Marissa and Mary consider the realism of gritty 1980s teen gambling. Is it harder or easier for a kid to get into money troubles in the 2020s?  And another thing: what do these supposedly “ugly” earrings of Jessica’s look like? And where can I buy them? Should Jessica have a low-balance credit card? These and other questions explored, if not answered, in this extended exploration of themes from Sweet Valley High Book 51, AGAINST THE ODDS. VSafe

In this episode we dive into our personal reading histories and talk about our reading lives. We share stories about how we became readers, our favorite childhood books - Sweet Valley High, Babysitters Club, R.L. Stein, etc. Although we have different reading routines, ways we organize books, and views on putting a book down (to DNF or not to DNF, that is the question!) - we can agree that vacation reading is the best reading. We share our favorite recent books, our process for vetting the books for our monthly book club, and the  books we think are overrated. If you ever have trouble finding new books, or picking something to read we list our top ways to find new reads.    Podcast mentioned: Grace & Becca on The SSR podcast discussing Sweet Valley High Book #1   Obsessions: Alison Roman’s Tiny Salty Chocolate Cookies (From her cookbook Nothing Fancy) Corgi Pods silicone air pods case   Instagram: (Authors!) @emmastraub @kathrinemcgee @kristywharvey @andreadunlop @lindseykelk @jasminespics   Bookstagram: @nycbookgirl @ashleyspivy @hithapalepu @booksaremagicbk @jordys.book.club @sarahsbookshelves @grlpwrdreads @marylauraphillpott @inkandfable @molliereads @worldswithinpages @carly @literaryjo @frombwithlove @ashleybrookebookclub   Books: The Idea of You by Robinne Lee Verity by Colleen Hoover You are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen Tell Me Lies by Carola Lovering The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson A Sky Painted Gold by Laura Wood A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid Matchmaking for Beginners by Maddie Dawson Fleishman is in Trouble by Taffy Brodesser-Akner Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens Feels like Falling by Kristy Woodson Harvey All Adults Here by Emma Straub The Twin By Natasha Preston He Started It by Samantha Downing Sweetbitter by Stephanie Danler Stray by Stephanie Danler The Heir Affair by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan The Lions of Fifth Avenue by Fiona Davis Friends and Strangers by J. This book was made into a film. Orson Scott Card: Bestselling author of Ender's Game, Ender's Shadow, and many other science fiction and fantasy books.  Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman: One of Tina Rawhouser's favorite books, Challenger Deep is the story of Caden Bosch, whose descent into schizophrenia splits his world into one of a high school student and the other of a sea captain on his way to Challenger Deep, the ocean's deepest trench.    The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas: Starr Carter lives in two worlds, her poor neighborhood and the fancy prep school she attends. Those worlds collide when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her best friend at the hands of a police officer. The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien: The classic fantasy tale of a small, reluctant traveler who is pressured to join a group of dwarfs on a quest to retrieve their treasure from a dragon.  Little Women by Louisa May Alcott: Recounts the joys and sorrows of the 4 March sisters as they grow up in the latter half of the 19th century.  The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. On today’s episode, we head to Bayport to take on the brothers Hardy, those teen sleuths you thought you knew… We discuss Books One and Two of The Hardy Boys: The Tower Treasure, and The House on the Cliff. This episode offers an interesting counterpoint to our look at the first Sweet Valley High Book from Episode 3. But first, we abandon our usual Bookshelf Revisit in favor of Bookshelf Roulette. Based on random number suggestions from our Twitter followers, we each find a book on our shelf to discuss. What strange volume will we land on? And perhaps more importantly, will Tod can stay on topic? (Hint: barely.) Find out what adventures await us as we confront hobos, starvation, bad book signings, reckless jalopies, cookie-obsessed chums and the true villainy of red-heads. Learn more about your ad choices.
