04:58) Codey: kind of don’t really care anyways. (0:05:00) Al: » Just a formality. (0:05:01) Codey: Um, yeah, it’s a formality and like for jobs. (0:05:06) Codey: Um, people get accepted to jobs that require PhDs before they’ve even (0:05:12) Codey: defended, um, cause it’s a pretty, like, once you get to this point, you really (0:05:17) Codey: have to mess something up big time. (0:05:20) Codey: Like I would literally have to like stop putting any effort in and just give my (0:05:24) Codey: dissertation in this format it’s in now for them to be like, you’re not done. (0:05:29) Al: Yeah, yeah, yeah. You’ve gotten to that point, it’s like you have to really muck things up too. (0:05:30) Codey: Um, (0:05:34) Codey: Yeah. So, so I’m not really that worried about. (0:05:36) Codey: It. I have technicians right now, which is nuts because I, for this whole time I’ve been (0:05:42) Codey: solo or working with volunteers and the volunteers just helped me in the field. (0:05:47) Codey: I’ve been doing all the specimens by myself, but I have three henchmen right now. It is crazy. I (0:05:54) Codey: went from none to three in like a month. Um, a couple of them will be leaving at the end of July. (0:06:01) Codey: So this month is like a lot of me being working with them and making sure that they’re on the (0:06:07) Codey: and that we’re getting all the stuff that needs to be done done, which is really nice. Um, and (0:06:13) Codey: they’re all super great. We have a good little cohort. I’m also going to beetle school in a week (0:06:18) Codey: and a half. So like fly school, it’s same, same, but it’s Beatles and it’s Arizona, (0:06:25) Codey: which I’m not excited for that part, but I think it’ll be fine. I, I literally think I just won’t (0:06:32) Codey: go outside, except for at night, which it’s supposed (0:06:36) Codey: to be a lot colder at night in the desert area areas. (0:06:40) Codey: The big thing that’s in my life right now (0:06:42) Codey: is that I am fostering a stray cat. (0:06:46) Codey: So I will post a picture of him. (0:06:47) Codey: He’s gone through a couple name changes. (0:06:50) Codey: Initially, he was Calvin, and now he is Zuko. (0:06:57) Codey: And I got him because one of my friends (0:07:02) Codey: called me one night, like a week and a half ago, (0:07:04) Codey: and was like, we’ve caught a cat. (0:07:07) Codey: And I’m like, do you have head injuries? (0:07:11) Codey: Do you have a cat carrier slash– (0:07:13) Codey: do you know someone who could take care of this cat (0:07:15) Codey: until we can get it looked at? (0:07:17) Codey: And I came, we tried to get that cat. (0:07:19) Codey: They had caught it in a tote. (0:07:21) Codey: But then when we tried to move it from a tote to the cat (0:07:23) Codey: carrier, it escaped. (0:07:25) Codey: I went back later that day, I ended up finding this boy. (0:07:28) Codey: And he is just so chill, and just trots right up in purrs (0:07:32) Codey: and meows, and he just wanted food. (0:07:34) Codey: So I snagged him. (0:07:37) Codey: It says, “Zuko-Ime.” (0:07:39) Al: Ah, I see. (0:07:42) Al: I get that reference now, I wouldn’t have six months ago, but I get it now. (0:07:44) Codey: Yeah. (0:07:45) Codey: Oh, yeah, yeah. (0:07:47) Codey: So he’s Zuko after, at the end. (0:07:51) Codey: He’s calm. (0:07:52) Codey: He’s found his inner peace. (0:07:54) Codey: He’s just so chill. (0:07:54) Codey: He doesn’t– in the month and– not month and a half– week (0:07:58) Codey: and a half that I’ve had him, he hasn’t hissed. (0:08:00) Codey: He hasn’t raised a claw at all. (0:08:04) Codey: He and Stella get along really well. (0:08:07) Codey: Sometimes Stella will come at him pretty fast, (0:08:09) Codey: and he’s just raised a paw, but that’s it. (0:08:12) Codey: He doesn’t claw her. (0:08:14) Codey: He doesn’t hiss at her. (0:08:15) Codey: He’s just like, give me space. (0:08:16) Codey: And then she walks away. (0:08:19) Codey: And we were going to try and go find the other one. (0:08:22) Codey: We ended up finding it, and it’s a hoarding situation. (0:08:28) Codey: All of these cats are part of a hoarding situation. (0:08:30) Codey: There’s 20 cats that are part of it. (0:08:34) Codey: And so I’ve called the Humane Society and the Humane. (0:08:36) Codey: and they said that any time they’ve brought a cat that is injured or has something wrong with it to her and been like, “Hey, is this your cat?” (0:08:44) Codey: Even if they know it’s her cat, she’ll still say, “That’s not my cat.” (0:08:46) Codey: So they were like, “Don’t worry about it. Just keep trying to find him a good home.” (0:08:52) Codey: So she also doesn’t believe in spaying and neutering. (0:08:56) Codey: So it’s just a never-ending cycle. (0:08:58) Codey: She’s also living with her cat. (0:09:02) Codey: So it’s just a never-ending cycle. (0:09:08) Codey: So it’s kind of a big ol’ big thing. (0:09:10) Codey: But saving this baby. (0:09:14) Codey: And he’s a good boy. He’s very chill. (0:09:18) Codey: And that’s really the biggest stuff that I’ve been up to. (0:09:20) Codey: What about you, Al? What have you been up to? (0:09:24) Al: Well, I have been playing Lens Island, obviously, we’ll talk more about that later. (0:09:32) Al: What else have I been up to as I pause the game and scroll back to my list of things? (0:09:34) Codey: Pause the game. (0:09:40) Codey: Al, you’re not pausing the game. (0:09:42) Al: Of course I’m pausing the game. (0:09:43) Al: Oh, you mean I’m not playing the game, I got you. (0:09:44) Codey: Yeah, you’re not playing. (0:09:46) Codey: You’re not playing the game while you’re… (0:09:46) Al: No, of course not, Mario Kart World, yes. (0:09:48) Codey: No. (0:09:52) Al: I unlocked mirror mode, I don’t think I’ve done that in the last episode. (0:09:55) Al: Who knows, it’s been so long since I recorded that a whole week. (0:09:56) Codey: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. (0:10:00) Al: And I started doing the mirror mode Grumpries and I don’t think I’m going to finish doing them. (0:10:09) Al: I think getting three stars in all of them in 150 is probably enough for me. I’m happy with that. (0:10:15) Al: So we’ll see. Maybe I’ll do more later. I don’t know, but I’ve got what we got left a week and a (0:10:22) Al: and a half until Donkey Kong. (0:10:25) Al: Which is the next game to look forward to. (0:10:30) Al: And I mean, you know, the usual Pokemon here and there. (0:10:33) Al: I got Shiny Patchourichu yesterday. (0:10:36) Al: And Pokemon Go, as usual. (0:10:39) Al: I got my Shiny Game of Go, even though you’re not looking for it. (0:10:41) Al: I was looking for it. (0:10:42) Codey: Nope. Yep. (0:10:42) Al: I got two Shiny Game of Go, one normal and one costume. (0:10:47) Al: It’s not a costume, though. (0:10:48) Al: It’s a pretend costume. (0:10:48) Codey: Yep. (0:10:52) Al: Yeah, I think that’s about it. (0:10:54) Al: Kids are on holiday from school now, so it’s all madness. (0:10:58) Codey: - Mm-hmm. (0:10:59) Al: And we’ll be going to the Isle of Man in a few weeks. (0:11:04) Al: So just trying to see how life is something like near sanity for a while. (0:11:04) Codey: Oh, woo. (0:11:10) Codey: - Mm-hmm, yeah, cool, mm-hmm. (0:11:12) Al: We’ll see. (0:11:14) Al: But yeah, I think that’s it. (0:11:16) Al: Let’s talk about some news. (0:11:19) Al: First up, we have the Harvest Moon Cozy Bundle, which is such a (0:11:24) Al: stupid name for this, but this is the Lost Valley in Skytree Village ports to Nintendo Switch. (0:11:33) Al: They have delayed it. (0:11:35) Al: It was meant to be coming out on the 3rd of July. (0:11:38) Al: It is now coming out on the 31st of July. (0:11:41) Al: There you go. (0:11:42) Codey: That’s the tweet. That’s it. (0:11:43) Al: That’s it. (0:11:44) Al: That’s it. (0:11:45) Al: Who knows what? (0:11:46) Al: It’s probably some weird thing to do with the physical version or something. (0:11:49) Al: That’s not a “we found a bug and we need to fix it.” (0:11:52) Al: That’s not long enough. (0:11:54) Al: So yeah, who knows what the problem is? (0:11:57) Al: But I guess we’ll find out. (0:12:00) Al: Next, we have Desktop Cat Cafe. (0:12:04) Al: No, goodness sake. (0:12:06) Al: Desktop Cat Cafe. (0:12:08) Al: I’ve released their 2.0 version. (0:12:12) Al: That is out now. (0:12:15) Al: They have apparently a patience meter for customers. (0:12:17) Al: I find this funny because who’s going to Cat Cafe for fast food, right? (0:12:23) Al: you’re going to a cat cafe for. (0:12:24) Codey: Yeah. Yeah. So I think well, so it’s it is a it’s a cafe that is cats, like your customers are cats. (0:12:33) Al: Oh, I misunderstood that. (0:12:34) Codey: Yeah, yeah, so this is this game is the rusty island rust. Yeah, a rusty is like, (0:12:37) Al: So it is. (0:12:40) Al: Yes, it’s a rust is like, yeah, yeah, yeah, I knew that much. (0:12:43) Al: I knew that much. (0:12:44) Al: I just forgotten that it was a cafe the cats go to. (0:12:46) Codey: yeah, so they’re, they’re all cats. And it’s very cute. I just thought it was funny, (0:12:51) Codey: because I’m sure that, like, the patient- (0:12:54) Codey: -meter or something you can toggle on and off. (0:12:56) Codey: I’m sure that you could have it be like, um, (0:12:58) Codey: you could have it be, like, slow-mode or something like that in the- (0:13:02) Codey: in the bottom, but you basically can, like, (0:13:04) Codey: make these little cafes across the bottom of your screen, (0:13:06) Codey: and now they’ve added this patient- (0:13:10) Codey: -meter, so it’s kind of like- (0:13:12) Codey: Did you ever play dining- Diner Dash? (0:13:14) Codey: Or anything like that? (0:13:14) Al: No, I did not. (0:13:16) Codey: Okay, so it’s like the- (0:13:18) Codey: It’s like those types of games where you have (0:13:20) Codey: orders that are up. I think Overcooked does this, (0:13:24) Codey: like, orders are there, and then they start getting, like, (0:13:26) Codey: more and more red, and they start shaking (0:13:28) Codey: when, like, the person is grumpy, (0:13:30) Codey: and they might just leave. (0:13:32) Codey: Um, and so it’s- (0:13:34) Codey: It’s an incentive to try and make sure (0:13:36) Codey: that you are prioritizing orders (0:13:38) Codey: in the order that they were received, (0:13:42) Codey: and then also, um, (0:13:44) Codey: that you make sure that each place (0:13:48) Codey: probably has all of the same- (0:13:50) Codey: all of the things that they want, (0:13:52) Codey: and might have (0:13:54) Codey: your worker cat, like, upgraded to be max speed or max efficiency or whatever. (0:13:59) Codey: And they also have different traits for your customers now. So it’s like there’s the patient (0:14:09) Codey: modifier. So it’s a decor item that impacts the nearby customers. So there’s something that you (0:14:15) Codey: can put down that makes your customers more patient. I think it’d be funny if that was like a TV. (0:14:21) Codey: If you put down like a TV and then they’re- (0:14:24) Codey: like oh I’m fine waiting because I have a TV to watch. (0:14:28) Codey: So they sit down and then they’re willing to wait longer. (0:14:32) Codey: There’s one that increases their- speeds up their decision time. (0:14:36) Codey: So because they’ll sit there and they’ll be like hmm what do I want? (0:14:38) Codey: And so there’s one that makes them decide faster. (0:14:42) Codey: And then there’s something that boosts how much they’ll spend. (0:14:46) Codey: So you will end up getting a higher revenue from per customer. (0:14:54) Codey: Things like that to also improve it. (0:14:56) Codey: I also think that it’s nice that they changed the order distribution. (0:15:02) Codey: So it sounds- I haven’t played this but from what it says to me what this sounds like is they had different cafes or different workstations or cafe stations. (0:15:14) Codey: And some cats might just- like all the cats might just go to one cafe. (0:15:20) Codey: So you have one cat that’s working one of the cafe stations. (0:15:24) Codey: Who’s just like absolutely overloaded and then another one is really not that busy. (0:15:32) Codey: Because it was randomized but it sounds like they’re now assigning those orders based on workload. (0:15:38) Codey: So if like one station is really really busy cats will be like I don’t want to go there and they’ll go to a different one and that kind of like spreads out the demand. (0:15:50) Al: Mm-hmm (0:15:54) Codey: You can also name your cats, name your cafe, different things like that. (0:15:58) Codey: You can upgrade your stations. The cats will walk faster on paths. (0:16:04) Codey: So if you draw paths they will speed up on those and you can shift click and copy something from one place to another. (0:16:18) Codey: This is a really cute game. I do know that Jordan. (0:16:24) Codey: Jordan is from Morris Games, the dev of Rusty’s retirement. (0:16:30) Codey: They have been like repping this game and saying that this game is really cute and that they recommend this game. (0:16:38) Codey: So I’m tempted, especially because I’m about to have to be writing a lot for my dissertation, but I also feel like this is just going to be a distraction. (0:16:48) Codey: Also, now that I’m looking at it, it’s Windows only, so it doesn’t matter, but… (0:16:52) Al: Mm hmm. (0:16:54) Codey: Very cute. It’s fine. (0:16:55) Al: Sad. (0:16:59) Al: Yeah, interesting. (0:17:02) Al: Good, they got a nice new update out. (0:17:06) Codey: Mm-hmm. (0:17:06) Al: Speaking of updates, next we have fields of mystery. (0:17:10) Codey: Fields of mystery. (0:17:14) Al: Their third major update is coming out on the 21st of July. (0:17:19) Al: They apparently have new large and extra-large chests. (0:17:22) Al: I’m very happy about it, because chests are never big enough for me. (0:17:26) Al: I hate chests being so small. (0:17:29) Al: Cough, lens, island, cough. (0:17:30) Codey: Yeah. (0:17:31) Al: Give me bigger chests. (0:17:33) Al: Presumably, there’s lots of other stuff. (0:17:35) Al: I can’t remember whether we talked about the third update or not, because, (0:17:40) Al: oh yes, it’s bringing (0:17:43) Al: eight heart events as well, dating a bunch of stuff. (0:17:48) Al: new mains, new mains monsters. (0:17:52) Al: The town cap has been raised by five levels, a bunch of stuff. (0:17:58) Al: I’m still not going to play the game again until 1.0, but good to see they’re just continuing. (0:18:03) Al: I think that’s the third update this year. (0:18:05) Codey: Yeah, it’s the third major update this year (0:18:08) Codey: It’s coming on July 21st (0:18:11) Codey: so they’re gonna have that like we said bigger storage another thing that some fans in the comment section that we’re really happy about is (0:18:17) Codey: The auto deposit feature. So being able if you have (0:18:18) Al: Ah yes. (0:18:22) Codey: like your (0:18:24) Codey: Chest open and your inventory open you can automatically like move things between them (0:18:30) Codey: just like by clicking a button so that if you already have stacks of stuff and you’re (0:18:35) Codey: inventory it’ll just automatically shuffle everything out of your out of from yeah i (0:18:40) Al: Yeah, I enjoy that feature. (0:18:42) Codey: really like that feature as well i’m very happy that they added that um so and I know the fans (0:18:48) Codey: are as well so good on them (0:18:51) Al: Next, we have Paleopines. (0:18:54) Al: They have launched a Kickstarter for their player’s choice expansion to Paleopines. (0:19:01) Codey: - Mm-hmm. (0:19:03) Al: It’s already hit his goal, so that’s good. (0:19:06) Al: There’s 24 days left. (0:19:08) Al: This, I don’t actually look at it, but it looks like Cody did, so talk about it. (0:19:11) Codey: Okay, yeah, I did. (0:19:13) Codey: I will talk about it. (0:19:15) Codey: So basically, they have gotten a lot of feedback (0:19:17) Codey: from the players. (0:19:19) Codey: And so they decided to accommodate a lot of those, (0:19:24) Codey: that feedback in a DLC and an expansion (0:19:27) Codey: that is part of this Kickstarter. (0:19:31) Codey: Kickstarter gives them money to work on the updates. (0:19:35) Codey: They did mention though, (0:19:36) Codey: that once the expansions are out, (0:19:40) Codey: if you’ve already bought the game, (0:19:41) Codey: it’s just gonna automatically be updated. (0:19:44) Codey: So even if you didn’t kickstart, it sounds like, (0:19:47) Codey: as long as you have the game, (0:19:49) Codey: you will reap the benefits of all of this stuff. (0:19:55) Codey: So, beautiful game, adorable game. (0:19:59) Codey: there’s been a lot of feedback. (0:20:01) Codey: And so they have a couple of different funding goals. (0:20:03) Codey: So they’ve hit the 75k pounds. (0:20:07) Codey: Let me figure it out. (0:20:09) Codey: Yeah. (0:20:10) Codey: So they hit that, but we’re still on our way (0:20:15) Codey: to the second stretch goal, which is for automated poop (0:20:21) Codey: clearing. (0:20:22) Codey: So the big questions that community members wanted (0:20:26) Codey: were that they wanted a spinosaurus in the game, (0:20:29) Codey: and they wanted more dreaming. (0:20:32) Codey: So that has been hit period, end of story, with their Kickstarter. (0:20:36) Codey: And so that will, they have slated that to be done in the autumn of this year, (0:20:41) Codey: which is almost now, honestly. (0:20:46) Codey: So that they’re expecting that to be done in the next few months. (0:20:51) Codey: The next thing, the next goal is for the better way to scoop poop. (0:20:55) Codey: I guess people said that it was something that couldn’t be automated. (0:20:59) Codey: It was something that was really frustrating. (0:21:01) Codey: They have made it so there are certain dinosaurs that you can (0:21:06) Codey: assign to be composting dinosaurs. (0:21:09) Codey: And they will go and pick the poop up for you and go and put it in the compost bin. (0:21:14) Codey: Super cool. (0:21:16) Codey: Another thing about the second stretch goal, which is a quality of life update, (0:21:21) Codey: is to be able to track the different colors of the dinosaurs in your journal. (0:21:27) Codey: I know that this game has a lot of different colors, (0:21:30) Codey: color variance of specific. (0:21:31) Codey: Dinosaurs, um, and you kind of had to just like know whether or not you (0:21:36) Codey: already had a color variant. (0:21:38) Codey: And so they’ve added that to the journal. (0:21:41) Codey: So you can now see like, Oh, I already have this color. (0:21:44) Codey: I need this other color. (0:21:46) Codey: Um, you can see that very clearly in your journal now, or will be able to see that (0:21:50) Codey: in winter 2025, if they reach that stretch goal. (0:21:53) Codey: Um, so that would require another 80,000 pounds past, um, the goal. (0:22:00) Codey: And then… (0:22:02) Codey: The last one that they have gotten a request for is a swamp exploration. (0:22:06) Codey: So there’s a swamp area. People really want to go into the swamp, I guess. (0:22:10) Codey: We all want to be ogres. (0:22:12) Codey: And so they have slotted that. It’s another Kickstarter stretch goal. (0:22:17) Codey: And if it is achieved, they expect to have that done in spring 2026. (0:22:22) Al: One thing I don’t like about this stretch goals thing. (0:22:26) Al: They’ve written it out as plus 40,000 pounds and plus 40,000 pounds. (0:22:30) Codey: » Yeah. (0:22:32) Al: You’re like, but what does that mean? (0:22:34) Al: What is the total amount there? (0:22:35) Al: Right? Because you’re not you’re not looking and it’s like it’s fine when you (0:22:38) Al: get to the first one because you’re like, oh, it’s just 75 plus 40. (0:22:41) Al: But then you go to the next one, it’s like, OK, well, it’s just 75 plus 40 plus 40. (0:22:45) Al: And then you go to the last one, you’re like plus 190,000 pounds, (0:22:48) Al: which, by the way, is more than the rest of them put together. (0:22:50) Codey: or yeah. No. Yep. Yeah, I agree. But that’s the goal posts and the timelines and everything. (0:22:51) Al: But you’re just like, OK, so what number is the half? (0:22:53) Al: 75 plus 40 plus 40 plus 190. (0:22:58) Al: I’m not doing all that maths. (0:23:00) Al: Just show us what number it is. Come on. (0:23:10) Codey: The Kickstarter itself, you can get rewards that will be in-game and in real life. So (0:23:17) Codey: things like you’ll get your name in the credits. (0:23:20) Codey: They might send you pins, they might send you a plush, just depending on which (0:23:24) Codey: Kickstarter level you choose. Another thing they said is to add a new color variant, (0:23:30) Codey: which I think is super cool. But then also like what if I chose a color variant and everyone hated (0:23:38) Codey: it and people just like pooped all over it and I was like oh I actually spent a lot of money (0:23:43) Codey: to choose. But yeah and again all of the updates that will go to the game for free so (0:23:51) Codey: if you’re right now I guess if you really want that poop thing help them achieve that part of the goal. (0:23:58) Al: I love to scoop poop. (0:23:59) Codey: But yeah that’s interesting. It’s also interesting to me how they’re like (0:24:06) Codey: it’ll be it’ll be free for you and I’m like okay but like it’s really not free. (0:24:12) Codey: People do have to pay quite a lot of money to get this. (0:24:18) Al: Well, so, but is it free? (0:24:20) Al: Like, is this just to raise money to do it and the actual update will be free for anyone? (0:24:24) Codey: - Yeah, so that’s what it is. (0:24:30) Codey: I don’t know, some of this stuff, (0:24:30) Codey: like some of the other stuff that they want, (0:24:32) Codey: like for the quality of life update (0:24:35) Codey: is to be able to reject quests or delete quests (0:24:40) Codey: because your quest log will just get overrun, I guess, (0:24:43) Codey: and people just wanted the ability to delete quests. (0:24:45) Codey: And so that will be a part of the quality of life update (0:24:48) Codey: that they want to release winter 2025. (0:24:51) Codey: So that is 80,000. (0:24:55) Codey: So that’d be 150,000, 155,000 pounds to needs to be what they hit. (0:25:00) Codey: I think they’re at a 90 something right now. (0:25:02) Codey: So, but that’s still is like a lot to even just have like this very simple thing. (0:25:08) Codey: It seems, I mean, it seems simple. (0:25:10) Codey: I think that part really is fairly simple. (0:25:14) Codey: They did and they did a good job in their video that they have of explaining why some of these things are not as simple as they seem like adding a Spinosaurus isn’t as simple as it seems. (0:25:24) Codey: Because of the optimization that has to happen as behind the scenes of adding in Spinosaurus. (0:25:32) Codey: So I get that, but for certain things like give them the option to delete. (0:25:38) Codey: I feel like I feel like you could do that. (0:25:40) Codey: I don’t know, especially if that’s something that like, I don’t know. (0:25:46) Codey: I don’t know. (0:25:48) Codey: I don’t know. (0:25:48) Codey: What if they don’t? (0:25:50) Codey: What if they don’t hit that? (0:25:50) Codey: Like, what if they don’t hit that goal? (0:25:52) Codey: Are they just not going to do these things then? (0:25:54) Codey: But I also get that they’re independent, like they need to get paid to be able to do these things. (0:26:02) Al: So I guess that the problem is, because they’ve struggled with money for quite a while. We’ve (0:26:09) Al: talked about that previously. We’re having issues with publishers and stuff like that anyway, (0:26:15) Al: whatever. So obviously, they need to make enough money to be able to keep going and be able to do (0:26:20) Al: what they want to do. And I guess the thing is that saying, “Oh, if we hit our main funding goal, (0:26:25) Al: we’ll give you these quality of life updates. It’s not going to excite people.” So you go, “Well, (0:26:29) Al: if we hit this funding goal we’ll give (0:26:32) Al: you Spinosaurus that sounds much more exciting. Which means that if you don’t put the main (0:26:40) Al: funding goal as enough to cover everything you want then you won’t be able to include (0:26:46) Al: the quality of life updates without more money. But then yeah it does feel a little bit like (0:26:52) Al: not great. It’s like yeah we’re waiting until we’ve got even more (0:26:58) Al: till we give you some quality of life updates, which yeah, doesn’t feel- (0:27:02) Al: great, but it’s a difficult one. (0:27:05) Codey: Mm-hmm, yep (0:27:07) Al: Anyway, they’ve had their funding goal, so that’s good. They’re going to get the Spinosaurus out, (0:27:12) Al: and probably we’ll hit the next one. Whether they’ll hit the one after that or not is a (0:27:18) Al: different question. I suspect they probably won’t hit the Swamp goal. That’s quite a lot more, (0:27:20) Codey: Yeah. (0:27:23) Al: but if you really want that, go help them out. You can get a lot of rewards for that as well. (0:27:32) Al: Go get your plushies, and design your bright pink Spinosaurus or whatever. (0:27:38) Codey: Sorry, I’m looking at the next thing already and getting confused. (0:27:41) Al: All right, Dive the Diver! (0:27:46) Al: A couple of bits of news here. It’s the second anniversary of the Diver, which wow, that’s (0:27:52) Al: crazy. A couple of things around the DLCs. First of all, the Godzilla DLC is back, (0:27:59) Codey: Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh. (0:28:00) Al: so you can go get it if you didn’t get it (0:28:02) Al: before that one is a free one go get it now you just have to own the game if (0:28:06) Al: you own the game you can you can add the DLC you don’t have to play it or (0:28:09) Al: anything like that yet the itchy bands holiday has also been extended when you (0:28:17) Al: can get it until the end of 2026 (0:28:20) Codey: Mm-hmm. So this is one that so Ichiban Kasuga is the character. This is what I was just looking at (0:28:28) Codey: He’s a kid he’s the character in a game a yakuza game (0:28:32) Codey: and (0:28:34) Codey: That that game franchise is owned by Sega (0:28:39) Codey: Toshi hero Nagoshi and Sega and so because people have been commenting (0:28:44) Codey: They and they mentioned this in their video that people have been commenting about how like this limited availability thing (0:28:50) Codey: and how it seems kind of like it’s meant to stir up FOMO because (0:28:55) Codey: they only release some of the DLCs for a limited amount of time and (0:28:59) Codey: So it like makes you have to buy it during that time and the developer of David Iver said that is not the intention (0:29:07) Codey: the intention (0:29:09) Codey: For Sega is to they said the limited availability quote (0:29:14) Codey: That kind of approach is sometimes requested by large the large IP holders to help protect the value (0:29:20) Codey: Of their IP (0:29:22) Codey: so it’s the Sega people basically trying to (0:29:28) Codey: Protect the value of the IP of this character (0:29:32) Al: Is capitalism speak? (0:29:32) Codey: Which to me like is just not (0:29:35) Codey: It’s capitalism speak, but it’s also like I didn’t even know this game existed until it became a David Iver thing (0:29:42) Al: I feel like that’s a “you” thing. (0:29:45) Codey: Okay, but like I just feel like it is (0:29:47) Al: Yakuza is a pretty big game franchise. (0:29:50) Codey: Mmm, but like if you had it available all the time (0:29:57) Codey: There could be some people who play it and then they’re like, I actually like this this Ichiban character (0:30:03) Codey: what’s he from and then they go play yakuza and (0:30:07) Codey: if you (0:30:09) Codey: limit the available the availability of (0:30:13) Codey: That IP just kind of weird. I don’t know. I don’t like it. Anyway (0:30:18) Al: I mean, I just, I think the term “intellectual property” is a stupid term anyway, and we (0:30:19) Codey: There (0:30:20) Codey: Yeah. (0:30:25) Al: don’t need to get into copyright discussions, because we don’t need an anti-capitalism rant (0:30:30) Codey: We’ve already had one per month, but everything ever created ever is original. (0:30:30) Al: this podcast, even though people are probably looking for one. (0:30:35) Al: You can’t have intellectual property, it doesn’t make it, it’s just thoughts and ideas. (0:30:39) Al: Shut up! (0:30:41) Al: Yeah, well, there is that too. (0:30:48) Al: Just hate the term so much, “intellectual property”, it’s just because something doesn’t (0:30:49) Codey: Yeah, no. (0:30:52) Al: exist and therefore, so we got to create another term to mean something. (0:30:58) Al: First of all, just call it copyright, right? (0:31:00) Al: Just be upfront about it. (0:31:02) Al: What you’re saying is, we get to choose, therefore we’re choosing, it’s our copyright, the law (0:31:06) Al: gives us the right to choose, therefore we’re going to, that’s it. (0:31:10) Al: You don’t have to be like “oh, to help protect the value of IP”, IP has a value, right? (0:31:12) Codey: Yeah. Yep. Yep. Yay. Uh, yeah. So they are re-releasing it because there were people (0:31:16) Al: nonsense like. (0:31:18) Al: I think, oops, I did rant. (0:31:27) Codey: who were worried. They missed it the first time. Uh, this, both of them. I’m talking (0:31:29) Al: That’s the Godzilla one. No, the In the Jungle hasn’t been unavailable. (0:31:35) Codey: about Ichiban’s holiday. Oh, okay. (0:31:37) Al: Sorry, yeah, Ichiban’s Holiday, sorry. It has not been unavailable. It was new, (0:31:42) Codey: And they’re just making it go. Okay, cool. But they’re going to make sure that it has (0:31:44) Al: and they’ve given it a longer timeline. It only came out in April. (0:31:50) Codey: regular discounts going forward, um, to make sure that, yeah. The steam, steam summer sale ends. (0:31:54) Al: 50% off just now, until the 10th of July, which is the day after this episode. (0:31:59) Al: So, if you want to go buy it, go do it now. (0:32:02) Codey: Yeah. And the game itself is currently, is 40% off for the steam summer sale as well. (0:32:06) Al: Nice. A good game. Go buy it. (0:32:07) Codey: So hit that up. The last thing that they mentioned in this is the, in the jungle update. (0:32:12) Codey: So this is a update DLC, whatever, um, that allows like you go to land and there’s a lake (0:32:22) Codey: and it’ll, it, it adds the ability to catch freshwater fish. Um, and the, the update here (0:32:29) Codey: is that it’s probably delayed until spring 2026 because they want to make sure that they, uh, (0:32:35) Codey: make it the best it can be. Yeah. Nope. That’s pretty much it. (0:32:36) Al: I think I’m done with Dave the Diver. (0:32:40) Al: I don’t feel the pool to go back and play it. (0:32:43) Codey: What would be the pull? What would get you? (0:32:45) Al: I don’t know if there is something like I enjoyed when I was playing it, (0:32:49) Al: but I just it takes a lot to go back to a game. (0:32:54) Al: And I don’t think I feel that pool. (0:32:57) Codey: - Mm-hmm. (0:32:57) Al: It’s like Isheban’s Holiday. (0:33:00) Al: Yeah. (0:33:02) Al: OK, the in the jungle, it’s just more of the same. (0:33:06) Al: I enjoyed that, but. (0:33:08) Al: You know, I didn’t even I didn’t even play a huge amount of the Dredge DLC. (0:33:12) Al: I played the whole the Godzilla one, and that was good fun. (0:33:15) Al: That was very different. (0:33:17) Al: The Dredge one was different, but not in a way that felt I wanted to do it. (0:33:23) Al: And then, yeah, Isheban’s Holiday. (0:33:25) Al: I don’t really care. (0:33:28) Al: And the in the jungle is like, OK, fine. (0:33:31) Al: It’s just a different place that you’re fishing. (0:33:34) Codey: Yeah and new fish a new fish but it’s fine (0:33:34) Al: I’m not massively (0:33:36) Al: interested. (0:33:37) Al: Yeah. (0:33:38) Al: Yeah, but that’s the thing, okay, yay, morph- I didn’t even finish catching all the fish (0:33:44) Al: that were in the game, right? (0:33:45) Codey: Yeah (0:33:47) Al: You can’t make me have FOMO for when I hadn’t already completed something in the first place. (0:33:51) Codey: I agree. That’s where I’m at with any Zelda. I not love Zelda and also Pokemon IP right now (0:33:58) Codey: They’re like all the new game and I’m like man. I didn’t I don’t even remember playing (0:34:04) Codey: Scarlet and Violet, so it’s whatever (0:34:04) Al: All right, finally, Usagi Shima new update, the Tanabata Star Festival update. It’s more (0:34:08) Codey: Last update, yep (0:34:18) Codey: So yeah (0:34:19) Al: of the same. You got it. You like it. Go get your Tanabata bamboo. (0:34:24) Codey: Yep, so there’s a some new decorations with Tana Bada back bamboo (0:34:29) Codey: Your bunnies have are carrying little heartfelt wishes that they’re (0:34:34) Codey: putting on on the Bamboo as their their wishes for the year or their wishes for (0:34:40) Codey: the the coming time and they’re so cute it’s free update you just do it in the (0:34:47) Codey: App Store Google Play Store if you already have the game so I am NOT (0:34:52) Codey: intrigued enough to do this so that’s that’s the updates (0:34:54) Al: Mm hmm. That’s the updates. We also have a new game, and that is B simulator. Oh, is (0:35:01) Codey: Mm-hmm (0:35:04) Codey: The hive I think be simulator has been out for a while this is like (0:35:08) Al: this an update or a new game? (0:35:10) Codey: Yeah, so I think the hive is (0:35:14) Codey: Something a little different. It’s like a twist on the game, but it’s whatever man (0:35:21) Al: You know, you’re not interested. (0:35:24) Codey: No, I’m sick and tired of honey bee stuff man like (0:35:30) Al: » That’s the issue, fair. (0:35:34) Codey: This is not (0:35:35) Codey: Indicative of anywhere else in the world, but the United States (0:35:39) Codey: Has held up honey bees as like the poster child of pollinator conservation and the honey bee itself is not native to (0:35:49) Codey: North America it was brought over because people wanted honey (0:35:54) Codey: And now it is used because it is act it is an incredibly effective pollinator for certain plants (0:35:59) Codey: And the only reason it’s really effective is because we’ve decimated all of the houses. (0:36:04) Codey: We don’t have a habitat for local pollinators and native pollinators, so they don’t live near our farms anymore because we just do this monoculture and we spray all these pesticides. (0:36:14) Codey: So the natives aren’t there anymore, they can’t do the pollinating anymore, so we have to bring in these honeybees. (0:36:20) Codey: But honeybees are the equivalent of a chicken. (0:36:24) Codey: It’s like if we held up a chicken and said, “Let’s save the endangered birds.” (0:36:34) Codey: That is not… Yes, I agree with what you’re saying, but that is not an endangered… That’s not even a native bird. (0:36:44) Codey: No. So in the United States, it’s really frustrating. I want to see more stuff about native bees, which is one of the reasons I super loved, Apico and Elle, adding in native bees. (0:37:00) Codey: He also I mean like that game is more (0:37:04) Codey: It could have been in the like well first of all it’s a fantasy game (0:37:06) Codey: But it could have been in nor in not in North America (0:37:09) Codey: So the bees are there are social bees that live in hives that are native to (0:37:17) Codey: Where like Europe and Asia and stuff like that, so that’s fine. It’s it’s fine. It’s fine (0:37:23) Codey: I’ll get off my soapbox, but be simulator the hive is (0:37:27) Codey: Quote the epic adventure of a tiny bee in a vast world collect pollen race through jet streams (0:37:34) Codey: And protect your hive from wasps now even bigger with the hive expansion (0:37:40) Codey: Gather resources build and customize your very own beehive (0:37:45) Codey: so this looks like (0:37:47) Codey: You can build your hive in a bunch of different places (0:37:51) Codey: Also gotta say the hive that the pictures were obscene not accurate. They wouldn’t do they wouldn’t leave this much space, but okay (0:38:01) Codey: It’s just (0:38:04) Codey: It’s fine people will enjoy playing it. I I don’t want to poop poo on people’s people’s fun too much (0:38:10) Codey: I’m down for bug games (0:38:12) Al: Could be worse (0:38:13) Codey: Could be worse (0:38:15) Al: As with many things could be worse (0:38:17) Codey: But it’s coming out on the 4th of August and there is not a price currently oh, yep (0:38:22) Al: Ah, well there you go go look at it if you’re interested in it (0:38:30) Al: Cody will not be playing it presumably (0:38:33) Codey: No, I will not though if people are interested in I can’t even say this I can never mind redacted (0:38:40) Codey: I was gonna say if people are interested in learning how honeybee biology happens, but I don’t even know if it’s gonna be accurate (0:38:46) Codey: I’m gonna have to play it. I (0:38:48) Al: Oh, okay. (0:38:50) Codey: Mean I’m not I would have to play it to be able to tell whether or not it’s accurate but (0:38:54) Al: I thought you were saying I have to play it. (0:38:56) Codey: No, I (0:38:58) Codey: cannot (0:38:59) Codey: Put my thumbs up on this so okay (0:39:02) Al: Fair enough. (0:39:03) Codey: So that’s all the news (0:39:06) Al: Woo! (0:39:07) Codey: What is the deluxe? Wait a minute (0:39:10) Al: Oh, the deluxe edition of “Be Simulated the Hive”. (0:39:12) Codey: Lens island. No lens island. We’re jumping right into it (0:39:14) Al: Oh, interesting. (0:39:17) Al: All right, okay. Well, let’s start this then. So, (0:39:21) Al: this is the second harvest of Lens Island. We had an episode three years ago, three years ago. Goodness me. (0:39:28) Codey: It’s been a hot minute. (0:39:30) Al: But three years ago and that was like (0:39:32) Al: two years after the start of the pandemic, that is where we are just now. (0:39:36) Al: That’s how much time is changing. (0:39:38) Al: And like the podcast was three years old at that point. (0:39:38) Codey: Mm hmm. As each day passes, we get closer to 2050 than we are to 2000. (0:39:45) Al: And closer to death. (0:39:49) Al: Sorry. (0:39:51) Codey: so (0:39:52) Al: So anyway, (0:39:55) Al: dumpty dum, we are going to talk about this because I so right. (0:40:01) Al: Okay, grr! (0:40:02) Al: Probably should have listened to the other, the old episode, to check what (0:40:05) Al: was actually covered in that three years ago, but we’ll see how this goes. (0:40:10) Codey: Yeah I can tell you. I did not but I just remember. So all that really existed in the first episode (0:40:11) Al: I hadn’t played the game at that point. Oh yeah, did you really listen to it? (0:40:17) Al: Oh, fair enough. (0:40:23) Codey: that we played and recorded, all that was really there was a base bare bones island. There was (0:40:30) Codey: nothing on the first island that you come to. There was no people. So you just showed up, (0:40:40) Codey: a house. I don’t even think there was a tutorial in the way that there is now. And so you built a (0:40:47) Codey: house. You could go into the mines. The mines and the dungeon were one in the same. So there or at (0:40:56) Codey: least I had not encountered anything that was explicitly different. So now they are very (0:41:02) Codey: different. There are multiple dungeons. And the mines themselves. (0:41:11) Codey: The mines were about as difficult as they are now. If not, I think they might have been a little bit (0:41:18) Codey: more difficult because it was really hard. Both. I mean, because before it was the mines and the (0:41:18) Al: Do you mean the dungeon? (0:41:24) Codey: dungeon. So it was like all in one. But yeah, you just kind of get, you know, there’s a spawning (0:41:31) Codey: point for the baddies. They come out, they overwhelm you super fast. I think maybe there (0:41:38) Codey: there was, I guess there still is a cool down for consuming. (0:41:40) Codey: Things, um, though now consuming things doesn’t just fill your health. (0:41:47) Codey: It’s just kind of like Minecraft where it fills your fullness. (0:41:51) Codey: And when you’re full, full, then your health auto-regenerates. (0:41:53) Al: Depends which one it is. So the cooked meat from the deer, it heals you. (0:41:56) Codey: Yeah. (0:41:59) Codey: Yeah. (0:41:59) Codey: There weren’t deer last time. (0:42:02) Codey: Um, it was pretty basic. (0:42:04) Codey: And then there was one, uh, addition to the Island that you. (0:42:10) Codey: Could I think unlock. (0:42:13) Codey: And then you went to another area and it was like a pirates Bay area. (0:42:16) Al: Mm, OK. (0:42:17) Codey: And there were people there. (0:42:19) Codey: And so you could sell and trade things and play pirate games and stuff like there. (0:42:27) Codey: Um, but nothing was on the main Island that you were on. (0:42:32) Codey: Um, I also don’t think there was really like the story. (0:42:35) Codey: So when you play the game now, it has more of the story. (0:42:38) Codey: It was really just the bare bones. (0:42:41) Codey: There was farming, um, and there was crafting and stuff, but they have, they (0:42:45) Codey: fleshed it out so much more and I’m, it’s really gratifying to see where the game (0:42:50) Codey: has gone, um, and yeah, I think that’s where I’ll pause the, my, my two (0:42:57) Codey: cents about the second harvest. (0:42:58) Al: to start with. OK, cool. Yeah, OK, so I guess to give people a quick overview, just in case (0:43:06) Al: you haven’t listened to the original episode or you’ve forgotten or whatever, it’s a survival (0:43:12) Al: game. You are a character, you come to an island and you have to survive, you have to (0:43:20) Al: build a house, you have to do all these things. And then there’s obviously, as Cody mentioned, (0:43:25) Al: There’s a story to that. (0:43:28) Al: Yeah, is that enough of a quick overview of what the game is in and of itself? (0:43:34) Codey: Yes, yeah, so it’s like a survival game, but there are these creatures that you learn in the beginning intro part are used to be people, but they were corrupted by this. (0:43:50) Codey: What do they call it a light stone or something? It’s like a, but it’s a resource and they got corrupted by it and now they’re these monster things, which changes my morality a little bit. (0:44:04) Codey: I’m like, Oh, no, like, what if later on down the line there’s you find like a cure and then you’ve killed thousands of these things. (0:44:14) Al: If you don’t kill them, they’ll kill you. (0:44:16) Codey: You’re right. They will. They kind of look I really love the art for them as well. There’s they get kind of Demi Gorgon esque like from. (0:44:26) Al: I did notice that one was very much like the demagogue and from Stranger Things. (0:44:28) Codey: Mm-hmm, stranger things, yeah. (0:44:34) Codey: Um, and it is multiplayer. (0:44:35) Codey: So you can play with one to eight players, which is super nice. (0:44:39) Codey: Um, able to play with your friends. (0:44:41) Codey: Um, and there’s a skill tree and there’s a map. (0:44:46) Codey: I don’t know. (0:44:46) Codey: It’s, it, it’s, it has a lot of potential. (0:44:50) Codey: Like it’s a super open world. (0:44:52) Codey: You can really build it how you want it. (0:44:56) Al: Yeah, okay, so let’s before we get into the game proper. I want to do my complaining section because (0:45:02) Codey: - Yeah, I will second some of your complaints. (0:45:04) Al: So let me get my list and let me pause the game and get back to my list (0:45:08) Codey: - Yeah, stop playing the game while you’re… (0:45:09) Al: so controller support in this game is (0:45:12) Al: Absolutely dreadful. It is just so bad (0:45:15) Al: So when I first opened it when the when the when it first entered early access over three years ago (0:45:20) Al: It had no controller support and so basically just didn’t work on the steam deck at all. Okay, fine. Sure (0:45:26) Al: Whatever. It’s early access. I think that you should have controller support from the start, but whatever fine. I’ll come back later (0:45:31) Al: I came back later and control support does exist, but it is very bare bones and very terrible (0:45:39) Al: When I loaded up the game on my steam deck (0:45:42) Al: You can’t start a game with the controller (0:45:45) Al: There’s like certain buttons that you can’t even highlight using the controller and select (0:45:48) Codey: » Yeah. (0:45:51) Al: Um, and then even when you’re in the game, there’s other things like that. (0:45:54) Al: Like you can’t. (0:45:56) Al: Sleep in that you can’t click the sleep button on a bed without (0:46:00) Al: using the touchscreen stuff like that. (0:46:03) Al: Like really basic stuff that you need to do. (0:46:05) Al: Like, I don’t think a single person, uh, who was on the team, uh, tested this (0:46:11) Al: from like, actually tested controller support. (0:46:14) Al: I think they, they built in some controller support and they went, yeah, (0:46:19) Al: that’s good enough. (0:46:19) Al: That’ll stop people complaining. (0:46:21) Al: Spoiler alert, it won’t. (0:46:23) Al: Um, I honestly think it’s (0:46:26) Al: absolutely dreadful. Like, I think that if you only play games on the Steam Deck, (0:46:31) Al: or if you only play games with the controller, do not buy this game. That’s it. I cannot (0:46:38) Al: legitimately say that anybody who does that can play the game. Like, just don’t do it. (0:46:45) Al: I tried so hard, and I maybe got through like two hours on the Steam Deck before I just broke down (0:46:52) Al: and load it up on my computer and it’s (0:46:56) Al: so much better. With Jurassic World: Rebirth around the corner, Greg & Tara continue their Jurassic Marathon with their Jurassic Park III Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, & Spoiler Review!! Join Greg Alba & Tara Erickson as they take flight back to Isla Sorna in Joe Johnston's 2001 sci-fi adventure Jurassic Park III. When divorced couple Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Peaky Blinders) accepts a mysterious aerial survey, they're lured into a rescue mission by Paul Kirby (William H. Macy, Fargo, Shameless) and his wife Amanda (Téa Leoni, Deep Impact, Madagascar), only to crash-land on the dino-infested island. Stranded without backup, they must survive against the cunning Spinosaurus—the film's signature apex predator—and evade deadly packs of Velociraptors. Along the way, they're joined by resourceful hunter Billy Brennan (Alessandro Nivola, Face/Off, American Hustle) and reunited with Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern, Jurassic Park, Big Little Lies), whose quick thinking saves the group from collapsing cliffs and the iconic raptor-in-the-aviary ambush. Don't miss the nail-biting river raft sequence where the Spinosaurus attacks from below, and the lore-expanding finale as Grant and Kirby use a decoy T. rex to outwit their monstrous pursuer. Greg & Tara break down every heart-pounding set-piece—from the aerial crate drop and raptor pen breakout to the jungle-clearing showdown—analyzing how Jurassic Park III balances nonstop thrills with nods to Spielberg's legacy. Why do people keep going back to that island filled with dinosaurs? In the case of Jurassic Park 3 it's to a) save a missing boy and b) witness how much cleverer velociraptors have got. They can talk now! Set traps! And pretend to be statues! Not to be outdone by the newly introduced Spinosaurus which swallows a phone and proceeds to announce itself with a ringtone, like some monstrous version of Peter Pan's crocodile. Can the returning Sam Neill as Alan Grant prevent both this new gang of hapless humans from being eaten and also this movie from being rubbish? Let's find out!Join the Redshirt Cinema Club! This month's episode is a sort of follow-up to that from the start of the year, looking at some of the more problematic areas of dinosaurs and palaeontology when it comes to online discussions. There is an online fandom of dinosaurs that treats them like monsters or superheroes, and can fixate on what is and isn't the biggest / strongest / fastest dinosaur and who could beat up who. Joining us to discuss this is Dr Mike O'Sullivan, a palaeontologist and self-professed member of several fandoms. We talk about how this community works and what it means for scientists talking about research.   Links: Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/terriblelizards   Mike is part of Palaeogames, a company of professional palaeontologists making accurate books and games: https://palaeogames.com/   And here's their latest Kickstarter, a Dungeons & Dragons companion book: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/palaeogames/professor-primulas-portfolio-of-palaeontology
